Basic Mexican! Not the worst but not the best. A little bit of a tourist trap close to the water!

This place is a must. Great food, awesome customer service, and a whole lot of tequila options. This is one of the better quality Mexican restaurants. RuRu's has a huge menu!! From tacos to quesadillas to fajitas, they have it all! Everything is very budget friendly - all tacos are under $5/each and all other meals are under $12. It's fun to read all of the menu item names and guess which movie they quote (we did this until the food came ). Great atmosphere, perfect for any occasion. We visited the Charleston location but will make the Charlotte spot our new go-to Mexican restaurant. read more

I was strictly sticking to my collections for my weekend trip to Charleston. While on the way to our next drink stop, my boyfriend suggested we get some margaritas and queso. I'm in! The decor is vibrant and bright. We decided to sit at a booth around 8:00pm on a Saturday. It was very slow... we waited 10 minutes at our booth before we headed to the bar for service as no one came up. The bar tender was quick to get our drink order but did the drop and run. Literally ready to order queso but she ran to talk with other staff for awhile before asking if we wanted anything else. Not a big deal, margaritas were small for $10 but pretty good. Finally we get the queso and tasted like weird water with canned corn. I'm pretty easy going especially when bar hoping but this was by far the worst stop of our whole trip in Charleston. read more

Oh man.....my 2nd and last visit. Went for linner Sunday afternoon so easy to get a table. Hostess was very nice and welcoming. After we sat down - not such a great experience on the whole. Our waiter was really nice, friendly smile but pretty much non existent. When he brought our drinks he did it as he was walking by and didn't stop. Very off putting. Queso wasn't hot and had unmelted chunks in it. Food came out too quickly and my sons bowl had chunks of rice that was either not cooked thoroughly or it was old. My quesadilla looked great but I had to pour hot sauce on it to get any flavor. My $14 margarita was not good either. Waiter never checked on us and only came by when we were finished. Stopped in for a quick lunch on a Sunday afternoon. I was seated immediately and had a drink within 5 minutes of my arrival. They were out of ginger beer so they couldn't make the cocktail that I originally ordered but my server suggested the ginger agave seltzer instead which was a great recommendation! I got the vegetarian bowl which was huge and delicious! The tofu was cooked impressively well especially for a Mexican restaurant. We ate at RuRu's on Saturday and really enjoyed our dinner here. I had a frozen strawberry margarita (YUM, it's made with strawberry puree!), and my husband had a couple of beers. We started with chips & the trio of salsa, guacamole and queso to dip the chips in. All were really good, but especially the guacamole. For dinner, we had the Bueller Bueller quesadilla and a burrito (can't remember the name). Both were good, but could've used a little more spice and kick. Service good and friendly! And should be 2 stars but every other place downtown on Sunday afternoon was either 45 minute wait or "sorry, we close in a few minutes", so getting me seated right away gets you an extra star. Server was great. Music was a little too loud and the 3 different tacos I ordered were just average tasting or the one with ground beef actually tasted bad. I've visited this place twice with about a week in between. I have heard about the place from the ex coworker. My first visit I ordered fajita and my last visit I tried the chicken tacos. When fajita was served on a smoky fri pan which makes kinda an impression, my focus was on taste. I was not impressed. The art of cooking is to make simple ingredients taste great. I found rather the opposite. The second visit's order of chicken taco's was too not impressive. While the chicken was chewy the low grade tacos did play the taste down. Sitting in general hall is a bit uncomfortable, especially if you're not with a large party and not sitting at the bar. It is a solid 3-star place, located in downtown Charleston, more or less affordable if you choose to dine on a budget and out of food chain. We came here while visiting Charleston. Pros: very attentive server, Nicely made drinks, Great Tacos, good tasting salsa. Cons: no high chair for kids, Very loud music which sort of killed the vibe for me little. Once thing I didn't understand was using Jasmin rice instead Mexican rice for more authentic taste. The Margaritas were good; tacos and churros not do much. Ordered the buffalo chicken, long duck tacos and churros. The chicken taco was over fried/hard and doused in hot sauce. Couldn't taste the chicken at all just the hot sauce. The duck taco, I took one bite and not another. The churro had some weird crème in the middle. Great stop for a Margarita. RURU, I love you! We called ahead to see if they were kid friendly, the man on the phone was very nice and of course welcomed us with open arms! Our server was Anna, she was so nice, patient and helpful with all of our needs. To start, we had questions about the margaritas, she told us we couldn't really go wrong that they all were tasty (no bottled sours here, BONUS!!!!) she also mentioned you could add a fresh purée in any of the margaritas, sweet! We chose to go with plain lime and at first we were like dang these are small, but it's 100% quality over quantity. They were simply perfect, the rock or frozen were both very tasteful. They also have a handful of different tequilas to choose from, we had a JAJA margarita and it was AMAZING! We shared the three amigos appetizer which was queso, salsa and guac - between the two of us we really loved it! It is a great starter, especially with the warm chips :) My husband has the chicken burrito, he really loved it! He usually would never eat beans but he didn't even mind them and ate mostly all of it. On their menu they have quite a few vegetarian options. By simply taking off a few ingredients (mostly the cheese) they become vegan friendly, ta da! They have a few taco options, a burrito and I went with the bowl option. I decided to add tofu because where do vegans get their protein? (Haha kidding!!) My food was.. hm just okay, it just wasn't as great as I was expecting because everything else was so perfect. I picked out most of the beans, but it just seemed to be missing something. The tofu was definitely not needed or really wanted at this point. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. It was by far one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to. We waited 5-10 minutes just to be greeted during a non busy time, in between lunch and dinner. 3:00 pm during the week. The server had the personality of a stick. Their name has "tacos" in it so we ordered a $6 taco each. I ordered the mahi taco and when it came out, it was a SLIVER of fish and avocado that was hard and COLD, the salsa had zero flavor. It looked pitiful. I sent it back for a buffalo chicken taco. Again meat was cold, food tasted processed, cheese was cold and not melted. Stopped in for a quick lunch while on vacation. We waited about 5-10 minutes for a table to open up. Our server, Abby could have been a little more attentive but was not the worst. It did not seem very busy, but I am assuming they were as understaffed as most of the other restaurants in the area. My boyfriend ordered the "Bend and Snap" salad which was fabulous. It was more of a chicken salad on a bed of green as opposed to a traditional salad. I ordered the "But It's Shark Week" and the "Lookin Good Luis" tacos which were also great. The tacos were medium sized, and if I were hungrier I would have ordered a third. For dessert we tried the tres leche cake and the churros, which were good as well. I have a problem when a Mexican restaurant does not put out salsa and chips. Isn't that what they are know for. Of course you can get them if you pay. Ok $3.99 for a small taco, really? Yes tasty but you have to order 3 if you are hungry. The quesadilla was ok but not much to them. The place itself is nothing to write home about, staff not as attentive as they could be. This was my first time going to this restaurant. It was authentic Mexican food the place was clean and the employees where. Frist we ordered the Three Amigos that was (Queso Blanco,Chunky Guacamole and RuRu's Smokey House Salsa) It came with Tortilla Chips. Then we ordered I'm Nachi Bae - Nachos Served with Queso, Lettuce, Pico, Jalepenos, Crema with Chicken. The portion where very big enough for 4 people. We ordered some tacos Lookin' Good Louis Sautéed Southwestern Shrimp, Lettuce, Pico, Cilantro, Chipotle Aioli. Otherwise, the queso is so good Id drink it straight out of a cup, and the buffalo chicken on the "But It's Shark Week" taco was weirdly incredible. This place is meh. The guacamole had part of the pit in it. The food is bland with no spice but their "solution" To it all is smother it with cheese and a mayo based sauce... no thanks. The workers were not wearing gloves and some of them weren't masked. They were all very young and when I asked what their menu meant by "white beans" she said "you know white beans, I don't really know" which come to find out we're PINTO beans. Half price apps & tequila. Didn't try many items on the menu. Quick afternoon treat was the game plan- Korean duck tacos (huh?, but it was yum), shrimp nachos (partner asks "what kind of cheese is that". Me- "No idea" ). We decided to wait here on a Sunday afternoon for some food and drinks since it was so busy everywhere else. Wait wasn't horrible, and we were seated relatively close to our estimated wait time. We ordered drinks and chips and salsa to start. Margaritas were ok, chips and salsa were pretty bland. I ordered two tacos which were... not tacos. The flavor combinations were so strange and very tasteless overall. The worst part of the entire experience was when our waitress, who was also serving the table directly next to us, grabbed their drinks and was walking towards our table. When she was about one table away she took A SIP of one of their iced teas and then placed the one down that was sweet tea. This is so disgusting, especially amidst a pandemic. If she was willing to DRINK out of a customers drink practically in front of our table, I'm very concerned as to what is going on where no one can see. Safe to say we won't be back, which is a shame because the facility is nice and could have had a lot of potential. Wouldn't even stop back for a drink due to this disturbing experience. read more
