I made a reservation for Valentines day and took my husband and my parents to Ruths Chris Steak House. It was a very busy day, full of traffic so we arrived a few minutes past our initial reservation (they give a 15 minutes grace period). I was relieved that Valet was included when you dine here so that took a lot of the headache of finding parking in downtown San Antonio. Service and Food: Our service and the food was swift and taken with great care. Our server was fantastic and really did a great job helping us figure out what to order for someone who was dining here for the first time. Our waiter even recommended my father who is peculiar about his steak (liked it rare, but the outside to be crispy) to order his steak Pittsburg Style which he ended up loving. My waiter was even kind enough to hand craft me my own Sangria when I noticed it wasn't on the menu. The food was absolutely amazing but overall I think our waiters great service really made our evening enjoyable. Im unsure if this was intentional but we noticed the staff was always considerate in making sure the ladies orders were taken first and served first before the men. It was a thoughtful gesture which was appreciated. Additionally the manager checked on each guest which was also nice to see. Overall, it was nice to see my family enjoy their dinner together. As a Local Guide whose Google photos have over 80 million views, I visit a lot of restaurants, and it pains me to say that Ruth's Chris has noticeably slipped. We stopped in for a business dinner expecting prime service and top-tier execution. While the steaks themselves were properly cooked, the rest of the meal fell completely flat. The appetizers and sides had a pre-made, mass-catered quality--closer to a chain like Chili's than a high-end steakhouse charging premium prices. Service was sluggish throughout the night. San Antonio's steakhouse market is wildly competitive right now. With so many incredible local spots delivering exceptional food and flawless service at this price point, Ruth's Chris simply isn't keeping up. I have to say, Ruth's Chris is overrated and I left pretty disappointed. When we arrived, there was a wait so we went to the bar for a drink and appetizer. The drinks were good, but the bartender wasn't friendly at all--he took our order but wasn't very pleasant. We ordered the veal ravioli and it really lacked flavor. Once we were seated, our waiter was amazing--no complaints there--and sitting by the river made for a beautiful ambiance. Unfortunately, the food itself was not great. Everything came out lukewarm and had to be sent back twice. My husband ordered the stuffed chicken breast with garlic mashed potatoes and corn, and it was actually the best dish of the night--flavorful and delicious. I had the lamb chops, creamed spinach, and lobster mac, and honestly I didn't enjoy any of it. Everything tasted bland, and the only thing I truly enjoyed was eating off my husband's plate. A delicious meal with top notch service! My husband and I made reservations for Ruth's Chris near the Riverwalk so we could enjoy a meal before going on a riverboat cruise. We arrived about an hour early due to rain outside and the host greeted us with a smile and seated us with no issue. Our waiter, Johnny Joe came by and introduced himself, took our drink order, and shared some information about the menu. Since we have eaten at Ruth's Chris before, we knew what we wanted- steak. The warm bread arrived followed our salads. My husband ordered a NY strip and I had the petite steak. So incredibly tender and delicious! The garlic mashed potatoes are also a must. Just reminder that one order of the potatoes is plenty for two or even three people. The manager Frank came around to each table to introduce himself and check on the customers. It was such a nice touch. He and my husband had a little fun chatting about the Dallas Cowboys. Seems like everyone in Texas is a die hard Cowboys fan but we didn't hold that against Frank. We overheard Jarvis working with the table near us and he was enthusiastic and very personable as well. Our 40 ounce porterhouse was cooked to perfection and the potatoes AJ gratin are always spot on. We had reservations for a Wednesday night, and absolutely didn't need them on this night - only about four tables were occupied while we were there. The lobster Mac and cheese was light and the addition of streamed broccoli was perfect for our family. My NY strip was seasoned to perfection and cooked perfectly. My daughter's chicken was very savory and my wife's fish was super good as well. I want to say it was halibut but not positive. But I am positive it was tasty! This is my first time dining in a Ruth's Chris. We planned a lunch meeting with some clients here and it's very lovely inside! Somehow with an empty restaurant all the tables were full so we were advised to sit in the bar. We snagged a 4 top high top table, had waters served and menus delivered immediately. They offer a prefix lunch menu which looks fantastic if you're really hungry. We shared the calamari which is the best I think I've ever had, and the shrimp appetizer. 2 of us ordered salads that came with the cutest tiniest piece of filet, one had the ravioli and one a petite filet. Went to dinner on a Monday night. They have happy hour until 6:30pm in their bar. Complimentary valet, which is an added benefit of dining in the downtown location...not having to pay for parking. Jarvis and Isaac were our servers and they were both amazing! Jarvis started out with giving us a little bit of history about Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. I have been to Various locations multiple times, but this was the first time I heard the story. Such a great touch which made me more invested in my meal. All of the food was delicious. We started with a dozen oysters, they were west coast. We ordered grilled asparagus and the brussels for the table with our meal and both were delicious. We got a bottle of Caymus Cab and it was perfect with our meal. i got the two petite fillets with shrimp and my dining partner got the lamb chops with oscar shrimp and we were both very satisfied with our meals. we didn't take any pictures because we were intentional about being tech free at dinner but there wasn't anything we ordered that we were unhappy with. I don't know why this location is so hit or miss? 6 of us went for Happy Hour right when they opened. They took drink orders quickly, handled special requests great, they didn't rush the dining experience. I honestly thought, "Wow, after all the years of coming here, they have turned the corner." Then... It was like we were a ghost table. The prefix desserts took forever (strawberry shortcake) and the bills even longer. It is such a shame that this location cannot get it's act together. He was very personable, introduced himself as well as asking who he had the pleasure of serving. Jarvis gave us a short history of himself, his career with Ruth Chris and then told us all about how Ruth Chris came about. Jarvis went through the menu with us, got us cocktails then took our orders. Jarvis truly made our dinner what it was which was a true great experience. While waiting for our meal which ill tell you about in a minute, we were served a plate of Voodoo Shrimp which we did not order but found out layer it was a mistake but we should enjoy it regardless. I ordered The small Filet, Medium Rare w/Brussel Spouts. Honest the Brussel Spouts were just middle of the road, nothing great in fact I do them better myself at home but The Filet was cooked perfectly and was so tender it literally melted in your mouth. My wife also ordered a Filet medium well with Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Asparagus to share. Again her Filet was also cooked to perfection but the sides lacked, I make better asparagus and mashed potatoes at home myself. I've always heard great things about this place, but never have had the opportunity to try it. Until now. My wife fancied a nice meal and night on the Riverwalk. She had previously had Ruth's Chris in California and said it was amazing. Sounds great! Let's do this, I said. So, I made reservations online for 7:15 PM, then away we went the next day. We arrived and checked in with the hostess. I gave her my name, she looked at her computer screen confused, then told me to wait while my table was prepared. We then went and sat down and waited. Other parties came in, checked in, then cluttered the waiting area. Other parties who came in after were starting to be seated before us, so I went to make sure the hostess checked me in correctly. Another man was asking the hostess the same question as I approached the stand. Luckily, another hostess assured us both of us had been checked in correctly. The hostess asked us later if we wanted to sit in the bar area, or the main dining area. Me, not being a fan of bar flies, opted for the main dining area for a more intimate setting. Intimate with my spouse, and not complete strangers as they booze it up. At 7:20 PM, the first confused hostess called our name, and went to seat us. Luckily, we were patient, so no big deal on the late seating. We walked into the dining room and it was very fancy, and dimly lit. The hostess looked a little clumsy like she did not know her way around the dining room. She initially tried to seat us at a table with a setting for about 10 people. Awkward, but ok, I guess. She regrouped, told us to hold on a second, then peeked around the corner and found our table. She seated us, wished us a good meal, and left. I'm guessing she must be new. No big deal. We were greeted by our waiter for the evening. Luis asked what the special occasion was, to which we told him it was our anniversary. He asked how many years, made some pleasant small talk, then took our drink orders. He asked about appetizers, to which we declined, so he went to grab our drinks while we perused the menu. Shortly thereafter, Luis returned with our drinks and took our order. The wife ordered a house salad, and the filet. I decided on the 16 ounce ribeye, and a side of potatoes au gratin. The wife ordered her steak medium, while I asked Luis if there was such thing between medium rare and medium. Luis said medium rare "plus" was the ticket, and wrote it down. Luis brought us some fresh baked bread, to which we ate fast. The wife's salad came after and the wife said it was pretty tasty. After a long wait, our steaks arrived. With this being a prime steak, this was to be expected. No big deal. Plus, the wife's company with no children was nice. My steak looked very delicious, time to cut into this bad boy. I cut into it, and it cut smooth like butter. Uh oh, a bit overcooked. The steak was medium, and borderline medium well. Well, so much for the medium rare plus. Not wanting to wait for a whole new steak, I decided to eat it anyhow. Now, the wife cut into her steak. Uh oh, again. Her steak was medium rare. My wife cannot stand the sight of a bleeding steak. We told Luis the kitchen mixed up the preparation of our steaks. Luis said he could fix the wife's steak "in less than a minute," and would be right back. He mentioned moving my plate to adjust the temperate to fix mine, but I think he did not understand mine was overcooked. I'll eat a steak that is medium and below, so I gave Luis the benefit of the doubt, as it was not his fault and told him not to worry. Luis took the wife's steak and returned to the kitchen. Just over 5 minutes later, Luis returned with the wife's steak, dropped it off, and left. The wife cut into it. Uh oh, again. The steak was still mooing, and the wife was not happy. She begrudgingly consumed the steak. We both enjoyed the potatoes au gratin, as it was amazing. To this point, due to the high price of the steak, we were very disappointed the kitchen could not get the preparation right. Up to now, things were shaping up to be a three star review. Luis returned after we finished, collected the plates and began to inquire if we wanted dessert. Right as I was going to order the cheesecake, Luis said he was not going to let us order dessert and he had something for us. He went to the kitchen, came back, and treated the wife and I to a delicious personal sized cheesecake. Well played, Luis. Well played. One star was tacked back on. The cheesecake was absolutely amazing. While it seems there were a few hiccups tonight, I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt. I am still a little hacked off I paid a ton of money for steaks that were under and overcooked. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves last night for HH at their River Walk location. Ruth's is down the escalator in the lower level of the Grand Hyatt, adjacent to the River. We seek out Ruth's Chris whenever we travel since we very sadly lost our local RC outpost due in part to Covid. This location is now our favorite due to many factors including their HH 7 days/week & 3-6:30pm. We prefer to eat early so HH works best for us. This location's HH menu was quite expansive vs other RC locations we've visited around the country. We've never seen Cajun Potato Chips on their HH menu before so those were a must and did not disappoint. I ordered a side blue cheese dressing for dipping and that was a splendid idea. Progressed to a Caesar Salad, Voodoo Shrimp & a Burger w/fries. We shared all items and ate a lil too much cuz it was all too delicious. Portions were very good & everything seasoned and dressed just right. We particular loved their large U-shaped bar with plenty of large comfy barstools with adequate knee room. This is not the case at all RC bars so we appreciated the thoughtful design of this bar. The ambiance was pretty perfect too; lighting, decor, colors etc and the lovely portrait of Ruth herself was also appreciated. Minor complaints not worth mention but I will include them for your consideration only; the route to the restrooms is through the dining room, not awkward for us as bar patrons but if I were spending $$$ on a fine dining experience in the main dining room I would not be happy with the parade of restroom traffic past my table. The absence of paper toilet seat covers in the ladies room was also of unfortunate note. Let's move on to more good news....I really enjoyed their d-lish Raspberry Rosemary Cosmo, I'm pretty sure it was only $10 on HH. It was quite refreshing & yummy and I could have easily had two but since we had a long return walk, decided to be wise and have a glass of wine instead. What sets our experience apart from standard and the reason for my review, is the wonderful service received from our charming bartender *CHELSEA*. From initial to departure, Chelsea provided outstanding service. She followed our cue on our timing desires, took our orders, ensured all were tasty and accurate, offered drink refills and checked back frequently without being obtrusive. Waiting tables is an art which involves an enormous skill set including a high level of emotional intelligence and Chelsea possesses all qualities. Look up the definition of emotional intelligence and the attributes are those of a successful person, including bartenders and servers. We cannot wait to visit this location again.
