Commuted 2 hours just to get a taste of the fish and chips here! (Through the link, ferry, and walking...) So worth it! Got an order of the fish and chips, plus their lobster roll. Super tastyyyy and great! The fish was incredibly crispy and the lobster was delicious. I'd pass on the mint green peas LOL, just my personal opinion. Very odd much interesting. Service was great, and I was glad to see this place busy! Interior is nice, cozy, and inviting! Thanks a lot!
The BEST fish & chips in Seattle confirmed. I've heard so many things about Proper Fish and had to make the trip out to Bainbridge Island to see for myself. We got the British Fish & Chips, Baby Gem Lettuce Caesar, and Chowder. The fish was WOW. Great batter that stayed crispy. A HUGE fresh cut of cod. Thick cut fries that were perfect in every way. Safe to say my mind was blown. Hands down the best fish & chips. Everything else we ordered was just ok. Stick with the fish & chips.
When you arrive here it can be a bit confusing. They have amazing reviews, so ferry traffic tends to flock here. Add in your visit being on a weekend and expect for it to be packed. When you go inside to order it's a bit cramped, but manageable. You order food and then find a seat. That's where it got challenging for us. There were a lot of people saving seats while one person ordered, so it was hard for us to find one. We did eventually find one and didn't wait too long until they brought the food out. The oysters are everything you'd want in a fried oyster. They were pricey, but not too crazily priced. The fish was bland. I go out of my way to find seafood. I would eat it multiple times a day if I could. I had a couple bites of this and decided even with the high price it wasn't worth finishing to me. Oddly enough my friend who was with me (who typically does not eat seafood because it's too fishy) enjoyed the fish. She herself said she liked it because it was bland and didn't taste like fish at all to her. I'm not sure why it has such high ratings, for me the fish itself was a solid 2/10.
We were headed to the water for a lunch view but saw this place in a whim & stopped in. It was packed inside & out! The fish & chips were tasty. I enjoyed the fresh Alaskan fish. The fries were just ok. It's served with a dollop of puréed peas that my husband tasted & said it had a sage flavor. My husband ordered the lobster roll which was stuffed full of lobster. He subbed a salad for fries that was fresh. I also ordered a peach bourbon smash. It was so good. I was kind of knocking because of the size but the taste factor totally made up for it. The place is very small with limited seating but we were able to sit at the bar & watch these amazing cooks in action. I took pics of the sandwiches & tacos as they were being made. I would definitely order one of these next time! Happy Eating!
During peak times, the wait is over an hour to get your food. You may stand in line for about 20-30 minutes, and once you pay, you get your food in about 40 minutes. Be prepared to wait. The fish and chips were... proper! Batter was fantastic and the fish and . The fries were great. Well season and crispy, but with a nice chew. For the price and large portion, I'd say it's not bad! Recommend going with a friend to grab a table and someone else order so you have a spot to eat. Great place for fish and chips!
My favorite meal in Seattle!! If you're in Bainbridge you have to stop in. Line was fairly short, but food took ~30 mins to come out. The fish & chips were soooo good. Crispy, flakey, salty. Fish sandwich was also good, but I preferred the fish & chips.
We recently dined at Proper Fish on a busy Saturday for an early dinner. As expected, the line was long. When we got to the cashier, she told us it would take about an hour for our food. There are several tables inside and outside that are casually up for grabs. We didn't have to wait long to get a really good corner table in the back near the self-serve water station which nicely offers a carafe filled with ice water with lemon and another one without lemon. After less than an hour, as promised, our food came out fresh and steaming hot. I don't know if I'm just lucky or not super picky, but I thought our food looked amazing and tasted delicious! Our fish was juicy and perfectly cooked. It was the similar long fillet size that I remember having when I visited England. A nice touch is the fish and chips are laid on top of newspaper printed food safe parchment paper. The servers were friendly and helpful. They gave us a generous amount of hand-cut fries and just the right amount of minty mushy peas and tartar sauce. Of course, I doused my fish with a generous amount of malt vinegar the way I like it, and voilà, I was transported back to jolly old England! In my humble opinion, Proper Fish is a must place to dine when you're visiting Bainbridge Island. Then, a great idea is to walk the wonderful calories off and fight off the impending food coma by perusing the various cute shops and small businesses in their charming Downtown. If you want a longer walk and photo op, walk about 25 minutes from Proper Fish to see the large, cool wooden art installation "Pia The Peacekeeper Troll" in Sakai Park.
My friends and I recently checked out Proper Fish during a visit to Bainbridge Island. We weren't super hungry so between the four of us, we only shared a single order of their fish and chips and a cup of clam chowder. After placing our order, our food was quickly prepared. Although I didn't set a timer, I would estimate it only took five minutes for our food to come out. Impressive, considering we were dining at 12:00 p.m. right as the lunch rush was coming through. The battered fish is fried well -- crispy and not oily, but the batter was a bit thick, and the fish was overcooked and didn't flake apart the way a tender piece of fish does when it's delicately prepared. I appreciate that the outside of the fish is generously salted. In addition to the tartar sauce and wedges of lemon that are included, there is also malt vinegar available at the table. While the fish was dry, everything else that was included in the entree was not bad. In fact, I really enjoyed the flavor and texture of mushy peas, and the thick cut fries were very crispy. My other notable criticism is around two key items: the disappointing chowder and the general cleanliness -- of lack thereof, of the restaurant. All four members of my party tried out the chowder and we all agreed that it was incredibly bland. The chowder lacked both salt and flavor, and tasted like hot, boiled cream. Regarding cleanliness, a few of us received cutlery that wasn't clean, and there were actually a few ants crawling on the table inside as well. Some other Yelpers have brought this up in their reviews, but Proper Fish unfortunately does not have the best track record when it comes to health inspections. Do what you will with this information, but this does not instill confidence that you'll make it out of this experience unscarred.
Food was beyond expectation! Fish had perfect batter to fish ratio, crispy and perfectly seasoned. The fries were crispy and hand cut, fried golden, and was served with tartar sauce and minty mushy peas. 10/10 Service was excellent, the bartender was very kind and welcoming as this was our first time. We loved how clean the restaurant was and how the water, utensils and to go bags were self serve. Loved it overall and will be back again.
First, it's extremely disappointing that adults aren't allowed to order the half size of fish and chips. It's a complete waste of food and resources to force people to buy the massive portion. Not everyone eats massive portions of food. That alone is reason for a one-star review. Second, the food was so bland. It was caked in way too much batter and very crispy, but the inside was almost mushy and flavorless. I maybe ate 1/4 of it. Not good. The chips were almost all burnt to a crisp. I had like five of them. Complete waste of money.
Weekends at Proper Fish are bananas and for good reason. This place is hands down the best fish and chips in the state. Hell it might be the best in the country. It is a true nod to the proper British entree. We arrived when the line was relatively short but within 20 min it was wrapped around the corner nearly. Rest assured the line moved fast but it's still shocking to see. The entire restaurant is first come first serve seating so plan ahead or consider a picnic approach. We ordered and headed across the street to a table under a gazebo. From order to pick up the wait was roughly 25 on a Saturday at 11am- ish but it was packed with standing room only. We ordered the fish and chips, prawn & lobster cocktail, and the caesar salad. Everything was marvelous! I can't wait to go back again.
Worst fish and chips of my life. Ordered the British fish and chips $22, 6oz (small) cod chowder $8, a side of toasted bread $2, and additional sauces: chipotle aioli, basil aioli, mary rose, cilantro cream (all +$0.75). Total was $45 and this was shared between 2 people Don't let the fish size fool you. The fish was overly battered and overcooked. The actual fish piece was tiny.. the batter was hard and you could feel the oil sit in your mouth after eating. The chips were too potatoey, not crispy and they give you one piece of lemon for the huge piece of fish. The tartar sauce was okay, it needed more dill and vinegar in my opinion. It just tasted creamy, but it was the best sauce out of everything they had. The cod chowder was the best thing we ate, although it does not come with bacon so it's probably the cheapest thing to make. Clams did not taste fishy, and it was creamy in the best way! I would recommend this but would not line up or go out of my way solely to get this. Pass on the toasted bread. It's lightly buttered but there's nothing special to it. It's also on the thinner side. Chipotle aioli had a strong chipotle flavor, basil aioli tasted like pesto in the best way, mary rose was kind of a pink mayo moment, and the cilantro cream was creamy. Although all sauces were good, there was nothing special about any of them so I would not reorder. There's a self-serve water station inside, the service is good but it felt and smelled too oily inside so sitting outside is your best bet. They also sold out of onion rings on a Friday at 2:30pm, but I'm glad I didn't get them because they definitely would have been overcooked. Would never come back or recommend.
I have been wanting to eat here since I moved to Seattle 2 years ago, and I was extremely underwhelmed and disappointed when I finally got to try it today. We traveled to Bainbridge from Seattle just to eat here. The service was great and the staff were kind. But the food was bad. The fish was extremely battered and overcooked. They were too crunchy and hard. The fries were a mix of fresh/hot and stale/cold. They had the potential to be good if they were all fresh, but they weren't. The best thing we had was the cod chowder, but it also wasn't that special, it was just the only thing we could actually enjoy. The toasted bread was also cold and had no flavor. Also, they were sold out of onion rings at 3pm. We tried each of the sauces they offer, and they were all mid. I couldn't even say which one I liked the most because I didn't like any of them. Split between two people, we did not finish our order of one fish and chips, 6 oz chowder, and toasted bread. Even then, the food and oil sat heavily and made me feel pretty gross after eating this meal. The outdoor seating is the only good place to sit because it's extremely muggy and stuffy inside the shop. There are clean bathrooms and self serve water. This place is definitely overhyped and not worth the visit to Bainbridge for this meal. ESPECIALLY not worth the wait or the price, like $16 for a large piece of batter is wild!? Definitely do not recommend.

One of the highlights of my latest trip to Bainbridge Island was crossing Proper Fish off my list. I was here for a Tuesday lunch and there was no line and several tables available but it started filling up shortly after. * BRITISH FISH & CHIPS Complete with mushy peas and served in newspaper. The flaky, tender, well-cooked cod surrounded by a crisp, deep-fried batter was huge which made the $20 price tag for one piece of fish more justifiable. I personally felt that the batter could've used more seasoning, but there was salt and malt vinegar on the table so no problem. I'm usually not a fan of thick cut fries but I enjoyed the ones here because of how crispy they were from being twice cooked. I also hate peas and still pick them out of my food (lol) but I had to try these for the full British experience. They were really refreshing with the mint. The tartar sauce was also tasty - filled with tiny pieces of red onion and capers. There are so many cute restaurants on the island but I'd recommend considering trying this place at least once. read more
Proper Fish has the distinction from many of the local media as the best fish n chips in the Seattle area, and so far, with my limited experience in the area, I would have to agree, wholeheartedly! I will also affirm it's some of the best fish n chips I've had, giving stiff competition to all the places I've tried up and down the west coast, but many other factors come into play when comparing, because it's not always just the place, but the company you're with. Walking into this cute little place, checking out the uniquely styled menu, and watching the big fillets of cod being dipped in batter, before being laid into the deep fryer, just confirmed that it was going to be a great fish experience, cute decor throughout, and great and friendly service, readily answering questions and giving advice. From recommendations, along with the fish n chips, I ordered the Cod chowder with a little trepidation, as I'm not a big fishy tasting soup fan. Order was out quickly, even with a steady stream of customers coming in to eat or picking up to go orders. Both the chowder and fish smelled delicious. The cod chowder was so tasty, no fishy ness , just good chowder flavor with lots of small pieces of cod, the cod being so mild that it enhanced the flavor of the chowder without overpowering it, so good it really didn't need anything added to it, good, flavorful, comfort soup. Since the fish came out piping hot, it gave me plenty of time to enjoy the chowder. From the pictures you can see it was one huge piece of very fresh cod fillet, over some fat chips which were also cooked perfectly. The fish was delicious by itself (some of the best I've had) although it didn't need anything added, the tartar sauce was also very flavorful when added to the tender flakey pieces of fish, quite a meal! Then add in the mushy minty peas, a new flavor experience for myself, not something I'd tried or knew about English fish n chips, but it was a tasty addition to a already delicious and wonderful meal. The only downside, and I only say this because I do enjoy a good beer with this kind of meal ( well, any kind of meal. lol) is they were not serving any adult beverages at the time. I know I should've ask why, but I was focused on the fish after a hike in the botanical gardens. This is definitely one place to add to your list to try when on Bainbridge Island, they have many other seafood treats to try on the menu as well. Next time! First time in Bainbridge and first time at Proper Fish! We ordered a few things since we knew the portions would be large. We came in the early afternoon to an already crowded shop. It's a really cute place with lots of British decorations and a London feel. The fish and chips was a pretty large portion as the fish part is probably a little shorter than my forearm. The frying was perfect for both the fish and the fries. Crispy but flavorful. The tartar sauce was tasty and not overwhelming. I think it was great mixed with some ketchup. The Caesar salad was a nice surprise! Crispy lettuce that's pre-tossed for you. Each piece of lettuce had a piece of cheese and a crouton - the perfect bite. The chowder was tasty with lots of good bits in it. The potato chunks were large and perfectly cooked. This felt to me to be the quintessential fish and chips. Be warned though - it's going to be a long wait. Each round of frying is approximately 10 mins. Our wait time was around 35-40 minutes but we didn't mind since we had time and loved watching the kitchen. read more
I went to Proper Fish for two reasons, first I love fish and chips, and second the reviews lately have been mixed and I wanted to get the straight scoop first hand. The one thing we don't know is do they have good days and bad days, but I can tell you I caught them on an amazing day. The fish and chips are as good as any I have ever had, although a bit expensive at $19 and when you pay with a credit card they use square that always asks for a tip. Glad I left a tip as the food was well worth it. First off the chips are thick, fresh, and hand-cut, maybe a rare instance I thought fries were better than Dick's...Second the fish is a very long cut piece and there is only one, which at first seems like a small portion, but in the end it was a lot of fish. The batter is on the thick side, but I loved it and the fish was substantial and flaky white. Also, their tarter sauce is amazing. I will definitely go back, maybe next time try the lobster roll. Bottom line - you got try PF, well worth it. read more

After taking the ferry from Seattle and arriving at Bainbridge Island I was ready for some lunch. This was one of the few places that I wanted to try and the other place was closed so I decided on here. There are a small amount of tables inside and a couple tables outdoor so it's not a big restaurant. The menu is small but simple and they have their offerings on the large board on the wall. I ordered the fish and chips ($17.50) which seemed to be their most popular dish. I was told that it would take about 25 minutes but it wasn't particularly busy. The fish was crispy but was just okay. The fries were nicely seasoned but were not super crispy so I'd probably ask for them more well done. They were also on the thicker side so don't expect thin-cut fries. This is a bit pricier but that's expected on a place like Bainbridge Island that is a tourist attraction for people from Seattle and visitors. I thought it was just okay; the good thing is that the location is great if you're visiting Bainbridge Island and it is close to the ferry but I probably won't be back and would instead try some of the other restaurants on the island. read more
My friends and I were very excited about this place because we saw many many reviews about their award-winning fish and chips! I have to say, I've never seen fish and chips come out like this before, in one long chunk! Definitely a hit across all ages and amazed everyone who got it! The fish was very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, but honestly tasted like any other fish and chips, maybe a little more bland. The tartar sauce was good; pretty mediocre to me though, nothing too special here. We got many chips, all pretty well done and a little too salty for me in contrast to the bland fish. However overall, good food. We waited about 45 minutes for this food to come out; it was a self-seating restaurant and the orders were pretty backed-up. We did get a warning about how long it would take (we were told around 35-40 minute wait). I think this is a great place to take family and friends to! Worth the trip here to try their famous fish and chips. read more
Finally tried Proper Fish as part of a destination lunch. I do enjoy driving around the Peninsula and dreaming about the rural life. Proper Fish gets everything right. Service is extremely pleasant, the food was fresh and hot and I have the mouth roof scars to prove it. Clean space with outdoor seating. If you're craving F&C, there's no other option on Bainbridge! read more

Most fish and chips in Seattle have been breaded rather than battered. I prefer a thinner fry, but they were good. read more

I cannot recommend this place any more as a must on your trip to Bainbridge Island. The location, the food, the service, and general atmosphere are all on point. The location is just across from Winslow Green so you may even hear some great music while you enjoy your meal on the patio. Of course the fish and chips are not to be overlooked but the clam chowder is just as amazing. The location is cute, well-kept, and clean as the staff is quick to get the tables ready for the next party as one leaves. Everyone was really kind and helpful too. Dreaming of the day I can go back to Bainbridge and enjoy Proper Fish again! read more
If you can, I recommend getting here as soon as they open. I went at opening (11 AM) on a Saturday in the summer, and within 5 minutes, a long line had formed. I'm sure the line itself moved quickly since I felt everyone was quick to order before me. They do warn you there is a bit of wait on the food coming out, but I felt it was reasonable for the quality. It wasn't a huge wait in my opinion though definitely longer than a "typical" fish and chips shack (which has minimal wait). I got the fish and chips, and I was so impressed! The batter (british style) was perfect and allowed for the perfectly cooked fish to shine through. The chips (fries) themselves were thick and very satisfying. I was impressed with the tar tar sauce which seemed house-made, and it further lifted the already great food. This has got to be the best fish and chips I have had, especially in Washington. (Note: I have not gone to the UK). I thought the restaurant itself was spacious and reflected the food well. Classic and "beach-like" but a bit elevated and "higher quality". I'm curious about the lobster roll and other food items, but I definitely will be back when I'm next in town. read more

In case you didn't know, Proper Fish evolved from the food truck "Nosh", which is the only source for true British style fish and chip in the entire Puget Sound area, possibly farther. I had loved Nosh and was dismayed when they disappeared from the food truck circuit. Imagine my pleasant surprise and giddiness when I learned of Proper Fish and its owner being one of the original owners of Nosh. For our visit on Saturday, the ferry unfortunately both ran late and had only 1 ferry, delaying us by over an hour. We did a mad dash over to Proper Fish arriving about 6:15pm. They said the food is a 45 minutes wait. A bit surprised but ah well. They were very nice about it. Towards the end of the wait time, when we told them we need to catch the ferry back to make sure we get our car out before the garage closes at 9pm, they switched our packaging to takeout containers. That was helpful. Thanks! (While we waited the 45 minutes, I went to buy ice cream from Mora to fill the time. See separate review.) The Food: British Fish & Chips, $17.50 - 5 Stars Described by Seattle Times as "Seattle's very best fish and chips: crispy, secret-local-beer batter forming a just-greasy-enough cloud around a long, lovely, thick, moist, sustainable sourced Pacific cod fillet", Proper Fish's British Fish and Chips are truly worth a ferry ride. Huzzah! Seriously, it's crispy on the outside, juicy and tender fish on the inside. So delicious! Lobster Roll, $30 - 5 Stars Menu: Proper Legit Lobster claw and knuckle, held together with a dab of house mayonnaise, old bay spice, on a square sided butter toasted Essential Brioche Bun, finished with chives- served with fries The Lobster Roll, true new England style, from Proper Fish easily matches the quality of the lobster roll from Edmond's "THE MAR·KET", typically considered the best in Seattle. I believe this version has a slight leg up because the fries are better here. Bravo! Look at my photo of the pieces of lobster chunks sticking out. Fried Oysters, $16 - 5 Stars Menu: Lightly panko coated oysters, fried until "JUST COOKED" served with lovely chips & basil aioli I have never seen Fried Oysters this BIG, and they are truly perfectly panko-coated and 'just cooked'. SO GOOD! By golly, the seasoning is very flavorful too. Highly recommend. Between the 3 orders of food, there are a whole lot of fries for the two of us. We focused on wolving down the seafood and brought the fries home. Ha! read more

came to proper fish during my day trip to bainbridge. it was quite crowded and we had to wait a bit for our food, but i was pleasantly surprised by the fish and chips. such large portions that we shared between three people, and the batter had good flavor and was very crispy. however, im not the biggest mushy pea fan and could go without them. i think the clam chowder was okay, nothing super special; i think it could've been more flavorful and saltier. read more
Proper Fish was the creation of London chef, Harvey Wolff, founder of the famous Nosh Food Truck in Seattle. On its menu on the wall, they claimed the credit of "the best fish and chips in Seattle by the Seattle Times and Zagat." I think it was one of the best fish (not the chips) that I've had outside of the UK. And there is no exaggeration that just the fish alone is worth the ferry ride to the island. Chef Wolff, in an interview before the opening of the restaurant (May 2019) said the exact same recipe for the fish and chips in his food truck will be used: "Alaskan line-caught cod from the Bering Sea, dipped in local beer batter, served on a newspaper with house-made tartar sauce and a side of mushy peas." This is a luxury one can enjoy in the Seattle area and the fish tasted fresh and delicious, and most importantly (for me), without even a hint of fishiness. The batter was light and crispy, and melted in my mouth when I sank my teeth into the fish fillet. To make it truly authentically British, it was served with malt vinegar. The chips, on the other hand, were not as impressive. The outside of the fries was somewhat hard and the fries themselves were a bit dry. It almost tasted like they were re-fried. The lobster roll was served on a toasted, buttery, and soft brioche bun. It was packed with lots of lobster meat that justified its price ($27). However, the roll didn't have any sauce or mayo in it, so it tasted a bit bland and dry. Not something that I will order again. Three and a half stars but rounding up to 4 stars because of the outstanding fish. read more

If it was fish instead of fish and chips, it would be a 5/5. The beer battered English style fish lived up to the hype as the "Best in Seattle". But wait, aren't we on Bainbridge Island, Kitsap County and not in Seattle, King County. Ha ha Nobody learns geography anymore. LOL The batter and fish were both excellent. The fish and chip joints in Seattle can't compare to the batter and frying technique of Proper Fish. Unfortunately it was hit or miss after the fish. Fries: are cut thick in a way that there is a great variation in size. Some were cooked properly others not. 3/3 Ceasar Salad: soggy overdressed lettuce. 3/3 Service: we waited for about an hour for our food. I know, it's the pandemic and it's hard to find help, but an hour? 2/5 Worth coming here for the fish and chips, absolutely! Just be prepared for a wait. read more

You order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. Long wait times about 30 minutes for food and they were not bustling with orders. Few tables outdoors about 4. Inside about 8 tables maximum. So it is a smaller restaurant. The oysters were flavorless and nothing special. Fish and chips are good but as another reviewer mentioned very oily. While visiting Bainbridge Island and being out all day doing some outdoorsy stuff, we came by Proper Fish to get a meal in before we headed back on the ferry. It's near the end of the city center area, just map it and it's easy to find. Came by in the afternoon and it was a little busy but it gave us time to check out the menu board and get our game plan together. Menu is pretty straightforward so we tried some of their popular items: "British Fish & Chips" are one big cod filet, nicely breaded and fried up, crispy, not too oily. Pretty proper to me! Comes with a small dollop of mushy minty peas, chips are thick cut, tasty tartar sauce and a lemon slice. Just ask for other sauces if you need them as there are no sauces on the table to share like malt vinegar and ketchup etc. "Lobster Roll" was tasty as well, big chunks of claw/knuckle meat, not too much mayo was good, some old bay spice(wish more), brioche bun was delicious, comes with thick cut chips...aka fries. I don't care, watch me take a photo of the food before I eat it! Anyways, both were quite good and we totally totally killed it! Order at the counter, limited seating, a lot of takeout orders, may be a bit of a wait time to get your food. This place is so cool and so good! Their menu is simple and that are known for their British fish n chips. The fish is so long, we shared one! It was enough for dinner before we had to take the ferry back to Seattle. When you go there, u order at the counter and then find a table on your own. U get your own utensils and water. Quite a lot of people eating there. Luckily we got a table! Not a big place. Outdoor and indoor dining areas. I felt the batter was a bit oily but it was great fish n chips! We stopped by here on a Sunday for lunch. It was super busy, but I think we only waited 20-30 min for our food. We both got the fish & chips. The fish was delicious, perfectly cooked. The fries weren't my favorite kind of fries, but very traditional for fish & chips. The only downside was finding a table. It was first come, first serve, so people were just grabbing tables right as folks were leaving. Got cut off by a couple groups that hadn't even paid yet. If we go back, I'd probably just order to go & picnic in a park. read more
A quick stop for some good fish and chips! They're menu and short, sweet, and to the point, written on the wall when you come in. You order at the front desk and then find your seat and they bring the order out to you. The fish and chips is a HUGE portion. The caesar salad & the fried oysters were good as well. I was hoping to try the lobster roll but they didn't have a warm option, which was a disappointment. Overall, the staff was super friendly and helpful explaining the menu. Proper Fish is probably my go to restaurant on Bainbridge Island, but not for their fish and chips. Tucked away into a little corner off the main street, this place has the best fried oysters!! They're so full of juicy meat, which I was very pleasantly surprised about because I was expecting these to be mostly batter. Photo attached for reference, but I love how stuffed they are. The fries are also a good thickness and evenly salted. Honestly, this place is known for their fish and chips but I feel like the fried oysters are definitely the underdog here. The fish and chips come with one long giant fried fish piece, and by the time you get to the end of it you're just simply tired of eating fish. Also, not a big fan of the mushy peas that come with the fish and chips either, but that might just be my personal taste. read more

Stopped by the Proper Fish on a Sunday and waited 45 mins for food. Ordered the British Fish & Chips along with a bowl of chowder. I'd recommend sharing the British Fish and Chips because it's BIG and definitely enough to share, even for for two hungry adults. It was served in a donut box (so think how big a box is for a dozen donuts). Taste of cod was good and cooked to perfection. Batter was nothing to complain about but also nothing to brag about. It came with hand-cut steak fries, tartar sauce, malt vinegar, ketchup and some minty pea mush. Chowder was just okay. I didn't see any clams or any seafood in mine, not sure if it was a potato chowder or what, but for the price I expect more. Interior was clean but very crowded and cramped. Workers were busy and kept their cool under pressure. All in all, it was ok. read more

Great fish n chips - served with a lemon wedge, tarttar sauce and malt vinegar makes it taste like perfection. A sode of fries and a small spoonful of delicious mushy peas make the servings HUGE. You can order a childrens entree- and if you dint have a huge appitite and capacity I would recommend that for sure. read more
I had been wanting to try Proper for quite sometime. Glad I made it yesterday. If the prices weren't so high, I'd eat get fish here more often. It is the real deal for British fish and chips! Loved the ease of ordering and the curbside pickup, even though the wait was half an hour. I think that speaks to the popularity of the restaurant. Got fish, chips, mushy peas, fries, etc. The fish cuts are huge and very tasty, but even so I think an add on piece of fish for $11 is exorbitant. I am not a fan of thick cut fries. These are extremely thick but surprisingly tasty! The bit of salt finish was spot on and the catchup was tasty. The tarter sauce is the best anywhere, and that they add malt vinegar underscore that they know fish! read more

Get there early or around opening. This is a busy restaurant and seating is very limited. This little hole in the wall restaurant is perfect on a rainy or sunny Washington day. You order at the front and the wait staff will bring your order to your table. Keep in mind when ordering to add an additional beer. So delicious. First impression; cute place with ample seating indoors and outdoors. Tartar sauce is to die for! Huge helping of fish and perfectly fried potatoes with a good amount of seasoning. $40 for two people Leo it's a bit pricey, but it is "The Island" after all. read more
