My wife and I dined there for a late lunch earlier this week. We have eaten here numerous times before, and liked it, but it was just okay. If we were giving it a grade, it would rate at a, "B" (*good in effort and the results... but not amazing or anything to sit down and write a yelp review about). But this time, I really-really enjoyed the experience. So much so, that I am now typing out a review. My hope is that someone else (*that would be you) might have a similar experience up at RA Sushi. For us, the stars aligned (as they sometimes do) and all parts of the meal converged to create an almost-perfectly assembled puzzle of culinary pleasure. The staff was welcoming and charming. As we pulled open the large entrance door, the hostess greeted us with a warm and welcoming smile. Our waiter was observant (but not overly so) and checked on us periodically to see how we were faring. He made suggestions and engages with a really good demeanor that some people just seem to have that makes them immediately likable. The ambiance was comfortable and pleasant. We were there towards the end of the lunch service, so tables were starting to clear. And most importantly, the food was exceptionally tasty. My wife and I apparently were mind-melding as we looked over the menu, for when the waiter returned to our table to take our order we both had decided on the same bento box...the one with steak, sashimi, a fresh salad, and an assortment of vegetables and shrimp tempura. I enjoyed all parts of the compartmentalized presentation, but the "stand out" for the box was, by far, the sashimi. I say the following with all-honestly: Those sliced bits of fish were as fresh and succulent as any that I have ever had. I am originally from Hawaii (where sashimi is a big part of local cuisine) and we visited Japan a few years ago and enjoyed sashimi from fish that was just-pulled from the sea. I am a little perplexed as to how, here in land-locked, Tucson that fish was so incredibly fresh. But somehow, it was and each chew that I clumsily chop-sticked into my face was savored and deeply enjoyed. Up at the start of this review, I described the experience as "almost perfect"--hinting that something was not exactly right... The minor speed- bump for the meal occurred when I took my first tentative nibble of the steak. It was "sizzley-hot" upon touching down on our table, so I took a small teeth-only-to-protect-my-lips-from-getting-burned bite. The first chew of meat that I took had a small wedge of cartilage or gristle. As it turns out, that was the only piece of the entire assembly of small bits of steak that was imperfect. That may be a pretty-good metaphor for the experience that we had at RA on that Thursday afternoon, in early July, in the year of our Lord 2026. We began the meal knowing that it was going to be pretty good (*based on past experience), but didn't expect a "stand out" lunch. Similarly, the first bite of steak was flavorful, but not fantastic. But, then to our pleasant surprise, the meal really found it's stride and came together to become memorable. (Eh, maybe that was not that great of a metaphor for the experience--but you get the idea). My wife (who is not as easily impressed as I am), agreed that it was really-really good. Further evidence of her really liking the meal came when I over-heard her tell my daughter, on the phone, later that evening, that we all really need to go back, the next time she comes to visit us in Tucson. read more

Not great. Sadly, I chose this place based on the reviews and the photos. The food quality reminded me of PF Chang's, which has gone downhill substantially in the last few years. The food tasted cheap. The service was just as disappointing. We had a reservation. We asked to sit on the patio. The hostess said she would follow us out with menus. She did not. We sat for over 20 minutes then had to ask three people for a menu. Our server was pretty absent as well. He was nice, though. The patio also felt dirty. There was blowing trash. Our annual trip to La Encantada shopping mall also includes a visit to RA. Our service was on point and the place was somewhat busy for lunch. Some spring breaks have started in the city. We dined indoors and it was cozy, with great background music on. Some of their dishes need to be replaced as they show worn spots and stains. Overall our visit was great. Our food was terrific, but my salmon bowl was just okay. The salmon was overcooked and I wish it had more veggies. This was disappointing. I was in the mood for cold, fresh sushi on a hot summer day and ended up having such a poor experience. We were seated quick but it took a while to even get water. We then waited a good 15 minutes or so to get our orders taken. Their AC was broken (or non-existent?) and their fans only blew on a few tables so we were both hot and parched. Also I get that it's a "modern" Japanese restaurant but I found the artwork of Asian women along the walls offensive. My family ordered different bento boxes, which they said were just okay. I ordered some takeout from here two days ago. I got the Filet Mignon with Lobster ($55.50) with some ginger sauce ($2). The lobster was small and not particularly flavorful, but it was a full lobster. The steak was delicious. I also got a Philadelphia Roll ($14). It came with no ginger or wasabi. It was good, but I missed the accoutrements. (The online menu says you can order "extra" ginger and wasabi for $1 each, which implies that you will get the regular amount for free. Not so.) I also got Spicy Shrimp Soup ($13.50) and Pork Gyoza Potstickers ($13). Both were good, especially the soup. My order was ready when it was supposed to be and was correctly filled. Ambience is great. And the staff is fabulous even when they're really busy they watch out for each other and make sure your service is taken care of. The UVA volleyball team came in slightly after us with 25 people and then the lunch crowd hit. Our food came out promptly still and was hot and delicious. My husband and I dined here about two weeks ago. It was a pleasant surprise to find that they had a special menu for guests with food sensitivities. We started with a couple of their Old Fashioned's made with Japanese whiskey and Japanese yuzu bitters. It was a nice twist on a classic cocktail. We had MISO SOUP, UCHI NO SALAD (mine gluten free and his from the regular menu) and for our entrees, I had the NIGIRI ASSORTMENT and he had the SASHIMI ASSORTMENT. Disappointed overall. This was supposed to be a simple family birthday dinner. Sushi won the dinner spinner, and Ra Sushi was the highest-rated place nearby, so we gave it a shot. Service was slow. It was busy, but not so busy that the delays made sense. Food took a long time to arrive, and we were given free miso soup because of the wait, which I appreciate, but it did not really make up for the experience. I ordered an Old Fashioned and had to ask for it three times. What I was finally served was warm, watered-down whiskey with an orange. No bourbon, no bitters, no ice. When they "remade" it, they simply poured it over ice and added a cherry, which still was not close to an Old Fashioned. The ambiance was about what you would expect, maybe even good, but it was overshadowed by the rest of the experience. $180 for the night broke down to roughly $35 worth of food, a $5 drink, and about $140 for the experience, which was not worth it. read more

There were many tables- outside & inside- unoccupied, and I was seated at one of the best ones, being the booth area. The waiter I had was very nice and patient as I needed extra time to decide on what to order. I chose the Pork Gyoza for my starter and the Nutty Grilled Salad with Salmon, along with a Dragon Bite cocktail. Everything was sooo good, you should've seen me wolf down that salad! The gyoza was a little lacking in flavor; I felt like it was missing something that I tasted in other versions I've had in the past. I was in RA recently due to work travel. I happen to be in during happy hour so shaving a few bucks off the meal is welcome. I tried the crispy spicy tuna app and the spicy tuna roll. Both were decent in its own way. I like the prep on the tuna that was on the crispy rice app more. I can taste they use sesame oil as one of the ingredients. It was nice because I was in before the busy dinner rush and close to the hotel I was staying at. Id eat there again in a pinch. I cannot imagine paying more than the happy hour prices though. It's decent but kind of over priced compared to quality. I've had much better and a lower cost. Service was okay but the waiter was really shy or nervous. He forgot to put in half my order and had a gap between plates. It kind of annoys me when servers say confirmation things like "no problem" or something when you put in your order. I know we are conditioned to do that in general but we need to come up with different language. Because my snarky mental response is "I hope it isn't a problem because why am I eating out then?" I'm in customer service so im acutely aware of those things and try and highlight them to my team when I hear them. Anyways besides that it was decent and better than fast food junk on the road. My family went there to celebrate my daughter's college graduation. We had a reservation, but at first they said we were going to have to wait an hour. And then they found our reservation. Everybody's food came out at different times. Several of the tables near us got their food before us, even though we were there first. My daughter, the person of honor, got her food last. It took an hour and a half for her to get her sushi. This was after waiting for half an hour just to order. We had to ask multiple times for things like water, soup, salad, miso, ginger, soy sauce. We ended up having to get several of our entrees to go because they took too long. The chicken teriyaki was way over cooked. The chicken was dry and rubbery. The sushi was ok but not with the price tag. They comped 1 of the rolls. They promised to comp the dessert and one other roll but they didn't. There was no manager to complain to because the only general manager was bussing tables and washing dishes. The waiter was training to be a manager so he was acting as manager that night. I don't blame the waiter. It was the kitchen's fault for the food not being ready. However, some of the blame has to land on whoever was supposed to be management that night.
