We have enjoyed many lovely dinners at Hillstone group restaurants and we are locals, having dined at R&D Yountville several times. Rutherford Grill has been an all time favorite where we frequently bring out of towners. The recent experience we had however has ruined this and all their sister restaurants for me forever. And I see I am not at all alone in having experienced the extremely uppity SNOBBY staff that infects this once great place and left a horrible taste in my mouth. (Search 'rude' in the reviews for this place, there's an abundance of rudeness!). We were treated like rodents by the hostess PAULA. I had made a reservation weeks earlier to enjoy a Family Valentine's dinner. Well I completely forgot to add 1 extra person who decided to join us at the very last minute so we were a party of 5 instead of 4. Mind you, 1 of 5 was my 2 year old girl who typically sits on mine or dad's lap. Never in a million years would I have thought that the hostess would actually TURN US AWAY saying "we're fully committed for the evening" because she couldn't seat 5 people together or accommodate us for having our small child in tow. And I see from other reviews it's as I suspected - she completely LIED to my face. The rule is no more than 5 to a table -- not 4. I politely pointed out several booths where families of 5 (not 4) were sitting together. We were totally discriminated against I suspect for coming in with children, a stroller or possibly having a blended family with minorities. Who knows! But I have never been turned away for having an extra child to seat at the table being told "we're fully committed" ready to slam the door in our faces as if I didn't make a reservation at all. She was completely snide and unemotional when delivering the news, zero EQ. I tried to reason with her and apologetically asked for her nicely to reconsider and work something out. It was pouring rain outside and we weren't going to be able to find anything else at that hour. She was not having it. She repeated "we're fully committed for the evening." I was honestly heartbroken I couldn't sit for dinner with my family as planned. So so rude, such a turn off!! RD kitchen in Napa was the biggest disappointment. We went there hoping similar environment and service what we had at Newport Location. We dined at the bar. Their draft beer section was not working, We ordered from their limited bottle selection. I asked for a sprite or 7-up, they had none. If I had to rate the food it'll be 5 star. Service was 1star. Considering bar was not busy, they had only 2 people dining at the bar, it was impossible to get one of 3 bartenders attention to ask for silverware or ask to pay for our food. We were out wine tasting yesterday and had a reservation for 3pm. There was 8 of us but they were unable to accommodate all of us at the same table which kind of sucked but it is what it is. Our sever Christina was so very knowledgeable of theme u and really engaging with us. We went with her recommendations and she didn't steer us wrong. The Cubana was VERY unimpressive looking on the plate but made up what was lacking visually with the amazing taste it had!! The chicken sandwich was crisp and hearty and the prime rib sandwich literally melted in your mouth! One request would be to add au jus for it but they don't offer it the bread on all the sandwiches could t have been more fresh! Went here yesterday for lunch with my family. Spencer was our server. He had no energy and did not even ask if we were celebrating anything special. For a place like this you would think you'd connect. We ordered avocado sushi it was crap. No flavor and tooped with dry toppings. Beef short ribs could be more tender and served hot. Was luke warm. Trout dip lacked flavor. Deviled eggs were too overpowering in taste of whatever sauce they made. The fries lacked salt. Tuna sandwich also lacked flavor. Mojito was watered down. The kale salad was decent. This place doesn't cater to families with toddlers. They did not have highchairs or booster seats. We were stuck with our toddler sitting on our lap while trying to eat. We had our phone on the table with mute on. A few times the manager Micah passed by. He stooped down to my husband and told us rudely to turn our phone off and that no noises should come out of our phone. Well we had it on mute since we started it. Mica lacks managerial skills. He came off rudely to us paying guests. He did not even ask how our food was nor did he even apologize to thank us about our phone being on. This place lacks big in customer service skills. Stopped into R+D kitchen for the first time on Sunday with my gf and my Labrador. We got a table outside. My friend had been here before. Off the bat- the place is gorgeous and very ritzy which is expected for Napa! The outdoor menu is different then the indoor menu which I know was really disappointing to my friend. It made me sad because she was telling me how good the sushi is and everything else. We were fueling up before a hike so that's why my dog was with us. First off not a single person working came over to bring my dog a bowl of water. Normally this happens immediately. I was a little let down that they don't seem to respect furry friends. I ordered a coke which came in a glass bottle and my friend wanted a lemonade. They said they didn't have lemonade just juice and sodas. She ended up with a mojito mock-tail which she said was okay. We got the guacamole and cheddar jalapeño dip to start. The jalapeño dip was by far one of the best I've ever had. Magic! I then got the prime rib sliders and my gf got the chicken sandwich. Yesterday, Oct 23, we stopped by on our way home from Healdsburg. 2.5 hr drive still ahead. A friend who lives in San Diego recommended this restaurant, so we had to give it a go because we see her next week. Friendly atmosphere, quiet enough to chat and prompt service. My wife and I both ordered the Chopped Kale Chicken Salad. She a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and I a bottle of sparkling water. Within a few, maybe 8-10 minutes our plates were delivered. OMG! What a great dish - everything properly chopped and the chicken bite size with a yummy vinaigrette. All just tasty. You can't beat this item. But the piece de resistance was for me the Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese filling and toasted half walnuts - carrot cake isn't my go to usually, but I took a chance and did I win big time accompanied with a hot cup of fresh coffee. Came here on a Saturday afternoon after visiting a winery nearby. Glad we made reservations because wait time for a small party was 45 minutes to an hour. There's tons of outdoor patio area to sit in while you wait. Service was prompt and friendly. We shared a salad and two entrees. Big fan of the yellowtail sashimi salad! Came here because I can bring my dog. It was a busy weekend and I definitely noticed right away. I sat in the Adirondack chairs and ordered drinks and fries, waiting for a table outside when space opened. My fries arrived right away, and the rest was a bit mixed up. The waiters had the numbers mixed up. Between three tables, we had to figure out who ordered what. I think the numbers on the orders got messed up. We are banished to the garden area in shame while looking at an empty patio and even slower resturant. We finish drinks and leave. Hillstone this is probably not the best time to have stupid rules that prevent people from spending money at your already empty restaurants. I will not be returning nor will I recommend R&D to any visitors. On a Saturday afternoon, we entered the restaurant around 12:30pm as it began filling up with patrons and the tempo of service was beginning to pick up. We were warmly greeted and seated. We ordered the Nuevo Cubano Sandwich ($20), Newporter Salad ($25), Pan Asian Salad with pork ($30), Crispy Chicken Sandwich ($21), and a few orders of the Hand Cut French Fries ($7). The overall quality of the food was above average, and the portions were small. The service was good and several servers came by to provide water, deliver our orders and take our plates away. The service was swift and attentive especially given that we were the only outdoor seating at that time (random weekday lunch). Notably, decent amount of parking available, plenty of outdoor tables (first come first serve), and there are fire tables for evening use. Service a bit slow with Hardly any customers but everyone was nice. It was a rainy cold day and we asked for hot tea which the said they did not have. Went here with the wife. Food was phenomenal! Ambiance was just as great what really set this place apart was the service. Our server James was outstanding! He gave us some great recommendations, anticipated our needs and at the end of the meal after I had paid the bill my wife decided she wanted the chocolate chip cookies (sooo good) went to the host stand to let James know that we wanted the cookies and to pay for them. He comped them for us and put them in a really nice bag! I have worked in the service industry before and in some really nice 5 star hotels and this was beyond 5 star service. We came for a date night/celebrate my bday so we set up reservations online about 3 weeks in advance. It was easy and I really liked the reminders/confirmation. Arrived a few minutes early but was shown our table after a short wait. The restaurant is cozy. I love the set up with the bar, large booths and the dim lighting. The menu has something for everyone!! No kidding. Try the smoked trout dip! You won't regret it. They even gave us extra crackers. I enjoyed everyone's favorite" chicken sandwich- Perfect bites and the slaw is wonderful. We tried the "pressed sushi"- didn't know what to expect, but it was delish! Not sure why there's so many mediocre reviews of this restaurant. It's a moderately priced (for Napa Valley) relatively casual restaurant (went wearing t shirt and jeans) with friendly waiters. Thought it would be useful to make a reservation online before we went on a Saturday for lunch, but didn't seem necessary. I was initially concerned about how thin the fried chicken in the sandwich was but turns out there was a reason for it. Today, I'm in Napa again. It feels good to be back in Wine Country. I seen this all the time going towards Yountville. I'm finally at R&D Kitchen this Sunday evening. I really like the Architecture of this building, the Stone Masonry stands out. The decor looks intimate, elegant, and very Wine Country in here. I had to get me two big slices of the Wild Mushroom Meatloaf and some Greens, an American Classic. It looks really good. I think I never tasted a Meatloaf quite like this. It's not as compacted or firm in that culinary context, it's light, Beefy, savory, and still holds its texture and contrast. It was just out of this world. The Polenta is somewhat different than Risotto, resembles more like Grits, and so fragrant, creamy, and velvety. The Broccoli Rabe was in season, it was so fresh, prepared simple, but was so flavorful and fresh. It was executed so well. I give this 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. That's a very high score. read more

For starters, we got the dip duo which has jalapeño queso and guacamole with hand-cut tortilla chips. We also got the carnitas sandwich and Ding's crispy chicken sandwich with their house-made buns. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ESTABLISHMENT. I had a truly disturbing experience at R+D Kitchen that I can't stay quiet about. My group--diverse, friendly, and fresh off a bike ride--was treated with open hostility and subtle, yet clear, discrimination. A host came charging up to us as we walked into the courtyard and we were met with crossed arms, cold stares, and not a single word of welcome. Instead of offering a wait time or asking for details about our party, she stood silently, and essentially shooed us away with body language that said loud and clear: "You don't belong here." You could see she liked and was used to doing this. We weren't underdressed. We weren't rude. We were just... not who they wanted to serve. Maybe it was our racial diversity. Maybe our appearance didn't scream "rich enough." Whatever the reason, this type of exclusion has no place in 2025--especially not in California. Restaurants are supposed to be about hospitality. Instead, R+D Kitchen made us feel like outsiders on our own turf and very unwelcome. If their standard for service is elitism or entitlement, they can keep it. But they should know: people talk. And we're done pretending this kind of behavior is normal. Avoid this place if you value inclusion, kindness, or basic respect. There's a location in OC and maybe an LA location but my favorite is definitely the one in Yountville. Ambience very clean, a tad dated. The food is excellent! A few of my favorites are: coconut shrimp roll, the Newporter salad and the prime-rib sandwich. Service great! Enjoy! read more
