Came in today, a Sunday during memorial weekend. Was seated by very polite men as soon as we walked in (I booked a reservation). When seated we were given water, salad and some pita. The salad and pita were great! However, we were never asked if we wanted anything to drink other than water. They did have a small fridge in the back that I assume people just got up and got their own drinks, just an assumption though. I ordered the Sabry Combo which came with Calamari, shrimp and Salmon. My shrimp was cold, salmon was tasty, and calamari was just in-edible. It was so overcooked it was hard to swallow. The wait for the actual entrees were long but the sides made up for it. Overall I would not return. The food was OK, but if you want real tasty seafood, id head over to Astoria seafood for a real treat! read more

This is THE place to go for Egyptian seafood. Period. Since I stumbled upon Sabry's about half a year ago, I have been back a handful of times and it never disappoints! My go to dishes are Baba Ganoush, Grilled Octopus, and Taojine Calmari (or Shrimp). Just writing them down made me drool lol. I also saw a lot of people order this big grilled/bbq fish dish, so I will definitely try that next time. You won't go wrong here! read more

Been to Steinway a couple times this place caught my eye because it's middle eastern seafood. The mixed seafood platter which has scallops, shrimp, crab legs, and fried fish have to say it was amazing. They give you fresh Arabic bread and a salad for 25$ and the hot sauce goes well. Horrible experience - I wish Yelp could implemented negative rating system! We came with a restaurant.com gift certificate. We called before we went to to make sure the coupon can be applied. The person who picked up the phone hesitated for a while but told me to come and I could use it. It turned out that I did not use it at all! Why?! Because I did not even have foods there. Well, to be precise, I only had salad - a plate of veggie that they intended to charge $10.74. We completed our order at around 8:55pm. We asked the waiter how long it would take. He said 10-15 mins for the whole meal to come. That sounded reasonable. We waited until 9:40pm...The waiter never came to our table to explain anything though we kept waving our hands for attention...If the restaurant is house fulled, then I can understand. However, there were only 1 table of customers inside and another table of customers inside. The waiter finally came and said " "It will come soon" We completely lost our appetite to dine in there and asked to cancel the order. The waiter said "5 mins". We said if it did not come then we really wanted to go. The waiter just smiled...another 9 minutes past...foods still did not come...We were about to go and the waiter got worked up. He kept saying "so you make me pay this meal?" But we really lost our appetite to dine in this place. If the services were good or the waiter at least came and gave us updates, we did not mind eating there...but none of these happened. We simply wanted to paid what we ate - salad, and went back home. Then the waiter told us that we did not need to pay...we were a bit surprised because one second ago he just argued with us about the money we should pay. So, we just walked out. Then he came after us outside of the restaurant and said "you really make me pay this?" "Ok, you now need to pay salad..." So, whether we should pay or not is based on his mood? We did not mind paying since we did have salad which should come with the meal... They kept saying we make foods from scratch. Don't get me wrong. I never question whether they make foods from scratch or not. But grilling a salmon takes you almost 45 minutes? Does making from scratch include fishing and killing the fish? The foods may be good (salad is just ...salad, I can make out if it is good). This place does not respect its customers for sure. read more

A lot of my friends recommended Sabry's, but after the one time I went I don't think my wife and I will be going back. Usually I will give a restaurant at least 2-3 tries before I say it's bad, but I had a few problems with our experience that won't incline me to return. - When we got seated, the waiter walked away before taking a drink order or anything. We waited about five or six minutes before I tried to flag him down so we could get water. He said he'd be right with us. The restaurant was mostly empty, so I didn't understand what the issue was. Five minutes later he came back and asked what we wanted to drink finally and brought us our water. - We asked to start off with the hummus dip, and he brought it without pita or anything. I asked where the bread was, and he said he would fetch it (there's a trend here). He came back to take our entrée order, I asked where the bread for the hummus was, he said, "Oh right, I'm sorry, I'll get it after I take your order." He took our order then disappeared again. He brought the bread as we were finishing our entrée. - The big thing for me was the place the fish were. They were on an ice bed in a display case, which isn't usually a big deal, but this was an open air display case (it honestly looked like the kind of display that has a heater in the bottom to display cooked chickens at a grocer), and there were flies all over the fish. Right before I'm about to eat fish I watched the cook take from this display. And there was one fish I saw the cook pull out, look at, and throw away. Comforting. - Top all this off with the price, which was expensive. I knew we were going out for a more fine dining experience, so I'm not complaining about paying good money at a nice restaurant; but with all the money I'm paying, I kind of expect better service and to feel like the place is cleaner. read more

The salad that came with the entree was served 5 minutes before the entrees arrived so we didn't really get to enjoy them. We ordered the seafood combination for two, the portions were generous but there really isn't nothing special. Everything is bland. The lobster is tasteless so are the scallops and the shrimps and don't even get me started on the fish. I love seafoods so I know a good one when I eat it. This place is such an insult to the seafood community! Shame! The lobster came out rubbery, it was overcooked! Ugh. Such a waste! The rice was terrible. I can't even chew it. How can they let that out in their kitchen? The lemonade was bitter and warm because it had like 3 pieces of tiny ice. The pita bread were delicious but we had to remind them TWICE for them to finally bring it out. The waiters were very inattentive. They purposely try to avoid eye contact so they wouldn't have to service you, what the hell is that? They didn't even offer water at the end of the meal. No tissue either we had to ask for it like really? Even getting the check takes effort, my Mom had to stand up and make hand gestures for a good minute just to catch their attention. They serve you lobsters without the crackle? Was I supposed to crack it with my teeth or my hands perhaps? Really disappointed. I wish we had gone somewhere else. Almost didn't leave a tip either. The kitchen is almost an open area where you see everything being prepped right in front of you. Even the bread, it's served right out of the oven. It's actually the only Middle Eastern Seafood restaurant that comes to mind when I crave a heartwarming seafood meal. It takes me about an hour drive to get to queens, so that only proves I wouldn't take that trip if the food is not worth it. I've introduced so many people to Sabry's and they were all impressed with quality of food and service. I usually order the fried stripped sea bass and shrimp scampi. What a delight. Located in an authentic Arabic section of Astoria with a nice neighborhood vibe across the street from the local Mosque, I stumbled across their quaint outdoor sidewalk food patio because of the delicious looking whole fish that were on the plates of the many satisfied looking customers seated there. No alcohol here folks; remember, it's all about the food and the atmosphere. Plenty of assorted fruit drinks, non-alcoholic beer, and large glasses of cold water with fresh lemons! Our waiter was from Egypt, was very courteous, bringing back a wonderful order of grilled octopus marinated in olive oil and basil. Pita bread was served from the onset with a nice salad and was soft and warm. The striped bass, whole, was cooked to perfection, and large. We couldn't finish it all after all the food we had up to that point, and took the half of it home as a special treat later. Our final bill for all of this wonderful Mediterranean food was only 49.00 before tax and tip, over two people. I can't say enough about my first impression of this place. Definitely will go back again. This should be THE spot to visit if you want something different outside Manhattan, a secret little gem in a nice little neighborhood. i have been a customer for years-back when the owner did the cooking and greeting. i brought a friend after regaling him with tales of branzino grilled whole and hot puffy bread. the bread was not puffy and the fish was split so not as moist as usual. i was disappointed and embarrassed. i doubt that i shall go back. too bad. the food was great and the old man a charmer. read more

Great authentic Egyptian seafood! We ordered fried fillet, grilled Sabry combo, and tahini . If there's more than 5 stars we would have given it. The grilled salmon was buttery and moist . The fried fillet wasn't oil filled deep fried but lightly breaded and retained amazing flavor. They have amazing fresh Egyptian bread served with the appetizers. Mainly hummus babaghanoush grilled shrimp a couple different whole grilled fish salad and tahina the pita is baked fresh and is delicious. The shrimp and fish always grilled to perfection. This may be THE seafood place in Astoria now. Came in with expectations of a good meal based on pictures and prior reviews, but left thoroughly impressed. The aroma of olive oil and grilled fish were intoxicating upon opening the door and it was then that I knew we would be in for a treat. What also stands out is that the fish is kept on ice in front of the open grilling area. Everything we ordered, Sabry's knocked it out of the park. The smoky eggplant puree and the succulent grilled octopus were perfect appetizers. But more on that octopus...it was one of the best that I've had this side of the Mediterranean. Perfect mix of light char flavor, delicate oregano and perfect amount of olive oil. Blows the octopus from Taverna Kyclades out of the water! The grilled calamari was a stand out...very light dish with the right amount of charring and nice amount of fresh olive oil. The grilled bronzini was excellent and I highly recommend ordering it this way so that you can really appreciate the spice and flavor of the fish itself. You have what sounds like your standard illusion of choice between fries and rice, but the latter surpassed what minimal expectations that I had for it and was full of flavor (still can't put my finger on what was in it). Fresh house-baked pita is another nice touch and is excellent for sopping up any residual olive oil, or taojine sauce if you decide to go down that route. Sabry's is a great place to start off a night in Astoria, as you can work your way down Steinway to smoke hookah (keep it authentic and hit up El Khayam for a classic experience) and then further south. read more

This place is good for seafood, I wouldn't say great as nothing here stood out from other restaurants of this profile. The service is also typical to this type of establishment, but very friendly. The fresh Pita is awesome. The 5th star is missing because of value. I guess I just need to come to terms that Astoria is not an extension of the city and prices will not vary much, unless there is some unique circumstance involved, such as the restaurant owner also owning the building which is super rare these days. I should have read the previous reviews better. I know this is a Muslim hood and respect it completely. I have plenty of Muslim friends, but they are all bigger drunks than me. Maybe they should buy this place out. NO BOOZE, NO BYOB. for me that means.... Will NOT return. read more
