If you're just driving by and look for Riobamba then 1) you'll have a hard time finding it and 2) you won't imagine how good it will be since it's in a strip center. Being from San Antonio, I pride myself in knowing good latin cuisine. Sure, South Texas has Tex-Mex (think cheesy and flour tortillas), but there is also a wide variety of true Mexican food as well as a few places that offer other Latin-style flavors. Robamba is honestly among the best latin food I've ever had. It's not Mexican food, so don't expect that. It is similar though. Very "clean" ingredients with few menu items containing gluten or dairy. That's a plus for us since my wife is gluten and dairy sensitive. When i arrived with the food the aroma could be smelled throughout the whole building. I couldn't even begin to tell you how amazing the food was, there was silence as we all just enjoyed. Really interesting and varied menu! I tried a shrimp taco and a fish taco and enjoyed both. We also got beans and rice. The beans were good. I would probably not get the rice again because I think it may have been minute rice dressed up with broth and vegetables. The texture seemed quite firm. I also tried a llapingacho, which had a very surprising combination of ingredients, but was quite delicious. Aside from the rice, I would order any of the items that I tasted today again. This is one of those places that you just want to succeed. My coworker and I were greeted by a warm smile upon walking in. You order at the counter upon entering and they will bring the food to you. I had the beef skewers and although they were a bit dry, they were well-seasoned and very tasty. It just went perfectly with the rice. I doused the meat with their signature sauces (they have 4 different ones at each table) and they definitely added pizzazz to the dish. The rice was also flavorful. I learned about heavenly things like potato cakes with fried egg and peanut sauce (try it, it will blow your mind), sweet plantains with cheese (who knew you can make them even better with cheese), and yucca fries with the most amazing chimichurri sauce I've ever had. Great addition to the north suburbs. My favorites were the shrimp and fish tacos. The steak was good too but they really know how to make a seafood taco! We also had the yuca fries which came out hot, crunchy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. Perfecto! The portion was smaller than I would've liked though. You get 3 sauces (see pic) to also add to your food. Overall service was friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. My only qualm is that it took sit down restaurant time for our food to come out and I wish the portion of the yuca fries was larger. I went here Saturday night with my wife and 2 year old son. You order at the counter, and then the staff brings the food out to the table. The menus are on two big flat screen TV's behind the counter, and when I started reading what was offered, and seeing how reasonable the prices were, I wanted to try everything! Potato Cakes with a Fried Egg and Peanut Sauce - I ordered these because I had never heard of such a combination... they were delicious! Hardly like a traditional potato pancake - these are much softer - more like mashed potatoes with an outer crust. Yucca Fries - These are sized like steak fries and went perfectly with the chimichurri dipping sauce Maduros - soft plaintains with white cheese over them? I was skeptical of such a combination, but the guy behind the counter assured me that they were good. He was right! Sweet, but not sugary. Chips with Chorizo/Cheese - wholesome and savory without being greasy like some queso fundidos tend to be. Shrimp and Chorizo - this was the star of the show. I would liken it to a version of fajitas without the tortilla. It is served with sauteed peppers over hominy, and I have never had hominy that tasted so interesting due to the flavor of the chorizo and the peppers. Steak Taco - my 2 year old loved it. Piled high with meat, so I got to eat some too! Rice - it was a nice side dish, but I was blown away by the hominy in the Shrimp and Chorizo dish and getting full so I didn't spend too much time on it. My 2 year old ate most of it though! Make sure you ask for some of the available hot sauces! None of the food really needs it, but the spice made for some nice variations on some of these items. We stumbled across this place at 7:30 on a Saturday night (they close at 8:00). We tried the potato cake topped with a fried egg that came with a creamy peanut sauce. Yeah, sounds crazy but the owner says it's a common Ecuadorian dish. It was excellent. Chicken tamale also very good. We also tried the in house made chorizo taco ( spicy but good) the shredded pork taco which is what they are known for but I thought was a little on the dry side. This place brings a mixture of the traditional style tacos as well as some more unique options. While their pricing is very similar to some of the other suburban taco shops, they excel in portions. Let's be real - Riobamba gives you your money's worth. Their tacos are practically overflowing, and there's no sacrifice in quality. Moving past the tacos, their Yuca fries are fantastic. Perfectly crispy and paired with a very tasty chimichurri aioli. Their maduros were not my favorite, but I've heard good things about the tostones which come with the same chimichurri aioli as the Yuca fries. The first time I went to this restaurant it was wonderful. I brought friends on Monday night and, of course, it was a disappointment. It took a long time to get our food and when we did, it was cold. Must have sat around for a while. We had the pulled pork with hominy, beef and pork tacos and veggie sandwich. I am sure the food would have tasted as I expected if it were hot. I like that we can byo. Sauces are homemade and very tasty. They also have interesting options for plain old salt and pepper. I picked up food from there a few months ago and we were very disappointed! It has five stars so I thought the tacos would be great! I had the steak and pork tacos and my wife had the steak and chicken tacos and we both agreed that they very boring and bland. The guacamole was very good and that helped with the bland tacos but they were just so tasteless and boring. There are so many better taco places in the area.. So maybe tacos aren't there thing because the friends we went with had the skirt steak and the 1/2 chicken and they said it was fantastic. It was good to see gluten free options but not worth trying again Now the other reason why I'm giving them such a low rating is that I was majorly sick after eating there. everyone else I ate with was fine which tells me that there probably a cross contamination that took place (I'm gluten free). I had the pork taco and Chorizo taco, most taco places, 2 tacos would leave me wanting more, I could barely finish these, they're large and FULL OF MEAT! We also tried a chicken tamale. There have been a few taco places popping up in the last few years, but this place has a lot more (actual entrees and sides etc), and it's significantly less expensive that the others in the area! Excellent! Had two chorizo tacos and the yucca fries. I added the herbed salt and smoky cumin to my fries and I was super pleased. The tacos were the best chorizo tacos I've ever had. I tried each of the salsas and they were all amazing. The citrus habanero (hot) was probably my favorite. I went here for the first time yesterday. I expect to go back frequently. I had the Hornados and a large fountain drink. The meal was large and I couldn't finish it. A very good value. They had three sauces in plastic bottles on the tables. One mild with a smiley flavor. One medium with jalapeños and cilantro which was very tasty, and a hot which featured habaneros. They also had flavored salts to douse on your food as well. These were very good. The hornados was basically pulled pork over hominy. The pork was juicy but the flavor of the meat was just okay. After adding the salt and sauces it was much better. The fountain drinks were not coke or Pepsi products. They had alternative flavors like black cherry tarragon and pineapple cream soda. All were good. I will go back here because I need to try the tacos. read more

Our go-to dishes are their "Green-Go"-style tacos (fish, chicken, steak, or whatever protein they might have special for the day), tamales, avocado salad, and their guacamole and chips.
