Born and raised in Van Nuys and since I'm half Peruvian I've always gone to Machupicho to get my ceviche fix. Until one Sunday afternoon after church I drove by Puro Sabor with my parents and decided to try it. I loved how it felt so homie and clean! I ordered my usual, lomo saltado and ceviche mixto! Came at 8pm on a Monday night. Pretty empty but our lomo Saltado was delicious. Very tender meat, good amount of sauce and a perfect portion of rice. One of the best tasting lomos in the area. Easily prefer this place over nazca and chios. read more

I can't even begin to describe how delicious their lomo saltado is. Way better than these overhyped places like Pica and Mario's. I used to go regularly when I worked in Sherman Oaks. It's in a sketchy part of Van Nuys and very easy to miss. There is parking in the back alley and an entrance through the back as well. For approximately $13 you get a generous portion of lomo saltado complete with rice. The green garlic sauce it comes with is delicious. The fries are perfect, not too dry, not too soggy. Yum. The waitress (not the owner) is very nice. They also have Inca cola there. read more

I'm enjoying this as I'm reading all the darn reviews. The GF and I were going to head to Mario's today but decided to save the gas money. Since this wonderful establishment you'll speak of is 2 minutes away. I will be par taking in this event. I'm a FAN of the Spicy Green Sauce! I care only for that as I drench everything and everything in it. I use it on any meal that comes in contact with me. I've used it on Donuts, Cold Cereal, Oatmeal, in my coffee, ice cream, yogurt, fried chicken, substitute for saving cream and lotion. I will be attempting to freeze these into ice cold delightfulness on a stick. Ohhh those hot nights will be full-filled. I will be back to rate the SAUCE that was created for everything. read more

For being in the San Fernando Valley, this is my favorite Peruvian restaurant. I used to like a few others, but this place really bring the Peruvian to the valley. I like how they will have specials the many other Peruvian restaurants won't even dare try. Most places will not have Aji de Gallina and make it taste great, but Puro Sabor was able to do it. My parents also really liked the Ceviche, Tacu Tacu, Carapulcra, Causa and the anticuchos are really great. There are so many dishes I love to eat, but in general everything is great. For dessert I love to get picarones, they are known as Peruvian donuts. I HIGHLY recommend trying out the picarones, because those are hard to find in other Peruvian restaurants. Another dessert is the alfajores, those are easier to find but they are more common and equally delicious. The only bad thing about Puro Sabor is the prices of the food, which is a little typical of most Peruvian restaurants. It all depends on what you are ordering though. You can get a variety of food just from ordering from the appetizers. This is my favorite Peruvian place to go when I can in the valley. read more

One of the best Peruvian restaurants I've been to. So the parking is horrible and the service is not all there, but it is so worth it. I ordered the "Papa a la Huancaina", very yummy... which is boiled potatoes in a creamy, spicy sauce called Huancaina sauce then its served over lettuce leaves and garnished with black olives and hard boiled egg quarters. Then I ordered the "Lomo Saltado" which is something I recommend for someone eating Peruvian for the first time. It as an entree with rib-eye, spices, onions, parsley, tomatoes, french fries and a side of white rice. DELICIOUS!!! End it off with some "Picarones, which is a popular Peruvian dessert. Kinda looks like a doughnut but it is made out of squash and sweet potato drenched in a syrup like sauce "chancaca" which is a mixture of sugar and honey and a little hint of orange. Also, my parents love the Ceviche, Chupe de Camaron, Papa rellena, and Aji de Gallina. Overall the food is very good and so worth it. read more

We saw the LA Times review and decided to give it a try -- we were not disappointed. The food was fresh and tasty. We had the "Piqueo Puro Sabor" for two, which came with three platters: Choros a la Chalaca (mussels with lemon, peruvian corn, onions, and cilantro), Ceviche de Mixto (so tender: fish, shrimp, squid,...), and then Jalea de Mariscos (fresh fish and seafood, lightly deep fried) eaten with plenty of aji (spicy green sauce). Did I say the seafood tasted fresh? Two people for $35, and we were stuffed. The interior is basic, decorated with Peruvian tourism posters. Wanted to find a new spot close to my house and found this on yelp. I went here a couple of weeks back on a sunday around 8 pm. We ordered a ceviche dish, lomo saltado, and for dessert the picarones. The ceviche was packed with shrimp and the lomo saltado was fabulous! The food came out quickly, service was fast, drinks always filled, and the server was very nice. We had to try the peruvian doughnuts so we split one and gave the rest to a table nearby/. They are fantastic but only wanted a bite. ALOT of them come with one order, I think 5. Wow!! This place blew my socks off! Came here on a whim because we felt like something clean, fresh and probably somewhat raw to eat... I looked up ceviche in the Valley and Puro Sabor appeared. After reading several reviews I thought hmmmmm....let's give it a go!! Very mom and pop inside, very lowkey... but when we saw the food coming out of the kitchen we knew we were in the right place... ceviche heaven!! The lovely server was very helpful and patient with us as we perused the entire menu and finally ordered the mussels, the ceviche mixto, the potato causa with chicken and the potato stuffed with spicy ground beef. All were beautifully presented with plenty of colorful and edible garnish, namely red onions sliced incredibly thin marinated in lemon juice. And the flavors... Ay Carumba!! The heartiness of the two potato dishes were a comfy cozy contrast to the fresh, clean, citrusy bursts of flavor of the ceviche and mussel dishes. The ceviche was hands down mi favorita with plump shrimp, pulpos and fish... and boy was it plentiful! We washed it all down with a passionfruit juice and a chica morada... muy delicioso!! The only part I didn't absolutely LOVE was the picarones... they were good, but I am not a fried foods gal and I was pretty stuffed by dessert time! If you like La Cevicheria in L. A. or La Cevicheria del Mar in San Francisco, RUN, do not walk, to this little hole in the Valley wall! ... you're welcome!! read more

My husband has been bringing home food from this place for the last couple of weeks; the Lomo Saltado is so good! Beats going to Mario's or Choza Mama which are both out of the way for us. I come here regularly with my boyfriend, who is Peruvian, and we love this restaurant. Before I go any further, don't expect great service when you go to Peruvian restaurants. According to my boyfriend, you get close to none when you are at one. I'm not an expert on Peruvian food, but apparently this is one of the best Peruvian restaurants in the SF Valley. They cook great, delicious food every time we come, and we are never disappointed. My favorite dish is the Lomo Saltado. read more

Peruvian food is always a little hit and miss for me. But the one thing I know about it is, I've had much better than at Puro Sabor. You can go to Chozo Mama or Mario's and have a much better experience. The lomo saltado was ok and we had the "chinese style fried rice." Not a lot to choose from menu wise. fellow yelpers, thank you so much for giving me a heads up on this place. i have been looking for a peruvian place in the valley for some time and this place is straight money! i went a couple weeks ago with a friend with high expecations. after reading the previous posts, i decided to bring my spanish-speaking friend to help me out with menu. hahah little did i know, he was not needed. But i am glad he came because we got to order more food. in short, the food was delicious, the waitress was super friendly and spoke fluent english :-) they must have read the previous reviews and hired her recently. ordered the loma saltado.. moneyball.. we also ordered the ceviche mixto.. awesome.. veggies and fishies were super fresh.. but the best dish was one the waitress recommended.. the pescado a la macho.. they gave us a whole bottle of green spicey sauce with our meal. i think we squeezed out half a bottle during out sitting.. it was that good.. the purple corn drink was also good.. i must admit since it is my first visit to puro sabor, i came in with pretty high expectations and all my expectations were exceeded.. i am not new to peruvian cuisine, so it means a lot when i say i loved every dish that was served. i am definitely coming back to this spot. the only bad experience was that we were too full to order any desserts. can't wait to go back to try all those. i will update my review when i get that chance :-) read more

The Lomo Saltado was really good, the Picante de Camaron was delicious and we had the Chicha Morada(a purple corn drink) which was quite good! They are so accomodating & great service...I come with coworkers for the lomo saltado (mixed chicken and steak) with the fries on the side...to keep em crisy & dip them in the spicy green sauce ...yummm! I call the specific order ahead (they get it right each time) and plate is ready when i get there. ..makes you feel very VIP! Definitely need to try the yellow drink (marajuca) too. read more

We got there on a busy Friday night (March 12) and got seated right after 9pm. The place was packed so we cut them some slack and patiently waited for our order of 2 glasses of chicha (which we got right away) an Papa Rellena appertizer, the Aji de Gallina special, and the Lomo saltado de Mariscos for my BF, plus an order of picarones for dessert. After ONE HOUR of waiting, the original waitress who took our order had disappeared. The remaining waitress didn't look our way until she realized we had no food on our table, then finally came and asked what did we order. THEY HAD NO RECORD OF OUR ORDER!!!. So after I repeated what we ordered, she then says they don't have the Aji de Gallina. AFTER ONE HOUR. So I told her to just bring the rest. She did and it was half way decent, in other word edible. The picarones never arrived. Even though there were people who came in after us, they got their food BEFORE us, and we were THE LAST PEOPLE SERVED. No amount of good food can make up for this kind of LOUSY service. And yes, I bought into the Westways review of cheap eats which isn't exactly cheap. I am Peruvian and I recommend that YOU DO NOT TRY THIS PLACE IF YOU ARE HUNGRY. I left a $20 bill and left no tip, the went to Denny's since I was still hungry. This place is HORRIBLE! read more

I decided to try this place today, after hearing about it from a couple of people, it was probably the worse decision I've made in a long time. I went in to place a to go order, it took them 5 minutes to recognize my existence although I was the only person in the restaurant at the time. After placing my order and having a seat in one of the many empty tables and waited for what was eternity. A couple of other customers came in placed their order and received their orders before I did even though they had order the same Lomo Saltado that I had. I decided to give them a couple more minutes. As time passed I decided to ask the 1 of the 2 waiters regarding my order, rather than apologizing or compensating me in some way after a 40 minute wait he took an attitude that I was not expecting and told me to sit down because it was gonna come out eventually. When I received my food it was rather dry and not as delicious as these other raters have posted, perhaps it was the whole service experience that ruined the flavor but needless to say I will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

Piqueo puro sabor! It's enough for 2 or 3 but if you're hungry, it's the best fit for you. Jalea, piqueo y choros.

I hate to have to write this update and reduce my rating, but last time my husband and I went here there were these little flies all over the place. The whole meal we were shooing them out of our food and off the plates. A couple even made their way into our drink glasses. We didn't talk about it much at the time, but if we're doing all of that swatting out in the dining room - just what do you think it looks like in the back without such constant attendance? 4 stars for the ceviche mixto. I liked that I was asked how spicy I wanted it. Minus 1 star because some cuts of fish were really chewy and the tails were left on the shrimp. The flavor and portion size was good. I'd order it again. Service was about average for a small restaurant like this and it was clean. I asked if they deliver and the server said they generally don't, but call and try. I tried the green sauce because it's my favorite thing at other Peruvian restaurants but I didn't like it at all here. There was no creaminess to it and it was overpoweringly spicy. My husband and I dined here with some friends, upon their suggestion, and I have to say this is a great little hole-in-the-wall! He had the famous lomo saltado and I had the pescado apanado and both were delicious. It was hard not to become addicted to the green sauce...I think we finished a whole bottle between just 4 people.
