For the main course, I ordered the Shrimp and Grits, and wow, this dish was amazing! Gulf shrimp sautéed with pork tasso, bell peppers, red onions, and a beer and rosemary-butter reduction, all served over creamy stone-ground grits with a fluffy and flavorful buttermilk biscuit. The biscuit was truly mouthwatering and added the perfect touch to an already incredible dish. My husband went with the Migas, a Tex-Mex egg scramble with pico de gallo and spicy chorizo sausage over crispy tortilla strips, topped with chipotle sour cream, pico de gallo, pepper jack, and cilantro, served with a side of avocado. I love this place, and was worried it wouldn't be open after the snow storm. The food here is so comforting. The staff was super nice. I sat myself at the bar and was immediately taken of. We visited N.O. 8 months ago, and had such a great meal/atmosphere at the Ruby Slipper, that we went back for breakfast every morning on that trip. Our waitress seemed reluctant and surly, not remotely warm and welcoming. It took 27 minutes for our order to arrive, despite the fact that as I said, the restaurant was empty. Make sure you get there early or make reservations. It gets crowded and people are willing to wait. They have multiple locations but each location has a long wait. Walking distance, no need to drive. If you have a long wait, there's plenty around the area to walk and look at to kill time while you wait. They even offer you to order drinks while you wait if you decide to stay closeby. And believe me, it's worth the wait. We were seated on time and everyone is so nice. The menu isn't too big but everything sounds amazing. I ordered the eggs Benedict trio and only shared a bite of each so that my husband can taste how amazing it was. He ordered the sweet heat chicken and French toast bites - he enjoyed it but wished there was more of it. My girls shared French toast bites with fresh fruit and cinnamon swirl pancakes. I'm not a local, and I'm sure there are other amazing brunch places in town, but I thought Ruby Slipper was really fantastic! The absolute most important thing: GET THERE EARLY. We got there at 9a on a weekday (but during a holiday week) and there was *already* a wait to sit inside. Thankfully, they have lots of seating outside (much of which is under heaters), so we were able to get seated outside immediately. By the time we left around 10:30a, there was a HUGE group of people waiting (like, easily more than 30 people) to be seated inside OR outside. They have an online waitlist that you can use as well, but your whole party has to be there to check in -- it's not a reservation. (That said -- it's a great way to check how busy they are before you leave the house!) The food was really, really good and tasty. We were particularly a fan of the eggs benedict combos (for folks who can't choose!) and the pancakes. Our waiter was lovely and when he heard that one kid wanted 2 pancakes and one wanted 1 pancake, he rang it up in such a way as we were charged for 1 pancake order (which comes with 3 pancake) and then he just brought extra plates. Aka, he made more work for himself when he could've kept his mouth shut and let us spend more. (Yes, we tipped well!) Overall, service fantastic, food fantastic (seriously, some of the best pancakes I've ever had), and the vibes outside were great! Every time I have visited NOLA, except for one mandatory trip to Cafe Du Monde for breakfast, I have eaten at Ruby Slipper every morning. The food is just that good that I didn't want to try to eat somewhere else and be disappointed. I would be there bright and early when they open at 7am. I also asked my hotel to call them and reserve a reservation for me for 7am. If you want to get a seat of your choice, come when they open at 7am as by 8am there is often a line. My go-to favorites are the Shrimp and grits. Soooo delicious! I try to avoid pork, but the pork tasso tastes so good in this dish and not sure they can make the delicious sauce/gravy without it, so eat pork I did. You can probably just get shrimp and grits without the pork sauce if you ask, but you will be missing out. Their biscuits are huge and filling and delicious. Goes great with butter and jam or dipped into the sauce on the grits. I also started trying their fried green tomatoes on my second visit to NOLA and wow!! I have never had fried green tomatoes this delicious! They come with an irresistible bacon jam, roumelade sauce, chopped red tomatoes and chopped lettuce. Warm and inviting and not too heavy. A bit too light for breakfast alone, unless you don't have much of an appetite. I was disappointed their bananas flambe french toast. It was okay, but not as banana saucy as I expected. Nor were the bananas very carmelized. But, I get the feeling that their banana pancakes are probably a lot better. Definitely check out this spot. You won't need to add anything to your food (except for maybe hot sauce if you like things a bit spicier) and you will leave full and contented. The seasonal sweet potato beignet was 4 small beignets plopped atop canned sweet potato purée walnuts and whip cream. The bloody marys were super flavorful, had just the right amount of spice, and you can take one to go! Since I was there solo, I sat at the bar. It was lively and interactive. The bartender was chatty and got the customers to chat along with her. I ordered the shrimp and grits, but got the catfish and grits on accident. I found the catfish to be a little overly breaded and a bit overcooked but the grits were creamy and delightful. The bacon was crispy and delicious as well.
