I was in NOLA for like 20hours on a work mission. and i decided to have breakfast here. Everyone at the hotel i was staying recommended it. So i gave it a shot Im from NYC so i had to try theyre Bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. And i will tell you it was official. I told them instead of a roll put it on a biscuit. Happy bellies here! This location is much smaller from the one on Magazine St., but I love the charm and intimate feeling this one brings. The Ruby Slipper's menu had so many options to choose from, it was tough to choose. I was between the southern breakfast plate and the fried chicken on French toast but opted for the southern plate to try their biscuit and fried green tomato. I was visiting from California and found this place because we were looking for brunch. I do recommend adding your name and your number in your party into the waitlist because it does get very busy and the wait times can be very long. There's a couple of locations of this breakfast-lunch eatery, and our group found ourselves in the one near Canal. It's a bit small inside, and there's a few outdoor seats, so it feels a little cramped. Menu is familiar as it's got a lot of local Cajun type of dishes. I got the following: - Catfish and Grits - 6.5/10: presentation was nice. But there was way more breading than actual catfish. The filet portions are really small. Not a good ratio from the typical cornmeal jacket to filet. A little disappointing. - NOLA Style Iced Coffee - 8/10: Terrific chickory beverage. Very smooth. They are so popular you almost always have to sign up for the waitlist online but I promise you it will always be worth the wait. This visit we decided to try a variety of menu options. - Bayou Shrimp and Chicken St. Charles Bennies were flavorful and delicious and served on their world famous biscuits. If I remember correctly I believe our server said they serve over 2-3 million biscuits per year. I can 100% see why, they are some of the best homemade biscuits you'll ever have. - Southern Breakfast with a side of pancakes all were good and filing (you'll see how big the pancakes are in my pictures) -Sweet Heat Chicken & French Toast Bites were cooked to perfection and flavorful. Love that they have yelp waitlist. This is a great option as they do have a wait. Hostess was very kind and helpful. We were quickly seated after checking in. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately the food quality was not worth it. I have been to another Ruby Slippers location and found the food to be great. Perhaps it's this location, or the combination of the timing being the weekend following superbowl and preparation for Mardi Gras. Coffee was great no complaints. Eggs Cochon Benedict came out with the eggs overcooked and no yolk to be found. Waiter was kind to bring out some fresh ones, but unfortunately when I cut into the pork and biscuit both were cold. He took it back and came out with a new plate. Unfortunately it wasn't better so I ate the eggs and biscuit. At another location it was served hot and the yolks ran all over the pork and biscuit. Sadly this location was either having an off day or just overwhelmed with the amount of people. My fiancés shrimp and grits was better than the Cochon dish, but nothing to give rave reviews about. We immediately made another request to get back on the waitlist and was sat after about 20 minutes. The restaurant is tiny but very packed. The waitstaff were all great, especially considering how busy it was. Unfortunately, for my small group, the food and drinks were either incorrect, or they didn't measure up to our taste. The fried green tomatoes I ordered seemed to lack the actual tomatoes- it tasted almost like just fried batter with the dressings. The drinks were overly sweet but presented nicely. I consider it mainstream because it is very popular online and it seems to have lines out of the door (we usually go for the hole in the wall in New Orleans) but this place was outstanding! We had the Chantilly pancakes, veggie omelette, kids pancake and bacon, and the amazing shrimp and grits! The shrimp and grits literally melt it in your mouth. The grits were cooked so well that you would never know they were a grain. The shrimp were tender, season to perfection and they gave a good amount. Online I did the waitlist and my table was about 20 minutes overdue. We walked in and they took us right away. Do not let the line intimidate you. You might get lucky and be able to find a seat that fit your party still. The servings were huge, the service was outstanding! I believe our waiters name was Chris and he was awesome. Do not trust the hype!! I'm honestly not sure how Ruby Slipper has such a high rating on Yelp after this experience. We joined the waitlist at 9:37 AM, were seated at 10:20 AM, and didn't receive our food until after 11:10 AM. That's over an hour and a half from waitlist to food -- completely unreasonable for breakfast. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre at best and absolutely not worth the long wait. To make matters worse, the restaurant was noticeably dirty, which made the whole experience even more disappointing. We always visit the Slipper on Magazine St but on this occasion, we had breakfast at this locale. This is southern cuisine at its finest whether you are there for breakfast or their awesome brunch. Biscuits and gravy are a must order. Don't fancy gravy order the biscuit and you will be comparing their off the chart flaky biscuits to all others and be disappointed that you are not at the Slipper. On this visit I ordered their Spanish omelet, and it was just stuffed with chorizo and veggies. I made sure to include a biscuit. This breakfast stayed with me throughout the day. I did notice that an adjoining diner ordered their Costa Rican breakfast. Warning: It was huge, and you could easily split this dish. Service on this visit was Meh. The waiter at the next table was outgoing and even offered to go drinks to his table. Ours appeared to be doing us a favor by taking our order and bringing us a 2nd coffee.
