Who would have guessed there would be an eatery that serves Ethiopian cuisine near the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in northern San Fernando Valley? Featuring about 5 different varieties. No need to go to Fairfax to Little Ethiopia, an hour away. Interior is decorated mostly with all things western cowboy with smattering of movie stars & bit of British royalty. Other menu items are basically American diner breakfast, lunch, dinner, punctuated by standard northern Mexican. Service is polite, understatedly welcoming and subtly aware. My ice tea was refreshed many times due to the piquancy of Dorowot. 1) Dorowot/Ethiopian Chicken: Injera, a hole pocked, spongy, huge "pancake" made from Teff, gluten-free, faintly nutty, earthy grain native to Ethiopia. It reminds me of Indian rice based Appam with many holes from the carbon dioxide given off while the batter mixture is fermented. Dorowot here is not slowly stewed for 3 days to create a rich, dark, thick, sauce demi-glace by the likes of Master Chef Genet Agonafar, but the dark red, paprika enriched thickened sauce may be braised for about 3 hours which is enough to mellow out the chiles so it only leaves a slow burn. Chicken leg & thigh cooked in this red sauce anchor this main dish. The three vegetable accompaniment are: a) Soft, smooth, velvety, sweet cabbage cooked with buttery olive oil b) Chunks of earthy, dulcet red beets that have an initial firmness yielding to cleavable softness. c) Collard Greens are chopped with pieces of garlic, cooked retaining fresh greenness. Ranch Side's Dorowot at $21 may be a good value compared to the more detailed $31 Dorowot by Genet. 2) Awazè Tibs: Sweet, butter aroma hits first, Acidic tomato paste-like, red chile piquancy. Slow burn as well as a subtle smokiness to this complex stew. Owner explained the Berbere was the name of the chile based spice mix. There is a subdued sourness that comes into play along with aromatics from chopped onion and green bellpepper. I ordered off menu so I asked that the mushrooms and cubed beef be mixed together. Mushrooms are soft and cushy while the beef has a good chaw to add contrast in texture. 1-2a) Old Prague Traditional Czech Beer, Bohemian Premium Lager: The art on the can depicts elegant old buildings of the Stare Mesto old town and picturesque Karlov Most crossing tbe Vlatava River on the way to Hradcany castle. Toasty, roasted grain, light fizzy acidity, brown sugar, long lasting sweet, burnt, tingly finish. 3) Peach Cobler has a wheat flour crust that is very moist and plush to the point of feeling almost like a pudding picking up the cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg spicing. Canned yellow Cling peach slices seem suspended in this rather overly sweet, rustic version. I had to take the peach cobbler home since it was so sweet. But glad I did since it pairs perfectly with strong Japanese Matcha, powdered green tea. 4 stars for a taste of Ethiopian international cuisine

We made a quick stop here on a drive and were absolutely blown away! They had fresh, delicious homemade peach cobbler straight out of the oven. The smell inside was wonderful, but the taste was absolutely delicious. It was still steaming warm when they handed it to us! The staff was incredibly welcoming and provided exceptional customer service that made our visit even better. We couldn't even wait to eat it and actually devoured it while we were on the road. This may officially be our new favorite spot for a quick driving break and an amazing treat. We will definitely be back!

My boyfriend brought me on a date yesterday and the food did not disappoint. This was my first time trying out Ethiopian food and I thought it was soooo delicious. I love that it is vegetarian and that I get to use my hands to enjoy it. My bf and I are definitely coming here again for future dates.

The Ethiopian food is great. The chile relleno was not great. The chile part was good, but the sauce on top didn't taste great. The rice was also bland. I'll definitely come back for the Ethiopian.

(3/5) Food was actually solid -- biscuits & gravy were rich, eggs cooked right, and the sausage hit. No complaints on flavor. But the experience got weird real quick. The menu clearly states that Ranch House breakfasts come with your choice of country potatoes or hash browns. I ordered the Biscuits & Gravy & Eggs (which is listed in that section), but when I asked about the missing hash browns, I was told they don't come with it and it's an extra charge. That directly contradicts what's printed on their own menu. Not trying to argue over potatoes, but it's the principle either update the menu or honor what it says. It just leaves a bad taste, and not the good kind. I'd come back for the food, but the pricing/menu clarity needs work.

This was our first time here for breakfast and it was soo good we came back for dinner as well. The customer service from the employees and the owner are outstanding. The place is kind of old school but it has a good vibe to it. We got some breakfast items and they were all very delicious and fresh. They have outside seating as well which is really nice. The parking is plenty. We also got the peach cobbler to go but I highly recommend you eat it there. Definitely give it a try if ever in the area. We'll be coming here more often that's for sure.

just moved into the neighborhood and had such a wonderful experience at The Ranch Cafe. Our waitress, Lee, truly made our day. She was so welcoming, kind, and genuinely excited to have us there, which meant a lot as newcomers. Lee gave us great recommendations and everything she suggested was spot on. The food and service are incredible here! Love family run businesses like this. They serve American, Mexican, and Ethiopian food here. I went with my kids and of course they had a standard American breakfast - pancakes, eggs, bacon. I love Ethiopian food and there's not many options around but their veggie plate and lentil sambusa are amazing! I have yet to try their Mexican but I'm sure it's as delicious as everything else here. Can't wait to return!

We stopped here randomly while looking for a breakfast spot later in the afternoon. It's right off of the osborne exit from the 210 freeway. It's an interesting restaurant, the menu is split with american/mexican/ethiopian food. My husband and son ordered breakfast, my other son had chicken fingers/fries. I had the ethiopian veggie plate, it was really good, both spicy and flavorful. I was stuffed and could barely finish half the plate. Service was great and the owner also was kind and came out to greet us. We definitely will be back!

We stopped here for lunch on our way out of LA up to Sacramento. Super nice owners and a quiet ambiance. Not much by way of decoration. I can't recommend the American dishes- they were ordinary- but the Ethiopian food seems to be the way to go. I had the samosa-like appetizer with lentils and it was the most interesting thing I tried here. Very flavorful and tasty. This seems like a good place to try Ethiopian food! read more

I've been here several times and on average, it's just OK. If you want a local place to eat when your in the area, for me, close to the ranch, then this works for a quick bite. Don't expect too much. The food has it's good and bad days. The service is fair as well. I would suggest sticking to the burgers and you'll be safe. Much beyond that could prove to be a disappointment. The parking is weird and shares with other businesses. Leaving the lot, you can only go one way so parking on the street behind make it easier. read more

I have been driving by this place for a while, so one day some friends came in from New York. I took them there for some country cooking. The Service was ok coffees all around then the food took a while. The cook was in the restroom for some time, when returned the potatoes were cold, eggs were runny, bacon was not crispy. I give this restaurant a 4* just because I don't believe a restaurant should be 5*'s. This is a great place to grab a bite to eat. The breakfast is top quality for a country style restaurant and they have a new coffee vendor, that is pretty darn good. The staff is enjoyable but I come for the great breakfast options. Wonderful service, food and atmosphere. We've lived in the valley for 6 months now and this was the first place we tried because we didn't have a fridge yet. The staff was so welcoming and quick! It gets a little crowded after 9:30 but it's never overwhelming or too loud. The food is of great quality and the portions are wonderful for their pricing. When we can spare the money to go out for breakfast, it's always here. My fiancee loves their Fir Fir! read more

Absolutely beautiful food!!! Three of us went there after a day at the range and we all loved our meals. We had the Ethiopian dishes of Sambusa (beef), the Vegetarian Plate and the Awaze Tibs. Came here for a late breakfast and this has always been one of if not my favorite place to eat in the valley! The inside has a nice Spanish/western vibe to it which is extremely authentic being it's located in equestrian styled neighborhood! Love it! Ordered the breakfast sampler which was extremely huge I could barely finish it! And extremely worth it for the price, a meal like this in LA would easily cost 20+ and taste half as good so I definitely would recommend trying it! Their homemade salsa is also to die for! They're doing a great job with COVID and have the option of scanning a code with your phone to get a digital menu or some ready to read at the front! Plenty of outdoor seating spaced away from each other so there was never a worry in my mind about breaking any regulations! Food was so good I even took a burrito to go for dinner which I never do lol! Try this wonderful family owned restaurant I promise you'll enjoy it as much as I did!!! read more

We came for breakfast... Got the steak fir fir with eggs ( which isn't on the menu btw) and it was super Tay with a nice little spicy kick. My wife got the chicken fried steak with biscuits and gravy. Great gravy and fresh tasting biscuits. The coffee is also fresh and from a local roaster. I will come back and try more of the Ethiopian cuisine. read more

this is a place with a lot of movie stars and cowboys and cowgirls and a lot of bullshit and good food. The cook is great, just relax and think of being out in the boondocks. this is the place to go in this area. Full of super models for waitresses and horse right out side the door. great place. to eat and relax and watch the ranchers come in and talk about horses and polo. read more

I have to agree with another reviewer. Super nice people! Love the ambience of the restaurant. The problem? Overpriced mediocre food at best. Had a turkey club & a side salad. The salad was wilted and brown. How can the chef not notice this? Should've been thrown out days ago. The turkey club was made with pressed, processed meat slices. Not fresh at all. Haven't seen a sandwich like that since my high school cafeteria days. Sorry Ranch Side, one & done.... read more

We heard about this place on FB and decided to try it out. I got a breakfast burritto with sausage and bacon. Excellent. and the hash browns were perfect. My wife had the chorizo and eggs. Delicious. My daughter had eggs, hashbrowns, bacon and sausage. Everything was tasty and the service was good. They also made some fresh tortilla chips for my wife. We plan on coming back and exploring more of the menu. read more

Serves Ethiopian food as well as customary cafe fare. Had tibs in injera bread (spicy stewed beef in a sort of crêpe) - delicious! The woman running the place was very pleasant and helpful. No negatives, didn't get to try any of the other dishes. read more

Let me start by saying this. The owner Ethiopian lady is not, let me re-itererate NOT NICE or WELCOMING! Nor once did she come to ask me how i was doing, others of a different shade she was very nice, probably her existing customers. I DO NOT recommend this place. She didn't even clear the table while i was there. Normally when a patron is finished they (other restaurants) usually comes and clear for you. read more

We went here after the Discovery Cube and had high hopes after reading the reviews. Instead, the place was smoky and other than the onion rings, the food was awful. Our sons chicken strips were raw when we cut them open. Our burgers were over cooked and tasted funny. We will not be coming back. read more

I love this local hot spot. Great breakfasts and burgers. They have a nice little patio and I often take my dog and we sit outside. A favorite spot for local horse riders and musicians. Wonderful staff who owns the place over 20 years. Healthy options on the menu too. I like the vegetarian breakfast burrito. mmmmm! read more

Where to begin? The service was so bad that it was a complete embarrassment to the concept of customer service. To say the waitress was rude is an understatement, but it will have to suffice. The food was inedible to the point where we left our meals untouched before getting up and leaving. Neither their sorry excuse for Ethiopian food, nor their unappetizing Philly cheesesteak sandwich appealed to me or my boyfriend. Pretty much the only saving grace for our extremely disappointing experience was the guitarist in the corner who was playing pleasant music all the while we spent waiting far too long to be poorly served. We took our business elsewhere and will thusly never be returning. read more

Kinda a meh-type place. But, I enjoyed what I ate. I had the quesadilla with carnitas. The carnitas were a lil crispy which I really enjoyed. The restaurants lay out was horrible. It looks like it was abandoned for many years, and they just re-opened last week. The waitress was friendly, a lil pushy, but seemed positive. The prices were what I expected. Our whole group enjoyed their food. The portions for the kids meals were just right. The Mexican food was seasoned well and priced just right. My friend enjoyed her beautifully arranged salad. Breakfast is served all day. :-) So I went with the French toast slam. I was not disappointed. Will definitely come back when we visit the nearby Discovery Cube. The service was great. read more

I love this place. Their staff is made up of very sweet people and I love their food. I'd say this place is sort of hidden at the foot of the hill on Foothill Blvd. and I love going here early on a Saturday morning. It's so peaceful and pleasant. I usually get anything with pancakes. I always get coffee. If you're too lazy to fry your own eggs or even brew your own coffee even if it's as simple as operating a Keurig, you should definitely check this place out. read more

Way to expensive for the very little amount of food I paid for. When you pick up the bag to go, you expect for it to have a little weight for: 1 person 16 dollars. I got this spongy bread with hot sauce and they charged me $5 for just 1 beef sumosa. Wouldnt recommend this spot but I love my african peoples, but wont do it again. Ethiopian food over rated here. Come on now, this goes for African and Mediterranean food, stop over charging Americans just because your food is from over seas, granted its good or different. We like it, but can do it ourself and have other options to eat that are more affordable. Check out my pic of the food. $16 thats it. read more

I just wanted to say that everything about this restaurant is amazing! From the breakfast, to the burgers, to the peach cobbler al la mode! The customer service is wonderful and although the food takes a bit to cook everything is worth every last penny! My favorite dish is the Jr. Slam with the option or chocolate or blueberry pancakes! Knowing myself im a huge sweets fan so i always pick the chocolate pancakes that come with the Jr. Slam. you get a choice of eggs any style and 2 sausages and 2 slices of bacon. Their horchata and orange bang taste just like heaven!!! I've already recommended Ranch Side Cafe to many of my friends and will continue to do so! Keep up the great work! ~Jeremy read more

Chile relleno burrito. Menu read it came with salsa, sour cream, guacamole. Onion rings, side of ranch. I asked if the relleno came not as a burrito, because I didn't see it and maybe the plate sides were different. Waitress said, no. Ok. My friend orders the same and orders lemonade. Waitress brings back two chile relleno plates bathed in salsa and a dollop of sour cream on top. Corn tortillas on the side. MASS CONFUSION ensues. What is a burrito even? What does burrito imply? No guacamole for either plate. No ranch. No lemonade. That in itself was a damn mission to get. The girl was sweet, maybe just starting? The lady from the back was stone faced and slightly unpleasant. Either way, the service was 'meh'. I will go back. But tenders and fries only. You can't botch tenders and fries, right? We'll see. read more

I would definitely order this again, especially with the amazing customer service. We also got a chicken burrito and I think they use the fajita chicken to make it so there were green bell peppers in it, which was interesting. I wouldn't get the chicken burrito again but the wet burrito was really good. If you want great service and tasty food, I'd recommend this place.

I was working in the area and stopped here daily for several weeks. I sat for hours reviewing paperwork and making phone calls. The staff never complained. Only one time did someone seem irritated refilling my coffee....again. The food is edible, but forgettable, like most diners. However, it is a little lighter and fresher than most diners. I think the breakfasts are tastier than the rest of the menu items. The caesar salad was tossed fresh. The coffee was always fresh. It isn't gourmet, but you can rely on it to be good enough to eat.
