Market Broiler Fremont -- A Happy Night Guaranteed…read more I've been to Market Broiler three or four times now, and somehow I leave happy every single time. At this point, it's becoming one of those places where I feel like a good night is almost guaranteed. This visit was for Social Hour, which is only offered in the designated bar area. The service was just as warm and attentive as during regular dining. My server was genuinely friendly, even noticed my Oura Ring and chatted with me about it for a bit. I also noticed several nearby tables greeting the servers and manager like regulars. Everyone seemed relaxed and happy, and the whole place had that comfortable neighborhood-restaurant feeling that's hard to manufacture. There was even a small personal touch for me: they have a sheephead fish mounted on the wall. I used to catch sheephead fairly often when I fished around Catalina Island, so seeing it immediately made the place feel a little more familiar. Their complimentary sourdough continues to be one of my favorite things here. It comes out fresh and warm, with just the right amount of tang. The crust is thin and crisp rather than thick and rock-hard, while the inside stays soft. It's much better than the cold, overly hard complimentary bread you get at many restaurants. I had the MB Honey Blonde Draft, which was easy-drinking, refreshing, and very enjoyable with seafood. I'd definitely order it again. The highlight of the Social Hour food was easily the Ponzu Scallops Crudo. This was excellent. The first thing I tasted was the gentle acidity of the ponzu along with a very fresh, almost seaweed-like ocean flavor. Then came the crisp freshness of the green onion, and finally the subtle sweetness and brininess of the scallop itself. The seasoning added layers without covering up the scallop. This is absolutely something I would order again. The Fresh Shucked Oysters were also very good. They were on the lighter, cleaner side rather than intensely briny, with a surprisingly creamy texture. They were shucked cleanly without the shell fragments I sometimes run into at cheaper oyster places. Personally, I much prefer these raw oysters to the grilled version. The Chargrilled Garlic Butter Oysters were the weakest dish of the night. The presentation was beautiful, with grilled lemon and coarse salt underneath, but two of the three oysters in the first order were very small, and they also seemed a little overcooked. The garlic flavor was much milder than I expected, and the topping tasted more like breadcrumbs than garlic butter. What impressed me was how the restaurant handled it. I mentioned to my server that the oysters were very small, and he immediately offered to bring another order. He even specifically asked the kitchen to choose larger oysters. The replacement was dramatically better--much plumper and juicier. Even so, I still prefer the raw oysters, so I probably wouldn't order the chargrilled ones again. But the service recovery was excellent. I finished with the Coastal Clam & Andouille Pot, and this was another winner. The broth was rich and very savory without being too salty, and the cilantro added just the right amount of freshness. They were generous with the clams, and the Andouille gave the broth a little extra depth. Their warm sourdough was perfect for soaking up the broth. One thing I will say: Social Hour isn't necessarily "cheap" if you look strictly at portion size. Three oysters here, three scallops there, and the bill can add up quickly. Their $19 Daily Deals are probably the stronger value if your main goal is getting the most food for the money. But I still think the overall Social Hour experience is worth the price. That's really what keeps bringing me back. Market Broiler isn't perfect every single time--I've had mahi that was a little dry, a steak that came out slightly more cooked than requested, and this time the first order of oysters was too small. But every time something hasn't been quite right, the staff has handled it seriously and graciously. And every time, I've still left happy. There may be restaurants with more impressive individual dishes, and there may be cheaper happy hours somewhere else. But there aren't many places that make me think: "If I want to have a happy night, I can just go to Market Broiler." It's becoming my neighborhood comfort restaurant. A happy night guaranteed.

Many in our large party were locals and raved about the place. We ordered the two big seafood platters and coconut shrimp for the table to start. The local person who ordered extra shrimp said they are the best he's ever had. They were good!! Everything on the big platters went! I had a salad and then the salmon and was extremely pleased with my meal. We ordered wine for the table and they were great about refilling the glasses and keeping up on ordered drinks and water refills. Two people ordered the mocktail and loved it. My only constructive criticism would be to keep up on clearing dirty plates. The dirty appetizer plates were still there on the table during dessert. Even with my not-so-subtle trying to hand them to the waiter. I would eat here again.

I'm sure a few minutes in an air fryer would crisp them right back up, but the fries also needed to be seasoned with a bit more salt as well. Overall, solid burger spot in Fremont.
