I sent an email with a picture to Michael who quickly responded with the style and history of our table and chairs, in addition to a reasonable quote for the job. I emailed Proper Wood 1/21/22 asking if they were taking on new projects. I had a number of pieces that needed refinishing but I let them know I wasn't in a big hurry. Michael Horrillo emailed me back that day, saying "Go ahead and fill up my inbox! It is hard to pay employees and rent if we do not take projects in and get paid for such!". I sent him photos of three projects--a desk, a credenza and a hope chest--and asked if he could give me ballpark estimates. On 1/25 he apologized for not getting back to me, and said he'd get me estimates "in a few days". I acknowledged his email that day, and asked if he knew of a local brass re-plater. By 2/2 he hadn't responded so I emailed him again, groveled and still didn't get a response. I can't believe the job was too small--I later spent $5075 on it at another refinisher, A-1 in San Jose, and an additional $9350 on a second batch of furniture that I'd also mentioned to Michael. I'll add half a star to the one star baseline for being business-like for four days, and another half star for the folksy website. read more

They had a great price with flexible options, the work was done on the time that was proposed with no delays but the team's professionalism was impressive! Michael and his awesome crew have just completed a job refinishing my maple kitchen cabinets, which now look clean and brand new. Michael not only refinished the cabinet door and drawer fronts, but he also refinished the inside of the cabinets and drawers (which was unexpected and delightful). He made sure that the cabinets floors under my sinks, which were grunky from many years of use and detergent spillage, now look new as well. He replaced the toe kicks and the badly worn maple siding on the peninsula. He replaced the door hinges. He uninstalled and installed door slides. He put in new, much nicer handles and cup pulls (though I have to take credit for choosing them....). He made everything look great. I hired Michael because the finish on my cabinets was not wearing well. In addition, the previous owners of my house had made some bad remodeling decisions which needed to be rectified. During our initial conversation, it became obvious that Michael knows a LOT about wood, and how to take care of it. By the looks of my cabinets, his experience was put to good use. The art of refinishing is not one that many businesses practice these days. I am grateful that Michael is available to help people make decisions about preserving and conserving wooden things--furniture, cabinets, doors, etc--that need attention and love and care. After 20+ years of exposure to the morning sun, our mahogany entry doors needed refinishing. A number of companies advertise door refinishing but after researching their websites and Yelp reviews, only Proper Wood Finishing stood out as having the most experience and most positive reviews with wood entrance doors. In speaking with Michael, his company is in high demand and has been working on large jobs. I was pleased they were able to fit my two doors into their busy schedule when it was still warm outside and before the rainy season began. I contacted Michael in mid-September, and he and his team were onsite 5 weeks later. His team isolated and prepped the work area and cleaned up daily. They worked on the doors for 4 days and then allowed the urethane finish to dry over the weekend. I bought and installed new double door handlesets, and Michael returned to reinstall the remaining hardware. Mike, the owner, saved me from disaster when I was desperately looking for someone to finish some cabinetry job left unfinished. I found him on local yellow page and texted him with pictures of the unfinished cabinets. He immediately texted me back saying he knows someone who can help, and he introduced me to Tim from Full Measure Cabinetry. Although Tim is very busy with his existing workload, he worked on weekend and completed my job within a week. I contacted numerous contractors, cabinetry shops before Mike and the answers were all negative. I guess the work I had was not big enough to draw the attention. Mike is the only one who is willing to help and saved my project from stalling. When talking to him, I was impressed that he is such a kind person and so keen to get work done properly. He took a severely damaged curio cabinent that had been smashed and declared a total loss and made it look EXACTLY like it had before the movers got their hands on it. This piece has been in our family for several generations, and he was able to look at the "before" pictures and restore it back to its original condition. Michael Horrillo just repaired a family heirloom that was damaged when it was shipped across the country, an enormous mirror in an ornately carved frame that weighed hundreds of pounds. It was made in the 1880s and had once belonged to FDR. In its move from the East Coast, the mirror had become separated from the frame and the frame had cracked in several places. I interviewed a number of antique furniture restorers, but only Michael Horrillo seemed to recognize what an appropriate repair would involve. He managed to take the mirror completely out of the frame, take the heavy frame to his shop and repair all of the damage so beautifully that one would never imagine what a mess it had been. He knew the history not only of the use of the wood of which it was made in furniture-making but also of the specific cuts that were used, and the origins of the original glue and hardware. I was tremendously impressed by his knowledge and his skill. He did the work promptly and efficiently as well as with great care. He was also a pleasure to get to know. On the basis of the difficult work he did for us, I am convinced that he is a gifted craftsman who can handle any challenge.I could not imagine damaged antique furniture in better hands. read more
