Coffee meh.. typical 3$ airport coffee. The worst is that I paid for it at the neighboring Thunder Club sandwich place and was directed to this place to pick up my coffee. I kid you not, Thunderclub shouted across the hall so they would serve my coffee. Coffee place decides to charge me again for the coffee. When I tell her I already paid, she demands a receipt. When I tell her I wasn't given one, she begins to lecture me like I SHOULD KNOW that when I buy a coffee at Thundersubs I should take my receipt to this place to collect it. WTF? Rude. It was basically hot foamy milk. - Button press espresso machine: check. Clearly this one needs to be calibrated. - Uninterested Barista: check and mate. The poor soul has to manage all the duties herself. Luckily it was an off peak hour (I assume). The zucchini bread earns them half a star. It was fresh and moist. Label says it's from Quack's. Really disappointed! One we arrived the Attendante was having a conversation with other airport employees and didn't take care of us till she was done with her personal conversation. When she finally asked us what we want to drink was like we were bothering her. She was very unprofessional and unpleasant. I know it's just airport coffee but, have a little pride in what you do and the place you work for. Jobs are though to find and people really take it for granted when they do have one. I have been to small coffee shops in Seattle airport that I had an amazing and genuine customer service and it's not just a cup of coffee it was an experience. I bought a cup of tea and sat down in one of their comfy chairs. Within five minutes a waiter came by and asked how long I planned to sit there, and informed me "this is not a Starbucks... this is a full-service business" - basically letting me know that buying a cup of tea did not warrant occupying a seat there. Near the Gate 7 is Java heaven. Austin's motto to "Keep it weird" had seeped through their airport. There are no major franchises to eat or drink. A slice of Austin's locality shines through the various stands with live musicians and their favored long horns memorabilia. There are two Austin Java's in the terminal. Lackluster java turned me away from Austin Java to Ruta Maya. However, this is worth a slice when connecting flights. Quality ingredients, water and beans brewed to balanced. Wasting time between destinations, I wandered with a soy chai latte in my hand soaking in the Austin southern flavor. Cardamom cinnamon swirled through the back of my throat. A great cafe should have a variety of syrups and Ruta Maya didn't let me down. An amaretto flavored latte to end my day. Simply sweet coffee walked the balanced beam holding flavor and coffee flavor. Not being one of the shiny lucky people who always get to skip the long, tiring, security lines only to relax in the comfort of a fluffy airport lounge, Ruta Maya is that special treat that awaits me after the stress of security pat downs and bag checks. The coffee here is always fresh and hot. Pastries are sent fresh from Quacks Bakery, and never disappoint. I can personally vouch for the chocolate almond croissant and chocolate chip scones -- totally delicious!! Additionally, since this is located a little farther from security than the flashy Austin Java, there is almost always a much shorter line, which at an airport, is always a big win! read more

This place might be in an airport, but it's one of the best cups of Chai I've had. The scone was okay, but I was in heaven for about 20 minutes sipping the chai latte. Ordered a large mocha in the evening while waiting for a 7:30 flight. I ordered the biggest size possible so I could pour most of it into a small 12 oz thermos to have on the plane then drink the rest while waiting in the airport. The barista was courteous, though not overly friendly. The big issue, however, is that she made the drink with so much foam when I poured the mocha into my thermos, it didn't even each 3/4 of the way up. This was meant to be a large and didn't even come up to 12 oz of liquid! I was very disappointed. Based on the reviews and my experience here, I will not return to this coffee shop next time I am flying out of this airport. read more

I went to the Ruta Maya in the Austin airport and the cashier Ana secretly changed the $1 tip I gave her to a $2 tip. She clearly didn't realize that I was going to ask for an itemized receipt because I was traveling for business and needed it for reimbursement. When I asked for it and looked it over she just stood there staring at me. I walked away debating whether to say anything while adding my sugar to my coffee and finally I decided to say something. I told her "You changed the tip?!?" She promptly responded "I can change it back" which made it clear to me she did it on purpose. Super shady and I am sure she is doing it to more people who never notice because they aren't looking at an itemized receipt and by the time it hits their credit card bill they don't remember the exact total. He Med this place out for a quick lunch before catching a flight. They have a Thundercloud Sub shop there and everyone knows if you come to Austin you gotta have one of their sandwiches. I ordered the California club not crazy about the name but the sandwich was tasty and huge. The sandwich came with avocado, bacon, turkey, and your selected veggies. I got the peanut butter cookie ant it was very good and one of the biggest I've seen or tried to eat. So passing through try this place it is worth it. read more

Good tasting organic coffee. Cold brew is delicious and strong! Staff is friendly, very helpful and delivers a great finished product. However, they are usually understaffed and seem to get bogged down heating breakfast sandwiches. It would be really cool if they had a breakfast line and also a "coffee only" line. So, I would say that my rating of this is probably not going to be 100% accurate because I just stopped at a little stand that happened to serve this coffee...AND if you walked a little further, you would find the actually like Ruta Maya coffee shop. The coffee was good, nice bold taste. Nicely priced, I think my large was $3? The coffee beans are sold in a cute canvas sac, which adds a nice little effect. The stand was dirty and understaffed. Had an 8am flight and we overestimated how long security would take so we had empty stomachs and an hour to kill. My roommate ordered a latte which somehow they were out of at 7am? They only had iced coffee. I ordered an everything bagel which looked and smelled good. Unfortunately the bread was so stale I could barely eat a few bites before tossing it. I went to a little stand between gates 6 & 7. They have an espresso machine, but the cappuccinos are kind of meh. Tasted more over roasted than any nice nutty or other flavors. Saw a sign saying they have another location at gate 19 too late. Only then did I notice that the pictures on yelp are of a proper storefront, not this little stand with equipment in closets. Maybe give that location a try instead of this one if you have the time to walk down there. read more

The cappuccino here is a hit or miss. No consistency means no training. I travel frequently and by comparison to other airport based coffee shops this one sucks. Took me 15 minutes to get a cappuccino with only 2 people ahead of me in line, i boarded my flight took a sip and cappuccino had burnt taste ! I cannot return it as i am on flight and had to trash it since it was undrinkable. And this has happened to me several times at this location. The austin java is also bad leaving no choice for a good cappuccino at AUS. Austin airport must read reviews here evaluate and fix. This reflects very poorly for a city like austin. I'm so happy to have in my hands a delicious double dirty chai and a muffin from Quack's Bakery! I have a long day of flights ahead of me, it's awesome that there's a place like this in the airport. The barista was friendly and cheery, and asked how dirty I wanted my iced chai. They also sell Kind bars and Brookside dark chocolate-covered goji berries, the perfect airplane snacks!
