This might be my favorite coffee shop I've been to. I found out about them via Beachwood Blendery (lambic-inspired beer project), which is right next door- they blended one of their beers with Recreational's Koke coffee and since the beer was delicious I figured I had to try the coffee on its own. The Koke coffee was amazing with cycling layers of flavor and a subtle but present base that kept it all together. For me, this coffee as well as their others seem to push the envelope on what coffee can be. I don't know enough about coffee to tell what Recreational does differently than other shops, but I can say that I have yet to experience elsewhere what Recreational is pulling off right now. As others have said, the baristas are good as well- they manage to be knowledgeable, cool AND nice, which is of course near impossible to find. Looking forward to my next stop in. read more

I like the look of this place. It's clean. Staff is pleasant. Here's the thing...people confuse bitter acidic coffee as "strong coffee". I got the Espresso con panna...and it tasted like they used a cream cheese based creme... It was so tart and bitter...burnt after taste. People strong coffee can be smooth and flavorful. It doesn't have to be bitter. Also they serve the same basic avo toast & vegan pastries that all the typical "cool" coffee places are serving. Dogs, dogs, dogs. I've been going here for a few years and I really love it. Great vibe, cool people, and excellent coffee. I have to say that recently it has felt a bit like a dog kennel. One morning there was literally dog poop on the floor mat as I came in and 4 to 5 dogs were inside with their owners. Two or three of the dogs were barking and it was almost comical - one dog owner had raw bacon bits on the table and his dog had its paws up on the table's edge. I swear I could see dog hair floating in the air and it just made me feel like this place wasn't all that clean. So I'm gonna give this place a rest. During the visit, ordered the bacon and egg brioche bun sandwich accompanied by their hazelnut latte. I love that they don't skimp out on their bacon and the siracha ketchup adds to the flavor of the sandwich. The latte was perfectly crafted without the overly syrupy/sugary hazelnut addition like other coffee shops. If you're searching for a good old-fashioned black coffee minus the sugar+milk, their expressos are simply lovely! Went here to study right before I was out at a client in Long Beach. Place is great! Got a regular latte and a matcha latte the next day. Both were delicious and had pretty latte art. Workers are great and there were plenty of seating the time I went. The place is well decorated. Definitely a solid place to study or to catch up with friends. I don't usually drink coffee but this place looked too good to pass up! The barista was nice and took his time creating our drinks. My boyfriend and I both got the Honey Vanilla Latte and the latte's sweetness is perfectly balanced with the roasted coffee beans. I was super amazed at the flavor and started bouncing off the walls an hour later because my body wasn't used to caffeine. I would definitely come back again just for the chill atmosphere. My friend and I went here the day after they had their soft opening. The place has a somewhat industrial "modern" style to it. Definitely not like some of the cafes in LB that are filled with couches and such, but I appreciate that. I got an iced latte and it was very nicely done. It's a great place for getting work done. They have plenty of tables with outlets to plug in electronics. They also have a salted caramel affogato that looks absolutely divine. Came here as a last stop on a coffee crawl through Long Beach. The group was pretty wired by this point but we had a sampling of a Macchiato, Espresso, Iced Basil Fruit Coffee and a Sea Salt Affogato. Everything was very tasty but the Affogato stood out from the rest, the ice cream was rich and creamy and I loved the espresso grounds on top! One incredible coffee spot! I loved the food, the atmosphere, and especially the coffee! Loved my iced americano and enjoyed a delectable bacon and egg sandwich which had amazing taste from the sriracha ketchup and crispy bacon. My friend ordered hummus toast and paired it off with an orange mocha latte that was a little sweet but perfect for me. I always love this spot! The coffee is amazing (and I'm picky), staff is friendly, vibe is comfortable, music is good -- sometimes every table is full, but if you stick it out at the counter for a few minutes, something will open up. Today was particularly busy. 10:30am on a Wednesday and I'm just so impressed with the staff. There were two guys working. One handled all food orders (I've seen like five avocado toasts go out!) and the other drinks and the register. Maybe someone called in sick or maybe it's just an abnormal rush, but wow. Staff handled it so well. They didn't stress, didn't rush. Their calm efficiency made me feel content because I knew that when I got through the wait, I was going to have a delicious espresso with no sacrifice on quality. And ah! Best new spot in the LBC. The space, drinks and food are delicious. I have been here about 5 times in the past 10 days and each time gets better. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I had the peppermint mocha that has chocolate from Romeo chocolates, a local chocolatier. It was amazing. I love how they support other local long beach businesses. Foreword: I do not drink coffee, i came in here because my good buddy is a coffee connoisseur, and i knew we had to stop in here when we walked past them. Location: its right next to beachwood blendery, and beer belly. The place is brightly lit, simple design, with unique coffee equipment. the siting has chairs, tables, and also bar siting which make it have a nice close vibe with the barista. Atmosphere: I'm going to give it high ratings because of the friendliness of the barista that we interacted with. She was chatty, and give us some insight into the coffee they make. Coffee: I really want to help in describing the coffee they have, but my friend who understand coffee should be the one writing this, but i do my best. the coffee i had didn't felt like much when it came out piping out, but as it slowly cooled down, different aspect of it started to show. my friend said it had a nice taste of smuckers peanut butter and jam towards the end. Conclusion: if you're a coffee drinker, you can check them out, and experience the range of flavor they offer. the also have cold brews with addition of milk if you like, i didn't see any snacks on hand, so i guess you have to bring your own food to pair with coffee if your into that stuff. read more
