Love this West Chester gem! I don't know what coffee they use, but it is literally the BEST! I love that Roots always uses the freshest ingredients, and you can tell that there is care put in to what has been prepared. There is something so cool and fun about all of the people that work there - they all seem to genuinely love it there. I've never had a server that I didn't like at Roots. Every time I visit my hometown I hope to find time to eat at Roots Cafe. I love the cozy atmosphere, great service and the yummy farm to table food. Yesterday we had a wonderful leisurely brunch there and all ordered the veggie omelet - it was delicious and healthy. (They do not fry their breakfast potatoes in grease or oil). The staff was so kind and patient with us as we had tons to catch up on. We met the owner's mom and had a great conversation. One of our guest has difficulty walking and the staff was very helpful ensuring she was safe and able to move around the restaurant. Look forward to visiting West Chester and heading to Roots again. read more

The food here is amazing! I've yet to have a bad meal at the roots cafe, the only reason the get only 4 stars is the slow and spotty service. If you go the the roots cafe you'll have a good meal for sure! Just don't be in a hurry when you go, you'll be there a while! read more

Just tried Roots for the first time today. They cook the way I eat, so it was a match made in heaven. Very hard to find restaurants with a conscience, this side of the Mississippi. We both had the huevos racheros, which had a couple of issues. One, the eggs were under-cooked. We expected soft yolks, but the whites of mine were clear and runny. I didn't want to make my friend wait while mine was sent back, so I just ate around them. Also, this dish should be served with tortillas. I'm a native of the southwest, and I've never seen them served without. We asked if they had been forgotten, but the waiter just said, "no, they don't come with that". We also had to flag down the waiter for more coffee. He brought more for my friend, but never asked if I also wanted more. Actually, he hadn't come back during the meal at all, only when we called him over, and that was when we were 1/2 way through. So, I can only give 3 stars today. I'll be back, and hopefully with a better experience. I really did want to love this place. It's beautiful inside, and out, but what I really wanted was a great meal and good service. read more

After several very good meals for both lunch and dinner I will never walk back in to this restaurant again, and here's why. Had lunch there a couple months ago and noticed they were serving beer. I asked the hostess if they had gone away from BYO and she said...sort of. I was told that the restaurant was still allowing BYO, but they were charging for corkage and it was $10 bottle. Nothing was mentioned about weekends. When I made the reservation for dinner on Saturday nite nothing was said they no longer let people bring wine on weekends. Drove 45 minutes on a really bad night and when I walked in with 2 bottles of wine I was told, sorry but can't use personal wine. There were 6 total people in the restaurant. I explained to the man that was seating people that I was never told anything when I made the reservation and would they please make an exception for 1 night. He went back and checked with the chef and I was told, NOPE. Our "new policy" was no more BYO. He also said they were updating their website to let people know. SO, the websirte doesn't say no personal wines, the hostess at lunch in December said it was still ok, yet we were told to take it or leave it. I understand that chef's are not the best people persons in the world, but I can't believe there was no give and take on a night when the place was deserted because of the weather. Must be nice to tell people to walk rather than try to work something out. Went ot Spence and had a good meal. Never go back to Roots. read more

Another dinner at my neighbors Roots! This is the first time I was not teaching and able to pick up my hubby from the firehouse and have a great meal. I love the blackboard listing of the source if your meal ingredients. Local! Chris was our waiter. Awesome as ever. Great personality and makes you feel at home. The sweet tea is so refreshing. Not overly sweet, just enough. We shared the house salad and bruschetta appetizers. Fresh fresh veggies! The kitchen accommodated our request to take the scallop app and make it out meal. They were perfectly cooked. They came on a bed of polenta with a hint of jalapeño, carmalized carrots and another side that had a sweetness of cheese, apricots -very creamy. The food came quickly. We hadn't even finished the salad! Awesome! We shared a fantastic chocolate cake baked by Yori's . There is nothing better than a homemade cake. Rich chocolate and super moist. So happy they are across from the studio! I really enjoyed the fresh, local fare from my neighbors! read more

No stars. Wife and daughter went here for breakfast on 12/16/14. Later that morning- afternoon, my wife got sick.....violently. I called to inquire if anyone else called to complain about getting sick and I was told " no other complaints but I'll talk to the executive chef and call you back". Still waiting for a response. Love this place! It's a treat to meet a friend for Breakfast and this is always my choice. I love that the food placed in front of me is all sourced locally. The decor is pleasant and comfortable with local artists' displaying their work on the walls. The staff is always pleasant and very accommodating. My wife and I recently went for a night out. We had only eaten once at Roots, for breakfast when it was in its last location. The restaurant is small but not cramped and there is an outside area although we ate inside. I ordered the four course menu since you can pick what you want and my wife had the scallops. They list the area markets/shops that they get their food from and t=it is an impressive list. My kale salad with anchovies was outstanding. I'm not big on kale but this was small and lite almost like lettuce. The cheese board had three types of cheese with garnishes and everything was great. My main course was a duck carbonarra and it was delicious with a tremendous sauce. My wife's scallops were also great, seared just right with another great sauce. We shared a bread pudding with goat cheese ice cream for dessert and it was as different and delicious as it sounds. Overall a great meal, and the next time we return we will bring some friends. read more

I have to admit that the food I ordered was delicious and everyone at my table enjoyed their meals. I ordered the snapper which came with a very unique rice and a very tasty combination of radicchio lettuce and goat cheese. I also had a fish stew as an appetizer which was equally as delicious My issues are the seating was terribly uncomfortable. There were all hard wood benches and chairs. If the wait to get out food was not so long this may have not been an issue, but it was 45 minutes to an hour before we got our food.There were 8 of us at the table. They seemed to run out of everything. One woman at our table asked for a bowl of the fish soup as opposed to the cup, but they were out of the bowls. They just put a little extra in her serving. She sent it back because she would have gotten charged more for a half scoop of extra soup. It should have been the same price because it was their mistake. This was not at our table, but someone had ordered duck and they had run out. Another person wanted the peach pie for dessert and again they were out so the waitress recommended gelato instead. Can you guess what happened next...yes, they were out of that too!!!! It was Friday Night they are in the restaurant business. Is there no plan as to how much people order? Last but not least....waitstaff please NEVER refer to your patrons as hun or sweetheart especially if they are old enough to be your parents or grandparents. That is how everyone at our table was addressed over and over again when they made their orders or had special requests. It just made me cringe. Eh..ok! Kinda busy whenever you go so there is hardly any room to sit. And the quality of food, albeit fresh, is borderline bland.

I was recommended this place by a work buddy and was very pleased! I took my best friend here for her birthday and it's small but has a good atmosphere. Our waitress was nice . She recommended the pork Benedict and it was a great recommendation. I loved it and my friend and boyfriend seemed to like their breakfast burritos although they looked more like wraps to me. Tonight was my first time at Roots. I came with a friend and we were blown away. The outside eating in the garden is absolutely adorable. The staff was so friendly and attentive and the food was beyond compare. We split the pesto mozzarella Flatbread and both ordered white sangria and the red snapper. The cocktails were strong and delicious. The snapper was blackened to perfection and so delicious we both cleared our plates! We will definitely be back and 100% recommend. read more

Most overrated place ever, got the turkey burger and "chicken corn chowder" that was just chicken noodle soup -_-. Was not impressed with the food at all and in my opinion overpriced. Though the seating areas are well decorated and there was good service the food was sub par. Would not recommend. read more

I just like the organic/local idea but the food is pretty average. I didnt get the same healthy thing i got before bc it wasnt that good and i was jealous of french toast so thats what i got. Roots is a great brunch place. Period. Do not waste your time and money on an evening out dining here. We just walked out and were so disappointed with everything, from the the ambiance to the food. We were jammed in between two other tables and you could hear everyone's conversation even if they weren't speaking loudly. We ordered a spinach salad which came with minuscule components and no bleu cheese. I ordered the lamb chops rare to medium rare and they were well done, which of course, tastes gamey. My husband ordered the ravioli with goat cheese and fig with a squash preparation as the sauce--it was like mush. I wanted to return both, but my husband said we would just eat it, leave and never return. We actually had reservations elsewhere this evening and I changed them so we could try this--what a mistake. We will be back at Mistral or Majolica next time. And thank goodness for Dairy Queen and the always yummy Peanut Buster Parfait--that elevated the food level for the evening. read more

Amazing place! The ambiance is perfect and the way the restaurant is laid out make it feel so welcoming. Then of course there is the great food. We went for dinner. I love that they source many ingredients locally and serve seasonal dishes. Apparently they're known more for their breakfast/brunch so I will definitely be making a return trip to check that out.
