Several weeks ago, I made reservations to try @rocamartillo for dinner. It's right next to where the Spurs now practice. It's one of the newest restaurants that Jason Dady opened with exquisite indoor and outdoor seating. Dad had Lemonade, Hubby had the Margarita on The Roca, and I had The Healer on happy hour. Happy hour ends at 6pm. We tried the Bread Service and Deviled Eggs, which were both fantastic. Hubby and I shared the Mixed Field Greens. Dad had the Roasted Cauliflower Bisque. Dad liked his Smoked Brisket Lasagna. I had the Duck Confit, which was a pasta dish with duck. It was not what I expected but it was good. Hubby had the Parmigiano Fried Chicken. Last nights dinner at Roca and Martillo was filled with these menu items. We decided on the tomahawk which was perfectly cooked temp wise however to me it was a bit too salty. The meatballs were lacking a little flavor however the sauce itself was delicious The robust flavors in the quail was what made this dish stand out for me. It was my fave on this visit. I would definitely love to give them another visit and try some of the Italian items. The restaurant itself was very nice. Definitely a great atmosphere for a social gathering. I don't really have a lot to say here. Everything was, ok. Went on a Saturday morning at 11am, today, and they don't offer the lunch menu as an option. Just dinner menu. And the food was, ok. I just ate the meatballs with some of the garlic bread. Meatballs tasted frozen and heated. But there was a good amount of them. The garlic bread was fine but others who had to said the garlic on theirs was overpowering. The table had some cazuelas, marscapone crab dip, shrimp scampi, and pepperoni dip. I think only the scampi was finished completely. A couple of people had the duck confit and said it had no flavor. Could not taste the duck at all. It's shredded in there. They compared it to a tuna casserole. The best dish looked like the fried chicken. The servers were excellent. Very attentive and kept checking on us. It was early so it was pretty empty. We were able to have conversation at the table. The music they were playing was nice also. But honestly if I'm back at the rock I'll just eat the bao with chicken at the snack stand. I love how the seats have arms making it easier for disabled patrons or people needing a little help getting up. The service was wonderful and the food was delicious. I got the brisket lasagna. The pasta layers are very thick and was a bit difficult for me to cut through but the flavor was spot on and the brisket was excellent. I would get it again. They have a lovely rooftop. We were there for a spurs event and the staff up there was very sociable and helpful. I Did have a bit of a time going up and down the stairs and didn't really investigate if they had an elevator or not. Parking is across the open area so it's a drive even if parked in disabled spots. read more

We were here yesterday for the Spurs game. The restaurant wasn't busy inside but all tables outside were. I think they had only 1 cook, our order took almost 45 minutes. We shared a simple pepperoni pizza and a cocktail. The pizza was ok but it reminded me of high school pizza, kinda from the microwave. It looked like the cook doesn't know how to cook. The cocktail was tiny with barely any alcohol and too sweet. The service was so slow, I don't think our order went through when we ordered until we asked for our cocktail that took 30 mins until we asked for it then 15 minutes later our pizza came. The kitchen was understaffed and whoever was cooking couldn't even make a pizza! read more

I was at Roca & Martillo for a Spurs watch party and had the most insulting experience with their management. I was sitting on a couch in an open, unreserved area with zero signage. A manager actually approached me, claimed the spot was for the owner, and then physically took the seat I was using to move it into a "VIP" section.Instead of treating me like a paying guest, I was treated like a furniture supplier for the owner's private party. When I confronted the manager about taking a seat away from a guest who was already using it, he was completely dismissive and didn't even offer an apology.As a local and a loyal Spurs fan, I'm disgusted that management would literally take a seat out from under a customer just to benefit the owner's section. This was a blatant display of hostile management and zero hospitality. I've already reached out to corporate for a formal response, but be warned: if you aren't part of the "inner circle" here, your comfort doesn't matter to them. I don't know that I've had much success with JD's concepts and Roca & Martillo didn't change that. I think the jam may be spread a bit too thin with his ventures because none of them seem to hit the marks they should easily hit. Located directly in front of the new Spurs training facility, the space is well-appointed with both indoor and patio seating. While there is a side parking lot, I can imagine it gets filled pretty quickly if there are events going on at the facility proper. While we were there a band was doing a soundcheck and there's NO way you can enjoy your meal while a band is playing. The bass reverberated through the dining room as if you had front row seats. The furnishings are beautiful though the seats at the tables in the main dining room scrape loudly when pulled out. So much so, the host that sat us apologized before he pulled one out for me. I wasn't a fan of the cocktail menu and its lack of posted prices. Something about it makes me think they're trying to scam you with unlisted prices. I enjoyed the refreshing Eastern Sunset cucumber and gin cocktail, though the promised saffron syrup was undetectable. My husband's Four Roses old-fashioned was sufficient for happy hour. Nothing about the meal was memorable, which is sad to admit. The best bites we had were the Tuscan risotto arancini and HALF of the porcini-crusted onion rings. The cippolini jam the onion rings were served with would've been more appetizing had it been served at room temperature or warmer. As served, you had to use a fork or, heaven forbid, scoop the jam up with the onion rings pinched between firm fingers to get a bite with the two together. The seared ahi tuna mains that we ordered felt disjointed. The mandarin segments felt played out but the ahi was decent, but the "sear" was non-existent. The dill gremolata promised was absent and the citrus vinaigrette tasted as though the canned mandarin orange syrup was the "acidic" base. It was cloyingly sweet and artificial-tasting. The inconsistency of the veggies' cuts is a basic skill in culinary school, which I'm assuming wasn't pushed as important in the R&M training sessions. As someone who's faced down my fair share of public health inspectors in kitchens, a massive pet peeve of mine is chipped stoneware. The cup of vinaigrette I was given was pocked with chips to the point I skipped using it. This spot is definitely a one and done for us. Instead of quickly standing up concept after concept, I think Jason Dady needs to go back to the basics and spend more time impressing upon his GMs and staff the importance of attention-to-detail, consistency, and flavor profiles. read more

We came to Roca &Martillo yesterday for my husbands birthday . We like the casual ambiance and of course their food and service . We ordered the Wagyu meatballs which was flavorful and I also ordered some dip which is the goat's cheese dip . It was okay but the taste was a bit underwhelming. What really stood out was the shrimp scampi wherein the shrimps were cooked so perfectly and you can taste its freshness and the very flavorful mix of olives, garlic and olive oil . This dish was executed perfectly. My husband also enjoyed his steak so much and last but not the least we ordered dessert which my husband is a big cheesecake eater really enjoyed the generous portion and very delicious white chocolate cheesecake while i can't believe the simpler limoncello olive oil cake was so delicious . You could tell it was like homemade with recipes handed down within the family for so many generations and I realize the simpler the cooking or recipe is , the more delicious the food is . My friend and I had arrived a little early to order from the dinner menu so we decided to wait by ordering appetizers and mocktails. We had the Tuscan-Herbed Mozzarella, the Marinated Steak Bites, and the Caprese Deviled Eggs (the last on a lark). The portions were generous and the food so delicious (we ate every last bite). We were so full we left to do some shopping and returned for dinner as we wanted to try the Brisket Lasagna. Delicious! The whole experience there, the ambience (happy diners), the Kentucky Derby/Dachshund races, and the exceptional service made for a very pleasurable dining experience. We were really disappointed. I went with my friends for dinner and the experience was not good. The salmon was served raw, the pasta had a strange taste and wasn't enjoyable at all. On top of that, it took almost 40 minutes for the food to arrive, and when it finally did, it wasn't worth the wait because it didn't taste good. Sad, that another restaurant concept of Dady fascinates but will ultimately fail because management loses focus. He is talented! Our server was friendly.. but confused when our appetizer showed up with one entree, then other entree 10 minutes later??? Never poured us more wine. The deviled eggs nothing special with too sweet tomato jam. We liked the sweet tea pork tenderloin cooked perfectly, but the very wilted lettuce unappetizing. The white pizza was good. Friday night in restaurant was 1/4 occupied. Outside partially occupied with something like picnicking around fires or heaters in Brackenridge park. Inside very industrial with no warmth and a kitchen door hanging open, brightly exposing service area. This concept seems confused.. and not worth a return. read more

We had met some friends to celebrate a birthday and were looking forward to try this new fusion of Italian/Texan menu but unfortunately we were more disappointed than anything. We had an early reservation and were the first only ones in the restaurant on a weekend. We got the dinner menus but then they switched them for the brunch menu, but then they switched again back to dinner menus.. understandable since they were new and trying to figure things out. Our food order started to come. I had ordered the Duck Confit pasta, the waiter mentioned the duck will be tossed in with the pasta, so no duck leg like on a regular confit. I was fine with that but highly disappointed once the dish came out. It reminded me of tuna casserole, the duck was non existent and seemed like it came from a can. Absolutely no salt or flavor to it. A couple of us from our party ordered the same and had same experience. We had to ask for some salt to season our dish and also ended up using some of the butter from the Shrimp Scampi cazuela (which was actually really good). I would 100% order the Bao Buns that are served in the snack area over the dishes here at the restaurant. read more

Wonderful food! The pulled mozarella is so yummy. Addictive! And love the pasta. It's really hard to choose from the appetizers since they are all so good! The Valentine's Day service was pretty bad. We ordered from a preselected food menu with their wine "pairing", though you can hardly call it that when the same red wine is offered with both salmon and steak. The wine came at the end of each course and our main entrees weren't hot. On top of all this, there was a mandatory 20% tip for a table of two. Roca & Martillo is the best kept secret of San Antonio. Located at The Rock at La Cantera, near the Shops at La Cantera, this place is absolute fire!!!! On Apple Maps this place is still a dirt lot but I assure you it's worth the venture. The decor is a solid vibe, lunch or dinner on the square, doesn't matter it's chill. They have a lower patio and a balcony patio. Inside is chill and comfortable. The restaurant is situated close to a big screen that overlooks the square. The square has so much to do...corn hole, checkers, life size pong, soccer goals, a kids' splash pad, you name it. The big building on the other side of the giant screen is the Spurs' training center. The food was fire!!! We ordered the Burrata Di Bufala and the Wagyu Black Peppercorn-Parmigiono Meatballs with bread service. The Burrata was so good I went back and ordered again for dinner. The drinks are great, and they pour well. The staff were great. Jesus was our waiter/bartender for lunch and he was absolutely top notch when it comes to service. Later that night we had Jasmine (spell check) as our bartender and she is truly a master mixer! This woman knows her way around the bar and will make your drink to absolute perfection. Cannot recommend this place enough. If I lived here, Id be there every day. If you're in the San Antonio area you HAVE to try this place. Went to this place August. Food and the waitstaff was outstanding. One problem, they had a new ordering system and the system wasn't taking all the orders, mainly the bar. Our server told us what was happening, no problem. When we got the bill, there was a MB charge on $11.29 and they stated it was for the bar and after asking about it, was informed that was correct. Food tax was correct at 8.25%. However, tax of 11.29 on $25 is 45%. Sure, the difference was only $9.23 for us, but if their system was over charging that evening, how much in tax did they collect. I was extremely disappointed with the food at this location and I hate it...I wanted to enjoy the food at the newly opened restaurant on The Rock at La Cantera but that was not the case. Monday November 18 @ 8pm Absolutely Love This Place! We eat at pretty high end restaurants and many food trucks. We are food addicts. First off this place is beautiful, very comfy environment. Our waiter Micah was awesome, he gave the best advice on the menus, dinner and drinks. He hit every craving. Our appetizers were 1. Baked Goat Cheese and the mushrooms were perfectly blended and didn't over rule the cheese. The salt in this dish was perfect. I have to say because I'm a salt freak if it's not seasoned properly or very bland. 2. Baked Wagyu Black Pepper Parmigiano Meatballs were, sent by the Chef Mr. Russell. My husband was excited and I am not a big meat ball fan. For myself the meat never has flavor or sometimes I don't like how it's not cooked the way I prefer. However I always try everything once! Let me tell you this meatball was soo darn delicious in flavor and the salt was perfectly juicy and tender not tough and the sauce was the perfect blend. My husband was eating them so fast I had to load my plate fast. Haha 3. Artisan Bread Toasted with Garlic Butter & Fresh Herbs had a great amount of butter with an outside crips and soft tender center. By the way my husband ordered a ranch water and I ordered a margarita. He liked his drink pretty much because it went well with the appetizer and mine was perfect. I like a strong margarita. The tequila helped cleanse our pallets well to taste the flavors in these amazing dishes. My husband's main dish was the Parmigiano Fried Chicken and let me just say he has braces and was iffy about it because his teeth hurt. But the chicken was so tender and juicy and very soft on the inside crust with an epic crips outside to it because of the type of batter they use. My main dish was the Duck Confit and it had me dancing in my seat. Haha it was different because I expected a duck leg and sides. But this dish did not disappoint! I highly recommend! The duck in this dish was perfectly tender, the cream sauce was so darn good and the corn made it even better with the sweetness to it and the crumbs hit the spot. It reminded me of a casserole but this dish tasted better than one. The salt in it was great. I never needed salt the whole night. My husband said this is the first night you never needed salt. Lol We were so full and Mr. Russell sent over the White Chocolate Cheesecake. We took to go and at later in the night. The strawberry on top was the perfect amount and didn't kill the chocolate flavor. This dessert is a must have! Micah, by the way checked on us often and we had great laughs with him great down to earth foody guy. He knew the menu and dishes first hand, he tasted. If he had not had it, he still stated if we like the dish to try it. He never drove us away from any thing on the menu. I would definitely request him. It's not easy having a server with a great sense of humor, also knows the menu well to describe them. Overall great place and great hospitality we will be back. I came here for brunch on a Sunday with one of my friends. The place is lovely. I really loved the overall decor and feel of the place. The server we had was excellent. She was attentive without being overbearing. The food was good. I had a pasta with butternut squash - it was good but they most certainly skimped on the squash. There were 3 pieces of it in the whole dish. The gnocchi is different and in a red sauce. It had good flavor but it you like the traditional style and taste of it, don't order this. First time checking out Roca & Martillo. Overall we had a great experience, the appetizers were great! Deviled eggs and crunchy arancini with a Parmesan bechamel sauce were both delicious. For our entrees, we ordered the Parmesan Fried Chicken and the Chicory Salad. The chicken was so crunchy and delicious. Exactly what you want from a fried chicken. Lightly battered and crunch throughout. The salad was terribly disappointing. The menu description led me to believe that this salad would be savory with lemon and Parmesan but instead it was heavily sweetened by some sort of dressing that was not in the description and not at all what I had hoped for. Our server was so amazing and offered to take the salad off our bill. Next time, I'll try the Caesar salad or maybe the sweet tea brined pork tenderloin?!?!! read more

Stay away! 2nd worst dining experience of my life! Things started out rough when they sent a piece of beef out in a disposable plastic box with a plastic fork and....a metal steak knife...umm, wut? Note that the only option at the walk up bar window is to-go, even if you let them know you're sitting on the patio. After my plastic fork broke as anticipated, I got another myself after waiting a good 10 mins on someone to return to the bar window (no servers outside working the patio even on a packed night at The Rock, by the way). I told them I was dining outside on the patio but nevertheless, no wait staff and plastic flatware. They also seasoned my steak with ginger. Yup, ginger. This is a very distinct and easily distinguishable spice - IYKYK. While my dish was cooked well, it was seasoned very wrong. I let the bartender know about it to get a new meal prepared with just salt and black pepper. I also overheard wait staff saying that they saw ginger added to this dish in the kitchen when they were in the back and that they wondered about it. When I asked politely for a new dish, I was told a manager would be out to talk with me (I didn't ask for this mind you, I just wanted a ginger-free steak). That's when the cherry on top arrived - Jason. This manager deliberately went out of his way to let me know there was no ginger on the premises and assured me that wasn't the case. I encouraged him to try a bite off the uneaten portion so he could verify that it was indeed ginger but he declined. Things escalated pretty quickly when he told me that he controlled every variable in their kitchen and that saying that ginger existed in their restaurant when it did not was a lie. I asked if he knew that the wait staff there said they saw ginger being applied to the beef and he said no. When I pointed out that he didn't control a very major variable of his wait staff talking about ingredients in my dish that he claims didn't exist in the restaurant, he took it upon himself to call me a liar. That's when I'd had enough and left. I was issued a partial refund afterwards - gee, thanks. Stay away from this place at all costs. I've heard it described as "fake Italian" and others I've talked with say their food and service has been equally terrible. It stinks that a reputable chef like Jason Dady has a place so poorly run that's attached to his namesake, but I suppose it is what it is. Simply put, don't spend your hard earned money here. There's so many better options, folks. read more

The restaurant is roomy and welcoming. We were seated immediately and had great service. The burrata plate was amazing and generous enough for 4 people. They were out of the wine we ordered, but graciously substituted a more expensive wine for the same price. We also had smoked brisket lasagna, butternut squash pasta, bolognese, and a very generous spring greens salad. The pasta is spot-on with the perfect chew! We were too full for dessert, but have had their goat cheesecake on a previous visit, it is a sweet/savory delight. Please try this spot, our family loves it and wishes it success! read more

Advertisement said we would get 2 drink tickets (did not say it had to be a specific drink but it did) dinner was supposed to be a chef-curated buffet We got chips and salsa, corn dogs, steak fingers (DQ looked better), Mac n cheese loaded with garlic and funnel cakes. Tried the place out for the first time. I have to say it's very nice and the service is very good. They are very attentive and pretty fast at bringing out food and drinks. The only bad part and probably the most important is the food. We have I guess what considered like a dinner for a party of four or more. It comes with a bunch of courses and they were all pretty much a fail other than the desserts at the end of the meal. They need better cooks the place was pretty empty given how nice it is. read more
