The problem here is either they are understaffed, or they just don't care anymore, or both. There needs to be more checkers at the registers at all times of the day. At least twice as many. This Safeway gets a bad rap for many deserved reasons, but I should start out with the big overall positive: The store is almost always spotlessly clean and the cashiers are friendly and professional. Here's what sucks: * entering the parking lot from eastbound Shoreline is impossible, thanks to a concrete barrier in the median. I don't know why businesses in the plaza haven't pressed the Mountain View zoning commission to create a turning lane here. * The parking lot itself is a congested nightmare... full of obstacles, slow pedestrians who are completely indifferent to what's going on around them, and distracted drivers backing in and out of really tight spots. * The produce and deli areas are laid out poorly and difficult to navigate during peak hours. * The most basic of food and pharmacy staples, like hydrogen peroxide (six days as of today), are often out of stock for days at a time. DO NOT depend on this store for staples when you're in a pinch. Do not expect managers to express shock or surprise, or to make you feel validated in your own shock or surprise, when you address these issues with them. * Staffing during peak hours is abysmal. Getting assistance at customer service takes an eternity during any time of the day, but especially during rush hour. Same goes for any general shopping assistance. You will find nobody to help you. Even if you do, they are almost always running to check on something on behalf of another request, often at the expense of a line being held up in the front. In fact, if you pay close attention, you will notice people waiting until their turn at checkout to ask for assistance, and then the cashier calling whomever on the intercom to resolve whatever issue. Often times, such requests lead to a cashier having to leave their post and deal with price checks and stock issues themselves. * Which leads to the final and single biggest gripe: The lines at checkout are unacceptably long during rush-hour and often during any time of the evening. They often seem shorthanded, which can be the only logical reason why three lines would be backed up into the aisles and a fourth cashier is not called up to help meet the demand. On dozens of occasions I have arrived at the register with just a few items, only to simply abandon the shopping trip upon realizing that there will be a 20 minute wait. * CHECKOUT LINES ARE OFTEN BACKED UP IN THE EVENING. Did I already say that? When this happens, you will not be given any relief. Mismanagement, more than anything else, is the root cause of why this Safeway is so horrible. But it also has to do with fellow shoppers not doing enough to make the system work for everybody. So please, fellow shoppers, when it's finally your turn at the line, be nice to the shorthanded cashier who is just trying to get through their day without being griped and barked at. PLEASE help bag your own groceries, especially if you are healthy, able-bodied, and undistracted with children and such. Please also walk more briskly and deferentially through the parking lot and don't jam up automobile traffic just because you can. And in general, try to just avoid this place at night and during evening rush-hour. read more

Most poorly run store I have ever shopped. Been in 2 days in a row to order a simple birthday cake. Both times I was told that there was not a single employee in the store competent enough to place the cake order. The manager Bette was completely useless. She couldn't even give me the phone number of her supervisor ( which is just the store phone number) without looking it up in her flip phone. They are always completely understaffed. Slow! Super slow. It took me about 20 minutes to wait in the checkout lane. There selection of produce is incomplete so getting a onion or some garlic will be very difficult for you. Some of the workers are quite lazy to be honest. I'm surprised they even have a meat department! Cheers! read more

This used to be a great store. But lately going to Safeway has morphed into a Soviet-style shopping experience. The lines are VERY long every single time I have visited in the past few months,no matter what time of day I shop. What happened? The lines are suddenly just as long at the Miramonte store also. Dear Management, umm...what's up? Are your corporate overlords forcing you to cut staff? I used to hate going to Costco, but now it's a more pleasant experience than shopping at Safeway. Huge lines very often in the evenings. It's such a consistent problem, I'm unsure how management fails to make any changes. They must be looking to save a few bucks by not keeping enough cashiers on staff? Bought Tuscan tomato & basil bisque last night. Thought it would be wonderful. Tasted like Chef Boyardee's canned spaghetti sauce. Horrible. Taking it back today. I like some of the employees, others you smile and they look like they hate their life! Christina, Natasha and Nick are all very pleasant and helpful while still being quick and efficient. I wish I knew the name of the cart people, they are also very pleasant and helpful. Usually at Safeways people are very cheerful and happy. Only half of the staff here is that way. It seems to be under a change of management which is making people a little disgruntled. There shelves are always fully stocked and their displays are always beautiful. Especially floral. read more

Line is always long at this location even when there's no one in the store. I have learned to avoid this store but seriously sometimes you just forget something and need it right away.... and there you stand in the line for 15 minutes just to purchase some eggs...staffs are friendly though. read more

I like this Safeway, located in the Bailey Park plaza, better than many others I have shopped at, including the Newark location I sometimes availed. Better selection than some, but I find I'm having to "learn" locations in this store as they're more different than other stores. This is the closest location to my home; on the way to and from work, I actually like the mid-town Palo Alto store better in that its smaller and quicker to get around, but doesn't always have the choices I need. read more

Having pottered over to the US, it took me a little while to find a grocery store that I wanted to do on a weekly basis but when I found this Safeway, I fell in love. They always have everything I want, even the "weird english stuff I like to cook with" and their deli, sushi bar and produce sections are pretty darn impressive. I took a star off of em because we bought some vacuum packed lamb once which caused projectile puking just on the smell when we opened the package and because every piece of fish I have ever bought here definitely has something "fishy" to it. Other than that, I can hit everything on my grocery list here and I am a shopper of convenience and hate having to do umpteen spots so yay for Safeway. read more

I forgot my club card, and I don't remember the numbers since I got the card like 20 years ago. The checker would not help me out, she would not give me the sale price because I didn't have my card. I even asked if I can just get a new card and she said that is impossible because I told her I already had a card. Terrible customer service! The friendly person in line behind behind me was nice enough to give me her card. So unreasonable! The total savings was like 25% off the total bill, so this was not an insignificant amount of money. read more

Safeway is large chain of grocery stores on the west coast. There's literally hundreds of these things and overall I like them. In layout, pricing and stock this one is indistinguishable from every other Safeway. However, there's just something off about this location. It's not any one thing, it's a series of small things that can totally nudge your experience from "that was okay" to "WTF?". The parking lot is really not laid out well. Lots of small spaces with tight corners and high volume traffic. The store is one of the mid size layouts, and it seems a little cramped. This can lead to miniature scavenger hunts for the specific item you want. For example the tostito's bean dip may be with the other bean dips, in with the salsa, in the chip aisle, or with the condiments. HA! just kidding. It's on an end cap. On my last visit the three aggravations were the sales flyer-I picked it up at the one entrance that had it on display, conveniently located at the opposite entrance to the a one I entered at, and in my quick read over I totally failed to notice that it was a week out of date. The second aggravation was at the olive bar, which had the containers to put olive type items in, with a plu code helpfully tacked on. Alas, they only stacked the bottom half of the containers, not the top. The resolution offered by the staff? Go get one from the deli counter. The one with 11 people standing in line. Of course they had failed to re-stock most of the five dollar friday items. They had them, but you needed to go back the deli counter line. It's like this every visit, a small aggravating series of tiny things that add up. For awhile I thought this was an employee issue, but having interacted with them and their front line supervisors I'm not convinced this is the whole problem. The client facing staff are helpful, kind and some (not all) really try. But something's totally off kilter here. Maybe the store is cursed. read more

I normally wouldn't bother reviewing a regular old grocery store, but this is hands down the best Safeway or any non-high end grocery store I've found. They tend to stock items you can't find at most other grocery stores - my multi-city, multi-state quest for Reese's Pieces ended here for example - and their staff is pretty cool and helpful for a grocery store, creating a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Even if you happen to be a littly tipsy, they'll guide you right through the checkout process and even help you get one of those annoying Safeway cards to boot. read more

Safeways all have same policies, rules etc but the lines at shoreline at night are HORRIBLE!! Employees are ok just the way things are run her is a bit??? Other safeways would have another cashier in the nearby aisle incase line gets long. Here they let a line pile up enough for 3 cashiers before they call a second cashier. Recently had the fried chicken from here and its way too salty need to cut down on the salt. When you eat em ya gots to peel the batter and skin off or you'll have a heart attack. Now I know why I stopped buying fried chicken from safeway deli. I wonder if the employees ever taste the food when they cook em. read more

This place needs to be staffed up ASAP. I came here on a Friday night and the lines to pay for items are 10 people deep. There is no sense of urgency with any of these employees and I spent 20 minutes in line to wait to pay for my items. This is unacceptable. read more

what to say about safeway? well, this is the one closest to where i live and also very centrally located, as i can easily pop in on my way home from work. the merchandise is neatly organized and there are separate sections for the deli and bakery. staff is generally very polite and respectful. parking is plentiful, but watch out for weekday rush hour as the lot fills up very quickly and you may have to "stalk" customers who appear to be leaving to see if you can take their space. read more

If I could rate this a 1/2 star I would. I came in a few weeks early to order cupcakes and cake for an event. I called a few days before the event to add more cupcakes and they couldn't find my order and assured me they would make it right. Since I was speaking to the manager about this, I felt okay submitting the order. I requested a 10 pack of cupcakes as well as a 24 pack and a 8" double cake. I requested a mermaid theme colors but no toys/ sea picks ect. I requested this because I had a personalized cake topper. Had someone pick up the order and got a overly decorated cake with "Happy Birthday " super crowded. Also only 10 cupcakes. I called and they didn't have any explanation, just that only 10 was on the order and the baker had already left. I had requested whipped cream frosting and they put buttercream. We had to scramble to find more cupcakes, but I'm never going back to Safeway bakery for a order again. read more

Must say there are times when the line gets long BUT give it some time and someone will come and open a line. Safeway, as always, has very fresh and appetizing produce and meat. The store is clean and its location is convenient for stopping off 101 on our way home from church. Unfortunately, they do not have bulk items, which I've come to enjoy at the other locations. My BIG PROBLEM with this location is the training of baggers. When you don't know both not to mix raw meat with produce (the bagger) or that you don't put egg cartons on their side (the cashier), I must seriously consider whether it's just not worth going here for convenience. read more

i don't know why anyone would look up grocery stores on yelp before going to them, but here goes... this safeway is the worst i've ever been to! usually i'm a fan and i have a pleasant experience there, but this one is pretty blah. the employees are all pretty unfriendly and some are even outright rude, darting in front of your cart and not excusing themselves, and not greeting you whatsoever at the checkstand. i even saw a bunch of employees gathered at a table outside of the store, smoking and cussing like no tomorrow....and the guy cussing the most clearly had a managerial position in the store, hence his white blouse. sheesh! stay far from this store if you can help it! read more

Worst service ever. Multiple times I've had to wait in line over 15 minutes at the cashier. There are often more than 10 people in line with only one or two cash registers is open. You'd think they'd ask for some of the other employees to man the cash registers, but no. The Safeway on San Antonio is pretty close.
