I was so excited to try this Pret, when I first tried it this was the only D.C. location. In my opinion, the best grab and go lunch in the area in value, healthiness, and taste. Pret A Manger carries an ever changing menu that includes ready made sandwiches, salads, soups, pastries, coffee, soft drinks. Every ingredient tastes fresh and the packaging is perfect for a bagged lunch. It's ideal for a work day lunch; I like that you can get just a half sandwich at a time. They often have new sandwich specials on the menu, one that stands out was a chicken curry sandwich with sliced almonds. The condiments like mayo/mustard come on the side. The coffee is high quality and I the dessert bar I tried (it had crust, caramel, nuts, and chocolate) was rich and tasted homemade. The turkey avocado club is another classic sandwich. The specials on soups and sandwiches tend to be more daring choices, incorporating a more unusual ingredient like goat cheese or chutney. The efficient, professional customer service here goes a long way. I'm from CA and was appalled at some of the customer service I received at places like Corner Bakery and Subway (I haven't had problems w/ most California locations of these same chains). Pret A Manger is super helpful and friendly, the breezy air conditioned eatery is like an oasis during the summer. I would recommend for someone who wants a healthier, more diverse menu options than Cosi, Corner Bakery, or your building's coffee shop/cafe. Pret is delicious! Two of my coworkers had enjoyed Pret a Manger (so fun to say!) across the pond in London and they were both thrilled that the very first DC outlet had popped up just a few blocks away. While it's usually very busy in there, they have a good number of cashiers and they ring you up really quick, so your stop in there can be extremely short. The only thing that takes a while is settling on just one or two tempting items. We've only gotten lunch there a couple of times, but now that the weather is getting to be so nice, I plan to insist that Pret become a more regular part of a lunch hour rotation. I'll be pushing this hard, because if we go more often, I'll be able to sample more of their offerings; I've gotten the Balsamic Chicken & Avocado sandwich each time and I know that the only way I'll be able to order something new is if my next trip to Pret is imminent and already scheduled--the Balsamic Chicken & Avo is just so good! One time I did manage to get a "Slim" one and a small Loaded Potato soup, which was hearty and flavorful. I really love the "Slim" idea for this reason; I like combos and I like being able to put one together myself even more. I've also tried the Mini Brownie, which was delightfully rich, so it's compact size was actually welcome. The food at Pret is all so fresh and light, so you really feel good about what you're enjoying. Also, I've heard that since they make all their ready-made foods fresh, anything left over at the end of the day is brought to homeless shelters. It's wonderful to be able to enjoy a delicious healthy meal from a company who does good. I look forward to trying everything, assuming I really will be able to order something new. read more

I know, I know... I am writing a review for a fast food chain, but I can hardly hold back my excitement! I spent quite some time working in London last year and fell in love with Pret done UK-style... they always had delicious creative items on the shelves - crawfish sandwiches, shrimp wraps, Thai-inspired salads, Mediterranean plates. Every time I came back home I would walk into this Pret, look around, sigh and walk away. How much less creative could DC Pret's menu be? Baguettes? Plain bread sandwiches? Caeser salads? No more! Happy to report that a miracle transformation has happened about a few months ago! Now Pret sells lobster rolls (at a steal $8.99!), scottish wild salmon salads, 8 or 9 different types of wraps, with my all time favorite avocado-pine nuts, and many other delicious things. I work close by, so Pret (for me) is a new, convenient grab-n-go type lunch option. The prices are a little high for sandwiches, but if they are really offering fresh and organic ingredients, then maybe the price points are more reasonable than I realize (?). I do think that everything else is too highly priced ($1.50 for a small bag of chips? $1.45 for a one-inch-square brownie?). Research online what you think you want before you head into Pret so that you can essentially walk in, grab what you want, pay, and walk out. Otherwise you will get jostled and frustrated while standing in front of the food cases trying to make up your mind. It can get crowded (but just as quickly empty out; there are a lot of cashiers). This location is a little small for me to consider it a viable dine-in loke, but that doesn't bother me. I'm going to Pret for the grab/go concept anyway, and that concept they totally do well! read more

Today's lunch was my first time here, and it was fine. I got the spicy falafel wrap (which is kept in a heated chamber), a small hummus & veggie cup, and a latte. The newness was an appealing change from an Au Bon Pain, but there wasn't anything particularly remarkable beyond that. The wrap was a bit dry/burnt/crusty, not unlike the same kind of hot-chamber food at ABP. The filling was good and the tomato sauce was spicy. The vegetables with the hummus were a bit wilted, not unlike ABP, and the hummus was more gritty that you'd expect. I still miss the olive oil-rich silky-smooth hummus of Little Cafe/Bistro Med in DC. The latte was fine, again, not unlike ABP. And the prices, of course -- $15 for a relatively small lunch -- were not unlike ABP. It was fun as a novelty, and I'll have to try a few other types of foods, but it wasn't particularly remarkable. Pret in London has a Thanksgiving-esque sandwich that has turkey, tomato, greens, but instead of cranberry mayo, it's mango chutney. It's so good, I just start crying when I think about it. When I moved back to Washington after a few years away I was so glad to see we now have a Prêt. I'd eaten here in London and New York, and always wished for one in D.C. Great, fresh, healthy options for lunch. As they say, "Organic when we can and always preservative-free." The food is made fresh on-site, and there is a definite expiration date -- a far cry from the unhealthy, unholy shit that passes for food at McDonald's and other fast-food joints. This is fast-good food. I especially love the chicken and avocado salad, which comes with walnuts, and I'm not typically one to get a salad for lunch. Also good is the jalapeno chicken wrap, with Swiss cheese, red peppers and red onions, and a jalapeno tomato sauce. A great innovation in packaging, too: paper wrapping that tears well so you can tear off a bit as you eat. Saves the mess! I can only hope they open more stores in Washington. read more

Pret A Manger is my go-to spot for a quick and healthy lunch. It's not cheap, and the portions aren't large, but all of their baguette sandwiches for breakfast and lunch are great. I love their rosemary chips and popcorn, the croissants are some of the best in DC, and their freshly baked cookies are always alluring. Their coffee is better than Starbucks (surprise!) so it's a great spot to surprise DC visitors with who are in need of a quick breakfast and a cup of coffee. They have some great soups, however the portions are quite small for the price. Bottom line: consistent, great and healthy on-the-go food and service. read more

Wow, a chain that lives up to the hype! I was a little skeptical at first when I realized it was all already made, but my 'cobb' salad was awesome and I'm still stuffed from it. Salad had Grilled Chicken, Blue Cheese, Cranberries, Walnuts, Julienne Apple, Cherry Tomato, Baby Leaf, and Romaine - which are the most un-cobb ingredients I've ever seen, but whatev. Delicious is delicious. You can choose your dressing and I went with the Lemon & Shallot Vin, which went perfectly. They have mini versions of their brownies and another bar which are perfect if you have a sweet tooth like me, but don't need to end a meal with a big ass brownie. The brownie bite action was good and hit the spot. The low point of the meal was having to over-hear the annoying conversation of two twenty-something females lamenting their lackluster job hunts and sad love lives. I'm pretty sure this only annoyed me because I have the exact same convos in public with my friends and have now vowed to never subject strangers to hearing this...can't wait to try the sandwiches! read more

I used to eat at Pret all the time in London, and was so happy to find one in the US (outside of NYC, where they are now all over). LOVE the carrot soup. Love the sandwiches. (I can never choose so I usually get two slim prets to equal the size of a single sandwich.) Love the "Love Bite," love the coffee, love the breakfast choices, love the lunch choices. Sure, I guess it might appear to be a little pricy to some people, but I'm happy to pay a little extra for all this good, fresh, organic food. The Greek Falafel Hummus wrap is great. I've also had the skinny chicken bacon sandwich, which was filling and had real chicken. None of that mystery rubber meat. The streets of London are littered with places like Pret and EAT, but in a good way. Lunch in the UK always seems to be a much more casual sort of affair than in the US - literally just grabbing a pre-made sandwich to go, truly fast food. Pret is a good solid fresh food, if you're looking for a quick sandwich. It's not superb, but it's not bad, either. It's right above the 18th Street exit of the Farragut West metro station, so it is super convenient. They try to be as organic as possible (so they claim), which these days appeals to a lot of people. Be warned, the prices are a bit high, but I suppose you're paying for the convenience of a 30-second stop inside the place (unless you're like me and you can't decide on what kind of sandwich/baguette/salad/soup you want) or there's a huge line (which there usually is). I do enjoy their egg salad sandwiches though. Would be a 4 star place if not for the somewhat high prices. read more

I experienced Pret for the first time last week. I have since gone 3 more times. This is food done right. I can list you the sandwiches that I have had and you will likely wonder why I believe they are so good. This place is the poster child for why quality ingredients makes all the difference in the world. They stick to their philosophy and it shows. Almost as great as the food, is the fact that it is fast and cheap. It is fast because the food is already made. I know, your next thought is: "If it is premade, then how is the quality so high?" Well it was likely premade 10 minutes ago. They are constantly restocking the shelves with food they just prepared. Also, you can get out of there with a whole sandwich bag of chips and a drink for under $11. For a place this good with a great location, that is incredible. Can we get one of these in San Diego? I missed my opportunity to go to this place whilst in Europe but was relieved to find out they had many locations in New York. I had no idea that they had one in DC so when I was visiting my friend there, I made it my mission to go for lunch. This is the best ready-made lunch spot I've been to. They've got an amazing variety of specialty sandwiches, salads, juices, drinks and soups stacked in large refrigerator shelves. When I went there I couldn't figure out which sandwich I wanted to get because I wanted to try them all! It's simple: pick your items and pay at the front! I believe you can also order coffee at the cashier. The place is nice, sleek, with some seating for those who want to eat inside. If not, it's pretty convenient to buy & go! read more

My wife and I found this an essential place to hit while in London, so this chain wasn't new to us. As we expected, the sandwiches are very fresh, and the food is tasty. We visited on a Sunday, so I don't know if this is representative, but the food selection was a bit sparse. I wondered if they produced less food because of their "always fresh" policy. Solid fast and fresh food. The famous ham and cheese is really good! All the sandwiches, salads and desserts look fresh, and that is because they are fresh! They make everything daily and don't keep anything overnight, and you can definitely taste the freshness. I also love their organic coffee, and they have free organic soy and organic sugar, for the same price as Starbucks, but better quality. Also,in the morning, you can get a high quality fresh breakfast for under $4. Love it! Also, Pret a Manger's keep their facility so clean that it sparkles. As soon as you get up there is a person there within a few minutes wiping the table. This place is very sanitary and clean, and that makes me want to eat there even more. The staff is also very friendly, they are always smiling and ask you if you need complimentary water, etc. Also you can get half size sandwiches and they list all of the calories right on the panels, as well as on their website, in case you are watching calories, it is right there for your display! I was so happy when Pret opened in this location. I had been to them in New York, London and Paris. Their food is fresh and features combinations that really make it taste wonderful. I never pick through the greens dreading finding that slightly slimy rotten piece that says it's been sitting too long. The yogurt doesn't have additives -- important to me. They have a great ginger ale with a lot of bit to it. Sweetened with fruit juice, I believe. Their soups are very good. The service is quick and they do pretty well in morning rush getting those lines out the door. There is an adjacent Starbucks, but the Pret coffee tastes better. read more

I was really disappointed with Pret a Manger. I've wanted to try it for a while, and I took my intern here for her goodbye lunch. Too bad it wasn't very good. They boast that everything is really fresh, but even if it is, the food simply doesn't taste that good. The sandwiches were ordinary and the soup was very salty. I had a mozzarella sandwich with basil and it tasted dry. I was really looking forward to it and it was disappointing . Sodas were WAY overpriced ($1.50 for a can), and they didn't have any side options besides chips. They should at least sell fresh fruit. The line moved fast, and it's metro accessible, but i think Organic To Go is a much better bet. read more

Stopped by for a quick lunch and coffee. Didn't realize it's a ready-made sandwich place (should've read the review more closely). They have a lot of sandwich choices, though I wish there were more hot ones available. They only had three hot choices. I had a meatball sandwich and a cup of coffee. It was a good sandwich, but not the best by any means. And the coffee was solid - not watery or undrinkable, but nothing fancy. Price-wise, it's higher than I'd like to pay for the sandwich. Pret a Manger is a staple for me when I'm in business in New York City. If you don't know a good deli that is nearby you can't go wrong with it. It is a little pricey but when you're on a business trip who really cares? I normally get the chicken with mozzarella and tomatoes on french bread. This location is right at the top of the escalators at the Farragut West 18th Street Exit. There are some other good options in the area such as Bread Line, but I think since Pret a Manger makes the sandwiches in the back and puts them out there is less chaos here and you can get in and out much faster. A nice addition to the area, but if you're looking for a bargain lunch look elsewhere. read more

I'm new to Southern Atlantic coast and live in Virginia so I explore on my lunch hours. First time I saw Pret A Manger in downtown DC thought it was some kind of high end baby store. When I saw another in my travels knew I was having a blonde moment and checked it out (fyi, some signage would help us newbies AND tourists). Love the fact that they have everything to go with prices, ingredients, full nutritional info and they donate daily unsold to charities. Discovered today when I was watching other lunchers that they make half sandwiches (MAKE MORE OF THESE, PLEASE). Fresher than Subway and cheaper than the lunch trucks (no, I ain't paying $8-10 for lunch daily). I will be a new regular. Get to some more states, please. read more

Even tho the food is pre-packaged, it is indeed fresh & tasty! I would have given them four stars, but I got 1/2 a chicken, chipotle, cilantro sandwich that had no chicken on it! I only realized after I had slogged back to my office. I also ordered one of their fabulous chocolate chip cookies - yumm! You can tell the food is organic, and made with love. I am a fan of the Pret ever since I first encountered one in London. They are great for grab and go food although I usually consume my selections on site. I like their coffee and yogurt parfaits for breakfast and their sandwiches at lunch. Although the sandwiches are ready prepared in a refrigerator case, the sandwich rolls are crunchy and fresh. I decided to try this place because I figured it would be quick after running to the post office. I will say I had low expectations figuring it was going to be yet another overpriced sandwich shop. Plus I thought it was kind of gimmicky. I went and checked out the selections, they had a lot of variety, but I was disappointed that while they had egg salad they did not have tuna salad, which is usually what I want when I pick up a "simple" sandwich. All the sandwich combinations looked good and I decided on the balsamic chicken with avocado. I love kettle brand chips which they carry and I got the Darjeeling tea with natural lemonade. The sandwich and tea were excellent. The sandwich was fresh and more filling then I thought it would be and I didn't finish the chips. The store looked great, but I didn't stay. I want to go back to try breakfast since the open at 7 am and the coffee. My only complaint like most people said was it's a bit pricy. For a chain this is one of my go-tos when I need something quick and decently tasty. Some of the better things on their menu: the hot falafel marinara wrap, banh mi Vietnamese sandwich (no longer offered I think), and the bacon mac n cheese. The sandwiches look fresh and I think they are made daily. The pastries are OK, as is the tomato feta soup. I do not like their chai at all, tastes flavorless. Even though I generally enjoy the food I wouldn't recommend this place based on price and portion size. You can easily spend $13 on food (no drink) and still be hungry. Not the Pret I remember from England (the same company, but their US concept seems a bit different -- US concept = prepackaged but still fresh; UK concept = made to order with many more options). Whatever concept Pret uses, however, I'm still a fan. What I really love is that I can get 2 half sandwiches for almost the same price as a full and therefore get to sample 2x more sandwiches per trip. I think my favorite so far is the cranberry-brie one during the holidays which was really good and fresh with a toothsome baguette without being hard. Also, a fast moving line and big comfy leather chairs for seating. If everything is so hunky dory, why minus the star? Well, no condiments. If you want extra mayo or mustard or whatever, they won't give it to you. Now, this wasn't a problem for me (because Pret and I have the same palate), but some people like mayo with their roast beef. read more

We didn't go here for our lunch sandwiches as the prices are high and the portions small and we really think the "organic" thing is a bit ridiculous (do you really know where the ingredients come from?) and so much about a good sandwich depends on how clean and efficient the actual store is. Although initially skeptical, I became quite a fan of Pret A Manger, all the more so once discovering their huge 'n filling bagettes. My former complaint was that the little sandwiches cut on the diagonal and put into triangle boxes did not keep me full much past ~2 hours after eating. The bagettes, though, go on and on and are crispy with yummy ingredients, despite the pre-made nature of P.A.M. I was particularly surprised by the chicken bagettes, which have the perfect combination of veggies to delightfully soft, flavorful protein. Yum! As for breakfast, croissaints are nice if you're by P.A.M. at breakfast but not worth the extra trip. Staff is always friendly in my experience and there is typically places to grab a table with a view here. read more

The quality of the food here has consistently gone down. I used to love getting a chocolate croissant here because it was flaky and warm. Now when I get it it's not flaky but mushy and isn't always warm. I ordered a iced chai latte today which turned out to be a cup of ice milk with a chai tea bag in it. I don't drink this often but I imagine it shouldn't taste like a cup of milk. I probably won't be going back unless I'm so lazy and happen to be coming out the metro escalators. read more

Fresh and good-tasting sandwiches, including a variety of appealing and uncommon mashups (e.g. egg salad, spinach & parmesan). I'm glad that Pret has made the jump across the ocean, and I'm glad they've opened this outpost in DC. The sandwiches are a treat. Downsides - not particularly cheap. Also, seating at this location is scarce and precious. You're better off getting your meal to go (oops, "takeaway") and descending into the Food Abyss at International Square to eat with the Morlocks there. Lastly, the selection of sides and drinks is fairly limited at Pret, but acceptable for a simple meal and in keeping with the "pay-more / notch up in quality" theme of the place. This particular location isn't convenient to my office downtown but whenever I'm on an errand in this neck of the woods I make a point to come here. read more

I'd love if this joint came to Northern California. I'm willing to pay more for a sandwich that is organic & doesn't feature luncheon meats of questionable origin and freshness. I was glad they had 1/2 sandwiches available for those of us who eat smaller portions. also 1/2 sizes of some of their sweets (YAY) like the brownie and "love bite." This is more of a review of Pret as a chain than just this one location. It's a great place for coffee, breakfast, or lunch. The ingredients are fresh and the milk for coffee is organic, but the products are not more expensive than Starbucks, where organic products are not used. The croissants are delicious and clearly not shipped in or defrosted like the pastries at most coffee shops. They also list their calories, which they don't legally need to do in DC. Many of the sandwhiches include arugula or avocado, and they're just really good. It's also nice that they have the option of buying just half a sandwhich. The service is fast. Cashiers move between registers to ring people up faster than they could if they gave the register half a minute to reset each time they needed to ring someone up. Great place. I have to admit I'm a bit of a Pret fan. I've eaten at a couple locations in London, so when I saw that one was opening in DC, only four blocks from work, I had to hit it. I went expecting a zoo, as the locations in London were always very, very busy. I was pleasantly surprised, as it was noon on a Friday, but the lines moved quickly and I was in and out in about five minutes. There is a wide variety of sandwiches and salads to choose from, and everything is delicious. I'm usually really picky when it comes to sandwiches, but Pret's are out of this world. I recently had their take on a Cobb salad and it was also incredibly delicious-and very filling. You can tell that the items were just recently made, and not just sitting on a shelf since 8 AM. The staff was friendly and helpful! I will be back as many times as my meager pocketbook will allow! read more
