This is a review for the restaurant's new "After Hours" concept. Just had a truly exceptional experience, an absolutely delicious dinner. We had the potato appetizer, guacamole, taco ranchero with an assortment of fresh made salsas, and the enchiladas suizas. Each dish was bursting with complex flavor. The margarita was also fantastic. There is a lot of excellent Mexican food in LA, and this place really stands out. A really lovely ambience with friendly service. Listen...I hate to give this review, but I hate spending my money, and the food isn't consistent, and tastes the same each time. This place can be a hit or miss, and I hate the days they miss because I'm normally starving. The shredded chicken hard shell tacos were not tasty. The chicken had no seasoning at all. But the burrito didn't quite give me that fresh, classic "wet burrito" taste I was hoping for. My husband and I have enjoyed three delightful meals at "After Hours", the new bar and dinner restaurant at Puerto Nuevo Coffee. Puerto Nuevo is a Mexican/American restaurant that's been on Slauson for decades, serving delicious breakfast and lunches. Barbara, the daughter of the owner, has gone to culinary school and now serves very tasty upscale Mexican food Thursday through Sunday nights from 5 until 9 PM. We've ordered and enjoyed the ensalada de pepino, cheviche tatemado, guacamole and enchiladas Suizas. They also serve fish and vegetarian dishes. Was told by a friend to check out Puerto Nuevo Coffee as they have good smoothies and to go items. After finding them, which is a little difficult, as they are tucked in a strip mall and the best way to park and walk in is through the back. I was warmly greeted and asked for a menu as this was my first time there. I flipped through the menu and decided to order their detox smoothie in a large that came with strawberry, pineapple, kale, spinach and apple juice. The smoothie was thick, but oh so refreshing with a little hint of sweetness from the mix of fruits. I placed a takeout order of my usual meal, which always comes with rice and beans in separate containers and a generous portion. When I checked the bag before leaving, I noticed that the rice and beans were combined in one small container and looked like barely half of what I normally receive. I politely asked the woman at the counter about it, and she told me "that's how it normally comes." Her tone made it clear she didn't care to even check and walked off ( not even offering if I wanted to pay for more rice ) When I got home and opened it up, it was obvious the portion was ridiculously small -- mashed into the container . I called the restaurant to speak with a manager hoping maybe they could make it right , but it was the same woman I spoke with earlier ... and apparently also the owner's daughter, Barbara. Instead of listening or trying to make it right, she argued with me for over seven minutes -- raising her voice, talking over me, and repeating that she's "the owner's daughter" as if that justified her attitude. You'd think being the owner's daughter would mean showing more care for the business, but instead it felt like she was using it as a shield to be rude and justify her answers She said they "have plenty of rice and beans in the kitchen" -- so why not just fix the issue instead of yelling at a loyal customer? Really disappointing, especially from someone representing her family's restaurant. It's also odd she felt the need to tell me her father owns the business ... she repeated it almost as if that made her right but , I was shocked that she could have such close ties as her dad owning the spot shouldn't she be the best employee there ... If you're reading this, please train Barbara on basic customer service -- If anyone should be setting an example and making things right, it's the owner's daughter -- Barbara took away one of our favorite places to eat ! read more

I LOVE the complimentary nachos, which can be ordered in a larger size. Today, I got a green juice (the #3) and a taco dorado and enchilada verde combo. Juice was refreshing and perfectly green and sweet. My food was exceptionally flavorful! My brother got a grilled chicken wet burrito with red and green sauce. The chicken was flavorful!! This is a small busy Mexican American restaurant (not cafe! no guest wifi) near a K line train station. After I chose a spot and sat down, the waitress "Mei" greeted me soon and nicely explained how things worked to me. I ended up getting a Chorizo (Mexican sausage) skillet and a glass of iced caramel latte. The skillet came with chips and tortillas. All of them were good! Mei also came by my table several times to make sure things were ok. It was super busy and packed on the Sunday late morning/noon I went. People were waiting at the entrance to be seated. Since it was so busy and people were waiting, a waiter kindly asked me to leave after I had paid. I still had some coffee when he told me that. So if you don't want to have the same disturbing experience as mine, you probably don't want to come here during a busy weekend. Today, I had the fried chicken and eggs breakfast, with a side of grits. The portions were decent, but the chicken was 100% bland. I did not taste a single bit of seasoning, nor did I detect any salt or pepper. I struggled to finish the meal because of the tasteless fried chicken. My breakfast cost me $30.00.
