The Shirley temple tasted funny, we think the bartender substituted something, instead of the grenadine. We ordered 3 steak dinners and one chicken dinner. They brought the wrong chicken dinner. Then took 20 minutes to get us the right one to the table. We were all done eating when his food arrived. That's unacceptable. We wanted to order another glass of wine, and the server said the bar closed at.8pm. We arrived at 7pm and were not told they were closing early - 8pm. I have been coming here for over 10 years. I always bragged about how good everything was. I recently had a work trip to Reno and took some colleagues here. It was not a good experience. Never thought I would try Ruby River but it was actually pretty good! A friend from out of town wanted to go, so we visited for an early dinner. The decor is indeed western themed with vintage cowboy boots everywhere and cozy, dimly-lit booths. We were sat right away and served a warm loaf of fresh bread with a ramekin of what sadly tasted like margarine instead of butter, and got our orders in. I had the 8oz ribeye which came out PERFECTLY medium and was melt in your mouth delicious! My sides were a garden salad which was okay, kind of frosty from the fridge, and a bowl of yummy French Onion soup with classic beefy broth and gooey cheese. My friend had the stuffed potato which was HUGE and she said it was good. Overall was impressed with the quality and prep of the meat and sides (except for the margarine and extra cold salad) and thought the service was great. I've gotta admit, I am a sucker for a good cut of steak. But finding which one would satisfy my taste buds can be tougher than I thought. And when you're in Reno, you've got so many casinos offering screaming deals and specials on prime rib, filet mignon, and ribeye steaks, its hard to narrow down just one place. However, I took my chances trying out a place that only had 3.5 stars; this was none other than "Ruby River Steakhouse". Located directly on South Virginia St. and across the street from the "Peppermill" Hotel & Casino, Ruby River Steakhouse has been a long standing staple in the biggest little city in the world for several decades. This is their only Nevada location while they have 3 other locations in Utah; Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Provo. Since this was my very first time trying their food, I was hoping for a generous stick-to-your-ribs dinner that would leave me feeling full for the rest of the evening. I arrived here with my +1 at around 6:15pm during the late-afternoon/early evening of Saturday 7/1/2023. The parking lot is actually quite generous as they offer an abundance of spots available even during the busiest times. They do have very generous hours of operation being open Monday-Thursday from 4-9:30pm, Friday/Saturday from 4-10:30pm, and Sunday from 4-9pm. Reservations are not required. And from the time we entered until we were seated took less than 10 minutes; a very quick turnaround time on a busy Saturday evening. Upon entering, I loved the dark dim-lit ambiance that surrounds the entire building. Much of the decor has a prominent country/western theme to it including cowboy/cowgirl boots, a jukebox, and even signed guitars by country musicians. There are also other noticeable things including western attire (cowboy hats, lassos, spurs) and even a deer head taxidermy. This place also offers a full-on bar serving up a ton of cold beers on tap and mixed drinks. The overall look and feel of this place reminded me more of what I would see in Texas and not Nevada. As far as the menu goes, this place offers all the comfort classics. This includes appetizers including cheese fries, artichoke dip, egg rolls, and fried shrimp. They also offer a nice variety of salads, burgers, seafood, pasta, chicken, pork, and ribs. But the main reason why I wanted to come here is their steak. Here, you will find all the popular beef cuts; ribeye, New York, sirloin, porterhouse, filet mignon, and prime rib. After taking time what choice I wanted to make, I finally settled with a 6 oz. cut of the "Steak Oscar". This is a USDA choice top sirloin that is grilled to perfection and topped with crab, asparagus and their house-made béarnaise sauce. I chose a side of "Garlic Mashed Potatoes & White Gravy" and "Steamed Broccoli w/Garlic Butter". And to wash it down, I chose a large 22 oz. mug of Hefeweizen. My +1 went with a 10 oz. cut of their "Top Sirloin"; also with the mashed potatoes but a Caesar Salad. After placing our orders, everything arrived in a very timely manner; only 15 minutes. The entire presentation looked better than the pictures that I took. Probably because of this place being so dark, I didn't have the settings on my phone set correctly. As far as the steak itself, this tasted quite delicious; a little on the saltier side but it was cooked medium rare; just how I like it. The garlic mashed potatoes were amazing though but the white gravy too was quite a bit salty. I did like the steamed broccoli as the melted butter made this vegetable even something the kids would enjoy. Overall, the Steak Oscar itself was a 4.5 out of 5. All in all, "Ruby River Steakhouse" is an above average steakhouse that I highly recommend. It is no-frills meaning don't expect a white tablecloth. Even our server was in a tanktop and shorts (this was in early July) so rest assured that you can come here in a t-shirt and flip-flops. Best of all, this place is quite affordable; even with meat prices skyrocketing in 2023. I was amazed how this place has much lower prices than some of the more fancier steakhouses in Reno. With that said and done, I am giving Ruby River an above-average rating of four stars. read more

We came here for dinner on a work event while staying at Peppermill across the street. There was 20 of us and we made reservations in advance. We were seated right away although we could not sit together. They don't have a party room or table to sit altogether so they gave us a small section of the restaurant where we sat in separate booths. It was hard to visit with people. Each table had an order of their pepper poppers and buffalo wings waiting for us. The poppers had too much cream cheese and the wings were very hard and overcooked. We didn't eat all of them. I ordered the steak and ribs. You get 2 sides so I got a baked potato and Asparagus. I added a Parmesan tomato because that looked good. He asks if I wanted the potato "jacketed"? they do this on other items but they batter and deep fry the potato afterwards. Eh, I passed. Food arrived in good time and it looked good. The meat fell off the ribs and the steak was tender but it was so bland and boring that I really ate it just to eat it. I needed some A1. A good steak should be able to stand on its own. Even Sizzlers has a better steak which someone said that is what used to be there in its place. Service was attentive and friendly although he forgot my tomato. I told him no big as we had a lot of food already. Then he asked if we wanted dessert. I said sure, give us the dessert menu. He says, "we don't have one, I will just tell you what we have." We chose the bread pudding since it was a little different for the 3 of us to share. The table next to us said it was delicious. It was sizable and looked good but it was cold and hard as a rock. We each took one bite and didn't want anymore. It was awful. It may have been better if it was warm but it was stone cold. Then later when talking to other co-workers about it, they said theirs was warm. They must have forgot to heat ours up! So my boss summed it up, "it's a cross between Chilis and Outback steakhouse". Yeah, I couldn't understand why they were so busy? there has to be a better steakhouse for $30+ a plate? I was not impressed and give them 3 stars for effort. We had a really disappointing experience at Ruby River Steakhouse in Reno. Our server barely checked on us -- I had to ask for a second drink myself, and she didn't even bother asking if my husband wanted another. She also completely forgot his side dish, and by the time we realized she wasn't coming back, he was already over it and didn't even want to chase it down. She only had maybe two tables, yet I still had to get up and ask for our check... which meant interrupting her while she was sitting three tables away eating her own steak dinner with coworkers. We also had to listen to their gossip the whole time. Super unprofessional. The food was mediocre at best -- neither of us finished our meals and we didn't take leftovers. The floors were dirty and looked like they hadn't been maintained at all, even though there were plenty of employees hanging around the bar chatting instead of working. Date night done right! I cannot believe I had lived here so long and never knew this hidden gem was right under my nose. I love a great steakhouse and if you can make me a perfect steak, I'll be a customer for life. We received a gift card, so Ruby River was our first date place after becoming new parents again. I didn't want to leave our son, but the hubbs didn't have to twist my arm when I saw the menu and pictures I was sold. We ordered a browning onion to start, dinner came with salads and we both had a Caesar. I ordered filet Oscar and fried fully loaded baked potato was to die for! I would come back for that! We previously had a mishap where the food runner dropped my steak literally in my lap, but we were able to recover and didn't burn too bad. Accidents happen, but the managers lack of care didn't sit well with me. I didn't show how upset I was otherwise my hubby would have blown up. We enjoyed dinner even with the mishap. We finished our night off with a créme brulee and asked for the sauce on the side. They have great food, prices are fair and call ahead if you have a big party. read more

Went there with friends for dinner during hot August nights, seated within 5 minutes, cool. Friends all ordered steaks I got fish and chips. They liked their steaks but mine was absolutely the worst fish and chips I've ever had, besides the fact it came out cold. Obviously my fish was done first and sat until friends steaks were done. The fish itself was super thin and dried out and cold fries were just not good. Only reason for the one star is because they don't offer zero and the one thing that was good was the side of mushrooms. I will definitely never return. read more

We wanted to try some place different and Ruby River was suggested by a co worker. It's a country bar meets restaurant. Cowboys boots lined up and Reno rodeo posters on the walls. We started with a couple of beers. Then on to a wedge salad. The salad was tasty just the right amount of blue cheese to bacon and tomato ratio. The bacon added a great smokiness to the salad. The ribeye was seasoned well and cooked to my liking. The baked potato was cooked with a batter on the outside, it was too greasy and off putting so I just pulled it off and it was fine. Hubby ordered the ribs and chicken. The ribs were fall off the bone tender but the chicken was meh, it sat on a strange tasting honey mustard, next time he said he'd ordered it without the sauce because everything else tasted great. The server and or bidder removed out plates as we finished, thankfully (pet peeve when they don't) so was appreciative We were offered dessert but we were both stuffed. read more

Nice place. Great decor but we came for the food. Enjoy the hot sourdough bread with butter because after that the food falls down dramatically. We both ordered the bacon wrapped filet and they had an odd taste almost like it was bacon wrapped over a week prior or something? The "jacketed potatoes" were quite frankly gross. It's like they dip a previously baked potato in some sort of batter then deep fry it so it has a rock hard outer cover that is inedible. The inside of the potato was fine though. The reason for three stars is because the service was great. We came here for our 30th anniversary because a few people recommended it. I'm wondering if it was at one time fabulous? I can easily see how with a few changes this place could be phenomenal but as of now it's barely better than Sizzler. So we come up every six months from Northern California. Ruby River is one of our favorites. The sweet potato deep-fried alone is an experience in itself with that creamy cinnamon butter Yum.! Last night we had a great experience with Hayden he was attentive. He was great customer service he made sure we got all of our food. He just was very, very kind. Good server you could hear him talking to the other customers. Just a really good kid. Great food the steak is phenomenal. Salad is delicious. Their salad is like no other. A comfortable western steakhouse that is so reasonable for the portions/sides you get. So many full sized sides that is ordered with the main dishes. The onion soup snowed thickly with 4 cheeses, yum. Their standard dinner salad comes with a myriad of veggies and chopped up boiled egg. We went earlyish on a Saturday and had a short wait. I will say all of the decor is pretty old/outdated looking (I guess that's the point?) but it was also dusty which never feels very appetizing. We ended up waiting quite a while for anyone to come to our table, and service from there remained somewhat slow, though our server was very kind and apologetic. My mom order d halibut that was dry and no flavor. The cheeseburger with bacon, the bacon was burnt. Like not eatable burnt. Would give 0 stars if we could, Ruby River Steakhouse overcharged our card by adding a large tip. My spouse and her friend ate dinner and had a few drinks. Myself and two friends later joined them for a few more drinks after having our own dinner elsewhere. The waiter split the bill for us, and our part of the bill came out to $97 and some change. We added a 15% tip and the total should have been around $112. However, when the transaction posted, it was in the amount of $140! We did some math to attempt to justify it, assuming maybe the waiter added an automatic 18% gratuity, even though we were a party of 5 (it says automatic 18% added for parties of 6 or more on their website) and even that only comes out to around $115. I've had recommendations for this place for years. Maybe we just waited too long to give it a try, but I was not a fan. The staff all hung out at The hostess stand just chatting away. The bathrooms weren't clean, probably cause they were all too busy chatting to care. The dining area didn't feel as if they cleaned well between each guest, and the food tasted like microwave meals to me. The only reason I gave 2 stars, is because I had a good cocktail and we didn't try steak that night since we weren't crazy hungry.
