I really like their pizza; it isn't amazing but it's pretty good, and it's better than many options in the surrounding areas. However, I hate ordering delivery. They keep raising the delivery fee, but the pizza almost always arrives practically cold. They also often overcook the pizza. (The restaurant is quite dated, and has limited seating with wasted space in stairs that go up to an order counter, while you pay at a register on the other side of the room. I was visiting my sister in NJ, far away from my home state of Texas. I have been visiting her for quite some time and have ALWAYS returned to this little pizza place in historic Maplewood. Now let me tell you something about Texas, everything is bigger in Texas and I wasn't prepared for their extra large pizza. It was the half the size of the kitchen table and more then enough for three boys under the age of 12 and plenty enough for three adults. My Texas bigger is better mentality...satisfied. For many, many years I have claimed to love this place when I only got a plain slice or the baked ziti slice... both are excellent choices, however it is only in the last few years that I have dared try another kind... and I was missing out. They have many wonderful choices... my latest obsession is the spinach slice. Some pizza places serve spinach pizza as a cheese pie with spinach gloped on in random areas, this slice is covered in spinach! Also, it is either lightly sauced or not sauced at all, so you can really enjoy the spinach and cheese!! Other good options include chicken and broccoli pizza, margarita, eggplant- mozz- and tomato on wheat, garlic knots, etc. Another odd, but delightful mention is that they have really great shaved ice for the sodas... even though I am a diet drinker... i can't resist a rootbeer soda while i wait for my pizzas. read more

It's set in the neat little downtown area off Maplewood NJ, close to the train tracks & movie theatre. Updating this because the owner called me just after the review to apologize and make amends. I was really impressed with that. We haven't had a chance to try them again yet, but we'll be giving Roman Gourmet another shot. Worst experience I've had in a while. I called to order delivery at 7:30 and was told it would be 45 minutes. The person taking my order tried to overcharge me. They then called back 20 minutes later to tell me they were out of what I ordered, so I made another choice. An hour after I ordered, it hadn't arrived, so I called back. They said it had just gone out. When I told them I wasn't inclined to order from them again and wanted them to compensate me, they offered to refund me. Two hours after I ordered, I had given up, but my husband was determined to get the food. When he called back, they said they had cancelled the order instead of refunding, meaning they had lied about it going out and despite never asking if that's what I intended with the refund. Ultimately my husband went to pick up the food to ensure we got it. Oh and apparently the refund hadn't ever been put through in the first place. We definitely won't be ordering from here again, which is a shame since the food isn't bad. read more

Amazing sauce that I'm sure must be San Marzano Tomatoes, dotted with cherry tomatoes, lots of sweet fresh moz, plenty of basil, and a hint of fruity olive oil drizzled on top. The garlic knots are beyond reproach, and the square pesto pizza is perfect. But more than the food, the atmosphere is just perfect -- exactly what I want from a neighborhood pizza joint. I have to change my rating and drop it down to 4 stars. The first time I tried this place, their margherita pizza was fantastic! However, every time I've been back, it's never been the same. Also, I've noticed that their pizzas are not very consistent in terms of thickness/thinness of crust, how crisp or the doneness of the crust, and the amount of cheese and toppings they use. Maybe it's a different guy making the pizza each time, I don't know. But it's still pretty good, just not very consistent and definitely not as good as the first time. read more

Food is good but service is weird. For example, tonight I went to pick up two sandwiches @ 6.99 each. Counterman rang them up, subtotal was 13.98, plus tax 14.96. $14.96 showed on the register. He asked me for $14.96. I handed him a $20, expecting $5.04 change. He handed me $3.55. No idea why he ripped me off for $1.50, I guess he just felt entitled to a 10% tip. Maybe over the course of the evening short-changing customers comes out to decent beer money. But still kind of weird. On other occasions, when we phoned in orders after 8:30 PM, they told us they could not take the order because they were out of bread or because they had already turned off the oven an hour before closing. here Seems like management needs to supervise staff here a little more closely. read more

Ya know...when I'm back visiting in the Maplehood, I always always grab me a slice from ye olde Grommet, as we sometimes referred to it back in the day. I still remember walking by seeing my guitar buddy Bob Sharkey in the window, working for Tony tossing pies. As much as we badgered dearest Bob long after he departed the area, he would not divulge any aspect of the secret recipe that makes Roman Gourmet's pizza so special. The proprietary mix of herbs in the sauce was one thing, but I chalk it up to fresh ingredients and exceptionally tasty thin crust. i always used to order vegan pies from here since they were the only place that did it. when i ordered today i got my vegan pie without the vegan cheese. when i has called back, they said that their vegan pie comes without cheese when i had gotten it many times before with the substitute cheese. they also should've have mentioned if they were not putting the vegan cheese before i wasted $30 on a small pie.
