I was spending some time here in Grass Valley and when I see a Chinese buffet in a small town, I always just wanna see what it's like. I was surprised actually to see a buffet in this little town, but looks like Royal Dragon Buffet has been here for a lot of years and the outside shows it. The inside is sort of dated, but do you want a fancy wood trimmed track lighted buffet, or lower prices and the same food? I'll take the lower price! The selection is about the same as most mid level Chinese buffets, with all the standards available, like pot stickers, egg rolls, fried rice, sweet and sour something, and broccoli beef. There's also a sushi selection, but as with most Chinese buffets offing sushi .... I pass on that. Lunch is decent, and if I need to get filled up with standard Chinese food, this will do. Cost is about $12.00 with tax and some little tip for lunch. I think Grass Valley has some better sit down choices for lunch or even an Indian buffet, but don't shy away, still give this place a try. read more

Trash. Bathroom was nasty. Employees sitting at tables watching everyone but can't wipe anything down. The plates had spots on the top three had to dig to the fourth one before there wasn't spots on it. Bathroom was water and mold. Garbage can was missing from the wall in restroom but plastic junk sitting in the puddles in front of the door. Found metal in the food and was treated like I was dumb for almost choking on metal. The waiter who seated us was not very pleasant rude actually! Some of the dishes were cold and they had just recently opened for dinner. This used to be my favorite Chinese food restaurant after tonight I will not be back! My favorite dishes are still good but the staff just ruined it for me. The real kicker is the surcharge/gratuity of 15% added To my bill because we had 6 people. It's a buffet you are not taking my order and then serving it to me. I didnt like that you have to pay for a pot of tea for the table that was to much of you ask me never been to a buffet or restaurant were you had to pay for the tea in asian cuisine. Food was terrible. sweet and sour pork was hard like leather. Beef broccoli tasted kind of funny. Sushi was ok ok but could hardly eat it with regular soy sauce because it was so salty and they didn't have low sodium soy sauce. Six of us had dinner at the Royal Dragon Chinese restaurant at 4:30 pm. We had eaten there many times and were disappointed that the temperature of the food fluctuates so much, often barely warm but their food is so good we wanted to try it again. We had dinner September 13 around 4:30I wouldn't call the temperature of the food warm much less hot. I called the restaurant September 15 and asked to speak to the Supervisor/ manager or owner without success. I preferred that to writing my complaint to Yelp. They lost six customers who love Chinese food and that particular restaurant serves the best, because they didn't keep it warm. One last complaint. We love their fried chicken but they only offered legs. Previous They had offered different choices including white meat. I hope they make a concerted effort to keep their food hot in the future. read more

Cant believe this place has 3 1/2 stars. It is the lowest grade food Ive ever had in a restaurant. Even the hot tea and fortune cookie was super low grade. I feel like I might barf for real and Im usually not that picky. $17.50 plus tip is ridiculous!! Should cost $9.99 at most... We have avoided going here for years because we saw it as a "buffet only" restaurant, which may not have been accurate. Regardless, they have very decent choices for take out in this Covid era. And you can order online, which helps. The guy that served me seemed stressed and hurried, I'm not sure why. We had beef, fried rice, bean curd, and a seafood dish and had no complaints. Decent food, good staff, nice for a quicker sit down meal when you don't have the time for a traditional sit down meal but don't want "fast food". We have noticed timing is everything with this restaurant. Getting there right as dinner service starts gets you the freshest and hottest food. The same goes for lunch... if it's not busy , sometimes the food is only "warmish". The crab rangoon is actually the best in town, the fried chicken is an unexpected delight. The paper wrapped chicken is also a winner. There isn't anything they serve that isn't tasty, but like I said before timing is everything... if something you want is almost gone... wait and grab it next go round, as they will surely be replacing it with a hot and fresh batch by the time you are ready for your next plate. read more

I have dreams about Royal Dragon II. I miss living in Grass Valley for many reasons...but, this is a big one. Very clean, good variety, cheap cheap cheap for lunch. I love that they are super attentive when clearing plates and refilling drinks. Dessert is either pudding, jello, fruit, sherbet or chocolate/vanilla ice cream. This is my favorite Chinese Buffet. They have the best egg foo yung of any Chinese buffet. Their egg foo yung is not greasy like all the other Chinese buffets who probably all deep fry them. I have lots of favorite dishes here but at the top of my list is their seafood dish with shrimp, fish, and vegetables. They have a very nice salad bar also, and I love my salads because everyone wants to be healthy. This is one of the few Chinese salad bars where you'll find alfalfa sprouts. Yes, sprouts are very very healthy. The Sushi Bar is great too. They even serve raw salmon for both lunch and dinner, and they serve raw salmon without white rice just like in China. Be sure and try their Jian Kangde soup bar too. I wish I could get their recipe for their coconut shrimp...yum yum! I love that they don't charge extra for hot tea, and Oolong tea is really healthy! When it's time for dessert, they have real ice cream and not machine ice cream like most Chinese buffets. The staff is great too. If you want to eat a very healthy meal, you'll really enjoy this buffet. read more

It's pretty good food and it's gotten better over the years. The crab cream cheese puffs are by far the best anywhere! I usually load my plate up with those fried goodies. I also like the self scoop ice cream. I would stay away from the sushi though. I'm not a fan of that.... It's usually pretty gross tasting but so is the story of all sushi that comes from a buffet. I love Royal Dragon! Its the opposite of trendy or upscale. It is a local, cozy, friendly, funky buffet. The decor is old and faded with vinyl booths and plastic plants, the bathrooms are dark and scary, the staff is super friendly and the service is excellent. This is the place to go for a huge family dinner without reservations, even though they get packed in there they can always accommodate you. Its very casual- Royal Dragon is the kind of place where you show up in your sweatpants and head over to shop at Kmart after you eat. The food ranges from "eat at your own risk" (the sushi is sketchy and I got a moldy dinner roll once) to some of the best Chinese buffet food to be found (the crab puffs, shrimp with chiles, and brandy fried chicken). They also have a decent salad and desert bar. Royal Dragon will always be among my favorite home town restaurants. read more

I had read in an earlier review that they had a mediocre selection of sushi. However, I beg to disagree. I probably ate about 3 rolls worth of Cali, Super-ish Cali (cali+ avo & salmon on top), roe Cali...the list goes on. Had some orange chicken. Meh. Not into greasy stuff. Their Chinese selection, oddly enough, was less appetizing to me than the sushi/seafood and desserts. Lunch buffet comes up to $8.15. $10 out the door with a generous tip (because, c'mon, I know these old folks aren't tipping for the great service!) Great place to go if you want to overdoes on sushi, clog your arteries with greasy Chinese, or succumb to a sugar coma. I have been going here for years and never had anything bad to say until today. I took my family out to eat for my son bday it his favorite place to eat.... but now it sad to say we had a terrible experience the sever was rude and kept staring at my family and i. We didn't even finish are food before are bill was put on the table she even stood and stared at us the whole time we ate. It was rather uncomfortable it never was like this before. I work in food business and know that not how you should act. I even asked her if there was something I could help her with and she just walked away. An overall nice buffet. They only have a drink menu. Otherwise you just show up, look st the fish tank, and then pick up a plate and get what you want to eat. They have a few self serving stand things, with a pretty wide range of food. They have food from China, Japan, and wherever pudding is from, to name a few, unless I have poor knowledge of cultural food and its origins. They have a salad bar, soup, lots of fried things, sushi, some great desserts, and about everything else you'd expect at a Chinese buffet. From my experience they aren't usually too full. Prices are about $10 for all you can eat lunch per person, give or take. Food quality is about, if not slightly above average, however they have good fried things and hardly anything shoddy. The food has a tendency to give you, or at least me and a few others I've talked to, a somewhat upset stomach, but still better than the McAche, as I call it. 8.5 Chinese buffets out of 10 I suggest the rangoon things. read more

I look at this place as a Seafood Buffet because I can get unlimited "Peel 'em and eat 'em shrimp", Sushi Rolls, clams, muscles as well as the various chinese dishes all for one entry price! I find the Seafood fresh, plentyful, and well displayed. Each time in the service has been friendly and efficient. For Grass Valley, this place is pretty good with its selection of food! Went for lunch buffet, full salad bar with Chinese Chicken Salad, delicious hot and sour soup and dumplings. Fried rice and Chow Mein were good and the meat and veggie dishes were fresh and loaded with gigantic veggies, (broccoli, mushrooms, zucchini, green pepper, onions, etc.) Spicy Szechuan beef had a lot of flavor. They also have sushi, eggrolls, fried chicken, sausage and more with a dessert bar ( was too full to try) but will next time. Very clean restaurant and polite, nice workers. The price of about $11:50 was good for the amount of food! A few of the recipes could be updated such as the egg foo young and the sweet and sour sauce, which were not very good, but overall best place in town for Chinese food with the limited options in this area. It is best to go on a busier day of the week for more variety at the buffet. Tue and Wed are slower days so there is less food put out. Thurs - Sun. or even Monday the selection is better. Also, if you get there just before they are closing there is less variety. You can also get a take away box if you want to get the buffet to go and they have a full menu to order off as well! read more

They also served sushi, but I never tried it... I'm very picky about the sushi I eat and if it looks like it's been sitting out for a while, I wont touch it. This isn't my favorite restaurant, but I've warned up to it. Their egg foo yung is pretty good, their ribs are okay, their paper wrapped chicken is fine, and their crab rangoon is solid. I've never had food poisoning, and the service is pretty good. They refill drinks rapidly. Their salad bar isn't bad. That having been said, I just think it's mediocre. Their soup isn't great, their dessert options are kind of generic, and a lot of what they make is only okay. The price is totally reasonable, so I give it a star for that.
