While at Blizzcon my boyfriend and I got lunch here. I had seen they had a shrimp tempura burrito and I really wanted to try it. My boyfriend got the spicy tuna bowl. Right after we ordered our food was handed to us, which was convenient. My tempura burrito was alright, it was a lot smaller than I expected. There actually wasn't that much tempura shrimp in it, just one piece and it was mostly breading. My boyfriend said his spicy tuna bowl was just ok and took a while for him to eat it, which is unusual, so my guess is that he didn't like it that much. So a bit of a disappointing lunch. read more

I'll be honest, it was the cheapest option on the food truck lot at the anime convention I was at that wasn't fisted by a long line or just standard western fast food. AKA the line was the shortest for it. We got the: Rainbow Roll Burrito ($15): -It came out almost instantaneously. I'm not sure if this was good or bad. -Some of the rice was a bit mushy and the distribution of the sushi vinegar in the rice wasn't even. This made some parts of the burrito really sour and very unappealing to eat. We split it amongst 2 people as a snack and it was just okay. Rolling Sushi doesn't get as much recognition as the other trucks, but I must say, they have some pretty quality sushi. The prices are pretty average but can get a bit expensive if you go with the extensive cut rolls. The guys in the truck are true Japanese fellas that are always smiling and are happy to serve you. To help my gal friend out for her essay-writing about food truck culture (Yep. Her recreational studies professor seriously assigned his students to follow FTs.) I gave her a brief tour of her 1st ever rendezvous to a food truck round-up at the Los Al Picnic at the Plaza. Despite this trip what really caught her eye most was this blanched storage van w/ red accents, i.e. Rolling Sushi Van :P. Although I did conform to this "Uhh, I Don't Know About the Sushi Quality from a Van" ideology, & because she was in the mood for COOKED sushi (despite my 'lil persuasion for her to eat it raw), we gave it a try anyway for the Baked Lobster Roll ($10) & Jeena E's recommendation, the Rolling Ball (2 for $3). But like the majority of the Yelpers I was darn gullible & wrong about the sushi. We first obtained these rounded yummies of creamy shredded crab & outstanding use & flavor of tuna, joyfully mixed & rolled up, garnished with delicately yet generous, sesame oil-injected tempura flakes. Unfortunately I found out way too late that it was more penny-worthy if I knew the paper under the Rolling Balls was creatively & amusingly edible (yes, we actually used chopsticks) =/. Additionally, & finally, although I have stronger proclivity towards the raw side over cooked/baked/flambed, I was also unexpectedly wowed at the unbeatable quality, meatiness & flavor of the chunky morsels of lobster (drizzled by eel sauce & "spicy" mayo) atop of 8 bounteous Californian pieces. Unless you're sympathetically allergic to shellfish, I highly recommend the Baked Lobster Roll to those who have that strange fish-rice phobia to take this sushi adventure one baby step at a time =). Yea, we felt good giving away our $13 on incredibly delicious sushi--and free orange cuts--from a van! When I saw this cute little van in the distance practically hidden behind the 5 other full sized trucks I knew what was awaiting me. "Ted! It's the sushi van!! Bill C. loved it!" I checked the menu quickly but as soon as I saw the Lobster Roll ($10) I knew that was what I was getting. I love lobster rolls. They are probably my favorite roll. I paid and the nice man in the truck told me it would be a bit of a wait because they make them fresh. That's fine with me. I'm used to my lobster rolls taking a little bit longer (because of all the baking that happens). The wait was about 8 minutes, which was plenty of time to check out the menus on the other trucks. Ted picked up my sushi on the little tray and I immediately started eating. It was a huge roll, even for $10 it was huge. I think there were more than 8 pieces of CA roll underneath the lobster. It was very yummy. I loved the sweet sauce on top. I should have gone back and asked them to add spicy mayo and smelt egg. That's my favorite way to have lobster roll goodness in my mouth. But even without those additions this was still a very delicious roll. And I appreciated that I didn't see any lone scallops pretending to be lobster to fill up the space. But it isn't just about size, it's about intensity; and I had an intensely awesome Lobster Roll today. When I ordered, they told me 10 minutes, which makes sense as they are baked to order. And when it wasn't ready after about 10, they offered me and another customer bowls of miso soup to make the delay less painful. The soup was awesome, very flavorful with just a little green onion, and the Baked Lobster Roll kicked butt and took names. The cut was thick, the lobster was plentiful and it was heated perfectly. Many people are skeptical about eating from a food truck, but let me assure you sushi from a food truck is just as delicious! I first discovered RSV at the CHOC event at Knott's Berry Farm. My husband tried the Rolling Sushi Ball and was hooked. I am not as adventurous and go for the tuna handroll, the shrimp hand roll, or the Tuna Cali Roll, which is 8 huge pieces of cut California roll, loaded with tuna. The portions are more than generous, prices are fair (not any higher than going to a sushi bar), the service is fast (food is made on the spot, so some times you have to wait about 5 minutes), and you can tip if you want. There's no beer service, but many times you can find Chef Chris parked at a microbrewery like Noble Ale or Bootleggers. They take cash or credit, and service is always with a smile read more

The texture was a little mushy for my taste, but still fresh. The sashimi platter was good, nice and fresh , nice thick slices of 4 various fish and one skrimp . I like my sashimi cut this way so it's all good to me. Only compliant , you gotta give me more than one pack of soy sauce LOL I love mixing it with wasabi and dunking that shit in. The assorted sashimi was good but I'm only taking 1 star away because the salad was drenched in sauce and some of the salad leaves looked old. For the price of $13 and the portion size, I felt like I didn't get the best bang for my buck BUT the convenience and how quick I received my order makes up for it. I decided to get the Rolling roll and some California rolls. Why did I order California rolls instead of, say, a baked lobster roll or a handroll? I don't know. That was a bad move, on my part. Let's start out with the obvious. The California rolls were okay. Don't get me wrong -- they were good California rolls! But what's more to say? They were just ordinary. Now, moving onto the not so obvious... The bomb-diggity Rolling roll! What a sushi! A combination of tuna and crab and tempura "panko." What texture and flavor. Loved it! All and all, if you are craving sushi and this sushi van is in your area, go get something from it. Try something different. Don't get something you can get anywhere else, like the California rolls. However, he was super friendly and it was super fresh. Not to mention, it's not just thrown in a box and shoved at you. For a sushi van it's not as bad as one might expect. The product is still overpriced. The food is prepared in more of a fusion/fast food style with little respects for authentic Japanese taste. Given that this is just a branching out of the Rolling Sushi locations, you can pretty much trust this place to have fairly good quality fish. You can also guess that they have some style points going for them as some of their sushi creations are pretty creative and yummy. A combination that I'm always a fan of. In my meal I got Rolling Balls. Which seemed to be a sort of tuna in rice paper?, I dunno it was a California roll style in edible paper wrapping. I have to say, that was delicious. And for $3 , that was fairly light on my wallet. For my main dish I got the lobster roll. Which did take a while to make, but hey, you're baking lobster, who am I to judge quality? While waiting for this I saw someone's order of Tuna chips come out. Well, wouldn't you know that I just got massively hungry for it and ordered one for myself. It came out quick. Sushi from a Truck? Yea, I know it sounds like a horrible idea. When you think about it down right sounds like one of the worst food decision you could ever make leading to a night of kneeling before the porcelain alter. BUT I have to say Rolling Sushi Van is fresh and definitely a top contender in all these emerging food trucks. I ended up ordering the Rolling Ball and Lobster Roll. They are both equally F'in awesome. I don't think I could choose between them for top honor... so just order both. =) And this is coming from someone that doesn't particularly like sushi rolls. If normal rolls tasted like this at sushi joints, I would probably order rolls more often. I consider Rolling Sushi Van a must try if you like sushi.
