There is absolutely no way we could be back in New Orleans and not dine at the Ruby Slipper again. I believe the location we were at last was a little smaller. This location was big, airy, lots of natural light. Plenty of conversation throughout but nothing that prevented you from hearing the person you were seated with. We were greeted by Brandi and asked if we wanted to dine outside or inside at a table or the bar. We opted to sit inside at a table and were seated immediately. Our server, Niye, was pleasant and greeted us with a nice smile. Our meals subsequently came out but we had no silverware. I couldn't get the attention of our server, so I asked another for it along, with the cane butter I had previously requested. Our server brought it over the silverware but had to go back for the cane butter. My meal was cold so I had to send it back. It didn't take long to receive the Costa Rican Breakfast which consisted of two eggs, spicy chorizo sausage, slow-cooked black beans & rice, topped with warm tomato salsa, crispy plantains, and avocado. I must say I enjoyed the meal but was disappointed with service from Niye or her mood change after mentioning my food was cold. I would have expected her to come back to see if all was well, she didn't and I would have expected her to see if we needed or wanted anything else prior to handing us the bill, she didn't. I pride myself on giving great tips and often go over but this was one of those rare times, I could not, based on the service we received towards the end. Years ago, The Ruby Slipper was a must-visit every time I came to New Orleans. It was part of the tradition, and I always looked forward to it. After being away since before COVID, I finally made it back to NOLA and couldn't wait to return to a place I once loved -- but sadly, this visit was incredibly disappointing. The service was awful. I was told by the woman at the bar that my order would be ready in "5 more minutes" -- yet I ended up waiting over 45 minutes past the original pickup time. During that wait, they completely forgot my drinks, and when they finally remembered, it felt like they still took forever to make them, as if I hadn't already been standing there all that time. When I finally received my order, it was a mess. The iced coffee had that awful "refrigerator" taste (if you know, you know), and the food was both cold and burnt -- something I didn't even know was possible, but here we are. On top of that, the to-go order was missing items, the bag broke, food spilled, and the coffee leaked everywhere. The entire experience left me completely frustrated and honestly sad, because this used to be a favorite. Unfortunately, after this visit, I won't be returning. I hope they're able to turn things around, but I won't be taking the risk again. read more

I love this place, and was worried it wouldn't be open after the snow storm. The food here is so comforting. The staff was super nice. I sat myself at the bar and was immediately taken of. I ordered the Spiced Vanilla Latte which was delightful. Then because of the limited menu since no one has gotten deliveries since the snow storm. My meal was delicious, a southern breakfast with scrambled eggs with cheddar and potatoes instead of grits. So good. We visited N.O. 8 months ago, and had such a great meal/atmosphere at the Ruby Slipper, that we went back for breakfast every morning on that trip. Our waitress seemed reluctant and surly, not remotely warm and welcoming. It took 27 minutes for our order to arrive, despite the fact that as I said, the restaurant was empty. I'm not a local, and I'm sure there are other amazing brunch places in town, but I thought Ruby Slipper was really fantastic! The absolute most important thing: GET THERE EARLY. We got there at 9a on a weekday (but during a holiday week) and there was *already* a wait to sit inside. Thankfully, they have lots of seating outside (much of which is under heaters), so we were able to get seated outside immediately. By the time we left around 10:30a, there was a HUGE group of people waiting (like, easily more than 30 people) to be seated inside OR outside. They have an online waitlist that you can use as well, but your whole party has to be there to check in -- it's not a reservation. (That said -- it's a great way to check how busy they are before you leave the house!) The food was really, really good and tasty. We were particularly a fan of the eggs benedict combos (for folks who can't choose!) and the pancakes. Our waiter was lovely and when he heard that one kid wanted 2 pancakes and one wanted 1 pancake, he rang it up in such a way as we were charged for 1 pancake order (which comes with 3 pancake) and then he just brought extra plates. Aka, he made more work for himself when he could've kept his mouth shut and let us spend more. (Yes, we tipped well!) Overall, service fantastic, food fantastic (seriously, some of the best pancakes I've ever had), and the vibes outside were great! Every time I have visited NOLA, except for one mandatory trip to Cafe Du Monde for breakfast, I have eaten at Ruby Slipper every morning. The food is just that good that I didn't want to try to eat somewhere else and be disappointed. I would be there bright and early when they open at 7am. I also asked my hotel to call them and reserve a reservation for me for 7am. If you want to get a seat of your choice, come when they open at 7am as by 8am there is often a line. My go-to favorites are the Shrimp and grits. Soooo delicious! I try to avoid pork, but the pork tasso tastes so good in this dish and not sure they can make the delicious sauce/gravy without it, so eat pork I did. You can probably just get shrimp and grits without the pork sauce if you ask, but you will be missing out. Their biscuits are huge and filling and delicious. Goes great with butter and jam or dipped into the sauce on the grits. I also started trying their fried green tomatoes on my second visit to NOLA and wow!! I have never had fried green tomatoes this delicious! They come with an irresistible bacon jam, roumelade sauce, chopped red tomatoes and chopped lettuce. Warm and inviting and not too heavy. A bit too light for breakfast alone, unless you don't have much of an appetite. I was disappointed their bananas flambe french toast. It was okay, but not as banana saucy as I expected. Nor were the bananas very carmelized. But, I get the feeling that their banana pancakes are probably a lot better. Definitely check out this spot. You won't need to add anything to your food (except for maybe hot sauce if you like things a bit spicier) and you will leave full and contented. Easter Sunday is a busy day at the Ruby slipper, but one can assume most Sundays are busy here. We put ourselves on the wait list about 25 minutes before we arrived and we seating immediately when we got there around 9:00 on Easter Sunday. We were lucky enough to snag a seat outside for some good people watching and it did not disappoint. For my breakfast I chose the mix and match egg bennies. My favorite out of the two was the shredded pork one, but I also got the one with shrimp and fried green tomato. Both were tasty, but my preference is typically pork. My husband ordered the omelet that comes with 3 eggs and asked if he could add additional eggs to the omelet (for an additional cost of course). Crystal our waitress said she would make the request, but the kitchen put the 2 extra eggs on the side. I'm assuming it's because of how busy they are and the sheer volume of customers that come through. I would argue that the omelet was a bit small and even question if it contained 3 eggs to begin with. There were no complaints in taste though. Crystal was a great and friendly waitress and deserved every cent of her tip. She kept refills flowing and offered me a to go for my coffee. Signing up for the waitlist saves so much time! I had a view of Ruby Slipper from my hotel room and could see a crowd of people waiting outside the restaurant to get seated. After putting myself on the list, I waited about an hour, then walked 2 minutes to check in with the hostess. She sat me at the bar right away. Diners who didn't put themselves on the waitlist were being told 80 minutes, but I think it went through quicker than that. As far as the food and service goes, I didn't love it. French toast bites were just okay, I should've just waited for some beignets at my usual place to satisfy my sweet tooth. I ordered the skinny migas, which is the vegetarian version of the dish. I will say the menu is transparent, and they have a dietary menu on their website. One of the guys behind the bar was giving excellent service to everyone and made sure he was available to the customers he was checking out, offering water cups to go and take away containers with a bag and silverware. When the other server was closing my bill, she was quick to say bye after my payment went through. I had to call after her to ask for a to go container. She grabbed it for me quickly and was gone again - a far cry from the other guy working. I came in before work, so I couldn't drink, but the champagne flight and cocktails looked great! The flavors were Blueberry Lavender, Watermelon Pomegranate, Pineapple Peach Bellini, and Blue Orange. Each flavor was pretty good and the champagne was definitely present! For entrees I had the bananas foster French toast and it was absolutely delicious! I'm a huge fan of bananas foster and couldn't wait to have it on my favorite breakfast dish. My friend had the eggs Benedict and this was equally delicious! The eggs were cooked perfectly and hollandaise was flavorful. If you don't mind waiting outside for a while, I would highly recommend coming here, especially if the weather is nice. Make sure you get there early or make reservations. It gets crowded and people are willing to wait. They have multiple locations but each location has a long wait. Walking distance, no need to drive. If you have a long wait, there's plenty around the area to walk and look at to kill time while you wait. They even offer you to order drinks while you wait if you decide to stay closeby. And believe me, it's worth the wait. We were seated on time and everyone is so nice. The menu isn't too big but everything sounds amazing. I ordered the eggs Benedict trio and only shared a bite of each so that my husband can taste how amazing it was. He ordered the sweet heat chicken and French toast bites - he enjoyed it but wished there was more of it. My girls shared French toast bites with fresh fruit and cinnamon swirl pancakes. They loved every bite. The French toast bites are a perfect one bite with a good crunch. The pancakes were delicious and they could've had more if allowed. I also ordered a boozy iced coffee because when in NOLA, why not. It was delicious, a lot stronger than I was expecting but still yummy. The bloody marys were super flavorful, had just the right amount of spice, and you can take one to go! Since I was there solo, I sat at the bar. It was lively and interactive. The bartender was chatty and got the customers to chat along with her. I ordered the shrimp and grits, but got the catfish and grits on accident. I found the catfish to be a little overly breaded and a bit overcooked but the grits were creamy and delightful. The bacon was crispy and delicious as well.
