I love the concept of the restaurant: a two story fast casual place (it has touchscreens that you order from and a self-serve soda machine) that allows you to get your food quickly. I've been here twice and ordered the spicy oxtail pho and it was a major letdown. The pho was more expensive than other places and yet it was not spicy in the slightest. I don't mean "I have a high spice tolerance so I didn't really taste the heat" - I mean "I'm not sure if they even put a single spicy item here because there is absolutely no spice whatsoever". Everyone at my table agreed - including folks without a spice tolerance. Instead of a spicy flavor, the broth was overly oily and you need to add some sriracha and/or hiosin for it to taste good. The broth does not taste all that rich or flavorful by itself. A friend went here soon after it was open and raved about how good the spicy oxtail was - but when he came the second time (with me), he said that it was very different than what he had. I'm not sure if we caught them on two bad days (we came at not busy times slightly after your normal lunch time) or if their quality of food has declined since opening, but after two tries, I'm not going to try this again. The quantity of the oxtail is decent - though mine did not have any pieces with bones or tendon, which I would usually expect. It ended up tasting pretty similar to braised beef. For how much the pho costs, I was expecting much better. The dish was a real letdown. read more

The happy eatery is such a cool concept especially if you want to try all the different brands under happy eatery. One thing I wanted to point out is the parking. I'm not from Virginia so I parked in a nearby garage, which was about eight dollars an hour. If you're thinking about going I would recommend trying to see if there are other parking options just because $8 felt a little bit pricey to me. when I walked in, it was a self-serve situation. I quickly ordered on the kiosk and got my spicy oxtail pho within 10 minutes. For a $17 pho, it was a pretty decent size. I was a little bit disappointed by the oxtail. I expected a lot more oxtail, and it was a lot tougher than I was anticipating. As for the broth, it was very flavorful, but was not spicy at all. It was a little confusing on where to order - I guess the downstairs is for ordering boba and upstairs is for food? It was hard to get someone's attention but that's what I was told though later it did seem like you could order from either location. Regardless, there were touch screen monitors to order which was pretty straightforward and I got free spring rolls for checking in on Yelp! Their pho is so good and I loved it's not your typical Vietnamese restaurant, they have a modern twist about them. Adds lots of proteins to your meal. I'm definitely coming back again. But there's been a consistent decrease in the quantity of meat for weeks. Yesterday's sandwich had less than half the original's, and the remaining ingredients were sad, limp, and overseasoned. I visited when they first opened and was unimpressed, so I didn't write a review. I remember being fairly disappointed with my cha gio, pho ga, and the customer service. And even more disappointed because overall, I enjoy anything from Happy Endings Hospitality. So my first experience was surprising. However, I've been ordering the magnum rolls (huge goi cuon) for delivery and loving them. Makes sense since Roll Play is my favorite of the group. The magnum rolls are fresh, huge, and delicious. I do wish the staff were more conscientious though--they've arrived without sauce more than once, and that is never fun.
