I'm from the area. I've been in this place a bunch of times. Food isn't bad during regular hours. Karaoke is always a lot of fun. But this place reminds of an episode of Bar Rescue. It's dirty and the clientele are 20 something's loaded on cheap beer. Mixed drinks suck. It's not a date spot, and the cops are parked outside of this place for a reason. There's usually a line at the door, and drunks loitering outside. I ordered carry out while in the area on work travel. It was a little later when I picked up my order around 8pm as it was the evening I got in town. There was a family in there eating and a large group but it definitely seems like this is more of a dive bar than a restaurant. It didn't seem like it was very clean just from what I noticed while waiting at the bar for my order and having some intoxicated fellow try to talk to me. The staff was very nice and helpful. What a weird place this was. It was good but you will see the most varied crowd in one bar. We saw everything from DC Political types to stock brokers to bikers, to college kids. If you like Karaoke than definitely head here. The DJ is pretty good and actually not a bad singer or he wasn't when we were there. Definitely lots of smashed people here but I will say the bouncer at the door was one of friendliest people I have met at a bar. The jury is still out for me on this spot for brunch. Generally the food is pretty good and reasonably priced. Sometimes it seems like the coffee may be instant, which would be a deal-breaker for me if I run into that again. The staff is friendly, although a little scarce. I went here for a chill night out with friends for my birthday. I was concerned about making a reservation, but I ended up going with a bunch of people early in the night (9pm) and was able to get a big table for all of us. This isn't the standard private room karaoke bar, which makes the experience even better. The whole crowd is engaged, and will cheer you on. I would say the crowd is slightly older, (late 20s-30+). At some point later in the night, the dance floor is open, and they play line dance music. I really enjoyed it, and will probably be coming back with friends sometime soon. read more

I was visiting Alexandria with some friends and looking for some fun times near our hotel when we found the Rock It. I didn't order food, we were really just there for beer and karaoke, neither of which disappointed. The beer prices are reasonable for the area. The karaoke is serious business! There's lots of rules involved, but that just keeps things moving well. The DJs were friendly and fun and there is some talent on that stage! It seemed like there were a lot of regulars and everyone was very supportive and just having a great time. I wish I lived closer, but I'll definitely make it back some day. read more

Rock It Grill is a true dive-- as in be prepared to jam your pool cue into the coin slot to make sure the table registers that you paid. It's definitely a place where you should probably bring your own fun in the form of a large number of friends who will keep you having an amazing time. The waitresses were sweet, the bartenders were not, and they had every single TV watching the same awful football game-- what about the other ten games on that night, RIG? I would absolutely refuse to bring people from out of town or bring people who wanted to flirt or anything, but I had a good time, so three stars seems like a good compromise. True story: my first weekend in town when I was a child of 22 I went to Rock It Grill with my roommate. I ended up getting blackout drunk (bad roommate! Bad Rachel Z.!) and talking to a guy to whom I eventually gave my number. This was not a part of my memory, so maybe I wrote my number across the bar with blacklight ink or something horrible, but he actually called and I (being new in town and having a job that was not conducive to meeting adults) actually met him. He was good looking but he looked like he was 100 years older than I was, which means he's probably my age now. All of this is to say that I thought our one single friend might be able to meet a cute, ancient (e.g. our age) person to flirt with. Alas! There were a lot of unattractive people here the night we went! Holy crap! Maybe it was because I was a DD, but maybe don't follow my example from days gone by and give your number to people bellying up to this bar. Still, I can almost guarantee a good time (and a couple of cringe-inducing karaoke performances-- like the creepy IT-looking guy singing... wait, can he look up my IP on yelp? I've had friends discuss this place, and finally I venture out of my zone to go check it out. It was a loud, busy bar on a Friday night with lots of different types of people singing karaoke. Has the potential to be a cool hang out spot, if Karaoke is your thing. Everyone was laughing and singing along. Was very crowded, so I'm guessing lots of people liked it! If you're going for a quiet "get to know you" type date, this is probably not the place to go! My friend and I were passing the Rock It Grill looking for a quick cheap bite to eat when the Monday 1/2 off sandwiches special caught our eye. It was a Monday so we looked at the menu. The crab sandwich and chipotle chicken sandwich both sounded great to us. It's a dive bar that isn't the most appealing place to eat, so our expectations for the 1/2 off sandwiches weren't very high. To our surprise, both sandwiches were very good. The food took a while considering we were the only people in the bar/restaurant actually eating, but the food tasted fresh so we didn't complain after our first bite. The chipotle chicken sandwich was so fresh and had the perfect amount of spicy chipotle flavor. The service isn't great, but I think that comes with the territory of eating at a dive bar. I go here sometimes because it has two of the very rare Alexandria pool tables but I'm not overly fond of the place and here are the reasons why. 1. This is an expensive bar. I mean like everything is just not worth it. The food is ok but not worth the price. 2. I have seen a man start multiple arguments and fights in this place and they keep letting him in. 3. I like this place. As a Marine I've been to many different bars all over the world and this is one of favorites. The BURGERS are really good! I was watching " how I met your mother ".... the episode where they were searching for the perfect burger spot... this is one of my go to places to satisfy my burger cravings. ... and I'm from laurel md! Rock It Grill is one of my favorite Old Town haunts. The food is not fantastic, and the drinks vary in quality - sometimes they're right on the money, sometimes they're on the strong side. But the place (which is easily recognizable from its garish yellow and black signage outside) is one of the best places for Karaoke in the DMV area. Get there early to sign up. They have karaoke every night of the week. The singing starts around 9:00 and goes until about 1:30, but the place fills up quickly with regulars who will sing once and then put their name back on the list right away to get a second song in during the night. The DJ generally goes straight down the list - I haven't seen any favoritism for tips. The crowd varies from night to night - sometimes very country, sometimes more college, or biker, or standard Old Town 30's... you kinda roll the dice. The regulars that show up are by and large really talented though; it's usually (not always) a treat to hear the singers. Between sets there are dance numbers played, with a fairly decent dance floor in front of the stage. Overall, if you like karaoke, this is a good spot to check out. read more

Went in there on a Saturday night. To start out with the positives, the bouncer/door guy was super cool. The DJ that was doing the karaoke was really nice too. I was meeting up with a couple of friends. Two of us got there at the same time and we each ordered a beer. Another person showed up and she ordered food which wasn't correct. It wasn't crowded at this point but we were still waiting a long time for beers. We got our second beer and when I ordered a third the waitress says....you know pitchers are cheaper. So I ordered a pitcher. Waited about 15 minutes and as I was not looking and talking to someone the waitress puts a mug on the table and walks off. No pitcher of beer though. I waited another 15-20 minutes figuring they were a little busy. The problem was there was a large group and another table behind us that didn't seem to have an issue getting service. I went to the bar to order the pitcher. Later I went up to get a second one. One of the people that was with us was headed to the bar so I asked her to grab a 3rd pitcher. When one of the people was ready to leave (just before the rest of us) she wanted to pay her tab. She told the waitress that she was going to cover 2 beers because they put her on my tab. When I went to pay they charged me for 4 pitchers. That I noticed right away. The waitress tried to say she brought me a pitcher which never happened. I knew which bartenders I had gotten the 2 pitchers from and as I said a friend got the 3rd. They didn't care and the waitress was rude. I paid the tab and left because there was no point in arguing with the attitude I was getting. I wont be going back and neither will the other folks I was with. Live in the neighborhood seen it many times, today we decided to try it, ordered the mussels with marinara sauce, it was amazing, I have cooked since I was a kid, specializing in seafood and Italian,this is one of the best Marinara Sauce I had in quite a while. The mussels were tender and sweet all open and the lemon was juicy and fresh. Highly recommend it. Yes it's casually designed interiors-wise; but worth the food. I went with a group of friends and was acting as the designated driver on this particular Saturday night. After being charged $2.50 for a glass of water, I went back for a refill and the bartender asked for $2.50 again. I explained that I was remaining sober in order to safely drive my friends home after our night out. She had no compassion for this situation and said that everybody has to spend at least $10. Awesome! I'm glad at the Rock It Grill they are more concerned about getting ridiculous profit margins on glasses of water than the safety of their customers. Oh yeah, agree with the last review that the DJ needs to go. So, I went there about a month ago with some friends on Friday night. I recommended the bar to a friend of mine who said he won't be going there because of the bad reviews on yelp. He is such a snob. So i decided to write a review. Only if all the people who had a blast at this place would write reviews.... Anyway, my experience with the place was remarkable. The crowd was fun. Some good singers they had. The drinks were strong. I ordered mushroom swiss burger with side salad and it was delicious. The portion was big so i had to take some home.
