First time (and last) dining here. My husband & I, new to the area thought we'd give this nice looking cafe a try. We were disappointed on all levels. Extremely slow service-looked like only one wait staff for the whole cafe. Quality- my $18 crispy chIcken wrap with fries was so bad I didn't finish it. The crispy chicken tasted like oil, the shredded lettuce was pale & flavorless, tortilla wrap was flat & greasy.and the fries were heavy & tasted like oil. My husband had a chicken wrap with a salad & he said the same pale, flavorless lettuce that was on his plate was also stuffed in his wrap, with very little chicken- $18! Our total bill was nearly $50 for a regrettable lunch. read more

I've come here for years and the food is always amazing. The stuffed hash browns are unforgettable and literally the reason we come back. The biscuits and gravy were okay, I prefer more flavorful gravy but I still enjoyed it. I highly recommend this spot for breakfast or brunch! read more

After a long wait from COVID, social distancing, we had a wonderful lunch today. We each had the Ruben sandwich and they were delicious! The bread was grilled to perfection and not full of grease. The pastrami was very tender and the sauerkraut was perfectly portioned. The crowd had thinned out as it was nearing closing time but the ambiance was good. Our server was very polite, well mannered and spoke clearly unlike many places now. We were able to use our "bogo" from the mailing list. We're also glad that there are plates, flatware, etc. This restaurant went to great lengths to keep everyone safe that could venture out during the pandemic and it's appreciated! read more

I haven't been to the Rivers Edge in a while, but it's close and I was hungry. A bad choice. This place use to be a great place to get a quality breakfast with good prices and great service. Now it's cafeteria style. I ordered pancakes and eggs, anywhere else I'd get some style of potatoes and bacon or sausage, and maybe a fruit. Nope. Just the pancakes that were overdone and sausage with my eggs. For the price I was expecting a lot more. I could add more but I'll leave it as bad, bad, bad. Price, service, food. I had breakfast here not too long ago. The place was mostly empty, freezing cold inside, and service was very slow. Cook in back had really loud phlegmy cough. What was once a fantastic breakfast spot is now reduced to what amounts to a fast food joint. I wouldn't be surprised if they go to ordering kiosks. You order at the counter and they bring the food to the table you pick. The food wasn't the same quality it used to be... and now it's on PAPER PLATES. You don't even get actual silverware. You get pre-packaged plastic-ware with napkin and S&P included. It felt like I was in a grade school cafeteria! Honestly, you'll get a better breakfast if you just go to McDonalds! I "opened up" this amazing restaurant today, as it was the first time they've been open in over two months, thanks to the current COVID-19 scare. It was GREAT to enjoy good food, and to chit-chat with the friendly owners. Prior to the current virus scare, Rivers Edge Cafe was a full service, sit-town restaurant, but is now is required to operate on what I call the "taqueria" format. The way this works is you walk to the order counter, make your selection, pay for your order, and then you're rewarded with a number. You seat yourself, but you're required to "social distance" yourself from other guests, and when your order is ready, it will be brought to you. The "format" is not what it used to be, but it works in these troubled times. All staff members are required to wear masks, and those who have contact with food are required to wear disposable gloves. Guests aren't required to wear masks, thank goodness. When it comes to the menu, you can look, but you can't touch, as printed menus at your table are a "no-no" on this day in late May, 2020. Rivers Edge Cafe re-opened today, but operates on significantly reduced hours, with less staff. The bright side is that everything listed on the menu is available anytime the restaurant is open. So if you're in the mood for a burger at 9 in the morning... you're good! From the "Gourmet Burgers" section of the lunch menu, I went with "Hornet," with I assume is named after the mascot of nearby Sacramento State College, which just happens to be a hornet. The menu states the burger includes, "Bacon, Cheddar, eggs, jalapiños, grilled onions, tomatoes, lettuce and Thousand Island." Choice of sides includes fries, coleslaw or salad. For a nominal extra fee, you can add seasoned fries or sweet potato fries. As always, I went with a simple order of fries, and I'm glad that I went in that direction. When you place your order, the meeter/greeter/cashier asks your preference as to how you want your meat patty cooked - which is always a nice touch - and I asked my burger to be cooked medium. The burger starts with a large patty of seasoned beef - I'd guess about six ounces- and arrived, as ordered, cooked perfectly medium. The juicy patty of beef is placed on top of a large, super-fresh bun... maybe brioche? I should have asked... With "Hornet," your burger has a definite "twist," as you get amazingly fresh lettuce, tomato, pickled jalapiño pepper slices, grilled onion, bacon, Cheddar cheese, a fried egg, all topped off by a helping of Thousand Island dressing. Shannon asked if I wanted steak sauce or mustard, but this burger was just fine the way it was presented to me, so I declined her fine offer. Condiments are not offered on the table in Sacramento County, thanks to the COVID-19 thing that is currently happening... My choice of sides was fries, which is my de facto standard, and I was absolutely delighted with my fries, as they were perfectly cooked. I'm "salt sensitive," but a certain amount of salt is necessary for fries, and the side of fries I enjoyed were salted just right. (Note: If desired, more salt is easily added so why salt the fies to death?) The fries were deep fried to a light, golden brown, and were salted just right, and not at all greasy or oily. The fries were large, almost the size of steak fries, they arrived hot from the kitchen, and were absolutely delicious. There was also a spear of dill pickle with the burger, hidden behind the generous mountain of fries. This is an "old school" burger, as it's BIG, juicy, loaded with lots of "goodies" and you definitely need two hands to enjoy the goodness. As with the trademark of a superior burger, the meat, cheese, bacon, egg and bun is "warm," and the lettuce, tomato and diced jalapiño peppers are "cool," which makes for a superior burger sensation. The meat-to-bun ration was perfect, and all ingredients complemented one another, which led to an amazing burger "sensation." The cheese was perfectly melted, and you could TASTE it... which made for a burger to rave about. Anyway you look at it, Rivers Edge Cafe makes a great burger, and "Hornet" is a burger that burger lovers will savor! Rivers Edge Cafe serves quality cuisine, in a spacious dining room, and as you're enjoying you're amazing meal, you'll be treated to perhaps the friendliest staff in the greater Sacramento area. So sad to see this place go down hill. First let me start with the good. The servers were very limited in number so they had to do things unorthodox which I understand. The staff they did have were friendly and tried hard. The food on the other hand was pretty bad from what I remember. The coffee was mediocre at best. The pancakes had to have been microwaved. They were crunchy on the outside and dry/slightly stale on the inside. Weird for a pancake I know. No one at the table enjoyed the other dishes as well. Maybe they have a different chief since covid? Also felt like all the ingredients were not the best quality. All of this would have been fine if the price point was right. At 25$ a head this was just bad and I would have been better off cooking at home. read more

Well....that was disappointing. For a variety of reasons. Based on the description, I ordered a fried chicken benedict, which is served over the waffle. As a fan of benedicts, this sounded glorious. Sadly, it didn't live up to it. The fried chicken was the best part. It still remained crispy and juicy, so yay for that. The hollandaise sauce was sparse, and literally had no flavor. None! What's the point? The eggs were poached way too long, and were more hard boiled texture. Cutting through the eggs is one of the joys of benedicts, and I was deprived of that. The final kicker was, that for such a "quaint" cafe, they charge $3.50 (plus tax) for a soda. At this point, not in the mood to recommend based on an item listed under "favorites." read more

Nice little neighborhood cafe and bar. Great breakfast selection, good service, great food and large servings.

We have come here a couple of times now and we love this place! Our puppy Lucie is welcome to sit with us here at the outdoor patio. The servers are all college kids and dress in college themed clothing. I love the fact that so far all of the staff has been smiling and super friendly no matter how busy the place is. We have ordered a few of the breakfast items here including the following: stuffed hash browns, pancakes, and the chicken fried rib eye steak. The only item we really didn't care for was the chicken fried rib eye steak which was too dry. Prices are a little on the high side but the huge portions of food make up the difference. Our next visit we plan on sampling their burgers as they look outrageously mouth watering whenever we see one served! Great service, good food and dog friendly this place is a hit :) read more

This place is a little far away for me, I wish I could swing by here more often. We were seated right away in a very busy Memorial Day. YAY! But then as I was moving the condiment tray, there was a used paper napkin ring. I thought to myself "RUN" When placing our order, I was told they no longer have a espresso machine thus no mocha...no problem, I got a coffee. When the coffee arrived, adding auger was a task due to the fans blowing the sugar all over. My Fair Oaks Eggs Benedict were perfect, egg was perfectly poached. With the addition of grilled onions and Italian sausage on top of the ham, it was a great creation. My grandson had a basic pancakes, eggs, and bacon with apple juice to was it down. Yup, I had to try it! Eggs and bacon, yup that's what they were. The pancakes are excellent! OMG! I could eat those everyday! But why 5 stars for breakfast? The service, our server (Steph S) did such a great job. Extremely polite and professional. Always kept my coffee full and always checking in with us. The first time I had eaten here was during a UYE arranged by Joe K. It was a small gathering but we had a very nice time and really enjoyed the service and food. But my most recent visit was when we recommended to my dad, sister and brother-in-law to give them a try for themselves. My dad said that he tried the food once when they first opened and wasn't impressed enough to return. I urged him to give it another chance. Dad was treating us all, so I had hoped that the prices wouldn't be too discouraging. It was expectedly busy due to the breakfast rush, but we were able to get a table to fit our party of five. The lady who showed us our seats took our drink orders, in which four of us wanted coffee. Joe K. requested that his coffee be half decafe in order to cut back on his caffeine intake. I guess communication got lost in the translation, and another server thought we all wanted decafe. This wasn't a big deal as we finally got regular coffees as ordered. As we looked at the menu, I was happy to point out that there was a senior's menu on one of the pages. It turns out, that ALL of us are now (cough, cough) senior citizens! Fortunately, the prices were a little less, so that we didn't feel guilty about my dad having to pay as much. The senior menu was disappointingly limited (only five breakfast items) and they didn't allow substitutions on the items we asked about. Joe K. has to keep his salt intake to a minimum; I prefer eating vegetarian, while my sister can't have gluten. Eventually we made our choices even though it wasn't the choices we had hoped for initially. I was hoping for a cheese omelet, but the omelet offered had meat in it. So I got the Veggie Potato Dish with my side choice of pancakes that were included for $7.95. Dad and my brother-in law got Senior Breakfast Combos for $8.95. Joe K. ordered an omelet and my sister got Crème Brulee with season fresh fruit. We also ordered a Wild Alaskan Salmon dinner for my mother that was to go. When breakfast was served, everything looked delicious! We all enjoyed the food. My sister said her Crème Brulee was excellent, but it was a small serving. The "seasonal fruit" turned out to be one measly strawberry placed on the plate like a garnish (or an after thought). We asked one of the servers if this was supposed to be all the fruit you get. She asked someone in the kitchen and returned stating that it was indeed all you get! Well, you can imagine that this soon turned out to be a source of jokes for the rest of the day! Anyway, I have to say I still like River's Edge Café. I like their convenient location, their food, and they even have a bar where alcohol is served. There are 5 flat screen TV's placed around the dining room, and you can also sit outside in the patio area even though the view of a strip mall parking lot has its reservations. In truth, they are quite near the American River, but not close enough to take advantage of its beauty. Finally, my mom loved her salmon dinner, and she is very picky about her food. I usually don't go to a restaurant without a stellar rating, personal preference. Due to where I had been working, I figured I would give it a try. The Rivers Edge Cafe is conveniently located near Watt Ave and US 50. There is ample parking in the shopping center lot. Inside the restaurant is spacious, lots of table and booth seating, a bar area. There are tables outdoors in a fenced patio. The menu is large and there are some really creative fall selections including pumpkin pancakes, stuffed hash browns, steak and eggs, and a variety of traditional egg plates, pancakes and omelettes. I ordered bacon, eggs, hash browns and toast. The fried eggs were over cooked, cooked hard; I'd ordered over medium, no runny whites. The bacon was EXCELLENT, 4 pieces of the best, thickest, most flavorful bacon I've ever eaten. The hash browns were cold. The sour dough bread/toast was flavorful tasted good but could have been toasted more. The butter for the toast was real butter, a plus. I had a diet Coke for my drink. The customer service by all the female wait staff was cordial, how can I help you. My drink was served immediately, my order was taken and served in a timely manner, and I was asked how things were and if I needed anything else. The girl who rang up my order, had little people skills. Specifically, she didn't ask how my meal was or thank me for coming in. She had almost zero people's skills, not a good representative of the restaurant. The meal cost was $18.80, very high. I had no special requests, add on's, extras. I looked at the bill and I was charged $3.50 for a Diet Coke in a glass maybe 8-10 ounces in size. read more

No biscuits and gravy. I settled for the classic burger. With Swiss cheese. I was parched. Thirsty. In desperate need of beverage. Iced tea with lemon and H2o were ordered. I immediately finished them both before ordering the meal. Wait staff took my order and did not even offer to refill my beverages. It wasn't even busy. Tables were being cleared. Staff walked by several times. No beverage refills. Staff sat at the bar and snacked and chatted. I sat and waited quite a while before refills were made. They were finally filled AFTER my burger was delivered. The atmosphere was hip and very well lit with natural light through many big windows. It was pretty quiet with music playing softly. The patio was large but not shaded. A couple of tables had umbrellas. Burger was supposed to be cooked to medium. It was well done. The bun was toasted. French fries were crispy and hot. There were three different hot sauces available at the table. That was nice. My beverages were finished again and never refilled a third time. I waited a long time, with empty plate in fron of me, before the check arrived. Overall I was not impressed in the slightest. I am open to exploring local businesses instead of chain restaurants. Staff seemed distracted and were very inattentive. While glad I tried this option I will not return. I recommend trying it once. Hopefully to a better experience. Rivers Edge Cafe is a gem! It's operating with about 5 tables outside for "dining in" and still open for takeout. I was especially pleased to see they are still serving Bloody Mary's for brunch! And they are awesome especially if you ask for spicy. The fam chowed on chicken and biscuits, a club sandwich and a "hang over" with stuffed hash browns. I was super happy to sit outside cuz it allowed me to bring my dog. Service was awesome. Order inside and they bring it to you. Very fast and piping hot. We waited outside for 20 minutes for a table a skipped out after we saw the following: Servers with their masks off while talking in close contact with customers Tables being wiped off with water between customers, but not disinfected No corrections made to customers who were not paying attention to the markers on the floor- they walked right up to strangers and talked in their faces without masks, repeatedly, and the staff said/did nothing It's a dicey time to eat out, but I'm not comfortable doing so at a place that's not even trying to keep themselves or their customers safe. read more

Ive been here several times pre-pandemic and it was enjoyable. Just recently visited on Saturday and expected the usual wait but it was crickets at 10:00am. I dont mind the order at the counter business model. No problem there, in fact in some cases, I think that it is preferred, especially if you are looking to cut labor costs. The issue that I have is the pricing for what you get. After looking back at prior menus, I noticed that the menu items had increased a not-so-insignificant amount. Again, not a huge issue if the food and service are good but to have them served to us on paper plates with plastic utensils just severely reduced the perceived value of what I was paying for. Three entrees and two soft drinks came out to $70 pre-tip. For that pricing, I would at least expect my meal to be on an actual plate with silverware. Again, price is not really an issue for good food/service but to be served mediocre food on paper plates with plastic utensils made it feel like we were eating at a Chipotle but with Selland's prices. Not really worth it, in my opinion so I will likely not be back. read more

Rude service and less than mediocre food. 9AM on a Saturday morning I don't expect the fastest service ever but the place was not incredibly busy. One large party but many open tables still. About 20 minutes after we ordered we asked the server if she knew how much longer it would be. Instead of saying "I'm sorry we had a big party order just ahead of you" or some other explanation with apology, she essentially scolded us for even asking, "well that's what happens when you come in after a big party" then our food came moments later with "toast" that was honestly not browned at all. When I asked again for toast, our server asked incredulously if I wanted it browned more? I GET being busy. I GET big parties can be hard especially during a breakfast shift. What I don't get is rude servers treating diners like they are a huge inconvenience. read more

Great breakfast and lunch spot located off Watt on La Riviera in a quiet shopping center. It's a good destination spot for cyclists wanting places within easy access of the bike trail. I like riding for an hour or so along the river, then having someplace like this to stop at before riding back to the trail. I'm told that with the new ownership, they're now open for dinners on Fridays and Saturdays. Lots of breakfast and lunch specials, here. So many that it was hard to narrow down the choices to one. I settled on the waffle sandwich: two thin waffles with eggs, onions, and sausage in between as a filling. Even for someone with a big appetite, this was a lot of food! The spicing was a bit tame, but that was fixed by a liberal application of a very good hot sauce from the Gilroy area. (see photo.) My cousin ordered the California Benedict and a side of eggs. She also added the Red Velvet pancakes for us. We ordered way too much for the two of us. The stuffed hash browns are yummy! This place serves hair with food. Ordered hashbrowns and they gave me a side of hair. Not only do you get hair with your food the service lacks common manners. When I was saying thank you for taking the order, the chick say "yeah" and hung up.
