I went here for the first time with some friends, and the service and food were awesome! My friend works at the salon a few doors down, so we had a very friendly greeting as soon as we walked in. Fred is the best! Everything I tasted from my friends' meals were delicious including the 49er roll, chicken teriyaki, chicken yaki soba, and the mahi mahi (which was my entree.) The mahi mahi was very tender and delicious! The portion size was good too, although I stuffed myself a little too much. After our meal, we weren't going to order dessert but when my friend said the coconut tapioca sounded good, Fred then brought us 2 tapiocas and a green tea tiramisu. And they were complimentary! Not to mention...he also gave us $50 off our meal. Thanks Fred! (And Edward!) ;) I would definitely come back here, and I recommend it to everyone! read more

Sushi was way overpriced and small nothing special but not horrible neither. The entrees (chicken teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, and the lamb) were pricey but I will say fairly decent, the salmon was well cooked, lamb was cooked perfectly and was very flavorful and the chicken was a decent portion of both sauce and chicken. No real complaints there although the dinner set option is a total rip off at almost $10 for some salad and a miso soup(also miso soup will come with it anyways with rice). Everyone there was very nice excellent quiet atmosphere. The waiter was clearly doing his best trying to help us but was very clearly new and not to sound mean but it was as if he wasn't trained at all: thumb on food as he was serving, didn't know the menu, and kept putting things on top of things as the orders came in almost spilling a bunch of soy sauce everywhere(luckily didn't happen but was veryyyy close! Enough to mention at least) and kept having to ask another server for things and charged us for sauce(not typically an issue but the issue was not mentioning the price nor that we would be charged for it). Ultimately it was a half decent restaurant that could stand to make some basic changes starting with the prices. read more

Mediocre, unfortunately. We came here pretty late on a weekday for dinner. The place is huge! With decor from the 80s, it has an interesting vibe. We kind of started to have a not-so-great feeling about the place after seeing the huge menu as one would start to question the freshness of their items. We ordered quite a few items but the more memorable ones are: - clams miso soup: this was actually the best thing we had here! - grilled asparagus and mushrooms: mediocre - monk fish liver: a huge portion, but it was on the fishy side - hamachi kama: didn't taste very fresh Overall we were underwhelmed by the food and may not go back again. Our favorite Japanese place in Marin remains to be Sushi Ran (duh). read more

My husband and I tried Robata for the first time and thought it was excellent. Delicious soba noodles and huge serving, we struggled to eat it all. The chicken katsu came with rice and salad (large portion) The tempura vegetables were perfect and came with a great sauce. Bonus green tea in our takeaway bag for us too. Hey Everyone, I've been gone for a bit but I'm back and have some great reviews to post especially my trip to Hawaii. I went to Robata last night and had a great meal with friends. You could really taste the difference between good and great sushi and this place was delicious. You could tell how fresh each of the dishes tasted. Your server Tim was awesome and was ably to answer all our questions and recommend some tasty dishes. I would tell any sushi buff to give them a try. Cool atmosphere and easy parking. The dinner they offer for $25 is a great size and a bit of everything, a friend had that. I had the Marin Sushi and a a miso soup. For dessert we ordered Macha and Coffee Mochi, it was great but tell them to cut it in 4 pieces each because is hard to cut with the spoon when you share it. Had it been warm, our meal would have been pretty good. Unfortunately, both the website and the confirmation email we received stated clearly that we should not come until we received a text telling us it was ready. We finally just showed up a half hour after it should have been ready. We were told it had been ready for half an hour. I was assured that the food was still hot, which was not actually the case. Lucky for me, I ordered sushi. My husband's poke was tasty and hadn't suffered from the wait. The recipient of the tempura was not so lucky. The beef in the teriyaki was good, and the other parts of the meal could be reheated. The food from Robata seemed generally pretty good and reasonably creative. The prices are pretty steep. Due to the communication issues, I doubt we will go back. Eating there in person might be a better bet, though I will leave that to someone else. read more

I know it's not the best sushi in the world. I know that. Let's move past that. The more I go here, the more I love it. Friendly staff, a large enough dining room that you rarely wait if you need to go last minute. The sushi bar area is awesome... we love to sit there and watch the guys grill. The sushi is fantastic vs the price and other places.... (Sushi Ran doesn't even use sustainable practices so what are you paying for beyond showy-ness?). But it's really the grill, and all the options and combos for delicious, fresh grilled veggies and meat. They are so warm and inviting, and albeit a little institutional, it's a place I doubt I will get tired of. I am still searching for the best sushi in Marin (if you have an opinion, let me know), but this is a simple, fast, delicious, affordable way to have your sushi and eat it to. read more

Three stars because the prices on the menu do not match the quality of the food. Stopped by this place after a Sunday afternoon at Stinson Beach. I had the dinner for 1 special, which included miso soup, wakame and hijiki salad, 4pc Hella roll, 2pc salmon sashimi, 2pc white tuna sashimi, 4pc tempura, and salmon teriyaki with broccoli. Pretty much a huge bento box. Oh and one piece of mochi. Absolutely no substitutions... So I decided to just not eat the tempura. Ok, I had two bites of one shrimp tempura. Overall, it was okay. Sashimi was okay, sushi was okay, salmon teriyaki looked sad. Will check out Sushi Ram next time. read more

The price is very good considering what you're ordering. I got a California roll with snow crab and a side of steamed rice for around 11 dollars. The host was extremely pleasant and helpful. For those interested they do have a medium selection of beers. As for sushi though, they have a fantastic assortment of rolls and other delicacies. It's the perfect mix between quiet and raucous that lends itself to an enjoyable meal as well. And the sushi is very good, too. read more

Have eaten here and enjoyed so many times over the years. Just ordered delivery. 1 chicken Terriyaki, 1 NY strip Terriyaki, 1 edamame, 1 ponzu sauce. Delivery came 30 minutes early which was great! Food was terrible. Dry overcooked chicken with a cold tub of congealed sauce on the side. Beef not dry but over cooked. Cold congealed teriyaki (I guess) sauce on the side. I doused in Soy sauce and still couldn't eat. Cold sad broccoli and inedible corn. Grand total $113. Called the restaurant to complain at right before 8pm and no answer. This used to be one of my favorite places to eat in or order out. Never again. Do not waste your money. You'll end up hungry and resentful. They have completely changed how they cook and serve teriyaki. read more

I grew up in Marin and have eaten at Robata since 1984. I remember talking my family to have Sushi for the first time and my brother was 14 and ate the entire ball of wasabi thinking that it was avocado ... greedy teenager served him right. We moved away from Marin 8 years ago and have eaten there sporadically since. It was hit and miss the last couple of years, but tonight it was downright awful. The service was great, but the sushi was uninspired overpriced and some of it was fishy. To pay 170$ for crappy sushi is not something I am very happy about. I have gone here since 1995. It was a go-to spot. Reasonably priced and great interaction with the sushi chefs at the sushi bar. Took a friend there for a surprise 5 months ago. It was ok but very expensive, but I was splurging. Went last night before a meeting and was remarkably disappointed. 1. Sat at the sushi bar so I could interact with the sushi chefs (in years past they have been fabulous). Nope. Had to deal with a VERY green waitress who asked 1 minute after I sat down, "Wanna order?" I looked at the menu and was SHOCKED how the prices have increased in MONTHS. I should have left at that moment. 2. I ordered hamachi and maguro. The pieces (2 each) were small with a huge amount of rice. (Look at my review of Taki in Novato and the picture). Robato is $4.00 more per order than Taki and lesser quality. 3. Waitress never checked back in and it took me 10 minutes to flag her for the bill. 4. EVERYTHING is "extra" including tea! If I wanted miso and cucumber salad it would be, dig this, $11.95 EXTRA. I can buy a cucumber and a package of miso for a couple of dollars. And all throughout the menu it states, "Prices subject to change". No reason to continue as other reviewers have nailed it. The best Japanese food in Marin, for sure! The owner is very generous and nice, and this place is packed with repeat customers! Oh my god is the food delicious. The chefs take their efforts of food creation and satisfaction towards customers taste-buds to another level. We have been here several times, and each time is better than the last. Many of the recent reviews complained about the price which is typical for Marin. The special that I ordered was $29+ and was very tasty and filling, including soup, a small seaweed dish, mochi ice cream. Decent value for the variety of food to sample. The staff was attentive and we were seated without any wait at about 6:30 pm on a weekday. It appears to be a popular place for families with plenty of seating and parking. read more

What is up with these insane prices??? Rolls up to $25? To add a miso and salad, $10?! .... I have a hard time wrapping my head around a sushi spot that can charge these kinds of prices, but even some of the best places in Marin county with Michelin stars don't charge these rates. The rolls are tasty and they're ok, but NOT $25 good. If anything, I think they're a little too big. Personally I love to get a few different rolls and nigiri to get some variety in a meal, but 1 Robata roll alone is hard to finish, except when you have to pay with your first born child, you don't leave a bite wasted. ... This whole thing is preposterous, but also a shame bc the previous reviews clearly complain about prices. I've eaten at Robata for many years. It's never been a first or second choice (although a few of my friends swear by it) but rather it's always been the place I go to when other spots are closed or bc they deliver. My experience here has always been hit or miss. Take out and delivery often has something missing or wrong. I'm sad about all these recent price raises, but I almost have to laugh, it's really just kind of silly! ... but hey if folks want to pay those prices and Robata is staying in business then more power to you! Incredible vegetables. So so sushi. We had the spicy tuna roll which tasted like yesterday's fish Is this canned tuna? The vegetables from the grill (mushrooms, corn, leeks and eggplant) were wonderful. Who'd have guessed that roasted leek stalks could be spicy and chewy. Mushrooms were spicy and enough for two. We tried this place years ago, and it was dreadful. Then, we thought maybe since it's been sold, we'll try it again. When I say the owner is an asshole, I'm being kind. He clearly didn't read the memo the importance of being nice to the customer. Being polite to the customer. Being thankful for the customer. This idiot went off, and boy did it catch me off guard. It was so random. So out of no where. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He just went on a rant. I had never experienced anything like it. We obviously won't be returning. This guy is a loose cannon. If you were smart, do not try Robata in Mill Valley. The owner, Boi is a horrible human, which is why the turnover is apparently so high at this restaurant. This guy has no business dealing with the public. And, to top it off, the food is so unbelievably bad, I spit it out in my napkin. Can comfortably say the worst sushi in Marin. My family and I have been dining at Robata regularly for 25 years. We celebrate nearly every birthday there. The portions are super generous, menu is extensive (both traditional dishes and more modern fare) and the quality of fish has stayed very consistent over the years. They have delicious locally-sourced Uni (my personal fave), and I'd recommend any guest to ask for their by-request-only Japanese menu! Robata also has an awesome cold sake list; I've found some of my favorite Junmai Daiginjo sakes after first trying them at Robata. You can tell the staff there are a family, and they've had the same sushi chefs running the bar for years. Much of their fish comes straight from Japan, and their sushi chefs are all Japanese (definitely a good sign!) Thanks Robata, for years of deliciousness! read more

Today i am working in Marin county ( Absolutely lovely area! ) and i had a hankering for Sushi so my work colleague and i came here for lunch. The place is on the large side and the kitchen is huge and is in full view so you can watch your food being prepared as you sit at the bar. our server was quick and friendly. We both ordered off the lunch special menu. My meal consisted of 1 california roll, thinly sliced chicken breast with teriyaki glaze, small side of salad and a small bowl of rice. We also ordered a large bowl of edemami to munch on while we waited for the food. The meal was good and i will definitely be back next time i travel through Mill Valley - San Rafeal area. Maybe it's the winter weather, but I've been craving Asian food as of late. I hadn't dined at Robata Grill in years. But I always remembered it being a nice place with solid food. However, since it's situated in an office plaza, it kind of fell off my radar. And then a few weeks ago, a Yelper was raving to me about their lunch. So I decided to take my friend's advice and revisit Robata this afternoon. The Good: - There's plenty of free parking. No need to worry about feeding your meter or getting towed. - The friendly hosted seated me right away. She gave me the option to sit at the counter or at a table. I chose the table. - They offer a very reasonable lunch special. Choose a combo of items (one grilled or fried item + sushi rolls) for under $15. The meal includes miso soup (perfect for cold weather!), a small salad, and a generous side order of steamed rice. I wound up ordering the pan-fried Gyozo (4 pork potstickers that come with a yummy dipping sauce) and the spicy tuna rolls (6 rolls/order). The Not-As-Good: - While I thoroughly enjoyed/devoured my Gyozo platter, I found the spicy tuna rolls a bit on the fishy side. While I'm no sushi expert, I don't think this was the freshest fish. But then again, if you're only paying $6-$7 for sushi rolls, I guess you can't expect the moon. That being said, I may want to try another roll/fish next time around. All in all, Robata Grill remains a solid lunch destination. It's conveniently located off the freeway; has plenty of parking; it's reasonably priced (my entire lunch + sparkling water cost me $16.75 without tip); the wait-staff is friendly and efficient; and it will certainly fulfill your Asian craving. I took myself out to lunch the other day and since this place is about 1/2 mile from where I work I decided to give it a try. I am pretty selective about Sushi since when it is good it is GREAT and when it is bad it HORRIBLE. Plus it has been my experince if you walk in to a Sushi place and you can smell fish it ain't gonna be good.... NO oder... None.. zip... nada... I was happy! When I walked in the door I was greeted with a wonderful smile and a sense that I had been a regular for years... but since this was my first time I can only imagine how gracious they must always be. I was very happy with the my selection. I had the spicy tuna roll and it was fantastic. Fresh Fresh Fresh is the operative word. The portion was huge and for $6.25 it took me most of the afternoon to eat it. I love miso soup and their miso was terrific just enough tofu to make it a perfect blend of miso and protein. Love I've been coming to Robata since I was two years old; I learned how to use chopsticks here. I love this place. This is my childhood sushi restaurant, and has great food! The waiters are amazingly kind, and welcoming. There is one waitress who had been working here since I was little and I still see her when I go! I love it! Not to mention that the sushi is great; and so is everything else. Completely recommend. read more
