I was not as impressed with Roman Gourmet as I hoped to be. I had two slices of pizza and thought it was run-of-the mill. My friend had a salad and the antipasto platter and she said it was good. Eating in was not a comfortable experience for me. The whole place was poorly lit. It was very cramped and crowded the evening that we went, and the whole counter area was messy and cluttered. The floors and bathroom looked old and shabby. The staff was having trouble keeping up with everyone's orders, and while the server brought my friend the food she had ordered, she forgot my friend's drink and she didn't bring me my slices. After some time I noticed that two slices had been sitting on the counter, ignored, so I waited back on line behind customers who were ordering in order to ask if those were my pieces of pizza. The man said that they were so I took them. Meanwhile other slices of pizza were being taken out of the oven and runners were bringing them to seated customers. A subsequent order about a month later was very poor. The pizza arrived very quickly in about 15 minutes and (as I assumed when it arrived impossibly fast) was vastly undercooked (was requested well done). It definitely effected how I felt about ordering delivery again. Going make this about a 3.5 stars for me until I can test consistency again. Still an adequate family owned establishment but nobody (food delivery) is perfect I suppose. read more

I've been ordering pizza from them for delivery for some time now. The pizza has always been great, the delivery is always prompt and the prices are reasonable. However, apparently they do not use pizza warmers when delivering pizza. Tonight was the second time they delivered the pizza with no warmer. The pizza was stone cold, and we had to re-heat it. I don't think I'll order from them again, at least until the Spring. read more

First time in a new town, see some good reviews and we try it. Margherita pizza was really good, also tried the volcano with spinach, which was a different way of making a calzone. Interesting idea and tasted good also, only negative Mark was that it was just above room temperature which kind of takes away from the flavour. I know, i know, covid19 and all and I appreciate that there are deliveries. Just a little hotter, or maybe next time i do a takeout. Had 2 pizzas here on a really busy Friday night: : margherita pizza, and a half veggie/half plain pie . First, the margherita : Wow! Great thin crust, basil, olive oil , thinly sliced fresh mozzarella cheese, and an outstanding sauce made from special tomatoes imported from Italy.(according to the owner) Best margherita pie I ever had! The other pie was good, but not as amazing as the margherita. Despite a very busy night, the service (no waiters, you order at the counter and they bring your food to you, or call you up) was excellent. Good selection of esoteric beverages as well. Ah...the Roman Gourmet has been a favorite of our family for years. So maybe ch so that we often stocked up on pies to ferry up to Connecticut to assuage our cravings. We came here because of the great reviews, we were very disappointed. First of all, we asked for a Nonna's pie. What we got? A margherita pie. Grandmas pizza is not the same as a margherita pizza. For one thing, grandma's pizza is supposed to be rectangular. Even if it was rectangular, the crust was awful. I seriously cannot believe people like this crust, it was not thin, not flavorful, and I have had much much better crust. From Pizzatoday.com: "The original pizza Margherita, still served all over Naples today, consists of crushed tomatoes, fresh basil and fresh mozzarella. Grandma's pizza- rectangular pies baked in cookie sheets. Enjoyable pizza place in Maplewood Village. Staff is always super friendly. Pizza is good. As are the sandwiches. I love the square pieces with pesto and mozzarella cheese. They make a terrific grilled vegetable salad!! Only complaint is when we were eating in an employee was spraying cleaner on other tables and it was directed towards our table so I'm sure some of the cleaner got on our food. This is my go-to spot in Maplewood for specialty pizza slices. The owner Vinnie and his family and great people that make you feel welcomed every time. The stuffed ziti slice, the eggplant spinach slice, their whole wheat and arugula slices are always delicious! Their Sicilian slices are always a hit with my family too. One of my favorite things about this pizza place is the sauce-slightly acidic, clean and tomato-y, but also very subtlety sweet. BUT they just changed it!! Placed an order today at 4:55 through the website for delivery. App showed "On the Way" around 5:45. I called the restaurant in which I was placed on hold and spoke to two different people. The second person told me part of my order was complete and that some tickets went missing and the pizza pie was in the oven still but that as soon as its ready they will come deliver it. 20 minutes passed and something told me to call back, a young lady then informed me that they are waiting for the delivery driver. so i decided to go pick up my order instead. i get to the restaurant and of course a long line for pick up. I proceeded to go towards the back where the delivery orders were being placed, i asked the delivery guy if my order was there because i did not want him to leave out with it, I then asked the girl taking phone orders if she has my order since afterall i was speaking to her a few minutes prior, thinking maybe i can just be in and out...nope i continued to wait on this line and finally in my hands at 7:15pm is my order, best part no apologies and the owner was behind the counter. this is just unacceptable. read more

Wish I could give this place 4.5 stars. It's probably the best New York style pizza around the Maplewood, Millburn, Springfield, & South Orange area. I haven't had anything but their pizza, so I'll only comment on that. Their sausage pie is amazing, and always seems fresh and tasty. It has just the right amount of crisp to cheese to topping ratio. Their white spinach pie is also pretty excellent. If nothing else, get a plain slice, and enjoy. The only other pizza place that comes close to this one for me is the Village Trattoria in South Orange. I find their slices to be just a bit fresher, and prefer their buffalo chicken slice to Roman Gourmet's. But their service doesn't compare. Roman Gourmet still has that townie feeling where the guys behind the counter will quickly remember you, what you like, etc. Plus, they are super gay friendly, which always is a huge plus in my book. read more

I used to walk here after school when I was at Maplewood MIdlde School. Then even when I was at Columbia we would come here for lunch most days. It has been at least 10 years since I been back to the Roman Gourmet but as others stated I will never forget walking in and seeing Tony or his wife or Son behind the counter and sitting in one of those hard red booths with 2 slices of cheese pizza and a red or grape drink with tons of crushed ice in it. I grew up this area and started going to this restaurant in 1973. 43 years is a long time. Its not going to be 44 years. We order dinner every Friday night. Roman Gourmet has been part of the rotation. It is always significantly late and often wrong The last three times have been complete disasters. The first time , I called in an hour after the order had been placed and the person who answered the phone said they never received the order - he took the order, but somehow knew the address of the order he never received. I contacted ChowNow, who handles the online ordering, and they said that the restaurant had confirmed receipt of the order minutes after it was sent. The second time, I got a grilled chicken salad that amazingly came with no chicken - I mean, the name of the thing is "grilled chicken salad". Kind of implies chicken, no? Tonight was the final straw - placed order at 5:30, 6:30 delivery promised - call at 6:50, told order just went out - call back at 7:30 and... well.. they have no idea where the order is, can they take the order again? The owner tells the employee to apologize to me (I hear him in the background) and offer to refund the money - ok, nice gesture. Call back at 8:30 - kids are starving and getting grumpy - "just went out" (where did I hear that before??) - finally comes a few minutes before 9 and NO PIZZA. Seriously? Deliveryman gets the owner on the phone who somehow has forgotten about the whole situation.. You know what? Just aint worth it..I'm going to find a place that actually values their customers read more
