A hot and muggy day we decided to stop early for lunch. The place was empty except for 1. Server brought water right away, quality friendly staff. We ordered Frank the Tank margaritas, frozen, which went nicely after our stroll. I noticed the nachos on the way in so we ordered the steak and nachos. Lots of steak and shrimp with plenty of toppings. I did add some hot sauce for extra spice and flavor which it needed a little heat. There was plenty to share and we decided it was enough for us. I wasn't pleased with the smell in the restrooms but I didn't go there for that. Would recommend. read more

RuRu's has an excellent location on East Bay and offers a good vibrant Mexican / TexMex vibe. The staff is down to earth and always pleasant and enjoyable. The menu is compact with fun titles for their menu items. You can get everything from quesadilla to burrito, tacos to queso, nachos to ahi tuna. The food is good, but often lacks enough flavor and spice. It may not be the best Mexican food in the Lowcountry, but it is satisfying with a good vibe and excellent location. We recommend sitting at the spacious bar. It's always nice and relaxing with great views of the entire restaurant and street people watching. read more

Im a big burrito person so i always get the Clarence beeks burrito. Devine. devine i say. I always have left overs which is my favorite thing ever. Drink wise keep it simple with a margarita, so many flavors to add to get it frozen or on the rocks either way you cant go wrong. Taco wise, "your going the wrong way" is a top one for me. Parking can be tricky on east bay, best bet is parking lot down the street a little. We never make reservations it usually steady. I visited RuRu's with a friend on a Friday afternoon, and we had a wonderful time. I recommend the happy hour because appetizers and tequila are 1/2 off. We started out with the chips and trio of salsa, guacamole, and queso dip. The salsa has a delicious smokey flavor and is not watery. The guac was some of the better quac I've had at Charleston's Mexican restaurants, and the queso was also rich and creamy. I don't normally order queso, so I can't compare it to anywhere else in town. The two of us couldn't finish the app, so I took the leftovers home, and the quac and queso were good the next day- the queso reheats well. For my entree, I had two tacos- the Slappin' the Bass (Mahi) taco and Lookin' Good Louis (shrimp) taco. The shrimp was my favorite. She also had two different tacos, and we left full between the tacos and the app trio. It's "Sober September" so we didn't try any tequila or margs, but they sure look good, and the bar was busy. Our server, Greg, was wonderful and made sure our food came out quickly. The manager came to thank us for dining and ask if everything was okay, and the hostesses were welcoming. RuRu's is taking COVID-19 very seriously with all staff wearing masks, skipping every other table in the seating area, and providing large pumps of hand sanitizer. I'm thankful we didn't judge RuRu's solely on the Yelp star rating because we were satisfied with the food and service we got. I went here with my family right now to celebrate the end of a maybe too long vacation. After making a harrowing journey through the blowing sand tsunami i must say, i was famished. parched. exhausted. That is when we stumbled upon a glowing ray of sunshine, Ruru's Tacos plus tequila. We were swiftly seated and promptly greeted by dulling servers, which was odd, because the little one didn't talk, but that was fine, it would've been confusing anyway. After scouring the menu for many minutes i was confronted by some unusual naming techniques for the dishes. Whatever, really didn't bother me. I landed upon a little hidden gem: Snoop. A. Loop. Wow. After chowing down on queso that was aptly titled "beef" or something i saw my server carrying a plate of what turned out to be nachos that was approximately as big as your steering wheel. Wow. It was delicious. However, that's not relevant. My true question is: what is snoop and what is loop???? Now loop sounds similar to poop, so i am assuming that that would be the taco meat since they are similar in color. Now as for the snoop? I am not sure nor do i have anything close to a guess, but that is not my place because i am not the chef. The entire menu is movie quotes, love it! It was hilarious hearing my friend say she wanted a "stage five clinger". I ordered the chicken bowl it was just -okay. The rice was hard and another one of my friends said the same thing, "is your rice hard?" Yes it was. For a restaurant it was odd.. was it old rice from the day before? Stale? Undercooked? Such a weird mistake for a restaurant to make.. considering I had a chicken rice bowl all that I was eating was the rice and chicken so I ended up only eating the chicken. Fast service, though. I was super happy to find vegetarian options. I ordered a cauli taco and a tofu taco and both were seriously delish! My daughter ordered a pork belly carnitas burrito. It was massive! It was covered in queso and sauce. She'd have preferred it a little less "wet" but overall enjoyed it still. RuRu's Tacos + Tequila hands down my favorite place that I visited during my trip to Charleston. I stumbled across the restaurant while my family and I were on the hunt for food. We realized that we hadn't had Mexican food during this trip just just so it was the perfect place to check out. Because the weather was slated to rain that day the downtown area was nearly empty so we were the only customers in the restaurant for a solid hour. I later learned that when it rains in Charleston it is heavy so most residents know when to stay inside. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful. It is huge inside so you could easily come with whatever sized party and easily be accommodated. The staff from the moment we walked into the restaurant was super friendly and the bartender was very engaging. He even gave my sister a free birthday shot when we casually mentioned we were celebrating her birthday early. The menu is a standard Mexican restaurant catered towards tourists. You know the basic dishes would be fire but the more complex dishes probably wouldn't be the top priority for me to try. I settled on a quesadilla because it had grilled steak and a berry margarita. The food arrived pretty quickly and the drinks arrived quicker. The margarita was pretty tasty and the bartender added a fun smiley face to the second margarita that I ordered! The food was very delicious and the food servings are big. The quesadilla was easily two servings of food which was a plus for me because I was able to take the other half home to munch on later in the day. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at RuRu's Taco +. Tequila. I would highly recommend checking out the restaurant if you are visiting because you will learn a very gems about Charleston from the staff at the restaurant. read more

Three stars is generous. We spent the afternoon in the park and hubs wanted a margarita so we stopped in and sat at the bar on our way back to our hotel. The bartender was disgruntled and spent the entire hour plus we were there complaining about his job and other customers - both to himself and the other bartender that was there. He was nice enough to us, but it was such a dampener on our visit to be subjected to his mouth and bad attitude the entire time. He also asked us to close out our tab because he was leaving and wanted his tip, which was off putting to say the least. The vibe in there was so bad - hubs literally downed his last cocktail so we could leave. We ordered the steak nachos (Sorry I'm Not a Loser) and hubs got a few margaritas. The nachos were mediocre at best. They came out of the kitchen in like 3 minutes which was troubling. They were barely warm which was also annoying. Cold chips, cold steak, clunky cheese and topped with a ton of cold condiments. I get most of this is prepared already, but idk it was a scary fast amount of time. Nothing was offensive about it yet I have had better nachos at countless other places. Hubs said the margaritas were good - but still couldn't wait to get out of there. What something a little tamer on the wallet (Yes, it is possible in Charleston), with a little humor and good vibes RuRus is a great spot for both. You gotta love the names of their Taco plates, Burrito's and bowls "How do you like them apples", "Shirley you can't be serious" to "Fat Guy in a little coat", the names will have you reflecting on the entertainment world from yesteryear. Gotta love the combinations that bring to the tables, RuRus for sure brings a unique mixture of taste and south of the border plates to this great Charleston establishment. For instance pork belly in a burrito, "cilantro marinated steak" and for sure some vegan and vegetarian options as well. The Ahi Tuna salad is amazing and RuRu's has a full bar with some local craft beer to choose from as well at a full drink menu. They do have a Sunday brunch would sounded great as well. With our 3 little dudes, we were also thankful for the kids menu, which isn't always a guarantee at Charleston establishments, but RuRus caters to everyone and comes with good tastes as well, looks like they always have a special going on each day. As whenever we passed by their was something new out on the board enticing all of us hungry customers to try RuRus. The service was great with our young boys, trying to connect with them and keeping them entertained, you always appreciate that. RuRus did a great job. So with that, give it a go, clean, great decor and for sure in a good spot with lots going on right there on E Bay Street. If you are looking for Charleston finest, this isn't it, but you won't be disappointed either and RuRus does bring something a little different then your typical, taco, burrito place, after all your in Charleston you got push the envelope a little. My wife and I saw this sign yesterday and were excited to try it for dinner today. We got the trio app, which was good. Cheese was what you expect, the salsa is smokey, and the guac is good. We each ordered 3 tacos and tasted each others. Wife: It was the Dukes, You're Going the Wrong Way, But It's Shark Week (from bottom to top.) Me: Stage Five Clinger, Fat Guy in a Little Coat, Long Duck Dong (from bottom to top.) We really liked Five Clinger, which had a lot of flavor, and the Shark Week (Buffalo chicken), Dukes (pork), and Long Duck Dong (spicy beef) were good. The chicken was good on Wrong Way but the flavor got lost in the taco, IMO. Fat Guy (beef) was really plain. Overall, some hits and misses. We also got a couple drinks with mixed results: I Said Posse with mango because peach was out was delicious. The special was a pineapple jalepeno margarita was not very pineapple flavored and didn't taste good. Overall, I'm glad we came. Most of the food was pretty good. Nothing amazing, though. The chips with salsa, guacamole, and queso were perfect for sharing. The salsa was fresh and restaurant style (pureed). The guacamole had a good garlic taste. The queso was my favorite. I saw RuRus on the news yesterday for National Margarita day, which really made me one! However, we a 7 week old so we figured we'd wait a day later so places were less crowded. We were seated immediately. And the host said someone would be right over... The menu looked awesome! We decided we wanted tacos but like always I always ask the server what their favorites are and then make my finally decision. We waited a few more minutes and then the host ended up coming back to take our drink order, which was two margaritas and two waters. The margaritas were served in rocks glasses which has been the "norm" lately at most places, but they were very mediocre. For that size and 8-9 bucks a pop, I wanna taste some alcohol. Especially because we don't get out (with said 7 week old) much now. ;) My husband and I both ordered 3 tacos a piece. And we ordered the chips and salsa cause we were that hungry! The chips and salsa are homemade so you have to pay for them. They give a large bowl of salsa so I guess that's why too. Our tacos were a great size and appealing to the eye. Some were definitely better than others. We left full thanks to the chips. I'd like to say we'd be back... but 52 bucks; before tip, for a quick lunch, is A LOT for Mexican! I personally find using movie quotes for the title of each dish a little try-hard, but I could see how some people might think it's cute. It's smack in the middle of the cruise ship district, so keep that in mind. But if you're down there and need a beer and some killer nachos, you could do a lot worse. read more

This place was recommended to us by a friendly local so we decided to give it a try. You have the option of sitting indoors or outside but since it seemed to be about to rain we close to sit inside. Beware that the air conditioning was beyond cold, we were all freezing while we waited for our food. Our server Sydney was awesome, she was very friendly and had a great personality. Our table had a lot of dietary restrictions and she was great at explaining all the things in the menu. We ordered a variety of tacos along with the shrimp and steak quesadilla. My taco came with a cockroach inside of it (it's on the right of the plate)... the staff wasn't very apologetic or seemed to be phased at all. First it took almost 10 minutes to even have our drink order taken, no it wasn't busy at all. I got the Magic Mike and my friend got the Told You She Was Going To Yak, and 2 waters. They were both small but very yummy but it took asking again to get the waters. Then we ordered our food. My friend ordered the How Do You Like Them Apples burrito which she said was delicious but had far too much cheese. I ordered 2 tacos, the I'll Have What She's Having (grilled Mahi) and the Vegas Baby Vegas (seared Ahi tuna). First the tuna wasn't seared at all but then I just thought I was mistaken.... I was not. The menu says seared. The Mahi one was good but not great. Also, unlike every other Mexican place I've been to there were no chips and salsa offered at all. Our server was fine but really didn't have much personality.
