It's surprising I haven't yet morphed into a giant mozzarella ball with the amount of Italian I consume. Hubs and I made a visit to the original Rosebud recently and it was oh-so-yum-o. The restaurant atmosphere is dark and cozy and the food, oh, the food! We started with the house salads and I ordered the baked ziti (on special that night) and the hubs went traditional with spaghetti and meatballs. Both dishes were served piping hot, the sauce was amazing and the Italian sausage in my ziti was awesome. I even had enough left over after stuffing myself, to have dinner the next night. When i went here, the place was packed. As i gazed around the room, it was an eclectic bunch of people. Tourists, families, dates, older children rounded out the bunch. I was sat promptly. Their twist on the calamari app. was dynamite. I ordered a clam dish. As I always do when I order out. It was good. It has been awhile since I had eaten there and i have a warm memory of the evening. But nothing stands out in my mind as the best food I've ever eaten. Its good. But i wouldn't expect anything less from a place in little Italy. I'm sure I'll eat here again sometime in my food life. I have been to this locaion maybe 5 times before I chose to write this review. We were on a business dinner with some folks from out of town, and I was disappointed with this place as I know Chicago has better tasting food than it was this past Friday night.I know this place is an institution in Little Italy, but the veal special I had this past Friday night was OK at best. I would have been more upset if I had had to pay for it myself. The portion was plentiful. The appetizers were good. We had stuffed mushrooms, calamari fried, and grilled-both good. The eggplant salad appetizer was real good. Service was real good. Bread very good as well as the olive oil they served it with. Meeting an old friend for lunch it has become our thing to meet on Taylor St. Neither of us had been to Rosebud before and both had heard good things so why not. The hostess was amazingly friendly and was most of the wait staff. Our waitress left something to be desired but over all the service was good. The dining room is beyond dim..almost dark which really is fine with me. The lunch menu is simple all my Italian favorites after about 10 minutes of going back and forth I finally decided on the rigatoni with vodka creme sauce. For it being lunch time I was surprised at how long the wait was for pasta about 35 minutes and that was after waiting 20 minutes for the waitress to take our order. The pasta was so good! Portion size was good as well. I have about half left to have for lunch today. If you are in a hurry I recommend trying another place but if you have the time Rosebud is the place to go! My love for Rosebud restaurants dates back to my childhood. However, The Rosebud is the best out of all of them. The Rosebud is the original and the service here almost rivals the food. In all honesty I've ordered the same dish for the last 2 years consecutively and they have yet to miss a beat. Ok... For decades I've been told this is great spot... However, I'll never be back. Here's why. The bread was good, the service was good and the menu options looked great and so did some of the food I saw coming out to other tables. I thought it's been here forever so they must know what's up. Ordered fried calamari. Simple right? Nope. It was under fried and bland. That wasn't the worst to come. The spaghetti my other guests ordered was bland too. I ordered linguini with clams in garlic white wine sauce. Key word here is, sauce. They brought it out and it was a linguini with clam soup. I'm not even exaggerating. I even forced myself to take ONE bite, gross! That wasn't a SAUCE, it was a bland broth! I can't believe they allowed that out of the kitchen. Thankfully, service was good so they took away right away and removed it from the check. Later that night the calamari made my stomach pay a hefty price. Never again Rosebud. You failed me. I was here for a reservation for a large group that was booked well in advance and everything that was wrong would have been better if they provided us with a second waitress for such a large group. Drinks didn't get refilled, some drinks were forgotten, we had to ask for butter for the bread and it came a half hour later. Some food was lukewarm and the wait time was long but I assumed that was because of dish variety. Maybe these things are super picky but when you pay for the prices you do at rosebud... Rosebud is amazing! Some of the best Italian food we have ever had! It's an old school restaurant that has obviously been around for forever. We ordered the veal parm chop, a side of meatballs and the arribiata. Everything was incredible, they tailored the meal to my dietary restrictions and were happy to do so. The Rosebud is a a go to for me when I am ordering food. The Caesar salad is one of my favorites. I have had the meatball salad as well very big, super filling, definitely shareable. I love there sausage and pepper appetizers the sauce is delicious. I have gotten a few different chickens before there the lemon, vesuvio, parmigiana all have been delicious. The three stars is for the friendly waiter however, the food really deserve a 2. I ordered mushroom ravioli only to be brought ravioli covered in marinara, filled will ricotta and not a mushroom in sight. I told the waiter I was brought the wrong dish only for him to tell me that it was indeed what I ordered. "Where are the mushrooms?" I asked and he told me that they were ground within the ricotta. I pulled the ravioli apart, tasted the cheese, and found not one trace of mushroom. He argued with me that is how it is made however, in the dozens of Italian restaurants I have been to, never have I seen what they are trying to pass as mushroom ravioli. I asked for it to be sent back so I could order something else. Our waiter then became less than thrilled. I settled for fettuccine alfredo since I figured it could be quick and who can screw that up? Well a bowl of mediocre pasta and runny Alfredo sauce, I stood corrected. Oddly enough, the best dish at the table was the ribs so go figure. The ciopino for a very special 70 dollars was lacking in flavor all together and was a complete waste. Went for dinner (a monday night) with two others. I had meat ravioli, one lady had the lasagna and the other some pasta seafood that the waiter recommended. Bread as an appetizer was hard/stale and unappetizing. Lady with salad and lasagna said her food was good. Mine tasted like regular stuff - average american italian. The seafood pasta was a massive portion and the seafood was pretty bad. The bill came and the waiter had failed to mention the seafood pasta was $43! (the average serving price was $16) Waiter was bad - messed up bill twice and was basically a jerk. Overall food was totally average to below average. If the place was about 40% cheaper I'd recommend it if you weren't a connoiseur(sp?). Again, this is based on only one visit. read more

In short... Excellent service and Excellent Food!!! I was around Michigan Ave. looking for a particular restaurant, which happened to be closed and I ended up here. I sat at a nice corner table outside. My waiter was fantastic, as well as the support staff. I ordered the Chicken Marsala. AMAZING! It was two nice sized chicken breasts with a generous pile of perfectly cooked beautiful mushrooms in a marsala sauce that was like eating candy. It came with a generous side of perfectly cooked and perfectly sauced pasta. While I waited for my food the waiter brought warm rustic bread and parmesan and olive oil. This is a cozy neighborhood Italian restaurant. It was recommended by the conceirge at my hotel who said she took her family there when they came to visit, so I had a sense it would be wonderful. It has warm wood walls, candlelight and delicious food. Chicken Marsala is huge and delicious and comes wide a side of pasta. Rosebud was always my "go to" place on Taylor Street - this past week took my friend who never has been on Taylor Street and kept gushing about Rosebud - I think I talked too much???? Sat outside, very nice waiter and no issues there but the menu seemed very unimpressive as for choices. Next the portions were big but the pasta seemed a little hard and not cooked through. Lastly, I would compare the food to a step above Olive Garden as for flavor, taste etc - nothing really impressed or stood out for me, companion who never there before agreed, just an average Italian place. The hostesses were extremely polite and happy and very well organized. Our server went over the specials and sold them perfectly. I am pretty sure our entire table got one of the specials for our main entree. The food was great, the wine selection was nice. The portions were a bit large but for the price that was ok. I would not recommend visiting Rosebud without an appetite. You will be fed. We had a great dinner and will definitely go back soon. Delicious food and a fabulous traditional Italian restaurant that accommodates my fiancés huge family without batting an eye (we're talking party of 19). We discovered them while staying in the Medical District when we made our annual pilgrimage to Chicago for Lollapalooza. House wine is delicious, and the brick chicken on the bone is awesome, too. They used to be family style, but they offer individual plates now. Reasonable prices for a good Italian meal and huge portions. And I'm from Jersey so we know good Italian! Oh yes. If you are near Taylor Street, you need to eat here. The food is extraordinary. Went it comes to Italian food, I rate it by how their chicken marsala is prepared. The chicken is thick and moist. The mushrooms are freshly sliced. The sauce, oh the sauce, is tasty. You almost want more some you could dip their bread into it. The service is terrific. Attentive but not hovering. If you need anything, they are available. They are eager to correct anything you find amiss.
