I enjoyed my Baja Chicken bowl. I'm just disappointed at how pricey it is for the size. It's a well situated location off Fairview and MacArthur, in a large shopping plaza, so plenty of parking. They have indoor and outdoor seating. I do love the salsa bar; I usually go for the green salsa, hot red salsa, and jalapeños. They recently renamed their food items, at least the bowl, so if you remember California bowl, this was likely it. read more

I don't think I've ever dined at this Rubio's coastal Grill location, but it's pretty easy to find in the SK Market shopping center right next to Blaze Pizza. There's plenty of parking even with all the eateries there. I was excited their Langostino Lobster Burritos/Bowls & Chicken Tortilla Soup were back. This is probably my favorite time at Rubio's due to these seasonal dishes. Too bad they're just seasonal! I'd be here all the time. My jr high bestie I met there around 6:45p on a Wed and I was surprised how slow it was. She never had their chicken tortilla soup ($4.99), and she seemed disappointed she didn't see it on the menu. I quickly pointed her to the little cardboard ad sitting on the counter. We got the bowls of soup, she got a shrimp taco and a mahi-mahi taco and I ordered the Langostino Lobster Bowl ($15.99) with extra garlic butter. Of course, you can't have a meal without a nice cold Modelo ($5.99) Luis took our order and he was super sweet. When he asked if I wanted a receipt, I said no. Then I realized I didn't scan my points into the Rubio's app to get my freebies. When I returned up to the counter, Luis quickly found the receipt that he had thrown out for me. When my friend were looking for a booth seats, we found that the booths were pretty dirty. It was slow enough to have it the dining room clean, so I think that could be an improvement. We sat in the corner with chairs instead, but we really did prefer the booth. One thing I noticed was that the high top tables had really great big wide stools for your tooshie. This barstool definitely looked comfy! The food arrived hot, and my friend and I enjoyed every bite. The only thing I could mention is their salsa bar didn't seem to have the freshest ingredients. The limes, cilantro, and onions seemed oxidized, so they could've used a refresh. Other than that, it was a great experience! read more

I met up with a good friend of mine here for dinner. I ordered my favorite Salsa Verde Shrimp taco. It is filled with avocado, cheese, cabbage, cilantro/onion, chipotle lime crema on a flour tortilla. i also ordered the new item, Roasted Sweet Potato taco. It is filled with roasted sweet potato, cabbage, corn nuts, spicy chili de arbol salsa, avocado crema, and cilantro/onion on a flour tortilla. The taco was absolutely delicious. Corn nuts in the taco was a bit weird, but it was a good crunch in every bite. My friend ordered: Salsa Verde Shrimp, Original Fish Taco and Blacken Mahi. If I come back again, I am going to try the new Hot Honey Shrimp Burrito. The service was great. Staff was friendly. Ambiance was clean inside and outside. read more

Rubio's is my favorite quick service Mexican restaurant. They use fresh and delicious ingredients and all at reasonable prices. They also have an awesome all day Taco Tuesday deal. If you have the app, you get really good benefits like a BOGO deal for your birthday month, and you earn points with every purchase that you can redeem for free menu items. Their most famous tacos are their Original Baja Style Fish Tacos. And they are really good, but I absolutely love their classic steak tacos, and the chicken tacos. All of them are packed with protein, cheese, lettuce, tomato bits, and guacamole. The sides are all super flavorful too, like the no-fried beans, guacamole, and their perfectly salted tortilla chips. Bad customer experience today. I ordered two tacos salsa verde, no Verde, no onion/cilantro and a chopped salad with shrimp to go. The tacos were on different tortillas than usual, and they had onion/cilantro but no Chipotle sauce (making them very dry) or fresh lime slices. The avocado slices left a bit to be desired as well. The salad came with crumvled tortilla chips instead of tortilla strips, which were soggy by the time I got home with the food. Looks like this location is cutting corners to save money. I come here probably once a month for lunch from work. I basically always get the Gourmet Veggie Taco Plate. I usually order on the app and pick up the order. My order is always ready on the shelf for the time requested. I haven't had any issues with the service or my order. The tacos are flavorful and the portion size is very filling. The veggie tacos have cauliflower, bell peppers, corn, & avocado with melted cheese on the corn tortilla. The taco plate comes with 2 sides that you can pick. The salsa bar has a bunch of different salsa options from mild to hot, hot sauces (diablo & jalapeno citrus), onion/cilantro mix, pickled jalapenos/carrot mix, and limes. My favorite is the picante salsa and diablo hot sauce. They have a decent number of vegetarian options, including impossible meat. read more

I ordered the shrimp quesadilla, and it was made just right. There wasn't a surplus amount of cheese, every thing was well proportioned. And Jacqueline, Rachel, and Juanita were very well trained on how to greet guests and they were very respectful. I definitely will visit this store more often. I come to Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, and a visit to this store will make my morning of Worshipping my God so much more enjoyable. Keep up the good work ladies. I am someone who lived in San Diego in the 80s and 90s and always admired Ralph Rubio and this restaurant concept, as the little chain that could. They focused on good fish tacos, it was (slightly) more upscale than typical fast food, and not as fancy as upscale Mexican food restaurants. I enjoyed their beachy vibes and the salsa bar, which allows you to customize your meal. Lots have changed since then, including a much-expanded menu, but the salsa bar is still there. The prices have gone up a lot, although they have discounted tacos as part of a fairly weak Taco Tuesday promotion. And you can have a beer and enjoy your taco(s) in the restaurant. In addition to the battered fish taco, the mahi mahi is especially notable. The carne asada and chicken burritos are good, although I usually gravitate towards the fish, which you can't find at all other Mexican restaurants. The restaurant always seems empty, and I know this chain struggled with Covid closures (completely closing in two states and declaring bankruptcy), but the staff are friendly and food is prepared rapidly. read more

This is where they inform me, the limit is 2, not the 5 I was gonna order. Ok fine, guess I'll just get 2 tacos. Then she says I have to order something for the promo to work. wtf?! Mind you, neither stipulation is on the promo off FB that I've screen cap. Then the cashier pulls out this printed form from behind the counter w said stipulations. Wow, it's 2026 and I thought I would never see a Bait and Switch scam again. But it's alive and well at your local Rubio's. Kind of disappointing but I was hungry regardless. I forgot how tiny the refried bean side is. It's the same size I use for the pico de gallo salsa cup. We've been going to this location for years with not issues, until yesterday. My wife tried calling in our order in advance and was told they were too busy to take her order and essentially hung up on my wife. So, I drive to the restaurant to order myself and the wait was 30 minutes. There was around 6-8 other people who had been waiting for their food as well. Eventually I got my food and headed home to realize I was overcharged for an extra fish taco plate. Okay, misunderstandings happen. I call the restaurant later that evening when it would likely be less busy, but I end up talking to a cashier who can't get the manager on the phone. They take my number to call me back, but I never got a call back. Next day, I call them back a few more times and was told the same thing, the manager is too busy to take my call. I don't know about you, but it sounds like I was given the run-around so they can avoid dealing with their mistake. Good job Rubio's! You've successfully demonstrated a poor business model and lack of decent customer service. Take your business to another location, everyone. read more

I came in around 5:45pm today to order some take out for myself. The place was not really that busy except for two couples dining in. I ordered the two beer battered fish taco plate for to go. While waiting for my order to be made, I went to the salsa bar to get some sauces for my tacos and chips. About 10 minutes later another few customers came in to pick up their orders and place dine ins. A customer that place their order after me received their order I noticed. I asked one of the cashiers if mine was coming and she said it was coming right up. After party of 6 people ordered their food for dine in started to received their own orders for dine in. I was wondering what had happened to my food. By now it was almost 20-30 minutes since my food was placed. Around 6:20pm I left with my food. This Rubio's is definitely my favorite one in the OC for all the reasons that make me enjoy the food so much! This place is tucked in the plaza with Super King and the other restaurants around it. This place is a cool spot to be able to eat inside if you prefer the A/C or outside to enjoy the beautiful weather that everyone comes to the OC for. Coming inside, the service staff are very polite in the times I've come here and are very helpful to give tips on the menu! My personal favorite is the gourmet shrimp two taco plate and it is just absolutely awesome! What makes it gourmet is the sauce that adds a slightly sweet, slightly mild kick with bacon toppings, hints of cheese in the tortilla and huge slices of avocado to top it all off! It definitely doesn't hold back on the beautiful assortments of flavors and when you add your own flavor to it from the salsa bar, I surely look forward to enjoy each and every bite! read more

We normally never have a problem here and frequent this location often but tonight we ordered our food, waited patiently and when our to go order was ready, we asked for mild salsa since the salsa bar is closed due to COVID. It's the most popular salsa and Rubio's main salsa. I was told beyond my belief that they're out of that salsa. I blinked in disbelief and asked again, "You're out of your MAIN salsa???" "the only salsa that I look forward to on my burrito especial????" He said yes. I was so blown away, I left without saying another word. When I got home I also realized my soda was not in the bag that I paid for. Really disappointed in the service there tonight. I ordered (and tipped very well) an order to be delivered to our hotel. We are from out of town and have no transportation. I specifically requested online a type of sauce, and called them prior to the delivery to make sure sauce was included. It did not come with our order, and the food was delivered cold. When I called the store to request a delivery of sauce or a partial refund they told me no, and said I could come get the sauce (I can't, I'm from out of town and have no transportation). However, the beans that come with the combo are lacking flavor and the chips are pretty bad. This location seemed to be understaffed as many tables went un-bused for quite awhile. There was one ponytailed girl who moved at the speed of light with a smile doing the work of 3 employees. Other than her most others seem lackadaisical about being there. I had placed a big order for a family event, and when I got home, I didn't have the sauces, the soup, and a burrito box with the fish taco. I call the restaurant to have my missing stuff refunded, and a week later, I still have to contact the manager to check on the refund status. It's like if I didn't receive what I paid for, at least give me my money back for what I didn't receive. Next time I'll be purchasing my food elsewhere. And to top it off, it's hard to get a hold of the general manager. Whoever answers the phone will transfer the phone to another manager and then to another person. I came here after a long day and was feeling very tired and unfocused. Walking in the young lady at the cashier was super friendly and nice, she didn't rush us when I couldn't decided what I wanted. I ended up ordering the Panko crusted shrimp tacos. I had a bunch of questions about the ingredients and substitutions and she was super patient with me. The lead manager was also very helpful. They made us feel very welcomed. The location of this Rubio's is on the corner of McArthur and Fairview near other restaurants. There is plenty of parking but it can get hectic on the weekends. They keep the place very clean and orderly and their Salsa bar looked very well stocked and clean. The young lady that originally helped us and the manager made sure the tables were clean and that everyone got their order promptly. I ordered my shrimp tacos with the salsa on the side and with black beans. The flavor was really good with just the aoli sauce but the green salsa also had a nice tangy taste to it. The beans were delicious and the chips were nice and crunchy. The only thing that I was not really digging were the tortillas, I like that they are thicker and didn't fall apart on me but they could have been warmed a bit longer, they felt a little too firm and undercooked. Hadn't been at this location in a while, and I decided to go in to pick up something for dinner. I waited in line and there was a Cashier (very nice guy) and a Manager, (Rick or Ricardo). Rick was taking care of all the orders associated via on-line and pick-ups. I waited a long time to be assisted because the clients prior to me where having issues with the coupons. I waited patiently, followed 2 more people, it was my turn, and I also tried to present my digital coupon and it did not work. The cashier tried to help, and then he escalated to Rick, after asking him about 5 times and asking if he could validate any coupons, he declined. I understand we are all trying to get use to the new norm, but I was very upset because I did not even get $1 off. I do not like to pay for full price and I have been a very tight budget and I just felt, I could have stayed at my house and had my own meal without having to deal with your Manager at this store. I understand he has to follow protocol, but he could have been nicer and maybe had an extra one, like the Cashier tried to do. I felt the cashier tried to do more then the Manager. I am still upset about it, that I asked him for the receipt so I could provide you with a my feedback. I do not know if I will be going again to this particular store, but it not good to lose a customer over $1.00.
