This place is fun. Busy, but efficient. The wait staff and manager (?) were totally on top of things. I met my friend here for dinner on a Tuesday night, around 7pm. There are many reasons that I desperately miss being home in NY, but good chinese food is one that I can't get over. This place makes me weep, because there is nothing even CLOSE in Chicago, or even anywhere else in NY for that matter. All of the dumplings are fantastic, especially the soup (for taste) and the pacman (for presentation). The spicy beef appetizer is great. You know what, I can't even go into detail about all the deliciousness on this menu. Every time I eat there, everything is beyond expectation and totally awesome. I think there's a room for a place like RedFarm. The food is good, ambiance is nice, and wait staff very friendly. It perfectly blends in the neighborhood. But I think this is my last visit to a restaurant that does not take a reservation, whose seating is mostly at communal tables with does-not-seat-you-unless-you-are-all-here policy. We paid about $45 per person for Sunday brunch with no alcohol. The food is good but not good enough for dim sum at this price. read more

It was good chinese food. Not bad at all, but nothing extraordinary, and definitely not worth the $$$ pricing or 1 1/2 hour wait. I could have gone to Grand Sichuan in Chelsea and spent a third of the price for what was mostly the same fare. The BBQ Pork Lettuce Wraps were the highlight of our meal. Crispy Duck and Crab Dumplings were satisfactory for their large portion, but the taste of the duck and crab were outweighed by the heavy oil that fried them. The main entrees were the most disappointing and the most expensive. The Three Chili Chicken was literally something that could have come from a fast Chinese take out restaurant for $11 instead of the $26.50 it charged for. The chicken had a rubbery texture. The freshest and tastiest part of this dish were the roasted peanuts. And again, it was doused in heavy oil. The Grilled Jumbo Shrimp with Vegetables and Red Curry fared better. Tasty sauce, fine tasting shrimp, but we scoffed at the $29.95 price. Again, something we could've easily mistaken for weekday takeout. Maybe we didn't order the right things. But we expected more especially based on the buzz - something fresher, more farm to table, and a bit more inventive. The restaurant had a cute brunch vibe with a long communal table in the middle and smaller seating around the sides. No Asian staff (first warning its probably not a very good Asian restaurant) but I think they were going for a more trendy chic vibe with some Asian fusion. We got the oxtail dumplings and the soup dumplings. I thought both were pretty good (surprisingly), albeit small portions and hefty price tags. The duck fried rice was not a resounding success. It was overly oily, not very flavorful, and I'm not a 100% sure had any real duck in it soooooo. PASS. The service was good so points for that. The restroom had one of those automated toilet, ehhhh. Not a fan. Would I go here again? If I wanted a trendy upscale Chinese-fusion experience to impress my midwestern friends who have a lot of dough to spend but don't want to step foot in Chinatown? Absolutely Delicious! The food quality here was fantastic, especially the Dumplings (although stay away from the Key Lime Pie at the end. I don't know WTF I was thinking), and the staff was it's equal. So, why 4 stars? Price is way too high even for the West Village, the decor is extremely plain and they really pack you in for $100-$150 per person. But it's small and constantly packed, so none of that is gonna change. There'll be a line by 5:30 during the week and God knows when on weekends. So, if you've got the dough, you gotta go. At first glance, I thought this restaurant was a farm to table kind of place. Don't let the name fool you. It's a modern take on Asian fusion food and it's amazing. It is always crowded, inside and out. I sat in the middle of the restaurant, community style. There is one long table and different parties all sit together. They don't have to talk to one another, but why not? The food is well worth talking about! Above me hung pipes with a basket suspended from them filled with plants and chopsticks. The tables were wooden and they also have booth style and regular tables for two or more. However, the wait was so long we decided on the community style table. There's a whole section for just dim-sum, and for those who can't eat gluten, a gluten-free menu. They have appetizers, mains and a menu for the specials. The best way to eat here is with a couple friends. You all order a couple dishes, and share them. All of their dumpling type dishes have eyes on them. It's a little quirky, but I enjoy it. Great, inventive, fresh, neighborhood spot. The pacman dumplings were the most memorable, but all the dishes were beautifully presented and very tasty. The neighborhood is great and the decor is modern and inviting. The only two downsides are the lack of reservations and the communal table. It keeps the feel casual, but it does get very loud. The staff is very attentive and gets an A+in all categories , but they try to sell you on the dim sum with dishes like Pac man and the lobster dumplings which were dressed up for presentation but not anything more (~$15). I prefer the crispy beef (yes this dish can be found at PF Chang and Panda Express but I think it's better here) . The curry with shrimp $29 was good (order steamed rice with it) but get it without shrimp and save $10. and the duck fried rice was average . The spare ribs were simple and fine but didn't stand out. The place is super cute but not a lot of breathing room, you feel a bit packed like sardines in the place. The food, however, is amazing. One thing missing was the attitude of the employees. Our server didn't know how to pour white wine. She poured a lot each time and didn't equally distribute the wine. And it was 10:15 they all started stocking beers before we finished our meal. Small place-so the storage for beers is on top of the tables. The atmosphere was ruined we closed our checks and left. Value; 7. Intangibles. Red Farm serves tasty food, make no mistake about it. The food is imaginative and often unexpected. Self-described as "Asian fusion" really doesn't nail it. But I don't have a better description. But (and my use of "but" is decidedly perjorative here) Red Farm is very much a restaurant of the moment. It recently opened to a glittering NY Times review, and is chock-a-block with celebrities. At my table a few nights ago (more on tables, shortly), sat English restaurant writer and Top Chef judge Toby Young. Red Farm is a very small restaurant, and the laws of supply and demand make it very difficult to secure seating within a reasonable period of time (no reservations). Three of us arrived on a week night at 6:30 pm. We were seated at 8:15. Most of the seating is at long communal tables, where diners are crammed, sitting on uncomfortable chairs. If you were going to your family Passover, and you were jammed in at the kids' table, you might accept it. Maybe. But after a nearly 2-hour wait, the food and service better be pretty damn good. But the restaurant's size and accoustics compel the schlumpily-dressed waitstaff to shout to be heard. We ordered mightily. Roast pork, pastrami egg rolls, dried beef, lobster, crispy chicken, duck w/noodles, great deserts. All very good. Very pretty, served promptly. But also expensive. Good value? No. So let's re-cap. 1. Tasty? Yes, very. 2. Presentation? Very good. 3. Ingredients? Very good. 4. Service? Brusque. 5. Atmosphere? Poor. 6. Value? Not good. 7. Intangibles? Hip, happening. THis place is super, super good. Hipster dim sum, done very very well, fun presentations. The place is really small and a cut for the ridiculous no reservation policy- I mean, really? Only a waitlist? What is the rationale for this? Lots of angry people walking out when they tried to get a table...maybe a secret that we called ahead and got our name on a list...total luck but that is the way to do it for sure- keep this in mind! We had: -Lamb dumplings- complex spices, not too gamey -Pac Man dumplings- wow...so, so good. Too bad there is only one of each (each has a different kind of shrimp/combo...shrimp and leek...shrimp and lobster...shrimp and bamboo shoot...shrimp and blue crab- all corresponding colors) -Pastrami egg roll- amazing...but didnt taste different than a normal NYC style egg roll. -Shimp and snow pea leaf dumplings- awesome, but not super different than a normal Har Gow -Pork and crab soup dumplings- WOW - so good, well done with great soup broth inside- larger than the other dumplings with ginger that compliments the taste. -Chinese broccolli and mushroom stir fry- good, but pretty standard -Sauteed black cod with thai basil- perfectly cooked, great flavor -Grilled vegetable salad- shaped like a little garden with some hummus like stuff as the "dirt", strawberries the "fence".
