Ok I totally get it. It's Christmas. Super busy. We sat down at the bar for 15 mins no one said a word to us. Ok let's move over bar stools so we are closer to the bartender. Wait another 10 mins. Loved!!! The vibe, kind of gothic church mood. Drippy candelabra's religious art. Really beautiful, it is loud, wish it were a bit quieter, it was hard to even hear table conversations & the servers. Ok, right up front, I'm not a fan of mezcal. I opted for passion fruit margarita because it didn't mention mezcal, which all the other cocktails did. Not their fault, I should have known, didn't enjoy it, again not the restaurant's fault, if you're not a fan either opt for wine. Service was friendly and welcoming. Food was excellent. What can I say--this place is a vibe. The ambiance is moody and the decor is exquisite. My boyfriend and I went out of our planned date night to start our night off with cocktails here. Quixote is a cool spot with amazing decor. Make sure you leave time to roam around the Lafayette Hotel grounds before or after. The place is uber cool and the Maximalist style really asks for you to take your time, inspecting all the details. Quixote's food is a non-Americanized Mexican cuisine from Oaxaca. They do a good job with staying pretty true to that, even offering crickets (try them, they are a crunchy fun snack, like a chip). Attentive service and moody lighting. Excellent. read more

I came here a year ago with a group of girls and we all had such a great time! We ordered a few different menu items and enjoyed all of them. Both times before our dinner reservation, we got some drinks at Lobby Bar beforehand which were tasty. The vibes throughout the hotel are fantastic. The different rooms and dining areas have so much character to them. Quixote is too dark for my liking, but I understand that that's the feel that they are going for. Our waitress brought us out water and took our drink order. We wanted to get the guacamole to start and my friend asked what a certain add on was and the waitress said it was crickets. My friend said "oh, no thank you" and the waitress said nothing and walked away. My friend wanted to add the queso with the guacamole, but she didn't have a chance because the waitress just walked away without any words or facial expressions. The chicken taco wasn't what I expected because I felt like it was a chicken tender on a tortilla. The chicken was fried well, but I was not a fan of it being in a taco. I really liked the chili garlic shrimp tacos. The cheesy tortilla was a great addition and the chili garlic was very tasty as well. I overall had a great experience and the food is good and the vibe is wonderful. I would recommend coming here! The ambience is unbelievably good. Dark, mysterious, religious yet romantic. We decide on a variety of appetizers. Lucky for us, 3 of the 6 people (Rich, Garrett, Stacy) are experienced Oaxacan eaters that are either from Mexico or have spent time there eating. The items we order and present here are in the order of which people really enjoyed Ensalada Exotica, Squash Blossom, Memelita - duck carnitas and Tamal. "My absolute favorite is the duck" Rich says. Hiroe adds:"I would never guess this is duck". Good Mole" Hiroe adds. Squash Blossoms ~ Elizabeth says: "It's delicious". Garret says: "The mushrooms make the dish. It's unexpected". I've been wanting to try this restaurant since the renovation. However, the service is lacking. Not sure if they were understaffed, but our server was absent for the majority of the time. He never took the entire tables' drink order, instead we had to flag him down several times for drinks as well as to have our water cups refilled and for additional utensils (since they were not refilled). The drinks were ok, they serve them with too much ice, you get very little for almost $20 per drink. The food is ok, I would say it's elevated colonial Mexican food. The plates are small bites, similar to tapas, so if you're super hungry this is not the place. The vibe is intimate, but it's also super dark inside, so very hard to read the menus. We ordered several dishes to try: Fried chicken tacos: we were expecting rolled tacos, however they are tacos. The fried chicken was very hard, maybe overcooked or it was cold? Also there was more breading than actual chicken. These could have been better, they were lacking some salsa as they were very dry. Octopus or pulpo: big portion of octopus served on pipian. The octopus was cooked nicely, not chewy. This dish would be perfect if tortillas were served with it, so you can scoop up the pipian. Crab donut- a crab cake on top of a donut. I'm honestly torn on our experience at Quixote. We had a large group on a Friday night, 12 of us, for a bachelorette dinner. We made the reservation for the prix fix menu, which was 2 individual apps, an entree, and dessert. The meal started with chips, salsa, and guacamole on the table. The chips were crispy, the salsa had a kick but a ton of flavor, and the guacamole was delicious. Our first app was a tuna tostada, which was also super good. The tuna was good quality, the sauce was slightly sweet and tangy. Overall, really good. Second app was the squash blossom. I've never had one but it was fantastic. Perfectly crispy on the outside, the filling had a nice texture with the mushrooms and sweet potato and the aioli was the perfect compliment. For my entree, I went with the vegan tamale. The huitlacoche lends a uniquely almost sweet flavor and the beans were perfectly cooked. Served whole but so creamy. I don't really drink, so I asked for a recommendation on a mocktail and had a tropical concoction of pineapple, coconut, orange and something fizzy, sooo refreshing and mot overly sweet. As great as all the food was, my gripe lies mostly with the service. Our waiter was really attentive, brought water refills often, cleared plates quickly, but it seemed like every course came soooo far apart. At first, I assumed it was because they were SLAMMED, but as I watched the kitchen churn our plate after plate and each course was perfectly temped, it became very clear that the courses are intentionally spaced FAR apart. For reference, our reservation was at 8:15, entrees came at about 10:05. Most of us were also so full and tired by the time entrees came that we ate about 4 bites and were ready to head home. A friend and i ended up leaving right as they were clearing plates for dessert as I had an hour drive ahead of me still and my friend was exhausted. My last gripes were the parking and music! We circled twice looking for street parking, came up empty, tried the valet and was told it was full, and ultimately had to park across the street and down a few blocks. Just very frustrating that only they had about 10 valet spots it appeared and everything nearby is private parking. As for the music, call me old, but I could barely hear our server when he answered questions or my friends next to or across from me at the table. I'm all for setting the mood but my ears were literally ringing by the end of our meal from the constant, loud music; another friend had to put in noise cancelling earbuds to help. Wouldn't have been that bad if the pace of the meal was faster. Overall, the food was fantastic and the decor was gothic and baroque almost, very aesthetic, but the service left us feeling a little unsure if we'd ever return. OMG. This place is great! We had reservations via Open Table for a Tuesday lunch. There was heavy traffic and we were concerned about being on time. When we got there, we were the only guests. Score! It took a while for the eyes to adjust to the dark, but once they did, the place looked amazing. Candles illuminated the space, and the decor made me feel like we were in Europe. The cocktails were delicious but tiny. I had the Masa Fried Chicken Tacos. Those were yummy and unique. It's so simple, but something they did made them extra special. My wife ordered the beet salad and squash blossom. No complaints on either. Next time I'll try the huitlacoche tamale. I love huitlacoche! They have it down in Chula Vista at Aqui es Texococo (amazing BBQ lamb), and I'm hooked. I heard it can get crazy on nights and weekends, especially during the holidays. This place was fantastic. Right when you walk in it's an amazing vibe. Very dark with stained glass. The whole place is very ornate. We had reservations and got there early and was able to be seated. The whole place was pretty packed by about 6:30. The server was very knowledgeable and had great suggestions for our order. The lamb was amazing. It was very rich, tender, and fatty. The mole that came with it was so unique and very good. We also had the memelita and Oaxaca Fondue. The memelita was my favorite. It had a ton of flavors. We walk in and instantly the lighting and decor inside is breathtaking. It genuinely feels like you've stepped into an 1800s Spanish Cathedral. We get seated and our waiter is incredibly sweet and gets our drinks right away. She made sure they gave me a cute cup for my Maria También cocktail since it was my birthday. The drink was delicious and tasted like spiked horchata. I ordered the Huitlacoche Tamal and it was alright. It was kinda small and surrounded by a ton of beans, I almost wish there was maybe some rice underneath it or to the side of it. The tamal itself was juicy but not that flavorful. I made reservations to celebrate my birthday here due to the good reviews. Our waiter immediately made it a point to tell us (reason unknown) that this was a bar, not a restaurant. When it was mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday, he told us they don't do anything, that desserts are on the menu and left. I'm glad other people had lovely experiences on their birthdays, but we did not and we were dressed to the 9's and willing to spend money. Instead, we ate our food and left. No one expected singing waiters or a big to do, but basic kindness would have been nice. Hell, Chili's puts in more effort. I will say, the food and the atmosphere were amazing. Had high hopes for this place given that it is connected to the Lafayette Hotel, which is an exceptional place. The restaurant was extremely dark, so a little hard to navigate around to find the hostess stand so that we can wait to be seated. Once at our table, it was so dark that we had to take out our cell phones to even read the menu. We ordered multiple items as we didn't see any familiar things to eat. Everything we got was weird and did not taste good with the exception for a chicken taco but I guess you can't screw that up. The drinks were outrageously overpriced and came in the smallest glass so it was like three sips and your cocktail was done. Spent over 200 bucks on some appetizers and a couple of cocktails. Did not have a good experience here. This was our Christmas dinner. The Lafayette, as always, was beautiful, lively, and full of people. Quixote was dark and somber, which could be a cool vibe. Unfortunately, our server Roxanne and the rest of the staff we encountered were also dark and somber. My companion hadn't decided on a drink during the first round, but shortly after, was trying to order a cocktail. Our server never came back to our table to check on us after that or to see if we wanted to order anything else. Of course, by the time she brought the check it was too late. Also, when the queso arrived, the food runner dropped it at our table, told us it was hot and there were tortillas underneath the hot plate and then ran off. It took a minute for me to use napkins to be able to safely lift off the hot plate to get to the tortilla plate. I figured this was something the food runner or server should have done. All in all, it was very rushed, not inviting, and the food was just meh as well. We had the queso, squash blossoms, and the rest wasn't even memorable. We came with a party of 7 for my friend's birthday dinner, and while Quixote is visually stunning, the overall experience was overpriced and underwhelming. First, finding the restaurant was more difficult than expected. Since it's inside the hotel, it honestly felt like navigating a maze before we even got to our table. Once inside, the space was extremely busy, tight, and very loud, with small, uncomfortable tables. The very low lighting made it hard to read the menu, which added to the frustration. Service was inconsistent. Our waitress, Roxanne, took a long time to refill water and seemed far more focused on chatting with other tables than checking in on ours. I wasn't drinking that night because I had a headache, and she made a comment asking if I was "the driver tonight," which felt unnecessary and put me on the spot. It wasn't a great feeling, especially during a birthday dinner. As for the food, my two crisp chicken tacos were $18, which felt steep for the portion. They were good, but not amazing, and definitely not memorable enough to justify the price. Most of the small plates also felt overpriced for what you get, and while everything looked nice, the flavors didn't live up to the hype. There are plenty of better options in San Diego that deliver more value and stronger execution. To be fair, the ambiance is beautiful and clearly well thought out, it's very Instagrammable. But beyond the aesthetics, the experience didn't deliver. Between the cramped seating, loud atmosphere, uneven service, and high prices, it just didn't feel worth it. I went here with my boyfriend for our anniversary last week. We've dined here before and loved the food. To my surprise we got sat in a beautiful secluded red room that was close to the entrance, which was perfect for us since I didn't really like how crowded and loud the main dining room was. For drinks we ordered the Motomami and Ponche. We also ordered the Chili Garlic Shrimp Tacos, Oaxacan Fondue, and the Braised Lamb Belly. The tacos we finished immediately, and we made tacos out of the lamb belly, cheese fondue, cactus, and cauliflower side dish! Everything tasted amazing. My boyfriend briefly mentioned how good the Motomami was to our server while I was in the bathroom and when we closed out he brought us two shots of that same drink for our anniversary! They also have a number of other sig drinks like a Oaxacan Old Fashioned, and Mexican spirits raicilla & sotol. Regarding the ambiance, its dark and gothic in here. Nonetheless, the bar is cool and stocked w/ good tequila like G4. The mixologists (like all the ones at TL), take their craft seriously. Our bartender took his time crafting our drinks, and was very friendly. The next time I come to TL, I will have to try the food. I glanced at the menu and I saw pulpo. The flickering candles and lights set the ambiance of Quixote. The stained glass windows, tiled ceilings and tables, wood panels create a gothic church like vibe. We came Sunday midday so it wasn't busy or loud as it would be on a date night. My husband and I chose 4 of the plates to share; crab donut, queso fondue, pulpo, and squash blossom relleno. The crab corn donut is a must order as it's a house speciality, fresh with a spicy kick and nice presentation. Perfect to share for 2. My favorites were the octopus (pulpo), the spice in the sauce on the plate was what made it for me and the squash blossom filled with layer after layer of flavor! To top it all off... fantastic service from our server Luis. We finished with the horchata rice pudding croquettes with a plate coated in a delicious caramel sauce. This is one of the most photograph-able restaurants within the San Diego Area and is a must go for anyone who wants to spice up their social media. My friends and I came to Quixote as a walk-in party for a birthday occasion. On our particular night, the restaurant was in the sweet spot of not too busy so we could get quick seating but busy enough that you are engulfed in the ambience of the restaurant commotion. Of the few items listed on their menu, we ordered the Mamelita, Crab Corn Doughnut, Chili Garlic Shrimp Tacos, and the Beet Salad. All of these items were so beautifully presented and were very easy on the eyes as they were to the tongue. Admittedly, the menu is quite expensive and the volume of food served is quite small. My group ordered 4 items to share amongst 4 people and, while we were satisfied in our experience dining, we were not so satisfied in fullness. Definitely a must try! Love the ambience and that all of it is from an old church. However, it is VERRYY dark in here, needed the flashlight on my phone to read the menu AND to see what my food looked like. Ordered the Ponche Navideño and passion fruit margarita (with mezcal) to start, personally enjoyed the margarita more. Then had the crab and corn doughnut, tuna tostado, duck carnitas and the shrimp tacos. Everything was so flavorful! So so flavorful. The crab doughnut was definitely new and interesting, try it! Out of all of the small plates, the shrimp tacos were the least favorite, as they were quite salty. All in all, must try! Quite cute for a date night. read more

Walk in and WOW! Transported to another world. The photos don't do it justice the same as being there and feeling the vibes. Actually, the Lafayette Hotel is a huge vibe. I do have to say though that the highlight of our dining experience was the service. Yes, the service. Both our bartender and server were patience, kind, helpful, polite, and genuine. Everything you look for in shaping an excellent experience. The selection of tequila and especially mezcal is one of the largest lists I've seen. But again, with an excellent server comes great recommendations and guidance. Loved that our mezcal was paired with fruit to enhance each sip. The food presentation is A++ but there were a few dishes to note on taste. Our spicy tuna tostada tasted very fishy. Kind of making you wonder if it purposely should be or not. Took away from enjoying that dish. The memelita with duck carnitas was a bit too sweet. Pulpo was delicious with bits of homemade corn nuts in a creamy mole sauce. The crunchy texture with the creamy mole and tender octopus was fantastic. Crab corn doughnut...a famous dish by the chef. Lumps of crab meat, on top of a corn cake doughnut, topped with caviar...OMG. Lastly, as recommended by our bartender...the Flan. Talk about contrasting textures in a classic and perfectly executed dessert. Highly recommend. Go to Quixote. Go to the Lafayette Hotel. Check out the vibes. Enjoy the service. My good friend treated me to a bday dinner here last summer! It was a newly opened restaurant located in the remodeled Lafayette Hotel! I arrived first and notice that the decor was dark and church-like. There were stained glass windows and a candle with lots of melted wax on each table. When she arrived, she ordered a Vernita green cocktail and I opted for a mocktail. Service was extremely slow. We didn't get out drinks until at least 20 minutes later. My drink was tart and refreshing though. We only ordered a couple of appetizers to share. The octopus and Oaxacan dip. The cheese dip had truffle and chorizo in it. Both items were pretty good! Then it was another 45 minutes before our dessert came out. It was chocolate ice cream with a candle on top. The ice cream was rich and creamy! Overall the food was good, but I didn't like the long wait times between each course. read more
