O M G, this place is amazing. I am not even exaggerating. I was finally able to get an order in after setting an alarm at 5PM and trying meticulously for weeks BUT It was much worth the wait! With the whole COVID situation, it has been tough for a lot of businesses so I think people need to be more kind and lenient on how they're operating. I ordered maybe half of the items that were on the menu: the rose ave special, ube japanese cheesecake, ube brioche rolls, and another coconut mochi ball. LET ME TELL YOU, this ube butter that comes with the brioche rolls is a game changer. The rolls and butter just melts in your mouth. Also the coconut mochi balls and donuts are to die for. These are flavors that you dont see in a normal bakery so the different flavors explode in your mouth (in a good way). I dont think I have been this excited to try items from a bakery and cant wait to order more items in the future! Highly recommend this place and you wont regret one bite. As D.C. sorely lacks in Asian American bakeries, I've always been a proponent for Asian baked goods in the city. Rose Ave Bakery is helping to fill this void. Owner Rose Nguyen has previously worked in several D.C. institutions, such as Toki, Maketto, Ice Cream Jubilee, Mr. Holmes Bakehouse - all while keeping up with her primary occupation of nursing (#healthcareheroes). Rose Ave Bakery is one of the vendors of DC's The Block Foodhall, which offers various Asian eateries (there is a The Block Foodhall in Annandale and one in Bethesda). Despite COVID-19, Rose and Rose Ave Bakery are still hard at work to sell half of the usual 17-item menu. Rose prepares every single pastry herself. They are only open for preorder pickup on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 1:30pm. There is a preorder link on their website that's refreshed on Sundays at 5pm. First-come, first-serve, so be sure to go online precisely at 5pm because pastries will sell out quickly! Last Sunday, I was able to order: + Strawberry rose lychee donuts ($4.25 each) + Yuzu Japanese cheesecakes ($4.50 each) + Matcha chocolate chunk cookies ($3 each) I was meeting up with a friend, who ordered the Rose Ave Special ($26.25) for us to share. The Rose Ave Special is a box of seven items (1 strawberry rose lychee donut, 1 pandan coconut donut, 1 passionfruit donut, 1 Saigon cinnamon apple pie donut, 1 coconut mochi puff, and 2 matcha chocolate cookies). When we picked up our orders, we decided to try a couple of items. We tried the passionfruit donut, matcha chocolate cookie, and coconut mochi puffs. I liked the passionfruit donut and the coconut mochi puffs. The passionfruit curd was so tasty. The donut is dusted in raspberry sugar and has a rose petal garnish, a lovely combination of sweet and tangy. The coconut mochi puffs were crispy on the outside and soft and chewy inside. The coconut caramel glaze was delicious. I was not as keen on the matcha chocolate cookie, which was disappointing for me because I love matcha. Overall, it's a good cookie but the chocolate was way more pronounced than the matcha. I personally felt that I was eating a chocolate chip cookie rather than a matcha chocolate cookie. Overall, Rose Ave Bakery has some fantastic unique flavors. I'm keen to try more of their baked goods. I'm very impressed by the owner's one-woman production and her dedication and compassion for others (she made meals to donate to So Others May Eat and organized deliveries to Children's National Medical Center). Separating my review into the GOODIES, and the ridiculous commentary from the one 1-star review: I too was on the infamous 11am line from the circuitous complaints of the one star reviewer. But-- the two week wait was because of local protests making the prior week impossible (and Rose Ave then donated 25% of sales that week to BLM), and the line was because they were accommodating two weeks worth of orders into one morning. Could it have been more organized? Yes. Could most things be more organized during a global pandemic happening in the midst of civil rights crisis while also the climate crumbles around us? Also yes. I say to ye, amateur sweets food critic: give the women behind this small business a dang break. It's not a great look. That said, what a unique and interesting place! I had the cacio e pepe biscuits, the coconut mochi balls, the s'mores donut, and the matcha chocolate chip cookies. Gosh, I don't even know where to start. Rose Ave is without a doubt the best bakery I've tried in DC, and possibly one of the best bakeries I've tried... ever. I've probably owed Rose Avenue a review since the first day I went in. I kept thinking I would make it up to Maryland and then they magically moved in down the street from me. Everything I was looking forward to trying is exactly as expected. The owner, Rosie, is a former nurse who spent the first few months of her move to DC making meals for medical workers, during the pandemic response. She has been a thoughtful addition to the community here and a solid ally. Also the food is just so good... i used to have to trek out to Maryland or even New York for interesting Asian baked goods like this. Matcha chocolate chip is maybe my favorite, but it's worth buying the six pack of ube rolls even if you live alone. Editing my review to talk about the order process. This business has been extremely cognizant of COVID concerns and shifted to an model of pre orders on Sunday, then the tiny team works all week to prep hundreds of orders, and pick up starts on Friday thru Saturday. Every time I have been there I've been the only one in my time slot and everything is distanced, unlike many businesses opening up. Though, there is a line that will start to form by at least 9:50am, but don't worry the line moves quickly. This bakery is located in a mini food hall. I recommend you trying one of everything. If you're disappointed by DC's lack of Asian bakeries, look no further! Rose Ave Bakery has a variety of pastries, all with those delicious Asian flavors, ranging from matcha to lychee to ube. Online preorders go live on Sunday at 5pm (this is during COVID; can't speak for how business was run B.C. - "before COVID" haha get it? okay anyways) and sell out within MINUTES. I'm not even joking, I was late once (5:07) and almost the entire site was sold out already. Set an alarm and thank me later. I've tried almost every item on the weekly rotating menu so far and I have yet to be disappointed. The passionfruit donut is definitely my favorite as there hasn't been a week that I haven't ordered it LOL. I also love the ube Japanese cheesecake, ube brioche rolls, and ube coconut cake - basically anything ube. If you live alone like me, don't be turned off by the 6 brioche rolls because you will devour them all so quickly with the creamy ube butter that goes with it. I'd recommend splitting the cake though, or waiting until Rosie brings back cake slices (hint hint!). Also if you're looking for something a little less sweet, try the matcha chocolate chunk cookie: the matcha and sea salt sprinkled on top balance out the chocolate very nicely. Or if you're looking for something a little more savory, try out the sesame scallion biscuit. Seriously, Rose Ave Bakery is the place to go for pastries. Rosie is also a super sweet human being and it's truly impressive how she's been running this one-woman show in the midst of a pandemic. So I came in for my first time today (last day in downtown location) and the first thing was the atmosphere which was very cute and clean. It would definitely be a nice place to hangout on a first date, coffee with friends, or even doing a little studying. The service was AMAZING. The line was literally out the door and I was in and out in less than 20minutes. Super happy to see an Asian-owned bakery getting a lot of attractions! I've been coming here regularly. They have a great routine selection and weekly specials. I loved everything I've tried so far. The scallion morning bun is a great savory option and resembles a scallion pancake. When I saw they come up with a halo-halo donut I just had to try. It was amazing - the ube dough was super soft and fluffy and the red bean cream inside was not too sweet and tasted very authentic. I also grabbed the Ensaymada (puff pastry with cream cheese frosting and grated cheese on top) - very good but the others were just too great. Got a bite from what my friend brought me yesterday (passionfruit kouign amann) and I had to drive there to try more (I just love pastries like that). But totally forgot that they might not have enough stock near their closing (2pm). Ended up getting whatever I could get (ube kouign amann, ensaymada bun). There still was a line when I went in 20mins before their closing. Brought it home and tossed them in airfryer (360 degrees, 5mins). TRUST ME AND PUT THEM IN THE AIRFRYER (you can thank me later). Whenever I buy pastries (mostly croissants), this is my trick, it makes it taste 1000x better (if you are all about that flakiness). I would say I liked ensaymada bun better surprisingly (sweet cream cheese, both sweet and savory). Their dough was flaky enough and each layer comes off if you put them in airfryer. All of their flavors are not too sweet, and I really like how their flavors are unique (ube, filipino-style cheese, passionfruit, etc). I've continued to order pickups from Rose Ave Bakery throughout the pandemic and have been so happy with my orders every time. The process is seamless- preorders open on Sunday for the following weekend, and you can select your pickup time. Every single thing I've ordered has been delicious, but the ube brioche rolls are a superstar and probably one of the best things I've eaten in DC. They're soft, fluffy, and come with the most delicious ube butter. I'd never tried ube before Rose Ave Bakery and now I have it every week! The menu tends to rotate, but I also really love the guava or mango hand pies. The donuts are also incredible, especially the passion fruit curd and apple with Saigon cinnamon. I am also so impressed by the owner, Rosie, who has continued to give back to the community by making baked goods and sandwiches for hospitals and those in need, putting her own business on hold for some time right after opening to do so. A decade late vs NYC but Rose Ave was definitely worth the wait Been a fan since her pop ups at the Block in Annandale and was super happy when she opened the more convenient (to me) DC location. Their soft opening was only a few days before DC shut down from COVID so I was happy that they're open again for pre-order pick ups! I have pretty much tried all her goodies and haven't found one I didn't love. The Asian flavors are so familiar yet so different! And like Asian desserts it's not overly sweet like usual baked goods which to me is perfect. My ultimate faves are the: Ube tart - one word: AMAZING Coconut mochi puffs - soo addicting! Ensaymada - soft and fluffy and just THE BEST (bonus tip: heat it up a few sec before eating) Matcha chocolate chip cookie - perfectly soft, sweet with a hint of salt Donuts - really light, fluffy and soft texture Mochi donuts - have that perfect mochi texture with crunch Can't really go wrong with any of them. My friend brought a box of desserts from Rose Ave Bakery to a birthday picnic for a mutual friend. I was very close to not going and just staying in, but this is one of the reasons why I'm grateful I have friends that drag me outside my house: I now know this bakery exists and will be frequenting it whenever I'm in the area! I usually say I'm not big on desserts because 1)certain flavors can be redundant and 2)if the sweetness level isn't just right, the whole dessert is ruined for me. The concept of Rose Ave Bakery is one that I have a lot of respect for: drawing on traditional Asian flavors to elevate and create unique desserts for a population that may not originally be familiar with those flavors (one of the people at our picnic had never tried pandan before, but she loved it and now I'm assuming won't shy away from trying the flavor at other restaurants/stores). We tried a variety of the donuts, croissants, and cookies at our picnic, but these were some of my favorites: -Strawberry Lychee Rose donut: not only was this one delicious, the impeccable presentation made it almost too pretty to eat! -Guava Mousse donut: guava mousse filling had the perfect amount of guava flavoring and wasn't too sweet like icing; it had more of a cream-type consistency, which I loved. -Saigon Cinnamon Banana cookie: this was like biting into a slice of freshly made banana bread. Moisture and texture were just right. -Strawberry Passion Kouign Amann: one of the best desserts I've tried in my life. I still dream about the strawberry passion kouign amann- a flakey butter cake filled with strawberry compote and passion fruit curd. Each bite was delectable, made with a light, airy dough that managed to be dense enough to hold the filling inside without any of it leaking through or making the dough too oily. I came in on a Thursday morning and luckily, there was no line and full stock!! I tried almost everything, from the donuts to the other pastries that they had. It's been quite a few months since I tried it...but we tried all the donuts that were available. The black sesame was absolutely my favorite. Their scallion egg cheese and bacon sandwich was so delicious and I would definitely go back for more. The drinks were okay, I would not recommend trying the beverages. Excited to have this direly needed bakery option in DC. This was my first trip downtown in four months, for the sole purpose of Ube brioche and Vietnamese coffee. Ultimately ended up preordering almost the complete menu after four straight weeks of missing windows due to sell-outs. Selected first pick up of the day on Saturday, very limited street parking near the Marriott so tried to stay in car but queue formed even for preorders. Customers started being let in a little before 11, ended up being 10th or so in line despite getting there a half hour early. Orders are located by last name, and napkins are picked up at table where you wait for order. I would like to give a little lower than 5 stars because I prefer the pandan donuts from B-donuts, filling is very rich/thick across the board at Rose Ave, but what kind of complaint is that? They were very quick filling preorders and prepped coffee at time of pick up. Everyone was distanced, masked, excited for the simple things. I'm an hour later now and already had two ube brioche rolls (butter is sweetened) a pandan donut and the coconut mochi. Oh, plus a coffee. I may be dead and gone by the time this review posts, but it will be a happy death. And also because I made the mistake of licking donut sugar from my fingers after picking up a drink from Starbucks next door for my companion. read more

This place is hella hyped up on Instagram and I really do like how they will post if they are sold out. I made my friends wake up early to line up for these Asian American donuts on a Saturday morning. So safe to say, if you show up right at 9am like we did, you won't have to wait as long in line and you can find a spot to enjoy your goodies inside (or sit outdoors when it's nice weather). But you could still get their by 9:15 and everything is still available. We got one of each donut and some of their savory pastries. I really liked their congee bites while my friends liked their mochi bites. Their savory pastries with the egg, spam croissant were not great in our opinion. They were dry lol and the bread was lil hard. But the donuts are the real winner of this place!!! The donuts are filled with lots of cream and not too overwhelmingly sweet. I'd recommend their donuts for sure. They also sell Vietnamese coffee too and we all got the ube coffee which wasn't bad. I'd order that again. I bet going here on the weekdays the line isn't as long but if you're okay with waiting, you don't have to get their by 9am like me and my friends (esp on Saturdays). Best bakery in DC. I've been wanting to come here for months, finally made it over on my day off, and haven't stopped thinking about it ever since! Everything was so fresh, perfectly baked, not too sweet, and completely different than anything I've ever had before. My favorite was the Strawberry Lychee donut and second favorite was the Champorado Kouign Amann, but the Halo Halo donut was also great too. There was a line when k got there, but it moved quickly. I have never tried a sweet treat from Rose Ave Bakery that I didn't like! Most items are phenomenal with perfectly balanced flavors -- like the Butternut Squash Curry Tart and BBQ Pork Pineapple Buns and Triple Berry Coco Basil Donuts. The Black Sesame donuts are rich and umami and lightly sweetened. I'm not usually much of a cake person, but I make an exception for Rose Ave's passion fruit cake. It's indisputably delicious (in I once gave an extra slice to my barista, and he tracked me down to ask where it was from). I haven't tried many of the savory pastries, so I can't speak to those as much. Personally, the drinks that I've tried were not memorable and from what I remember, not great value either. The team behind Rose Ave does a fantastic job of paying homage to classic Asian flavors and nostalgic delicacies, while constantly innovating and experimenting. It's quintessentially Asian American. first time at rose ave bakery after lusting after their pastries on instagram for months and it was so worth the wait! the store itself is efficient and the staff are SO friendly - i'm very excited to visit their new storefront in woodley park once it opens! i'm not a huge donut person but would order 100 more of the coconut pandan donut, the flavors are delicate and not too sweet! the ube donut was also great but the pandan one took the cake (donut?) for me. the scallion bun was savory & onion-y and amazing! the kouign amann was also delicious but by that point i had made myself sick :) cant wait to visit again! read more

Best bakery in dc! What this bakery makes is edible art. The items are very unique and creative, beautiful to look at, and taste amazing. You can tell they put a lot of creativity and hard work in the goods they make. We just tried an assortment of the sweet items and loved everything. (The passion fruit and ube donuts and the coconut balls were my fave but really everything they make tastes incredible). They fully deserve all the awards and praise they are receiving. This has become one of my favorite bakeries in the area. I'll drive into the city during the weekends just for their baked goods. Highly recommend checking their IG to check availability. I stopped by on a busy Sunday and ordered the Vietnamese coffee, matcha cookie, ube cake slice, Asian pear Kouign Amann, passionfruit, Pandan Coconut, and black sesame donuts. If you don't plan on eating it there fresh. Definitely take it home and toss it in the toaster or air fryer. If you get the donuts they are great after you nuke them in the microwave for a few secs. The Pandan and black sesame donuts were some of the best of ever had. The Kouign Amann is like a really crispy croissant with multiple layers and a fresh jam like compote inside. Really delicious, creative and definitely my favorite. The concept here is awesome like a fusion bakery. Strong French techniques and flavors from Vietnam, Philippines and other Asian countries. I'll definitely be back to try their other signature pastries. read more

Wow! how have i not found this place sooner!!! These were amazing, my favorite was the passionfruit donut and the chocolate matcha cookie. Because of COVID, you order online at 5pm on Sunday and pick up on Saturday's. I would definitely set an alarm for 4:55 and be ready to order because they sell out fast! read more

I just went back today and tried a lot of the other items on the menu. Tried the preorder menu box and some mochi balls. The batter for the doughnuts are the same and taste soft and great flavor(tasted sweeter than the last time I visited), the filling or topping is different in each. Passionfruit Doughnut- good flavor and texture 9/10 Strawberry lychee doughnut- good doughnut not filled just topped with icing and strawberry and lychee 8/10 Pandan doughnut- I'm not a pandan fan 5/10 Guava coconut tart "danish"- I could taste the guava and coconut. Wonderful texture 9/10 Mango kouign Amani- good texture dough and the mango pieces and not enough butter in the dough 8/10 Ube mochi cruller- not a fan of the texture and sweeter than I like. 4/10 Matcha chocolate chip cookie- good texture but only chocolate flavor was coming through. 4/10 Coconut mochi puffs- I was not a fan, same texture as the ube mochi cruller. 4/10 Sichuan Cacio e Pepe Morning Bun- the flavor was spot on Parmesan and black pepper. I personally enjoyed the bake of the morning bun. 8/10 Ensaymada Cruffin- the same laminated dough as the morning bun just topped with cream cheese and cheese. 7/10. Not a traditional Ensaymada but still a fair variation. This visit was not the same expectations as my first visit but I still like the approach to baking. Everything was baked perfectly. The flavors were not my favorites. I think this is a situation of the menu changing and certain weeks being better than others. Keep up the amazing work Rose Ave. I plan to be back but maybe in a month or two. read more
