Some of the techs are great! Others are... Meh? Most mechanics, you get a diagnosis, come back and the same tech works to address the diagnosis. I don't know why BMW doesn't follow industry standard there, but an experienced tech will diagnose, but if you go back for anything (follow up, you didn't have time, etc.) a green tech will get your car without existing knowledge. Maybe it's a way to get a few more hours of labor as the new tech determines what's up. Whenever I've gotten the same tech in particular tho, it's always been fantastic and usually super quick too! This is a review of the service department. Consistently bad service. They don't call you back, don't have your vehicle serviced when promised or expected- a factory recall took two days- BMW app updates and it doesn't always work. Take it to the dealer (the correct thing to do, right) and they don't seem to know how to fix it and blame it on apple (?) They needed to order parts for a defect in my seats.... that was weeks ago. Said it would be about 5 days. I haven't heard from this since. Called on 6/3/26... all they could do is say they'll have someone call me back. Prior experience: spent a day leaving 3 or more messages and no one called me back the entire day. I had heard from other Richmond BMW owners about the terrible service at this dealership. I thought maybe it was a fluke... Not the case. Its poorly run, poorly managed, no customer service at all. I got better service in 1982 at a Chevrolet dealership on my Monte Carlo... it's literally that bad here. And there are loads of service writers there and not one of them ever gives a smile. They look miserable. Their shuttle driver took me from the dealership to work one time, and he talked about politics the entire ride, which is not only unprofessional, but he was also downright stupid and extremely stuck up Trumps A... I should have reported it then but i was so sick of it by the time I got to work I just wanted to forget it. Do yourself a favor, go elsewhere if you need service on your BMW and it's still under factory warranty. I'm going to Fairfax BMW next time and hope for better. Glad I didn't buy it from RIC, no telling how bad that experience would have been. The sales experience wasn't perfect at BMW of Alexandria either. My wife's car is a 2024 Mercedes.... So I made an online appointment last week to have several things looked at and fixed. "Va" was my service writer who took the time to listen to my concerns and to my story. The quick is, I was left the car by my dad. It's not a car that I would've bought on my own and I'm not fully sure I'll be able to keep it due to the costs involved. Va and his team were able to handle the things that needed to be done and got me back on the road. Josh was there to close things out on Saturday and handled my account with utmost professionalism all while handling a multitude of other customers. I am facing a very bad experience with Auto West service for my 2012 BMW. The team is not at all proactive in updating the status to customers and second, they are not good at technically identifying issues in the car. They might be good in normal regular service, but if your car is having a technical issue, they just try options rather than diagnosing the right issue of the car. Every time you get a call they say the different problem and ask for different charges to fix the issue. Till now after 3 weeks, still they are saying my car might be fixed by changing some parts but not sure yet. They discuss directly with BMW and they go by their advice (mostly just over the phone). My question is when you have a technical expert why it is not possible to identify the exact problem and give me the cost to fix the issue? As of now, they said the first part is having a problem and they charged to replace the part, and still the problem is not resolved now they are asking we need to replace DME to fix and I need to pay for that part too. My car was running fine, it all started when I visited them to address 2 recalls on my car. Post recall done, 2nd day my car broke down and they started stating the problem is nothing to do with the recall. If that is the case, why does it break post recalls? They did a software update as part of the recall, but now DME went bad (as per the latest update), if so the software update is nothing to do with DME. How do you say recall not created a DME issue? When you ask for the service manager to escalate or talk, you get only access to Asst Manager after several requests not to the if Manager. Till now I am just getting calls to say we fixed one part but have not resolved the issue, hence we need to replace the other part and I need to pay extra to fix the issue. Not a call from the service executive on the status and also no response to my calls requesting the update. My experience so far is, that if your car has any technical issues, avoid going to Auto West or being ready to keep your car for weeks and they keep increasing your bill by just replacing parts to increase the bill even if it is not required. My "Check Engine" light came on my BMW X1 so I called BMW Richmond and they said they need to see it because it could be serious and it could not. I took it in on a Monday. Thomas the Service Advisor said they only have 2 technicians so it could be days. I said, Ok, because it was Monday and they should know sometime during the week to do a diagnostic. On Wednesday I called to see if they at least did a diagnostic and Thomas said it was in and with only 2 techs they only had 1 diagnostic laptop and the 2 techs were going back and forth using it. I called back on Thursday and Thomas said they never did a diagnostic on my car and he said he told me they could not get to my car for weeks. I told him that is not true, he told me days and if it was weeks I would have gone elsewhere. I also found he lied about the technicians having only 1 diagnostic laptop. Every tech has a diagnostic laptop. I told Thomas on Thursday I will pick my car up Saturday repaired or not and bring it elsewhere. He called on Friday to say it was repaired. I purchased my 14CP M5 about a month ago from Carmax. I got the full CNA warranty with it and have a strong piece of mind with regards to maintenence issues if they should occur. I took the car to my local BMW dealer (Richmond BMW on Broad St in Va) for a PPI and they said the car was solid save for a battery and the tire repair kit. So, Carmax took care of the cost of the new battery and installation and while I had the car at BMW I brought up a few other issues I had noticed. The B pillar trim on the exterior of the drivers door had a chip/delamination. The wheels (satin black 20") had some fading and odd coloration, the drivers door lock was not functioning as expected, the cup holder had a bad trim piece. The technician came out and spoke to me a length and explained that they would replace the cup holder, fix the lock and that he would advocate for new wheels and that they would also try to fix the trim piece. Get the call today and my SA informs me that they are replacing the wheels, putting on new tires, aligning it (I'm purchasing new tires for it) ((They actually got my body weight so they could properly align the car by placing my equivalent weight int he drivers seat in sandbags))fixing the door lock, cup holder, replacing the door trim piece, putting in a new higher amp hr battery and the harness for it, replacing the engine cover for some reason and everything else they can find that needs attention. They also re-coded my cameras, updated all vehicle software to the latest versions and made sure that everything that the warranty would cover is handled. The repairs and replacements should come in around $7-8K minus the tires (1600) so a lot of work is going into my car and it will come out of the dealer like a brand new car! Here's the kicker and why I am so happy with the team at Richmond BMW. The factory warranty expires on 3/30/18. They could have drawn things out and told me I was out of luck but they went the extra mile to ensure that I would receive the very best of care and come away satisfied. I recently spent more than $600 at this dealership for new tires and after driving to Georgia with my car pulling to the right the entire way, I went to Gwinnett Place BMW to have my alignment done/checked. Gwinnett Place BMW service manager called this dealership and BMW Richmond told them I would have to drive back (over 400 miles) so they could look at it. The service manager at Gwinnett BMW was appalled at what this dealership told him. Gwinnett BMW said they couldn't let me drive back to Richmond with a car out of alignment; so they did it free of charge for me. In spite of what the service director Mark Dobinson said, the alignment was never done (or done properly) on the new tires installed! The fact that Gwinnett Place BMW stepped up for shoddy work BMW of Richmond did says a lot of this dealership. If there were "-" stars I'd rate this place a -10. I will take my business to BMW Midlothian. Finally.... I did the survey and rated this place a 1 with detailed comments; not to my surprise that no one has reached out to me about my horrible experience. I use Yelp a lot to find good places to go, but this is my first review. I'm doing it to help others stay away from this place. BMW Richmond Service was wonderful for years. Recently, they have had a lot of staff changes, and I think the service manager is training people to lie to customers. The past few times I've been in, they told me that they were giving me discounts, but the invoices never reflected the discounts they quoted and they run around never added up. On 8/28/20 I got my windshield replaced. Paul told me there would be no problem giving me my BMW CCA discount (car club). When I picked up the car, he told me the discount was already factored into the estimate I signed before they did the work. I was sure that that wasn't true, so I asked for a print out of the retail OEM prices. He flipped out. He was storming around, raising his voice, and very rude. He then gave me a print out of the "original prices". I called and asked the parts guy for the price for the parts, and he told me the first price that was on the estimate I signed. That means that Paul intentionally lied when he told me the estimate included a discount. Not only that, but he created a bogus invoice to make it look like he was telling the truth. The reason I think this is important for everyone (whether you get a discount or not), is because it shows that they are intentionally lying. That makes me wonder what other things they have lied to me about. I have multiple BMWs, and have taken them to Richmond BMW for many years. I'm very sorry to say, I won't be back. The Service Department at this location is Deceitful and dishonest. I took my car in for a promotional oil change on Friday 6/21. After waiting at the Dealership for 1 hour and 30 mins I was told my car was ready. I paid for my oil change which included a fee for disposal of your old oil and left the dealership.. Immediately after I got home I decided to check my oil to make sure that in fact my oil was really changed.. ( Which is sad because you would think the dealership of all places are HONEST! RIGHT?.. WRONG!!!)) I've had problems with this dealership not performing the work requested before and yet still taking the money for the service.. This time was no different.. My oil change was never done. My car had the same dirty oil as it did when I took it in. I immediately called to speak to the Service Manager Mark Dobinson thinking that he would right the wrong done by his service department.. Look, as far as customer service goes and good people. I like this dealership a lot, I have spoke with service directors, techs, parts people and always have been treated right. So to summarize their customer service/support. It's great, and if I was an ignorant car owner, I'd love to take my car here. I realize not everyone is mechanically savvy, but I would recommend doing the research on pricing before you let any dealership do the work on your car. Now, here's the truth with dealerships (all, not just BMW) and my biggest complaint with them- their price for parts and mark-up on service is RIDICULOUS. Seriously a secondary airflow pump that i can replace myself in probably 30 mins, that i can buy online for $317, they want to charge $513 for and then another $100 for installing it? maybe if you have no car knowledge and have money flowing like rap stars, you can justify spending this 300+ markup on a part. I wanted to take a minute and leave a quick review of my recent experience at Richmond BMW. I have purchased at least a dozen BMW's throughout the years, from multiple dealerships, and we have always has great success with our vehicles. Recently, I left to head to work, and I had a check engine sensor light come on, recommending a coolant issue. I called and spoke with my Service Advisor, Tim Peterson, who told me to come over right away so they could check it for me. I immediately drove the car to the service department, and was met by Tim. Mind you, I did not have an appointment, and Tim was able to get my car back to a technician, where they were able to evaluate my car quickly. Tim came out to the waiting area, and told me what the issue was, what part was needed, and kept me updated as the part was located at the sister BMW location. They were able to get the part delivered, repair my vehicle a short time later, and I was back on the road and back to my office in no time. They did a courtesy check of the rest of my car, and assured me there were no other issues before I left the dealership. Everyone was professional, responsive, and genuinely cared about my time and in doing the job quickly and correctly. I could not have been more satisfied, and will continue to recommend Richmond BMW, and more so, Tim Peterson, for the utmost of professionalism he has always presented. Their Service Department is full of VERY BAD LIARS. I was told it would 2 hours of labor to remove my bumper and replace my turn signal assemblies. When I questioned my bumper being unaligned after the repair I was told they didn't have to take the bumper to change the turn signal housing. Then instead of just admitting the truth, lied and tried to make up some BS about it still taking the same amount of time like I'm a F'ing moron. To make matters worse, my headlight when out when they had the car and were unwilling to take responsibility. I will NEVER take my car back to them. I haven't purchased a car here, but frequently use their service department. They are incredibly customer-oriented and their service advisors go out of their way to help you out. On the rare occasion they haven't addressed all of the problems with my car on the initial visit, they make it right ASAP. They provide loaners with enough advanced notice. My actual rating would be in the negative stars if that were possible. I have been a BMW owner for 5 years. During that time I have been completely and totally ripped off by Crown BMW Richmond. They regularly overcharge for services, and those services may or may not have even been performed. My last interaction with Crown was for an oil leak. I brought the car in to the shop at 7:30AM on a Wednesday. I was told that it would take a couple of days to get the work done. After an estimate of $3400 I was told that the car would be ready by Friday that same week. On Friday I got a call that it was going to be Monday or maybe Tuesday. On Wednesday the second week I was told that they had fixed the car, but that it failed the test drive, and that they would have to wait for a "special tool" to actually get the job done. Also that they had overestimated the cost and now it would only be $2500 ( overestimated by only $900). The good news was that they now had a loaner car for me and that they would deliver it to my home. They delivered it all right. It was nice, and it had an empty gas tank. Gee Thanks To sum up, I got my car back after a 16 day wait and after driving it for 2 days the oil warning light came back on. They had fixed nothing. It would appear that they poured some fresh oil in and sent me on my way. They once charged me $14 to pull the seat belts in the back seat out from being tucked under the seat so that it would pass inspection. My last trip they replaced a tail light bulb... not the light assembly, but A BULB. They charged me $92 for parts and labor. Does BMW blow the glass for the bulbs themselves? This is typical of the treatment from their service department. Their only concern seems to be, not me, the condition of my car, or the quality of the "service" that they offer. It is the condition, content, and availability of my wallet. Their "service representatives" are unconcerned, condescending, and patronizing. And that's on a good day. The general policy seems to be that once that car is paid off, they needn't even offer you a loaner car. I've been lied to outright almost every time I have been in for service. I once asked one of the reps if they could check the calibration of my speedometer because the onboard nav system registered my speed 5 to 7 MPH slower than my speedometer. His answer would be funny if it weren't so outrageously stupid. He said that BMW did that on purpose to keep people from speeding. Son, I was born in the country, but it didn't happen YESTERDAY. I have solved the problem of doing business of any kind with Crown BMW. After the last service debacle I traded in my BMW for a Volkswagon and I've kissed the criminals at Crown goodbye for the last time. If you find yourself even tempted to deal with these people, Give yourself a good hard SLAP and DRIVE ON. read more

Just purchased a 2018 BMW with 6k mile. I just went in Richmond BMW to get the oil light reset, because I purchased it from a Lexus dealer who wasn't sure how to reset the light. This is my 3rd BMW and normally I deal with Tim Peterson ( a great guy! ) who was off for the holiday weekend. Mind you I drive clear across town to come here because Tim has always been so nice and helpful. BUT THIS TIME I get the DISHONEST service advisor ( I didn't catch his "tainted" name but he sat next to the lady advisor on Aug 31, 2019 at exactly 8 am.) He scans my key and tells me I also need a RADIATOR FLUSH. I decline and my spirit tells me to go get my key back and leave so that's just what I do without waiting to get the light reset. I go to the BMW dealership closer to my home and receive a COMPLETELY different customer experience from Richmond. It was GREAT customer service and when my key was scanned NOTHING was needed...absolutely NOTHING!!. Later I called a friend to vent about the experience and he that said you usually don't need a radiator flush for about 3 or 4 years and he has 38k miles and has not required one yet. So to that advisor I'm sorry I didn't get your name because I need to Know who to pray for. But please get your soul right, your good name and reputation is all you have in this world. I think they want to do the right thing. I do. I think they want to but I'm not sure they are capable at this time. And I"m not sure why. I moved to Richmond last year from N.Va where I received excellent service from BMW Fairfax. After a 3 year relationship with them I was hoping to build one with Richmond BMW. Sadly, RIchmond BMW and I are not going to make it as a couple. I went in because my check engine light was on and i needed an oil change. After 3 visits to the shop, I left with the check engine light still on but I did get an oil change. However, when I left I was given a list of other issues with no explanation!!! That's cool, they were busy...I get it. But after I got home, I read the details and saw that they wrote that my 2 rear tires were too dangerous to drive on because the chord was exposed! No heads-up or hey you might want to get this done because it is too hazardous to drive on (while i was actually there). As I explained to them, I would have replaced the tires when I was doing the oil change. So I go back and get that done. As I'm driving back home on 7-3-19, I hear a rustling under my car and noticed that the engine shield was dragging. With the holiday coming up, I contact the service rep and advise that I'm bringing it back in on 7-5-19. When I get there today he questioned why I didn't turn back around immediately and bring it back. Honestly, that's a good question. I informed him that I had a podcast to do (trust that I will discuss these experiences in greater detail on my podcast, reviews on other sites and a contact to their corporate offices) and had more time on Friday. However, he implied that I had done the damage myself and couldn't imagine that his technician didn't secure the engine shield back after the work was done. That being said, they did secure the engine shield back-which is all I wanted. So would I recommend them to a friend? No, absolutely not. Is it the worst dealership as some other reviewers have mentioned? No. I've dealt with worst but I expected better from a BMW dealership. And the employees are genuinely nice. Would I recommend you go somewhere else. Yes. I think they are trying to do the right thing but they don't seem capable at this point and time. I can't see building a relationship with them and that is what you want with someone who is servicing your vehicle. p.s. From a service perspective, the staff is lovely. Tim and Paul are extremely personable and very helpful. As of now they have only worked on the F80 M3, I may let them have a go at my E39 M5. We miss our BMW Dealership in Illinois (Fields) as they were the benchmark. I was a little upset that they dont have a cafe in this facility but not a huge deal. Overall, the facility is comfortable and the staff pleasant. I do find it cute how they add all of the BMW fluff to all their customers (people amuse me) I would recommend them for all of your service needs so far. read more

Just...the worst. a low-rent BMW dealership (a contradiction?). They do NOT care how long you've been giving them business when it comes to nickels and dimes. They have a policy that if your car is older than 5 years they will not provide a loaner when you bring it in for service. (keep in mind, you are paying THEIR absorbinant repair prices and they could care less if you bought the vehicle from THEIR dealership...no loaners if 2012 or later). Great car, not so great service. After paying for the car we learned that the original floor mats could not be found and we were given rubber mats. When we took it for a service (the thermostat went bad at 11,000 miles) they didn't call when ready. When we called they said it was done the previous day. Then they lost the keys and took more than an hour to find them while we waited. I hope they improve because the alternative dealer is a long distance from us. This review is for the service I received from Steve Lerner for a 335d CPO. I drove from Northern VA for a car that I've never seen before nor have I driven yet with every intention to buy it. From the initial inquiry to the final sale, Steve was very patient with me and addressed all my questions. After the sale, in a rush to go home, he insisted I take a few moments with him to learn about the car. He was smart enough to give me the important information and read me well enough to get me on my way before I became impatient. Months after the purchase, I had a couple questions about the car and he was very prompt to respond to my calls and e-mails. And also very recently, as I was preparing to sell the car, I reached out to Steve to see if he could help me get some info on the car. Within the day, he e-mailed and called me on both my numbers. Awesome, A+ service and really a pleasure to work with. Now I probably saw the BMW service department in Northern VA more than I saw my parents so I had to trade her in. Once I retire and have nothing better to do than hang out in the service lounge at the BMW dealership, I would definitely see Steve to buy that car. read more

Hmm, well I also see there's a Crown Mini on Yelp now...but thought I'd update here. I didn't notice right away that when they replaced the tires in July they also replaced the nice metal valve stem caps (that I bought with the car at Crown) with cheap plastic ones. Needed warranty service done and a wheel alignment on my 2006 X5 on Sept, 1, 2015. Since I had to work in Richmond all week, I made an appointment to get it done. Short story, wheel alignment could not be done because of worn parts. They gave me a list and I decided to do the work myself which I did. In addition to the warranty airbag work, they mentioned that the side bag sensor need to be replaced not under warranty.($400+). Another dealer took car of the warranty airbag issue and did not mention a problem with the side airbag. This review is for the bmw service department only. If you do have to go there, ask for Tim Peterson as your service advisor. The rest are clowns. They have managed to scrape my bumper, logged 10 extra miles on the car that was not documented (ie I got the car back with 10 extra miles not accounted for in their paperwork) and left bolts off the valve cover after finishing the work. Complete incompetence and a lack of care. Do not take your car there, but if you do, ask for Tim and check it over completely when you get it back... read more

Brought my leased 128i in for some routine maintenance. The staff was very polite and showed me over to the waiting area while they started on my car. The waiting area has a TV, some couches, chairs and standing tables for relaxing or working. Free wi-fi too. The service was estimated at two hours but took closer to three which was a little disappointing. However they also replaced a busted light in my trunk free of charge, so I can't complain too much! My fiancee has owned various BMWs for the past five years, so he has visited this location quite frequently for his service needs.
