The previous plumber B...left a leak that wasn't there prior to his visit....I won't write his name or go into detail with the uncomfortable experience I went through with him...but, after completing most of the work he said it would take an additional 1 1/2 -2 hrs plus $250 on top of what he already charged for a leak that wasn't there prior to his arrival.. Called Roto Rooter 12:30 am for a sewer back up. Water started coming up the drains in shower and tub. "Mike" told us a tech would be out to the house between 1am and 5am. No call no one showed up. Called again at 7 am, lady on phone was concerned, and said someone would be out ASAP. At 8:30 am called again, no one avaliable to come out. So we called ARS RESUCUE ROOTER. Initially, we were really impressed with roto rooter. They came out within an hour of our call on a Saturday. The project manager, Oscar, was so well informed and helpful. He gave us his cell phone number and answered when we had follow up questions. He was able to write a job summary that our insurance company said was exactly what they needed. The job was completed satisfactorily. However, I had to call multiple times for them to come back and refill the massive hole left under our house. It looks like they stuffed a few rocks down there, then still left a huge pile of rocks and dirt in our yard. I have called no less than 6 times to ask if this could be removed. I'm typically told someone will call back. And they never do. Last call, I was transferred to a supervisor. I explained the situation. He told me it was already taken care of and condescendingly asked if I was sure I didn't just have a possum digging. Yes... I'm pretty sure the 5ft x 7 ft pile with a tarp over it was not the work of a possum. My husband called... same treatment. This is outrageous. The emergency was taken care of, but we've had no follow up on a multi-thousand dollar job. I just don't understand why this is an issue. read more

Had to have them come out on the weekend to clear a clogged kitchen sink. I'd give 5 stars to the tech that came out. Helpful, nice, cleaned up after himself and did a good job. I'd give -3 for the company. Unethical. Won't give standard pricing on phone because the tech has to assess the job, but tech gives "standard" $350 quote for drain clearing without assessing anything. Way overpriced. And I told him this was a) out of line with other quotes I'd received and b) had I known that was the price, I'd not have used them, and I should have been given this quote over the phone, since it was clearly a set price. David(tech # 1506)was a real lifesaver.He came out on a Sunday and immediately established the problem as a a leaking galvanized pipe.I was very impressed by his knowledge of all things having to do with plumbing as well as by his friendly personality.He promised that he would be out the next day to fixate problem(in spite of a tight schedule)and was as good as his word.The pipe was difficult to get to and involved much digging in a front bed of plants as well as having to go under the sub-basement.He and his helper were here until almost dark, working all the time.I will definitely ask for David again whenever a plumbing problem comes up of this nature! read more

Overall, I am happy with the service at Roto-Rooter. The technicians are all very professional and friendly and happy to answer all of your questions. They not only fixed the blockage in the pipe, but also did some preventative treatments to keep problems from happening in the future and sent a camera down to see if there were any other problems. The first time we used them they were able to come out very quickly. The second time we ran into an issue around 9:30pm on a weekend and they came early the next morning. They seem to be one of the few plumbers in the Austin area that is open 24/7 and does not charge extra for holidays or weekends. Elusive about pricing...yes , most companies are. However the pricing is about average and I found them through a link on the web that offered coupons for their services which cut my cost. Once the tech promptly arrived, he serviced my water heater(annual maintenance) and charged me accordingly. I was not able to watch him , so I was not sure about the condition of the tank ( 10 yrs old ). He was very honest and knowledgeable about all the questions I had about water tanks.Typically its time to think about tank replacement after ten years. He didn't try to play me for more parts , or suggest a new tank and installment.He went on to say without a doubt I had at least another 3 -5 yrs before I needed to consider replacement. My service man arrived in less than one hour after I called on a late Saturday afternoon. He was professional and clear at every step in the process. He made it clear from the start how much each step would cost before we decided together which action to take -- and that there was no guarantee that the step would fix the problem. We had a clog in the main plumbing somewhere in the middle of the house. He was able to locate the clog with his camera -- but it was so deep into the house he could not guarantee it could be reached with the tool -- that the tool could spin up into a toilet or take a different route. In the end, after two attempts, he was able to reach the clog and get it cleared. Our house was completely shut down -- all sinks and toilets were clogged. He was our hero that day as we had out-of-town guests staying with us. The company and the service man did everything they said they would do -- quickly and clearly. I've used Roto-Rooter a few times now for various services and while I would be the first to agree they were a bit pricey, the service I received in my mind was well worth it each and every single time. This time my water softener had decided to spit resin into my water line and systematically clog everything as I later learned but prior to that I could only assume what the issue was and with plumbing issues, it isn't wise to sit around and wait. Roto-Rooter was quick to respond, get me an appointment and get someone out. Lenny who showed up confirmed the issue, gave me the price and after I agreed got straight to work, even testing to make sure after that it was good to go. Lenny also proved some insight and tips as to the situation and how to best avoid it in the future. Sure, I could have called around and I might have been able to get a lower price but I doubt it would have been quite as expedient. My main drain was clogged. I had an independent plumber come to my house who worked with an electric auger for an 1 1/2 hours and couldn't unclog the drain. I called Roto Rooter, which had a far more powerful auger than the previous plumber had, and it was unclogged in less than 15 minutes and at a reasonable price. They would get zero ratings if I could. I called them at 9pm for an emergency plumbing situation. They said someone would be here by 11. At 11:20 they called me to tell me that I can either wait indefinitely b/c the tech is busy or schedule for morning. I explained to this guy the urgency of the situation. He said I didn't explain it properly to dispatch (I had 2 people here saying I described it the exact same). He said he can't tell me when the person will get here. I called another company, the guy was here in 30 minutes. If you cannot handle after hours emergencies, tell the customers so we can try other companies. I sat around waiting for over 2 hours. This is a really crappy way to treat people who are desperate & already paying a premium for the late hours service. On a weeknight, so the tech is still here, likely will be for another hour & if Roto Rooter has been honest, I'd be in bed now. And I have to work in the morning. Fuck this company. read more

I run a business where the water flows like the Yangtze river on a stormy night. It's important to have my drains cleared to keep things going. Been only calling them for clogged drains, I do most of the work myself but sometimes it gets difficult and a jetter is needed to flush the pipes. Don't know of any other plumbing companies with a jetter. Anyways, another bonus is that they don't charge extra for weekends or night, you can usually find a coupon somewhere, especially if you've already had service with them. I should have read the reviews beforehand but I learned the hard way how frustrating RR is to work with. This started Wednesday afternoon when i had a pretty good water leak and the RR dispatcher said it qualified for expedited service. I wish i had known that expedited service meant i'd Hear from someone Friday night, shortly before midnight, 2.5 days later. For the 2.5 days before that, i called RR dispatch several times and they promised someone would arrive at various time periods and/or call, and i never heard a peep. Once I finally spoke with a plumber, we discussed the project, i shared some pictures, etc. and we agreed on a fixed price for a very specific job to be done (note their hourly rate of $225/hr, about 2.5x the going rate, as i called other companies, they just couldn't come out quickly enough). A plumber finally started working Saturday mid morning and after 3 hours had to leave, fortunately he left the job site in a way that let me turn the water back on to the house. A little over a week later he returned to finish the job, over the course of 2-3 more hours, but even after the total 6 hours of work, he did not complete the work as we had discussed, and he actually left my plumbing in a state that he previously described as very poor workmanship, something he'd never do because it won't hold up, but by then i was tired of arguing and just paid the bill. Very frustrating experience for an extremely simple leak fix, or at least it should have been. Be warned! read more

after requesting it several times, i've received the original contract i signed for the original work and quote of $4000 that the plumber and digging crew never saw. written on it are the 3 points mentioned earlier: 1. to excavate 42 feet and replace the main sewer line 2. to excavate 3 ft under the foundation and 3. to replace the 3x3ft concrete slab. the original quote of $4000 is crossed out. written on top is another quote of $3600 crossed out. then on top of that is another quote of $3300 crossed out. finally, on top of that the final quote of $3000 that Ken originally quoted me and the David finally made good on, not crossed out. the final $3000 quote has an initial next to it. none of these changes to the contract have dates. they also never crossed out the 3 ft excavation under the house as originally written up by Larry. several times during my interactions with Rotorooter over the phone, Larry, Ken and Bill have mentioned to me that my signature is on the contract for X amount of dollars (this number changed several times even AFTER Ken and I agreed on $3000). Bill in particular argued with me over the phone whether my signature was on this "new" contract that I adamantly denied signing, even seeing. what i want to point out is there are some stipulations listed on this contract and #5 says "If deviation from the work described above is required or customer requests additional or different work be performed, the parties will agree on an additional charge and sign a new written work description before the new work is done." and next to this line are what appear to be my initials (YY), but clearly not in my handwriting. nor do i recall initialing this point at all. I can only conclude that someone at Rotorooter forged my signature. so #1 they make changes to the work and don't draft up a new contract for me to sign violating their very own contract, and #2 someone in their office forged my signature/initials. hello Rotorooter, malpractice much? read more

These guys will screw you over. In 2011, I called them over for a simple leak. The guy they sent was nice and fixed the leak. But he broke the faucet. It would not run. So when I asked him to fix the faucet, he said it would cost $400. I said, "But the faucet worked when you got here." He agreed, but said that wasn't his problem. I tried calling the corporate office a half-dozen times, and they gave me the same response. I finally just hired another plumber, who fixed the faucet for less than $100, including parts. I gave them one star because zero is not an option. On Jan 25th I had a water heater (located in my attic) start leaking so we called Roto Rooter. They responded and three days later I had a water heater incorrectly (more on that later) installed in my attic. The guy they sent to fix my water heater claimed to have years of experience but it still took him three days to incorrectly install a tankless water heater. A water heater is not generally considered a difficult task in the realm of plumbing issues from what I have been told. So after three days the plumber and his helper both go outside of my house and turn on the water main. The result was a catastrophic flood in my house from a connection the plumber incorrectly installed.. They had to remove the ceilings upstairs and down, and all of the carpet in my house. If I had not been in the house at the time it probably would have been worse as I was the one who discovered the flooding and notified the plumber. The manager from the Austin Roto Rooter came to my house, accepted responsibility for the negligent destruction of my house and assured me they would repair the damage in a timely manner. That evening they installed drying fans and came the next day to remove my ceilings and carpet. The house was dry after a few days and the re-construction phase was set to begin. On Feb 1st we noticed a leak coming from the recently installed water heater. We contacted Roto Rooter again and a different plumber responded. He spent the entire day Saturday fixing the original installation of the water heater. On Feb 3rd, seven full days after Roto Rooter destroyed my house, the re-construction guy said he could not begin the work on my house because Roto Rooter had not obtained signatures from their insurance company yet. It has now been two days of sitting in my house, well the 10% of my house that is habitable, waiting on them to get a signature. I have called the manager and their corporate office and still no work has begun on my house. They did manage to run my credit card for the work that was incorrectly done on my house while waiting for the signature though. They all understand they are fixing my house regardless of what their insurance company decides yet they are fine with me sitting in a destroyed house while they work through their system. I remained relatively calm through this process until the process stopped. I am not one to write reviews, but I feel this one is important to the public. Roto Rooter has shown throughout this process that customer service is not one of their primary objectives and the level of incompetence, from the plumber to the management, is really incomprehensible from a nation-wide company. I will use Roto next time if I have plumbing problems. ---------------------------- We had faucet in bath still running with cold water after completely turning the knob all the way. This happened today on weekend. I called multiple plumbers. Roto scheduler promised to send one today. The guy came on time, but we were not home at that time. They forgot to call us in advance as promised. But when we called back, they sent one guy promptly. Glenn quoted $440 to fix the problem ($120 for parts, remaining for labor). As one of our neighbors got this done through different plumber for $200, after little negotiation, he agreed to do this job for $310. He seemed knowledgeable. He didn't fix it completely on first attempt. Glenn tried to leave saying that is the best he can do. The faucet was leaking if I turn it all the way, but was stopping if I stopped couple of notches away from all the way. He seemed taken back when I pressed to fix it right. Terrible. Plumber charged $340 to unclog the toilet. Put the toilet on all wobbly with scratches in the toilet bowl and in my tub. Was a total dick about it and said I needed to buy a new toilet. It took THREE visits for him to just clean the toilet bowl and get rid of the scratches and tighten it up. Waste of money. Clearly they do not care about customer satisfaction. I ask him why, this is what he tells me "I asked his guy in 2012 to do some work on side for me", Which I know I will never do. I know I ask him to do job at reasonable price but not on side.
