Service is very disappointing. My family went thrre on a Friday night at 6:00pm. The server told us there is only 1/2 a chicken left and there is no soup as well. I asked if there is free range chicken and she said there isn't any. So we ordered other items. 5 minutes later I overheard someone ordered some hainanese chicken rice and they told them they still have 1/2 chicken left. As well as chicken legs. I did ask them if there is any substitute and she said there isn't any. So unfortunate that the server lied! When I looked at her, her face turned beet red. I will not go back anymore. If you are looking for pretentious gourmet food in a classy cafe, you will be sorely disappointed - but if you want to know what it is like to eat home cooked Malaysian-style foods at affordable prices in the back of someone's kitchen - then you are in for a real treat! (^__^) *Prata or Roti () Prata is an unleavened flat bread derived from the Indian/Punjabi/Bengali regions, well known from the Netherlands to South Africa, and from the West Indies to SE Asia, but I find it more similar to the Chinese/ Korean/ Japanese "green onion pancake" (/ /). At any rate it is a delicious side with anything you might order at Prata Man. *Hainanese chicken () - a Chinese classic () with a Malaysian twist also popular in Thailand () , often considered the national dish of Singapore. Prata Man does an awesome version: if you eat in it is served cold along with acar (carrot and daikon pickles), sweet chilli and green onion/ ginger condiments; warm "oiled" rice and hot clear gingery-chicken broth. If you get take away, you miss out on the broth. For our family of four we devour a whole order easily, and often add satays or Rendang curry, prata Rendang and extra acar. When there is just two of us, we only order half but often share with it, especially if it is cold outside. In the summer heat we like to order two whole orders to take home and have with a cold vegetable and noodle salad. We have been eating this dish here for about ten years and have never had it boneless - so I think you might need to request that with your order if you prefer it that way, as many have told me they have had it that way here - or maybe it only makes a difference if you order in English instead of Cantonese? *Beef, Chicken or Pork Satays;traditional SE Asian street food of marinated meat barbecued on skewers () and served with a crushed peanut sauce. Simple and tasty. We usually add 6-12 to our whole order of Hainanese chicken if there are 4-8 of us eating, but they take longer to prepare so we usually get them half-way through our meal, just in time to stop the young people from complaining they are still hungry. *Rendang Beef Curry: may actually resemble Hong Kong-style Beef Curry () more than anything like the Indonesian dish that it is named after, but we enjoy it. It is a mild beef and potatoes curry with lots fo gravy. It is just enough for one person, or two if shared and accompanied with prata &/or rice. *Mee Goreng: another Indonesian inspired dish cooked Malay-stye derived from Chinese chow mein (), with thick noodles stir-fried with tofu and pork (unlike in Malaysia). It is a big dish, just right for two with a bowl of soup, unless you are young and have a hollow leg, then it might be just enough for your lunch. *Nasi Goreng: fried rice () Indonesian style. A great filler to have with soup, curry or the Hainanese chicken especially if you don't like the "oiled" rice or would like to have something different. We usually have it for "brunch" with soup. * Laksa: a coconut-based curry noodle soup () that is uniquely SE Asian. The Prata Man version has vegetables, tofu puffs, and seafood. This is great for lunch and suitable for one, or to share with some other side dishes. Perfect for a cold, wet, blustery, winter day. *Barley tea: Served cold or hot. This is quite nice hot in the winter, and a nice change from the jasmin or green teas we usually have with Asian food when we eat out. The cold version is quite sweet but we enjoy it in the summer as a nice balance with the spicy and salty foods we usually eat. I think they cater to the tastes of the Hong Kong Chinese who make up the majority of their client base and who generally do not eat "in" the restaurant. So they may not necessarily be "authentic" Singaporean cuisine, but it is very popular in Richmond and very inexpensive. As usual they do a good job with their Hainenese Chicken and rice and Satay skewers. However their 'Seafood Mee Goreng' was a fail. Noodle tasted primarily of ketchup - no other layering of flavours. NOT THE CLEANEST, FRIENDLIEST, BIGGEST - but GOOD FOOD HERE. Prata Man this is one of those places you easily whip by in Richmond. It's on virtually the only driveable strip in downtown Richmond - when you are not in stop go gridlock or fearing for your very life. On the outside, it looks HORRIBLE. Small dingy sign, decaying and forgotten deck. Inside, its not much better. Cheap florescent lighting, wooden seating that is sticky and downright gross. Prata man... or as I affectionately call it "no frills" is a delightful restaurant with reasonable prices, delicious food, good portion sizes and a no non sense wait staff. What more could you want? Sure the restaurant decor wouldn't look out of place in a trailer park or the back alleys of HK but does any of that matter when the food is so good? I've been 3 times, each trying one new item and every time I leave satisfied. I'd say you couldn't go that far astray ordering anything on the menu. OK, it is in a strip mall near Highway 99 (to the east) so not that accessible, but get there. No need to dress up as it is very casual. Prices are very good and the food is delicious. As well the service was very friendly and informative. The ambience is non-existent, but this is a place to eat good Singaporean/Malaysian cuisine. Cash only. Hainanese chicken was different, but with the red sauce and/or the onions improved the taste. The Mee Goreng, Satay and Prata Bread with Green Onion were all very good. They are very interested in trying to make a go of this place as the owners have only been there for 4 months. read more

This is not the place to come if you are looking for nice decor or ambiance. However, if you are wanting good hainanese chicken then this is the place to be. Solid food, great prices. I was never a fan of haianese chicken. I always felt it was too dry and I never liked all the bone shards. Just wasn't my cup of tea. When my customer suggested we go have some haianese chicken at Prata-man, I was skeptical needless-to-say. But as the old adage goes, the customer is always right so I reluctantly agreed. Haianese chicken taste like any other hainan chicken, dipping sauce wasn't good either and their chicken rice tasted like rice cooked in chicken stock. I am an out-of-town visitor who was recommended to visit this hole in the wall for some good hainan chicken and roti prata (bread). And it sure didn't disappoint. This was one of the most tender pieces of chicken I've ever had. The meat is juicy and moist, and the chicken oil flavored rice is tasty as well. Pretty decent hainanese chicken rice. The whole chicken we ordered was decent in sized and deboned, super tender and moist. The rice was not flavoured with pandan leave nor was there much chicken flavour (have to fry the rice in a little chicken fat which can be super unhealthy). Service was prompt and friendly. Prata Man seems to be well known for it's Hainanese Chicken that sometimes it gets so crowded inside. The first time I was here, I had curry beef with Prata bread. It was ok so today I had the chance to try out their Hainanese chicken and I was quite disappointed on the taste of the chicken. I wasn't impressed at all. Their rice was blah but their clear soup that came with the single order was good, chicken flavor with ginger. Cost for that single order was $8.50. Sorry but I wasn't impressed at all. Hananese chicken is not as good as City1, but their rice here is much better. This is also a bit cheaper.

I used to be a regular here up to about a year ago. I went back here this evening with my wife and we were hugely disappointed with our experience. I hope the management of Prata-Man read and take note of this. Firstly, why has the size of your portions been drastically reduced?? Actually there is no second point. The chicken is now too cold, the rice is horrible, felt undercooked. The novelty of being in a grimy little diner that served great food at great prices in huge portions is gone. This is the best restaurant for Hainan Chicken. I have travelled to Singapore and Hong Kong in search of this dish, and now I found the best in Vancouver, Canada ! Food and ambience reminds me of the hawker food courts from my travels in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Had a really excellent curry mee and roti to boot - the Malay curry flavor hits the spot and has the right spice notes. This is the real deal folks! We heard rave reviews from so many people about this restaurant so we finally tried it via take out. The restaurant is small and kind of a hole in the wall and majority of customers are take out based. We ordered the whole hainanese chicken ($20), 12 skewers ($12.75) and a Mee Goreng. The skewers are sooooo tasty. 4 pork, 4 chicken, and 4 beef with fresh peanut sauce. I want to buy a jar of peanut sauce from them .... I could probably eat that as a dish itself!! The beef was ok but the pork and chicken were juicy and soft. The hainanese chicken was good, but my hubby liked it more than me. They give 2 sauces. The Mee Goreng was saucy and tasty. Definitely GREAT prices for the food. The menu is small, but that works for us because we tend to order the same thing anyways. This is definitely a must try. read more

Thought of having some roti prata this evening when I remembered we passed by this place before but have never tried it. So we tried it today and guess what, they dont serve roti prata! Accordingly, the Chinese doesn't like the layers! So why call themselves the prata man! The so-called prata that they serve is like the Chinese pancake! We wanted to order the satay but when we looked at the next table with the satay, they look dry so we decided not to try that. The Hainanese Chicken rice - the rice is undercooked and the chicken is cold! As for the tofu goreng, it's nicely fried but the sauce is meh! The last thing we ordered was the mee goreng and it tasted like puke! Sorry no offence but its gonna be my first and last time there. Feel really bad for the Singaporeans though, to have their food represented this way by this restaurant!
