Commuted 2 hours just to get a taste of the fish and chips here! (Through the link, ferry, and walking...) So worth it! Got an order of the fish and chips, plus their lobster roll. Super tastyyyy and great! The fish was incredibly crispy and the lobster was delicious. I'd pass on the mint green peas LOL, just my personal opinion. Very odd much interesting. Service was great, and I was glad to see this place busy! Interior is nice, cozy, and inviting! Thanks a lot!
The BEST fish & chips in Seattle confirmed. I've heard so many things about Proper Fish and had to make the trip out to Bainbridge Island to see for myself. We got the British Fish & Chips, Baby Gem Lettuce Caesar, and Chowder. The fish was WOW. Great batter that stayed crispy. A HUGE fresh cut of cod. Thick cut fries that were perfect in every way. Safe to say my mind was blown. Hands down the best fish & chips. Everything else we ordered was just ok. Stick with the fish & chips.
When you arrive here it can be a bit confusing. They have amazing reviews, so ferry traffic tends to flock here. Add in your visit being on a weekend and expect for it to be packed. When you go inside to order it's a bit cramped, but manageable. You order food and then find a seat. That's where it got challenging for us. There were a lot of people saving seats while one person ordered, so it was hard for us to find one. We did eventually find one and didn't wait too long until they brought the food out. The oysters are everything you'd want in a fried oyster. They were pricey, but not too crazily priced. The fish was bland. I go out of my way to find seafood. I would eat it multiple times a day if I could. I had a couple bites of this and decided even with the high price it wasn't worth finishing to me. Oddly enough my friend who was with me (who typically does not eat seafood because it's too fishy) enjoyed the fish. She herself said she liked it because it was bland and didn't taste like fish at all to her. I'm not sure why it has such high ratings, for me the fish itself was a solid 2/10.
We were headed to the water for a lunch view but saw this place in a whim & stopped in. It was packed inside & out! The fish & chips were tasty. I enjoyed the fresh Alaskan fish. The fries were just ok. It's served with a dollop of puréed peas that my husband tasted & said it had a sage flavor. My husband ordered the lobster roll which was stuffed full of lobster. He subbed a salad for fries that was fresh. I also ordered a peach bourbon smash. It was so good. I was kind of knocking because of the size but the taste factor totally made up for it. The place is very small with limited seating but we were able to sit at the bar & watch these amazing cooks in action. I took pics of the sandwiches & tacos as they were being made. I would definitely order one of these next time! Happy Eating!
During peak times, the wait is over an hour to get your food. You may stand in line for about 20-30 minutes, and once you pay, you get your food in about 40 minutes. Be prepared to wait. The fish and chips were... proper! Batter was fantastic and the fish and . The fries were great. Well season and crispy, but with a nice chew. For the price and large portion, I'd say it's not bad! Recommend going with a friend to grab a table and someone else order so you have a spot to eat. Great place for fish and chips!
My favorite meal in Seattle!! If you're in Bainbridge you have to stop in. Line was fairly short, but food took ~30 mins to come out. The fish & chips were soooo good. Crispy, flakey, salty. Fish sandwich was also good, but I preferred the fish & chips.
We recently dined at Proper Fish on a busy Saturday for an early dinner. As expected, the line was long. When we got to the cashier, she told us it would take about an hour for our food. There are several tables inside and outside that are casually up for grabs. We didn't have to wait long to get a really good corner table in the back near the self-serve water station which nicely offers a carafe filled with ice water with lemon and another one without lemon. After less than an hour, as promised, our food came out fresh and steaming hot. I don't know if I'm just lucky or not super picky, but I thought our food looked amazing and tasted delicious! Our fish was juicy and perfectly cooked. It was the similar long fillet size that I remember having when I visited England. A nice touch is the fish and chips are laid on top of newspaper printed food safe parchment paper. The servers were friendly and helpful. They gave us a generous amount of hand-cut fries and just the right amount of minty mushy peas and tartar sauce. Of course, I doused my fish with a generous amount of malt vinegar the way I like it, and voilà, I was transported back to jolly old England! In my humble opinion, Proper Fish is a must place to dine when you're visiting Bainbridge Island. Then, a great idea is to walk the wonderful calories off and fight off the impending food coma by perusing the various cute shops and small businesses in their charming Downtown. If you want a longer walk and photo op, walk about 25 minutes from Proper Fish to see the large, cool wooden art installation "Pia The Peacekeeper Troll" in Sakai Park.
My friends and I recently checked out Proper Fish during a visit to Bainbridge Island. We weren't super hungry so between the four of us, we only shared a single order of their fish and chips and a cup of clam chowder. After placing our order, our food was quickly prepared. Although I didn't set a timer, I would estimate it only took five minutes for our food to come out. Impressive, considering we were dining at 12:00 p.m. right as the lunch rush was coming through. The battered fish is fried well -- crispy and not oily, but the batter was a bit thick, and the fish was overcooked and didn't flake apart the way a tender piece of fish does when it's delicately prepared. I appreciate that the outside of the fish is generously salted. In addition to the tartar sauce and wedges of lemon that are included, there is also malt vinegar available at the table. While the fish was dry, everything else that was included in the entree was not bad. In fact, I really enjoyed the flavor and texture of mushy peas, and the thick cut fries were very crispy. My other notable criticism is around two key items: the disappointing chowder and the general cleanliness -- of lack thereof, of the restaurant. All four members of my party tried out the chowder and we all agreed that it was incredibly bland. The chowder lacked both salt and flavor, and tasted like hot, boiled cream. Regarding cleanliness, a few of us received cutlery that wasn't clean, and there were actually a few ants crawling on the table inside as well. Some other Yelpers have brought this up in their reviews, but Proper Fish unfortunately does not have the best track record when it comes to health inspections. Do what you will with this information, but this does not instill confidence that you'll make it out of this experience unscarred.
Food was beyond expectation! Fish had perfect batter to fish ratio, crispy and perfectly seasoned. The fries were crispy and hand cut, fried golden, and was served with tartar sauce and minty mushy peas. 10/10 Service was excellent, the bartender was very kind and welcoming as this was our first time. We loved how clean the restaurant was and how the water, utensils and to go bags were self serve. Loved it overall and will be back again.
First, it's extremely disappointing that adults aren't allowed to order the half size of fish and chips. It's a complete waste of food and resources to force people to buy the massive portion. Not everyone eats massive portions of food. That alone is reason for a one-star review. Second, the food was so bland. It was caked in way too much batter and very crispy, but the inside was almost mushy and flavorless. I maybe ate 1/4 of it. Not good. The chips were almost all burnt to a crisp. I had like five of them. Complete waste of money.
Weekends at Proper Fish are bananas and for good reason. This place is hands down the best fish and chips in the state. Hell it might be the best in the country. It is a true nod to the proper British entree. We arrived when the line was relatively short but within 20 min it was wrapped around the corner nearly. Rest assured the line moved fast but it's still shocking to see. The entire restaurant is first come first serve seating so plan ahead or consider a picnic approach. We ordered and headed across the street to a table under a gazebo. From order to pick up the wait was roughly 25 on a Saturday at 11am- ish but it was packed with standing room only. We ordered the fish and chips, prawn & lobster cocktail, and the caesar salad. Everything was marvelous! I can't wait to go back again.
Worst fish and chips of my life. Ordered the British fish and chips $22, 6oz (small) cod chowder $8, a side of toasted bread $2, and additional sauces: chipotle aioli, basil aioli, mary rose, cilantro cream (all +$0.75). Total was $45 and this was shared between 2 people Don't let the fish size fool you. The fish was overly battered and overcooked. The actual fish piece was tiny.. the batter was hard and you could feel the oil sit in your mouth after eating. The chips were too potatoey, not crispy and they give you one piece of lemon for the huge piece of fish. The tartar sauce was okay, it needed more dill and vinegar in my opinion. It just tasted creamy, but it was the best sauce out of everything they had. The cod chowder was the best thing we ate, although it does not come with bacon so it's probably the cheapest thing to make. Clams did not taste fishy, and it was creamy in the best way! I would recommend this but would not line up or go out of my way solely to get this. Pass on the toasted bread. It's lightly buttered but there's nothing special to it. It's also on the thinner side. Chipotle aioli had a strong chipotle flavor, basil aioli tasted like pesto in the best way, mary rose was kind of a pink mayo moment, and the cilantro cream was creamy. Although all sauces were good, there was nothing special about any of them so I would not reorder. There's a self-serve water station inside, the service is good but it felt and smelled too oily inside so sitting outside is your best bet. They also sold out of onion rings on a Friday at 2:30pm, but I'm glad I didn't get them because they definitely would have been overcooked. Would never come back or recommend.
I have been wanting to eat here since I moved to Seattle 2 years ago, and I was extremely underwhelmed and disappointed when I finally got to try it today. We traveled to Bainbridge from Seattle just to eat here. The service was great and the staff were kind. But the food was bad. The fish was extremely battered and overcooked. They were too crunchy and hard. The fries were a mix of fresh/hot and stale/cold. They had the potential to be good if they were all fresh, but they weren't. The best thing we had was the cod chowder, but it also wasn't that special, it was just the only thing we could actually enjoy. The toasted bread was also cold and had no flavor. Also, they were sold out of onion rings at 3pm. We tried each of the sauces they offer, and they were all mid. I couldn't even say which one I liked the most because I didn't like any of them. Split between two people, we did not finish our order of one fish and chips, 6 oz chowder, and toasted bread. Even then, the food and oil sat heavily and made me feel pretty gross after eating this meal. The outdoor seating is the only good place to sit because it's extremely muggy and stuffy inside the shop. There are clean bathrooms and self serve water. This place is definitely overhyped and not worth the visit to Bainbridge for this meal. ESPECIALLY not worth the wait or the price, like $16 for a large piece of batter is wild!? Definitely do not recommend.

We arrived early on a Saturday morning around 11 and I'm glad we did because the line built all the way to the street by the time they served us food. Didn't seem like much at first, just a hole in the wall restaurant but after we read more and more about this place, it was definitely one we needed to try. Ordered the fish and chips and tried to order clam chowder but the host told us they ran out of clam and only had some type of fish chowder (sorry I can't remember the conversation). We obliged and they sat us outdoors. The fish and chips: best fish and chips I've everrrr had by far. Not even sure how to describe it...maybe the crisp outer portion of the fish had an Asian rice ball-like texture? I have no idea but it pretty much disappeared in my mouth. The fish chowder: almost equivalent to the pike place chowder. No regrets! I'd recommend going here if all places on the island if you could only choose one place to eat great seafood. read more

What an amazing meal! Huge portions, delicious food! The British and chips were stellar, served with peas and mint. My my! Yummy!!! Extremely busy on a Saturday afternoon. Quite the line. After ordering, there was a 45 minute wait, even for take out. Folks that had not ordered yet took up empty tables, so the issue was there was no where to sit. You would think that there would be a set rule you needed to have a number, or your order in, so others with meals could enjoy their food. No. Every man for himself. Forget any manners or kindness. The food was worth the wait. However, having to find a random chair or dirt patch nearby to sit and eat, ruined the experience of the meal. read more

I had the Fish & Chips plate . The fish is truly flakey in the inside and the perfect crispness of the batter on the outside. Sp you can imagine how that bite tastes! The fish was a 4 because as other reviews comment, the fish is not highly seasoned in and of itself. However, you are given tartar sauce, sauce, hot sauce, and pea paste to accompany the plate. The fries were a 3. They did get soggy quick and were not my fav. However they paired well with the fish and the sauces. The service was typical of a high in demand location with long wait times. But the establishment feels cozy inside and out. The workers vibes were also pretty lively and made the atmosphere feel welcoming to enjoy some fresh fish. The decore is pretty cool too as they have newspaper sheets with a fish drawn on top and the name of a city in the UK. Giving it a 5 because overall the food tasted fresh and all the seasoning can be added to your taste. Would definitely come back to eat here again. read more
My husband and I tried Proper Fish after looking forward to trying for a few months now. We live in Bremerton and have made the trek to Bainbridge once a few months back only to be surprised by an emergency closure when we tried to go to Proper Fish. Called at 8am this morning to leave a voicemail and ask what time they open as Yelp says 12pm and their website says 3pm. Noted to call me back if they could clarify their hours and left my number, no call back but my husband and I took the day off and figured we would give it a shot (worst case we would go to BA SA if closed because omg they're good). Anyways! We showed up around 12:30pm and they're open, woo! Walked up right away, ordered a lobster roll and my husband got fish and chips. I've been stalking the menu long enough to know exactly what we wanted as we are die hard sea foodies. Grabbed a sanitized table, great waitress, waited about 25 minutes for our order. Food was anything but what we expected, and not in a great way at all. The lobster roll lacked flavor, but did contain a good amount of meat which was nice. The fish and chips were the consistency of mashed potato's though, very underwhelming and both my husband and I were disappointed. Next time, we will go to BA SA for dumplings as I don't think we will be back. Also odd that they have a wine and beer menu, had beer on tap, but said they do not serve alcohol. Not a huge deal as it was the afternoon but still odd. read more
It's good. But definitely more than 2 dollar signs for a sandwich spot. We spent ~$100 for lunch, 2 adults and 3 kids. Fish n chips for the kids, fish tacos and fish sandwich for the parents. We also got soup which warmed us up on that cold day. It was filling and the customer service was very friendly. I would go back if I was craving fish and chips. The location is very walkable, close to the water, small town feel and lots of "cute" little shops. Its about a 5-10 minute walk from the Bainbridge ferry station. I heard this place had the best fish and chips in Seattle so I took a little trip over to Bainbridge to check it out. I came on a Sunday around 2pm and it was packed. I opted for takeout since it felt super cramped inside and they quoted me about 30 min. It ended up taking 45 which is kind of an absurd amount of time to wait for one dish if you ask me. British fish and chips - I've never had British style fish and chips and honestly don't even know what that means aside from the addition of mushy peas and serving it in "newspaper." The dish as a whole very under-seasoned and I'm pretty sure the only seasoning was a light sprinkle of salt after everything was fried. I had to dunk everything into the tartar sauce to add any semblance of flavor. The fish itself was fine but the ends of my "fish" were literally just hollow pieces of hard batter and the batter surrounding the fish was not crispy at all. The fries were more hard than crispy as well. I hate peas so I was not a fan of that and I'm not factoring that in. The price is justifiable given how big the portion is but I probably wouldn't come back. read more

Heard really great things about proper fish from some local Seattle influencers, so we decided to check it out! It's definitely busy, but we did find a seat easily. The fish was great, the fries were not - they weren't cooked all the way and we didn't opt to take them home with us. The tacos were a little dry and needed an additional sauce - we didn't realize the chowder was fish chowder which was our mistake. I'm sure it's good for those who like fish chowder, we were expecting clams. Overall it was mediocre, and I think how busy it was might have impacted the food. It's still a super cute spot! read more

Huge portions and worth the wait!! We ordered 2 fish and chips and 1 fish sandwich. The food took about 40 minutes to come out but they give you that disclaimer before you order, and it was well worth it. It came out hot and was super crispy and delicious. The shop is very cutely decorated and there's workers constantly clearing tables and getting guests what they need. If you have to wait and it's a nice day, you should order to-go and keep exploring Bainbridge :) read more

Another TikTok recommendation that didn't disappoint! I'm not a huge fan of fish & chips but my sisters are so we had to make a stop. I'm so glad we did! The cod was SO fresh and didn't have an old oil taste to it. To wasn't a fan of the peas so I put them to the side. The chips needed more flavor/seasoning but that's fine because I didn't want to fill up on the fries lol. Overall, I'll be thinking about this fish until I have it again & I can't wait! read more

I was in the area yesterday so was looking forward to a really good lunch from Proper Fish. I decided to try their New England Lobster Roll instead of the fish & chips they are known for so I called in my order, picked it up, and went on my way without checking it. That was a mistake. The sandwich I received had a total of about 3 bites of lobster on it. The attached photo shows how little meat there was. On a $30 sandwich ($35 by the time they added on their surcharge plus tax). Their fish & chips is huge and tastes great (although there are others around who are equally delicious), but the lobster roll is a total rip-off. read more
Proper Fish in downtown Winslow on Bainbridge Island is one of those culinary gems that will remain a fond memory. My first visit was solo back on 5/29/19 where I had fish and chips with minty peas, plus the octopus, before catching a ferry back to Seattle. Phenomenal cuisine with a lovely layout and interior. Art by Dozfy was also featured on the walls and menu. My second visit was with my son (8/16/19). One lone photo was taken. We just focused on the heavenly cuisine of another round of fish and chips before catching another ferry back across the sound. Again, consistent quality all around. I had meant to introduce other family members and especially fellow Yelper, Wendy K and her friend George to this spot. Even fellow Yelper George S, a Bainbridge Island resident, contributed an ROTD worthy post. This is what happens, time flies by, fast forward and now no longer an opportunity! Sigh. Earlier this evening Wendy had texted me and mentioned the closure and change of ownership for Proper Fish. She had been a fan since its original food truck concept in Seattle, Nosh. So I'm bummed we didn't get to dine here together, maybe had both Georges along, lol. So this is my belated Yelp post with photos from that initial visit from over 13 months ago. Proper Fish remains the best fish and chips! It evoked strong memories from my life altering trip to London three decades ago. Literally, my last meal before departing Heathrow was fish and chips wrapped in signature newsprint. Like music, culinary memories can bring me back to particular snapshots of time. I posted a two parter tip from the information Wendy provided (7/6/20). Important to read as an fyi if you were a recipient of a Proper Fish gift card. Yes, there's a similar spot in downtown Edmonds doing their spin on fish and chips. And when I'm feeling depleted financially, long time local indie chain, Ivar's, will do in a pinch. But again, Proper Fish rules supreme. I wish the founder all the best as he returns to the UK due to a family matter. Life happens, similar to what happened to founders of Pai and Mashiko. Family is important and time is a precious commodity. I look forward to the next chapter at this island spot during this pandemic time. read more

Absolutely great fish and chips, pretty unlike the others I've had in the area. It's almost more like a tempura, with the fish steaming inside the batter for a more delicate texture. Chips and tartar sauce were excellent as well, along with the minty mushy peas, which I've never had before. Excellent stuff! Docked a star for how expensive it was, and that they're serving drinks in plastic bottles. read more

We finally made it to Bainbridge to have lunch here. We used to look forward to having our weekly fish and chips from Nosh food truck before they retired the truck to open their brick and mortar. We got here close to 1pm and there was still a line. We placed our order and it was still a 30-40 minute wait. The indoor dining area is very small but they also have some tables outside too. Nice to sit outside during the summer months. The fish and chips was as I had remembered, just as delicious. The crab and shrimp cocktail was packed with crab meat but the only downfall was that they only provide you with 2 pieces of lettuce. It could use about 4-5 pieces in total. Can't wait for our next visit back to Bainbridge! read more

Took the ferry across to Bainbridge because this place rates as one of the best fish and chips in the Seattle area. If you are heading here, look for the sandwich board that directs you to the location (it is off the main road). If you take the ferry across, like we did, the place will be packed with the recent arrivals and seating will be hard to find. If you wait about 30-45 minutes after the ferry arrives, then there will be plenty of space available. The piece of cod included with the fish and chips is HUGE. It was very tasty, but is enough for two people to share, especially if you are getting another dish (like chowder). On the day we visited they were serving cod chowder, which was excellent. My brother tried the deep fried oysters and said they were good. We were perhaps expecting more because of the high rankings this place gets. Worth the visit if going to the island, but if making the trip just for this place, I'd say save your money/time and visit many of the places around Pike's Market for better deep fried seafood. read more

We stopped in after the Friday night art walk with some friend that had been here before. It was later in the evening and we were able to get a table outside. We ordered the fish and chips and were told that it is like receiving a fillet of cod-which it was. The latter was light, but with all deep fried food, it was heavier than we were anticipating (probably due to the fact that we shy away from deep friend food) it came with a little smudge of mashed green peas, tartar (which was very good) abs a healthy serving of French fries. The food was good, and like another reviewer said, pricey. Our friends ordered some chowder and said it was good but heavy. Also we grabbed their ice water in the back, but there are also many drinks to choose from. Bathrooms are located on the premises. Staff was very friendly which was nice! read more
Massive portions of very good fish and chips!!! If you are taking a trip to bainbridge island, make sure to put this place on your food list. The fish was fresh and crispy. Fries were thick and good as well. The tartar sauce was delicious and thick, it went really well with the fish and fries. It wasn't too tangy. It also came with mushy peas. It sounds sus but it was great!! It was spiced with mint that went really well with the peas flavor. The only thing I didn't like was the prawn and crab cocktail. The crab flavor was not noticeable and the portion was small for the price. However the size of the fish and chips was large enough to feed 2 people so that made up for the disappointing cocktail. read more
Great batter on the fish, not oily at all. Size proportions were very big and generous, it was great. But as amazing as the food was, it was the staff that blew me away: all the cashiers/servers were the most friendly and courteous people in that little restaurant! Probably the best fish and chips I have had in Washington! Came here on a day trip with a friend visiting and am so glad we tried this spot. It was really busy when we got there so after we ordered we were told it would be about 45 minutes. This worked out only because we had not walked around much yet but be prepared for a wait if there on a sunny weekend. Seating is also a bit small but didn't seem to be too big of an issue. When our food arrived I was shocked by how good it was. The fish was flaky and the batter was perfect. Their tartar sauce was done great and not too thick either. The fries were not my favorite as I prefer a thinner fry but they had a more authentic taste for sure and a great crisp! Would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Bainbridge. read more

I had the British Fish & Chips. Malt vinegar already on the table, so you don't even have to ask! That's how I knew I was in the right place. Perfectly fried; not too greasy. It was so good. Looking forward to going back and checking out more of the menu. read more

this take out did not disappoint. you may think twice because of it being fried and ordering it to go, but the short time between when i was handed my order and when i opened the box and dug in really didn't seem to matter and that's a good sign! my original reaction to the box was that it was oversized and unnecessary but it turned out it's packed well so that it looked just as appealing when i started eating. the fries are very thickly cut which i appreciated and the fish itself was excellent. it may seem like a small portion but it's plenty for one unless you're super hungry. the peas were OUTSTANDING! amazing minty flavor and the portion is just enough to let a new customer know if their follow up order should include an extra side scoop (mine will, for sure!) the staff was quite friendly to both me and my dog--we waited outside after i ordered and they brought my order to me. all in all i'd visit again, despite not coming to bainbridge very often. it's perfect walking distance down winslow way from the ferry and tucked just enough away from the main shops that you're either going to stumble on it or seek it out after hearing about it from others. proper fish is properly five star rated in my opinion. read more
