My go to spot for chicken rice in SF. I used to come here all the time when I lived in the city, and it is still just as good. The portions are always generous, and everything is consistently fresh and clean. The space is spacious, pickup is quick, and the ordering process is simple and easy. We came for dinner after 6:00 and all the restaurants were pretty much winding down for the night. I ordered 2 of the Originals with chicken breasts: The Pros-the chicken was tender and the sauces were tasty (I had the ginger scallion and the KMG, which is made from chili, ginger, garlic, and soy) The Cons-even thought it was still almost an hour till closing time, all the chairs were already stacked on the tables. I guess they had already stated cleaning because I could smell the strong chemical fumes of cleaning solution. The worse part was that some grains of rice were crunchy. This place was ok. We got chicken spring rolls and three Hainan chicken rices - two '"riceless" and one "original". The chicken in the Hainan rice was definitely decent, of solid quality. Portion sizes were generous, which is always a plus. However, the rice was just okay, nothing special, and the chicken soup was pretty bland. We thought the '"riceless" option was the better deal. They load you up with extra broccoli to replace the rice, which is fantastic if you're looking for more fiber and vegetables. We had the chicken spring roll with three hainan chicken rices, where two were "the riceless" and one was "the original" hainan chicken rice: the chicken was solid, rice was okay. Today as I was walking home, I saw Rooster and Rice. Haven't been here since 2020. They added a mini portion along with salads and wraps or rolls. I ordered a mini and it was a great portion. The service was quick as I went in after 3pm. I did pay for the ginger sauce but when I came home, it wasn't in my bag. Chicken was tender and the house dressing. Ambiance is clean and modern. Honestly, incredibly surprised by this. I've had Chicken rice at franchise locations before and they have always been hit or miss. But I love chicken rice So when I was working downtown and saw this place on Uber eats, I was determined. Since this was delivered I can't really speak to the service or ambiance, but I can say that it arrived promptly. I got the original chicken breast, with an egg and tofu. The egg comes runny, which I know can be a deterrent for some, but I love it. The tofu on the other hand was a little plain. Having lived in Asia I was sort of expecting the smoked soy sauce tofu that usually comes with Chicken rice. However the star of the show is the chicken. It can often be dry, especially if it's being delivered, but it was still moist by the time it arrived. Side note their KMG sauce is amazing and pairs perfectly with just about everything. read more

I love Hainan chicken rice! They're such a staple food in Singapore and Malaysia & Any big cities in Indonesia. Even though it's very difficult to find any Singaporean, Indonesian and Malaysian restaurants in SF, At least there are many Thai restaurants in the city that serves up their own version of Hainan Chicken rice which in Thai known as Khao Mun Gai. They are the same thing, just different name and the only differences are the sauces that comes with the dish. The big difference is in the accompanying dipping sauce. Hainan chicken rice is served with a trio of sauces: ginger, chilli and sweetened soy sauce. And the chicken skin usually more oily in Singapore and Malaysia (which I love). Rooster & Rice is a Thai style. But regardless of what kind of chicken rice you like, Rooster & Rice the original menu will do the job just fine. Until someday when you're going back to Singapore, Indonesia or Malaysia. I can't wait to go to Tian Tian Hainanese chicken rice in Singapore myself. read more

Decided to try a new spot. The food is very good. Fast and nice service. Price is reasonable. No frills restaurant.

The chicken was tasteless. Cooked well but tasteless. The rest it actually full with flavour. Everything tasted very fresh. My favourite part is the sauce, king sauce I believe it was called and that complimented the chicken very well. The mix of the rice and the cucumber salad vinaigrette was very nice and gave it a fresh feeling. The broth is so clear and flavourful, that I almost clutched to my pearls. I added rice and chicken to the broth and made a small soup which was like a nice little extra treat. I went for the original plate. There's only 4 visible menu items available. The place is very odd. Tables were everywhere and the the place a bit too dirty. The decor is interesting, a whole bunch of San Francisco landmarks with a plethora of loud colours. One orders first and a number is given. Wait time was acceptable. Water is complimentary. I just don't feel it's worth the price at a nearly 20$ a plate. Montgomery BART station is the nearest along with the MUNI light rail and other downtown locations. MUNI buses 8, 8AX, 8BX, 30, 38, 38R, 45, 91 pass nearby. read more

We stayed at the Hyatt down the street for the SF marathon last year in July. We wanted something simple to eat because we had a toddler and a child along with 3 adults. The chicken and rice was really good, flavorful with the sauce and the chicken was juicy and soft. The cucumbers were good and the menu of very simple. If you're looking for some home cooked and simple meal, this is a great in and out spot. Service was quick and the staff were very friendly. How can something so simple taste this good? This is my first time trying Khao Mun Gai! I've always been so hesitant to try it because I feel like it's so overhyped but now that I've had it, I fully understand what people are saying. This spot is in the Financial District in SF. Our hotel was just across the street. When I walked by this place, I felt compelled to try it at least once. I just got the original and boy it was so good! I tried the chicken without the sauce first and it's so flavorful! Then I tried it with the sauce, and I just went to umami and flavor heaven! The rice was also delicious from the broth, but it wasn't soggy or overwhelming. This is the kind of dish that I could eat every single day without feeling guilty or too heavy. This might be one of my favorite dishes ever! This place seems to be meant for people to have a quick lunch then go. Not really one of those where you would expect stellar service or to be aesthetically pleasing. I'm ok with that! The chicken was tender and moist - it sort of reminded us of a Korean ginseng chicken soup dish called Samgyetang. What we loved most was how "clean" everything tasted. When you're traveling, it's hard to eat clean without compromising flavour and/or novelty. However, this dish was hearty and memorable without making us feel heavy. Ordering here seems to be pretty efficient, since it only took a few minutes for us to get our food. In terms of SF pricing it is not bad for what you get, since it is a good amount of food for the price even if it doesn't look like it at first. I decided to just get the Original when I ate here, which includes the chicken, rice, some veggies, and a chicken broth soup. There also are an assortment of sauces you can get along with it, like thai sriracha and habanero. The chicken is tender and although it is not very flavorful, it does go well with the sauces that are included. I really enjoyed the chicken broth that came along with it, since that was extremely flavorful unlike the chicken and is something I would definitely drink again. The chicken is tender and moist and packs a strong juicy punch with each bite - the best part being the fatty chicken skin atop. When I came I got the Original which was on the pricy side costing roughly $15.50 for the chicken and rice. That being said, the rice was also as flavorful as the chicken and tasted as though it had been cooked in a fatty chicken stock. The original is also served with a side of warm chicken broth with little bits of cilantro and two side sauces: Thai sriracha and habanero which add depth and just the right amount of spice to the dish. The original also comes with the main sauce which is a sweet and savory soy sauce blend that perfectly coats the chicken and adds a sweet glaze to the meat.
