Dishes were extremely small and the quality was honestly not that good as far as authentic Mexican food goes in SAN. It's located inside the Lafayette hotel and a little bit hard to find. There is an entrance that leads from outside but also an entrance from inside the hotel and the sign is very small that leads you directly to it. Quixote has a really cool atmosphere and it's located inside the beautiful Lafayette Hotel, which definitely adds to the experience. It's dark and intimate, which some people might love, but it felt a little too dim for me. The tacos and pulpo dish were presented nicely but didn't have a ton of flavor, and for the price, I was expecting a bit more. It wasn't bad, just not as impressive as I hoped. This restaurant is very dark. It's reminds me of church and medieval times vibes. We had late lunch reservations for 3 on Thursday. We had to wait a little bit before we're acknowledged. Once sat service was good. My cousins ordered cocktails and I had the bottled still Bui water. They liked their drinks and my water was very crisp. We settled on Guacamole with Chicharrones, Duck Carnitas, Pulpo and Lamb Belly. A different server mistakenly brought out tostadas, queso fresco and pickles so we got to enjoy those too. A few weeks ago I joined a couple friends for dinner on a Monday evening at Quixote. I'm a bit behind the times, as this was my first time back at the Lafayette Hotel since it was remodeled. Parking was a bit challenging around 7PM, but I found a free street spot within two blocks. When I entered, I joined my friend at the bar for a few minutes as we waited for our table to be ready. The whole restaurant, and especially the bar is very beautiful. The bar resembles a Mexican altar. The restaurant has sort of a dark, gothic feel, especially with the candles all around. The bartender was friendly and chatty. We then moved to our table, where I did feel that it was a bit hard to converse across the table due to the noise level, as it seemed that the music speakers were over our heads. We were greeted by our server right away. The service started out on point, but seemed to drift off a bit later during our meal. My friend and I ordered some drinks while we were waiting. I ordered a Sudden Death, sort of a Negroni with Absinthe. It was OK, but I had hoped for more absinthe flavor. I tried my friend's margarita which was very good and well-balanced so my second drink was a margarita. Once our friend arrived, she ordered a glass of wine. It turned out to be quite pricey, and she wasn't too happy with it, noting that it is more of a cocktail venue rather than a wine bar. As far as the food, we shared the squash blossoms, chicken tacos, Oaxacan fondue (queso fundido), and lentil spread. I think the favorite of the crowd was the fondue. I as super disappointed about the squash blossoms, as that is typically one of may favorite items on a menu. I know they are not supposed to be like Italian squash blossoms, but, for me, they lacked flavor and were not great texturally. I would say the tacos were decent. I was also disappointed in the lentil spread, as I had hoped for more flavor. As I mentioned, the service did seem to get a bit sparse. The table has utensils already on it, but there were not enough for our group. We had some challenges getting more water and napkins. All in all, the place is really beautiful, but the noise level can get in the way of conversation. Cocktails are pretty good. Service is so-so. I am here to say that Quixote makes you more reasonable when you leave then when you came in. Fitting yes? You come, you eat food that is mind lifting and belly satisfying with service that exceeds expectations. Sure, there are esoteric menu items. Sure there are cocktails that you have to ask "wait, what's this ingredient?" But that's the whole point. Expand your horizons, enjoy some mezcals and well blended in molés with your duck carnitas and have a salad with jicama that screams "you know I'm that bish" as you eat it. Thankfully we arrived around 5:30 PM as we had to circle for 30+ minutes before finding a spot that was in the neighborhood on the other side of El Cajon Blvd. I wish they had valet for non overnight guests. Upon initially walking in from outside I had trouble seeing in the dimly lit place but once my eyes adjusted, I could tell that the restaurant was beautiful. We were seated in one of the side rooms which was nice because it was a bit quieter but our table was extremely small (maybe 2 feet in diameter) and instead of sitting across from each other sat next to each other on a couch/bench which would have been great for a single appetizer and drinks. Our server seemed knowledgeable but I wish he had guided us a bit more on ordering because we definitely over ordered. We ordered the Verdita Green which definitely has a spicy kick as well as a drink that was essentially an alcoholic horchata to start. For food we got the guac (good but might not order again as it wasn't super unique), the tamale (I enjoyed the beans that came with this), the fondue (order this- it's great and sizable but I wish it came with a few more tortillas....I was thankful we had the tostadas from the guac for this) as well as the crispy chicken tacos (the chicken is crispy not the taco - I really liked this, probably my favorite of the night and I thought it was unique). Our food came out all out once which actually was a bit stressful as the table was so small that we had to precariously stack dishes so it would all fit. Afterwards we walked around the hotel which is decorated nicely but made me feel old as everyone there seemed to be a want to be influencer. We arrived at 5:30 and were seated within minutes. From the moment I stepped inside, I was in complete awe of the cave-like ambiance, illuminated by endless candles in every direction. In the near darkness, your eyes are instinctively drawn to the glow of the candles--tiny beacons of warmth in an otherwise shadowy, dreamlike space. The stained glass windows--rescued from decommissioned churches in Mexico--added a sense of sacredness to the room, casting faint, colorful reflections that danced across the stone walls. I found myself slowing my pace just to take it all in. Our table was tucked away in a smaller, more secluded section draped in rich red velvet from wall to wall. The setting was intimate, theatrical, and unlike anything we've ever experienced--reminiscent of a scene from Eyes Wide Shut, with its moody mystique and sensual charm. Since we arrived early, we focused mostly on appetizers--and every plate felt like a thoughtfully crafted preview of something greater. We shared several dishes, and each one was a standout--truly 10/10. The staff was warm, attentive, and well-timed, allowing us to savor each course without ever feeling rushed. After every plate, we looked at each other and said, "That might be the best thing I've ever tasted." While dining/after dining we explored the various parts of the restaurant: a lounge alcove with a gray vaulted ceiling presided over by a Mother Mary statue; a dining alcove presided over by a large diablo-esque wall sculpture; the main dining room covered in ornate wooden furniture and carvings with light from backlit stained glass and antique lamps. Wow! Now for the food: we ordered two dishes: the Chamoy BBQ Costilitas (Baby Back ribs with pineapple pico de gallo and esquite style corn ribs); and, the Squash Blossom (sweet potato, mushroom duxelle, corn tempura and horseradish aioli). The different rooms and dining areas have so much character to them. Quixote is too dark for my liking, but I understand that that's the feel that they are going for. Our waitress brought us out water and took our drink order. We wanted to get the guacamole to start and my friend asked what a certain add on was and the waitress said it was crickets. My friend said "oh, no thank you" and the waitress said nothing and walked away. My friend wanted to add the queso with the guacamole, but she didn't have a chance because the waitress just walked away without any words or facial expressions. The chicken taco wasn't what I expected because I felt like it was a chicken tender on a tortilla. The chicken was fried well, but I was not a fan of it being in a taco. I really liked the chili garlic shrimp tacos. The cheesy tortilla was a great addition and the chili garlic was very tasty as well. I overall had a great experience and the food is good and the vibe is wonderful. I would recommend coming here! I've been wanting to try this restaurant since the renovation. However, the service is lacking. Not sure if they were understaffed, but our server was absent for the majority of the time. He never took the entire tables' drink order, instead we had to flag him down several times for drinks as well as to have our water cups refilled and for additional utensils (since they were not refilled). The drinks were ok, they serve them with too much ice, you get very little for almost $20 per drink. The food is ok, I would say it's elevated colonial Mexican food. The plates are small bites, similar to tapas, so if you're super hungry this is not the place. The vibe is intimate, but it's also super dark inside, so very hard to read the menus. We ordered several dishes to try: Fried chicken tacos: we were expecting rolled tacos, however they are tacos. The fried chicken was very hard, maybe overcooked or it was cold? Also there was more breading than actual chicken. These could have been better, they were lacking some salsa as they were very dry. Octopus or pulpo: big portion of octopus served on pipian. The octopus was cooked nicely, not chewy. This dish would be perfect if tortillas were served with it, so you can scoop up the pipian. Crab donut- a crab cake on top of a donut. We made the reservation for the prix fix menu, which was 2 individual apps, an entree, and dessert. The meal started with chips, salsa, and guacamole on the table. The chips were crispy, the salsa had a kick but a ton of flavor, and the guacamole was delicious. Our first app was a tuna tostada, which was also super good. The tuna was good quality, the sauce was slightly sweet and tangy. Overall, really good. Second app was the squash blossom. I've never had one but it was fantastic. Perfectly crispy on the outside, the filling had a nice texture with the mushrooms and sweet potato and the aioli was the perfect compliment. For my entree, I went with the vegan tamale. The huitlacoche lends a uniquely almost sweet flavor and the beans were perfectly cooked. Served whole but so creamy. I don't really drink, so I asked for a recommendation on a mocktail and had a tropical concoction of pineapple, coconut, orange and something fizzy, sooo refreshing and mot overly sweet. As great as all the food was, my gripe lies mostly with the service. Our waiter was really attentive, brought water refills often, cleared plates quickly, but it seemed like every course came soooo far apart. At first, I assumed it was because they were SLAMMED, but as I watched the kitchen churn our plate after plate and each course was perfectly temped, it became very clear that the courses are intentionally spaced FAR apart. For reference, our reservation was at 8:15, entrees came at about 10:05. Most of us were also so full and tired by the time entrees came that we ate about 4 bites and were ready to head home. A friend and i ended up leaving right as they were clearing plates for dessert as I had an hour drive ahead of me still and my friend was exhausted. My last gripes were the parking and music! We circled twice looking for street parking, came up empty, tried the valet and was told it was full, and ultimately had to park across the street and down a few blocks. Just very frustrating that only they had about 10 valet spots it appeared and everything nearby is private parking. As for the music, call me old, but I could barely hear our server when he answered questions or my friends next to or across from me at the table. I'm all for setting the mood but my ears were literally ringing by the end of our meal from the constant, loud music; another friend had to put in noise cancelling earbuds to help. Wouldn't have been that bad if the pace of the meal was faster. Overall, the food was fantastic and the decor was gothic and baroque almost, very aesthetic, but the service left us feeling a little unsure if we'd ever return. Oh, and they only have 2 bathrooms for Quixote and the hotel lobby so the line gets LONG! read more

Such an amazing place! We came here to celebrate our engagement and they treated us with so much care and love. The restaurant itself is sooo cute and well decorated along with the other bars that it is attached to. The food was delicious and such an interesting twist to regular menu items.
