I don't know why this bakery claims to be famous. I didn't have a good experience in customer service. I ordered a custom cake that costs more than $50 via the phone. Based on my conversation, I was rather suspicious of what kind of cake I will get for over $50. She did not explain well what I am going to get. After reading the reviews in yelp, I became more suspicious so I decided to visit the bakery. I also found a coupon in mailers for this newly open bakery. The coupon is used to introduce the new bakery to the community. Apparently, the bakery does not want to honor the coupon that I found in the mailer. The coupon says $10 off for $50 and over for ANY PURCHASE. It did not say for walk-in only. So it cannot be applied to the cake I ordered. I was told that it is for walk-in only and not for a custom order cake. Well, please say so in the coupon, that is how you do business and be accepted in the new neighborhood. Otherwise, I believe the coupon for what it says. I cancelled my order went to another bakery. It is a good think I didn't pay in advance. This bakery does not know how to do business. I actually felt good for canceling it. It validated my gut instinct about my order. read more

01.02.2019 Stopped by to check out the baked goodies after getting some drinks several doors down. I got two cannolis--one with shaved chocolate and the other with toasted crushed almonds. They fill and top cannolis as you order. They're not sitting and getting soggy waiting to be purchased. Both were amazingly delicious!!! The cannoli shells were a good size, crisp and flaky. The filling was creamy and light. H was expecting something sweet after tasting the cannoli with shaved chocolate but was pleasantly surprised. You taste the smooth and light cream with the crunchy shell and the sweetness of the chocolate in each bite. I can't wait to come back and either have a panini for lunch or a crepe for breakfast/brunch. Plus we have to try their different cookies. read more

First time here and try are next to my optometrist. I had the cannoli and some cookies and it was delicious. They fill the crispy shells when you buy them so they are super fresh. Compared to what I'm use to getting in New York, these were great!! Keep up the good work and I'll be back!! read more

I heard from a co-worker that she tried the Swedish Princess Cake from Poul's & said it was Amazing! I decided to order a cake for my boss's birthday and figured I would order from Poul's. The owner, Ayliz was very courteous and helpful and came up with the color scheme for the Swedish Princess Cake. All of us at work enjoyed the cake very much, it was so moist and extremely delicious!!! I recommend Poul's and supporting our small family businesses!! read more

I found my new lunch spot! I just had their vegetarian panini and it was amazing! I also had their brand muffin (I was trying to be "healthy") and it was delicious as well! Everything looks delicious and little by little I'll be trying the pastries they have to offer. The owner was really nice too, wanted to make sure everything was good. read more

WOW!! Can't recommend Poul's enough. I ordered my husband's birthday cake from here, and it was the stuff of dreams. The cake itself was so light and airy, and the buttercream frosting was delectable. Even the artistry was superb! Ayliz is wonderful to work with in every way. I ordered gender reveal cupcakes and Ayliz made them exactly the way I imagined--they were super delicious and so pretty. She recommended Bavarian cream filling and buttercream frosting and it was so good--everyone enjoyed them at our party! Ayliz is so sweet and great with designing her cupcakes. I cannot stress how happy I am with the beautiful Swedish Princess Birthday I ordered - from the East Coast! My daughter had seen the cake and requested it for her birthday. We'd never heard of the cake, but was so relieved to discover Poul's. They were so friendly and helpful on the phone, made the beautiful cake to order, and delivered it to my daughter (with only 2 days notice!). They also made lovely angel cookies for my granddaughter who is allergic to eggs. I cannot recommend them more highly for their professionalism, artistry, and helpfulness. read more

The bakery/cafe have been long established for many years. The lady (not sure if she was the owner) said they used to be located in old orange and now moved to Tustin. This shop is located in a mall strip plaza next to 7leaves cafe/99cents store/Kean coffee. Easy to pass by. Came in late weekday night and to our surprise they still offer cakes. Over the counter cakes range from $18-$35. These are good for 4-5 people. European style.. We got the shatore chocolate cake (I'm sure I'm butchering the name) it was moist and tasty. Not too sweet but still delicate. The lady was also nice to make it personalize for a birthday. We also got a variety of cannolis. 5 small pieces for $11. Overall wasn't a fan of it. Pretty basic tasting and take note that it's not good day after so make sure to indulge it right when you get it. Not sure if I'll go out of my way to come back here but the lady was nice read more

Very elegant princess cake, and it was every bit as good or better than the princess cake I had when living in Bay Area (see Primrose Bakery in Pleasanton). The marzipan was fantastic -- rich, flavorful, and what you'd expect from an expert baker. She explained how the marzipan is made, and how other bakeries around the area do not make it the authentic way. Highly recommended. read more

THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! She was really rude! I called in advanced to see if she can make my cake by the 19th. She said yes then text her what I wanted on the cake. I texted her "Good morning hello will my cake be ready by 2:30.? Her response was "Yes that's the time you asked for" Very RUDE to say. Then when I arrived to pick up my cake She wrote happy birthday instead of of my name and the 32. I Then when I realized my name wasn't not on the cake when I got home. I thought she had wrote my name on the side of the cake because she just only showed me the top. I called and told her you did not write my name. I thought she had wrote it some where else on the cake. I told her that's not what I wanted. The black frosting got on the cake. I told her I'm not happy with the cake. Then I told her I would like a full refund. She was very rude and did not want to give me my refund. She offered me to come back but I can't because my dinner is at @5. No time to drive all the way across town. She did not seem to help me with this issue. I would NEVER RECOMMEND this place to anyone. This place needs to be shut down! read more

Pouls, bakery did our wedding cake in August and it was AMAZING, not only was it beautiful it was delicious. She even brought the cake and set it up with the edible flowers we had purchased. So when we needed another desert for another milestone celebration we called Poul's and with short noticed created the most amazing Boston cream pie. read more

If I could have negative stars I would have put that instead. The lady who answered the phone had a rude demeanor and an inflated ego because she won some silly little award for her cannolis. Shame that the scarcity of cannolis in this city makes her one of the few options to order from. read more

Let me start by saying that my husband and I have been a customer of Poul's Bakery for over twenty years. The previous owner made our amazing wedding cake. Each year we order a cake to celebrate our anniversary ( same recipe) and each year the new owner becomes more rude. However, this year she has gone too far. I called and placed my order with the owner on 12/30. We place the same order every year. 8" white cake with buttercream frosting and buttercream filling. Each year the owner informs me that I have to select an additional filling. Each year I explain that this is the way my husband LOVES her cakes. She eventually took my order for 1/7 to be picked up at 9:30 am. I arrived and there was no cake, no smell of cake baking, not even an order for any cake. The girl behind the counter was very apologetic and informed me that she would call the owner. She then told me that the owner would come in and make my cake as she only lives two minutes away. The owner walked in, said nothing to me and ten minutes later the same counter girl brings a cake out. I can see frosting dangling from the top edge, there is a finger print in the side and there is no border, this is not what I ordered. I asked her to please correct the cake and I asked to speak with the owner. She attempted to fix the drips and informed me that the owner was on the phone. She then Attempted to charge me full price. I told her that was unacceptable. She walked to the back again, came back and took $3 off. Really !?! It's now 11:15 and my order was for 9:30. I informed her that I would wait until the owner got off the phone as I wanted to speak with her. The owner did eventually come out and just stood there looking at me. She said nothing, she was not at all apologetic. Finally she said that she did remember talking to me along with "MANY other customers," but without an order ticket there will not be a cake made. Shouldn't she fill out the order ticket ? I shared with her how much my husband loves her cakes , which is why I drive from Fullerton to Tustin and also shared with her that Poul's bakery is special to us as the previous owner made our wedding cake. Her reply was "No he didn't, the company sold in 1974!". Ok.... Not sure what she meant by that, the previous owner made our cake in 07. She then turned and walked away leaving me standing there with a gross looking cake. Now I'm home and I see brown , lumpy particles throughout the top and sides of the cake. We will not be returning to Poul's in the future. It's sad that this new owner doesn't care about her customers and even sadder that she is ruining a legacy. Side note - Not one person walked into the bakery the entire time I was there. No phone orders either and it's never a good sign when you don't smell freshly baked goods in a bakery. She still has Christmas cookies in the case. It's January 7th. Sadly, our yearly tradition ends today. You can see a few of the brown, lumpy particles in the photo below. read more

So disappointed. Yelp lists this as being open 24-7. Pouls lists their opening as 630am. I'm here at 630am - and they're not open. Instead they have a sign saying to check their Facebook. So frustrating! read more

HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. Do not come here for cupcakes. Please see picture below ( We had to include our own decorations ) Not only were ALL the cupcake dry and tasteless but they were inedible. They were so awful that anyone at the party who decided to consume one would take a bite and immediately put it down. We were embarrassed for the bakery that they would even allow to sell something so disgusting. To make matters worse, on top of everything the presentation was just bad. How do you sell cupcakes that's topped with pink icing that looks like it was done by a toddler. Shame on the baker and the employee who allowed for this to be sold to anyone. Save yourself the disappointment and go to another bakery. Avoid this place. read more

Attentive staff which is a good thing :) I came in today for a cannoli and thought it was pretty basic. It wasn't bad but it also didn't wow me. I thought the atmosphere was just ok. ..nothing stood out too much. But maybe I ordered the wrong thing. I'm looking forward to trying something else someday. read more

My mom is from the Dutch East Indies. She would always get the princess cake every year with Marzipan. She was in a care home and for the last five years I have ordered a cake from Poul's bakery. She would have been 93 on Thanksgiving day. I ordered the cake as usual and it was delivered to share In honor of her. The owner of Poul's called me, to extend her condolences. This is my mother's favorite cake. I want to thank this business for making such a beautiful day, my mothers birthday so wonderful with the taste of the old country. And thank you for the compassion and phone call. I appreciate all the years that you delivered a wonderful cake to my mom. read more

I had a very time consuming cake to order for my husbands birthday . He loves the princess cake . The cake is so hard to find and is only made special order . I called Poul's and spoke to Ayliz and she was super helpful! She made the cake literally the same day for me . Not only was the cake ready for me at the time I needed it but it was so pretty and delicious! Recently ordered a birthday cake from here and it was phenomenal. Amazing customer service and the cake turned out just how I had customized. Will be ordering every birthday cake etc from this bakery! Also I am a big fan of marble cake (chocolate and vanilla cake ) so the owner Ayliz had gave us the option to do a Tuxedo cake instead one layer vanilla one layer chocolate and when it came time to slice it looked so beautiful I highly recommend tuxedo method if you're a sucker for both flavors! read more

History

Established in 1955.

In 1955 Poul Johansen, an immigrant from Denmark, opened his first bakery in the City of Orange and it quickly became a landmark. Visiting Poul's Bakery became a weekly tradition for many families. Having our famous Swedish Princess Cake as a birthday cake year after year became a common occurrence. "You made my wedding cake 30 years ago!" or "My grandma used to bring me here when I was little" are stories we are still greeted with after all these years. Poul's is a place where clients are greeted by their names. Our baked goods carry so many memories for so many families and we are so grateful to have been part of so many celebrations, generation after generation.

Hi yes we can as long as it is a single tier, due to the fact that tiramisu is very wet and soft dessert made with coffee soaked lady fingers.

Do you still make the peach (and cream?) breads you made at the Orange location for years?

We do not offer bread at this moment. We might bring back couple of our breads back in the future.

I'm always down for a classic churro hot chocolate combo (French is my preference for the richness) but if you're trying to beat the heat, you can't go wrong with condensed milk either. I will say it does air on the sweet side but I view it as a small indulgence every now and again. Every crispy bite makes it worth it!

We tried the Ube Pandesal Toffee and I'm quite amazed how they were able to capture that unique flavor. I grew up with making an "ice cream" sandwich by putting ice cream in a pandesal and tasting this just unleashed a core memory of being young and making an ice cream sandwich that way. We will definitely be back to try the other flavors! When we arrived there was a few people in line and when the line grew a bit, I think it was a manager that stopped what he was doing to jump in and help with customers which I thought was very considerate of him to do. Lastly, the location was charming and tucked away in the corner of the plaza. It had a few tables outside and in the adjacent Pop Pie shop to sit for a few minutes to enjoy the ice cream! The ice cream is still as delicious as ever - I made the mistake of not checking that flavor calendar before we went, but we were still happy campers. And best of all, I got to introduce Strickland's to my kiddo (who ended up eating almost all the ice cream, lol). Not much in terms of seating, but there was a bench where we sat and eat the ice cream prior to leaving. Plenty of parking - location is on the edge of the mall if you have any issues finding it.

First bite, I tried the milk side on its own, and I loved how light it was. Not overly sweet. Then I tried the matcha by itself. It tasted earthy and had that matcha flavor. When I combined the swirl together , the matcha definitely took the spotlight. It kind of overpowered the milk swirl but I didn't mind it because I'm a matcha lover. It still balanced out nicely. Just more on the earthy matcha side. Oh, and let's not forget about the waffle cone. It was perfectly crunchy and tasted so good with my soft served. It's bland and very icy. Reminds me of the cheap, free ayce soft serve you get for free at some bbq jpints. So disappointing. Hopefully, it's just an off day for the machine or something.
