TLDR: food not good, like at all I usually don't leave reviews but genuinely feel like I'd be wrong if I didn't warn people. Nothing I got from them was good, not a single thing. The potstickers actually made me spit them out immediately. I'm not sure if mine were just undercooked or if the pork just tastes like that but I couldn't do it. The food is DELICIOUS. I wanted to start with that. We were traveling through and wanted to stop and eat somewhere. I have a feeling this Resturant's is used mainly as a "to go" kinda place. Got Mongolian beef to go and it wasn't good at all! No spice, no seasoning, no caramelization. It was just a big soupy mess with no flavor! Upon first coming upon this restaurant, they didn't look open. (It looked like they only did take out.) The inside was dark and no one was eating in there. But the door opened and we walked in. It was hot, but they eventually turned on the AC for us. I got the combination plate with sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, and the egg roll. The egg roll was definitely the highlight of the meal. We ate in the restaurant about 5:30 on a Tuesday and were the only ones there which is a shame because the food was fresh and delicious! We ordered the crispy sesame beef, the orange beef (which said spicy but wasn't really), and the strawberry wontons as an appetizer. The service was quick and pleasant as the lady behind the counter greeted us when we walked in and asked if we were dining in or carrying out. When we replied in she seated us with menus and got our drinks. Note: The Pepsi was presented in a can but I was able to get a glass of water. The space is large with an industrial chic appearance. There are two decently sized projection TVs that weren't turned on. There was a steam table which makes me wonder if they sometimes offer a buffet and a small raised platform which may mean occasional music?? Also a separate bar area tucked in the far corner. So, I ordered this through a third party app. Before anyone freaks out, my food was delivered well in tact and very warm. No complaints there. I ordered the Szechuan Tofu (Mapo Tofu), the Dan Dan Noodles, as the House Shrimp and Pork dumplings, and the jalapeño Rangoon. Mapo tofu: 2nd best Mapo I've ever had. (Second only to C17.) Wish it had slightly more sauce and slightly more Szechuan in the sauce (although I know the Szechuan part is an unpopular opinion for some). It was nice and spicy and comforting on one of the coldest days of the year. Dan Dan Noodles: I'm pretty underwhelmed with these. My understanding of Dan Dan (which could be wrong) is that the sauce is supposed to have sesame paste in it to make it creamy and thicker. This sauce was very loose and almost broth like, so I really missed the sesame paste. The base flavor is good, albeit a little mild, so I plan to fix it at home with some sesame paste, sugar, and msg. Shrimp and Pork dumplings: so so so so SO good!! The sauce that they're delivered in is just ... sinfully delicious. Very well balanced with sweetness, saltiness, and tanginess. Certainly a liberal amount of sauce as well. And the spiciness sneaks up on you but is definitely manageable. (This is coming from a white person with a decent-high spice tolerance FOR white people.) Jalapeño Rangoon: if you prefer your Rangoon with a lower ratio of filling to crunch, and a savory Rangoon (absolutely no sweetness in the actual Rangoon) then you'll love these. No spice in the jalapeño at all. Pretty good with the sweet and sour dipping sauce but not for me. (My ideal Rangoon is from Sesame and a close second is Old St. Louis Chop Suey for reference.) forgot to get a pic of these, though. I will definitely order from here again. The general tsos chicken tasted like vinegar and sugar like a literal bottle of vinegar was poured onto chicken which as you can see in my pictures was clearly old and hard. My egg roll was cold and so it had no crisp to it at all. The only good thing I had was the white rice. My delivery was also late considering they were already estimating it would take them 45mins from when I ordered you can I say I was completely annoyed to get my food over an hour later and to see it was old and gross. I am a fan of Chinese food. It was inevitable that in St. Louis, I would open up the Yelp app, type in "Chinese restaurants" and see what downtown St. Louis had to offer. One of the Chinese restaurants that it had to offer was the Red Door Chinese Eatery, which happened to be a couple of blocks south of the 7th at Washington Streets Embassy Suites. It was in the late afternoon after touring the St. Louis Zoo that we dined in the Red Door. With the Cardinals on the road, Downtown St. Louis was dead on this particular Saturday night. Where the Red Door is the majority of the businesses were closed or out of business. In the future this will most likely be changing as cranes bring historic downtown buildings back to life. I am providing this information because the restaurant itself was also pretty dead on a late Saturday afternoon. This contributed to a laid back environment with a low noise level. When we walked inside this dimly lit Chinese restaurant that would be a nice place to bring a date, we were greeted right away. Our table overlooked the buffet bar, a few HD TVs, and the bar. At this time of day, the buffet was closed. Above me I'd occasionally watch the UFC fight on the TV. A want for music contributed to the low noise level that was beneficial to chatting with my family (dad, bro, and I). It is also beneficial if you are on a date. Off the two page menu, I ordered off the Hot Combo Box. I ordered the Beef Pepper Steak. At $8.35 (not a bad price for dinner in downtown) it included fried rice and an egg roll. In my book what is a memorable Chinese restaurant dinner without wonton soup. For $2.95, I ordered the wonton soup for one. With the dinner, we ordered a kettle of hot tea. Before I talk about the food, I need to bring up that I am a big fan of hot Chinese tea. We were sipping this beverage as if the Mississippi River was evaporating. By the time we exited the door onto 7th Street, the waitress had brought three kettles of tea to the table. I love Chinese tea so much that Post-Saint Louis vacation, I have unsuccessfully tried the major Las Vegas supermarkets looking for it. I even went online. The fact that this hot tea was so delicious that I will be visiting an Asian supermarket in the hopes of finding it, is worthy of rounding up a star. Another positive about this hot tea was that this delicious hot tea kept me wide awake. In this very alert state, I savored tasting the Chinese food. In my 40-somethinh years on this planet, I do not recall seeing a bowl of wonton soup stuffed with wontons. Customarily there are two or three wontons in a bowl. This was bowl was quadruple. This observation comes from somebody that grew up in New York where there is practically a Chinese restaurant in every shopping center. Next, I appreciated the New York style egg roll. Living by Las Vegas, it is nearly as difficult finding a New York Style egg roll as finding Chinese tea in a supermarket. I tried to make every moment count eating it. Near the New York style egg roll, I savored the flavorful fried rice. Below the two side dishes, I delighted in eating the tasty beef pepper steak loaded with a delectable sauce, warm onions, and green peppers. In St. Louis Cardinals terminology, this meal hit it outside the ballpark. When reviewing restaurants and businesses, it is important to keep things in perspective. The Red Door Chinese Eatery served me very good Chinese food. However, it wasn't the greatest Chinese food that I had. If I was reviewing it in San Francisco or New York where there are better Chinese restaurants, I would of rated it 3.5 Stars. But, that would be comparing apples to oranges. The reality is that in the Downtown St. Louis of 2018, at least walking distance to Embassy Suites, the Chinese restaurant competition is extremely sparse. Taking into consideration that the Downtown St. Louis playing field features only a couple Chinese restaurants and on account of the outstanding hot Chinese tea that I stated was going to round up my rating half a star; Red Door Chinese Eatery is worthy of Four Stars. read more

The buffet part is standard. ORDER FROM THE CHINESE MENU. I'm talking real Chinese, not the American Chinese stuff (think General Tso's and sesame chicken) everyone has come to identify as Chinese fare. The portions are generous, and the prices are actually surprisingly good considering the restaurant is located downtown. Recommended: Shaoze noodles (noodles with a spicy pork sauce, contains diced green peppers and scallions), cold Sichuan noodles (spicy!), ma po tofu. I haven't tried anything else from the menu but will update the list after a few more visits. The owners are really adorable and sweet too. [08/13/2015:] Got the X1 (Pork & Cabbage Dumplings) and Dan Dan Noodles to go, and they were great, especially the dumplings. Rangoons are not folded and have 20% of the content they should. Chicken fried rice was bland and carrots were cold. And the Moo Shoo chicken came already wrapped and bland.
