I literally live across the street from this Safeway, and choose to drive across town to a different grocery store because the service here is so awful. But before I made that life-improving decision, this is what I observed: 1. There is always a line and it is always long. No matter what time of day you go, you will wait a minimum of 10-20 minutes in line. 2. The employees clearly do not want to be there, and do not want to make your experience pleasant. I never got a smile, a hello, nothing from the cashiers. 3. If you can't find something in the store and need help, you are on your own. They don't have anyone on the floor to answer questions or assist. I once needed a bag to put my loose produce in, and EVERY single produce bag dispenser was empty. I walked around for several minutes to find someone, and ended up giving up and getting a flower bag from the floral area! read more

This isn't a huge Safeway but it has everything you need. The queues at the checkouts are never long and the staff are friendly. There is a Starbucks attached for those that find shopping so harrowing they need a caffeine fix to get through the trauma. A recent discovery for me is the sandwich bar inside. They have a fixed price $5 sandwich with a good range of toppings. The best part is - you buy 7 and get the next one free (when purchased with your club card). As for the people complaining about prices, get yourself a club card and buy on special. It isn't that hard. My favourite brands are often on special 3 out of 4 visits. read more

This Safeway has all of the basics. If you live nearby and you want groceries, you'll get them. It's cheaper than Whole Foods or the other nicer grocery stores, but there's a lot less nice stuff, like good quality meats. Don't buy meat here unless you're OK with low quality. The produce is OK. It's a little run down compared to most of the alternatives. It's not bad by a long shot, but just not that nice compared to some other nearby Safeways in the Bay. The checkout line is very slow. Just now, there were a dozen people in the express line. It's pretty typical. Last time, there was just a single checker, and I had to walk out. It's faster then Wal-Mart, but barely, and Wal-Mart is cheaper. The only reason to go to this store is if it's much closer to you than Wal-Mart and Target. But the long lines will probably erase most of the closeness. Because this place seems chronically understaffed, it can be difficult to get someone to help you. Once I had to wait over half an hour for help at the liquor cabinet. Sometimes in the evening, it's especially hard to get help at the customer service area. Good luck getting razor blades. They're cheaper elsewhere anyway. They take Sumsung Pay and Android Pay (latter untested), which is nice. They don't take Apple Pay. The chip and pin readers are slow and glitchy, but I guess that's the norm in most stores. read more

This is the worst Safeway I've ever been to. It's known by everyone as the "crappy Safeway" and for good reason. The seafood always smells bad, the fruit is already spoiled, the vegetables go rotten within 48 hours of getting home. This Safeway is a great place to get a sandwich. Which was exactly what I was thinking as I pulled into the parking lot. I used the restroom, and it a bit out of sorts. This Safeway location was okay when I came here to pick up a few grocery items. The parking lot had a lot of spaces even during the rush hour time. The produce section was on the far right side of the store with the bakery on the far left side of the store. There were quite a few people here buying groceries after work as a lot had their work badges on them. The aisles were organized as we walked through to find what we needed. There was a Starbucks at the front of the store so there was a line blocking part of the walkway. The express lines (15 items or less I believe) were not too long. I stayed away for a month and then today I caved. It's just the most convenient. Wish I hadn't though. Two check stands out of ten are open for regular shopping. Hire more people to staff the check stands! It is a Friday evening. This is a difficult I one as the staff works hard, is friendly and extremely helpful. Lemme take you through a typical trip to this store. Park, usually plenty of parking, walk towards the doors. Do you need a cart? Well, there's a 40% chance of finding one at the corral by the door - as in it is empty more often than not. Pro tip: grab a cart from the parking lot on the way in. Go through the doors - but did you choose the doors on the left? Oh man, good luck because if there's a line at the starbucks counter it is quite a maze to go around by the deli. And if you decide to keep going towards the bakery? Well, the crowded mix of bakery displays and precariously placed wine displays is just ASKING for you to knock that stuff over with your unwieldy cart. Let's go to the dairy section, where you may or may not successfully find the milk, heavy cream, whipped cream that you were looking for. Pro tip: Set the cart aside in maybe the dairy/beer aisle and explore the bakery section on foot. If you go look in the yogurt section your options are Dannon, Yoplait, or Chobani, with diminishing other options. Did you want Dannon, Yoplait, or Chobani? Then you're in luck. If you wanted something else like, say, Liberte french-style yogurt? That's mostly miss, sometimes it's there. Like that dancing frog from old warner bros cartoons. The pharmacy has no room for waiting, so if people are in line to see the pharmacist - they are probably blocking that walkway along the back of the store. That's a cf. The middle aisles (cookies, canned goods, cereals) are pretty narrow, if your aisle is crowded just abandon your cart in a less crowded aisle and grab what you need on foot. The meat selection is pretty good and we've always had nice butchers so I'm not gonna bag on that section. I think if you plan ahead they can order or set aside special cuts for you. The produce section is ok if not overpriced. I've never had problems with produce quality, it's just pricey compared to say, Milk Pail Market. Ah, now to get out of that hell hole. There seems to have been no forethought into how to organize that whole front end of the store- there's room for about 2 people in line, and a third cart will completely block the front walkway. There's a consistent lack of cashiers, causing the line for one register to either curve along that front area, causing absolute gridlock - or people will start breaking the line to create a walk-through and continue the line in the aisles (which sucks for those aisles that I mentioned earlier were too narrow.) The one star is because I have never had a problem with the staff (they have always been kind and hard-working and are clearly doing their best while being spread too thin). And also because i'm not able to give ZERO STARS. This place is always a sh*tshow. **Safeway Corporate: HIRE MORE PEOPLE, or GIVE THE CURRENT EMPLOYEES MORE HOURS. Every time I go (doesn't matter what time) there are only 2 registers open and the lines stretch into the aisles. Every time. I have asked why the store is so short-staffed several times, and here are the answer(s) given: - The employees would like to have more hours, but they are not able to get more hours. - Mgmt is "trying to hire more people" (even though the current employees want the hours? tsk tsk), but they "can't" (then it sounds like you need to pay more, that's how labor supply/demand works) - Safeway Corporate is handing down orders to keep store staffing lean. This is a choice to cheap out on the customer experience. It takes less time to drive to a further away grocery store to do my shopping than to deal with the disaster that is an understaffed Safeway. Vote with your feet - Safeway is cheaping out on labor, and the consumer experience is suffering. If you time is worth ANYTHING, skip Safeway. Other reasons to skip this Safeway: - The produce is overpriced compared to lots of other local options (Mi Pueblo, J&L over on Moffett, Lucky). The store is so thinly staffed that I often notice that there is NO lettuce, because it has run out and nobody has had time to re-stock - Parking lot kind of sucks - The meat is low quality for the price compared to Costco - If you need any sort of customer service or need to talk to a manager, it just doesn't happen. you wait a *long* time and then a regular employee is sent to tell you the manager is unavailable. While there's still a lot I don't like about this store (VERY long lines with only a few registers open, super fluorescent lighting that hurts my eyes, etc.), I will say that they recently obtained a bunch of new shopping carts, so that is thankfully no longer an issue. I'm not sure exactly when this happened since I now do most of my shopping elsewhere, but I did notice this when I stopped in last week to grab a few items and thought it important to applaud their efforts. I think it all began when my children were born. They were wake me up at 4 AM or 5 AM in the morning, and they were very few places they go but, I can always count on my good old friend Safeway. Not only does this place have incredibly long lines all the time, they illegally block one of their exit doors at night (during business hours), endangering the safety of their customers and employees. I pointed out to an employee that the door was marked "this door must remain open during business hours" and was rudely told "we lock that door at night." Quite possibly the worst pharmacy I've ever used. The pharmacist routinely screws up my medicine, one time giving me medicine that would have killed me had I taken it. Several times, my doctor has called in a medicine in the morning and the pharmacist decided something was wrong with the prescription and refused to fill it, but didn't call me OR the doctor. Then I get to the pharmacy and find out that my prescription hasn't been filled and it's too late to fix it because my doctor went home for the day. Sometimes she even does this on a Friday so I have to go the entire weekend without my medicine. Crap like this is beyond unacceptable. How could anyone be so incompetent and still have a job? read more

I stood at the counter for quite a bit of time before an Indian woman who's name i believe was Sangenie (?) stopped speaking to another worker in her native tounge and acknowledged me. I don't normally write reviews about grocery stores but this one is a disaster. There is FUZZY rotting strawberries and rotting mangoes in the fruit section. The beef was greying and looking not fresh. I stupidly bought some 80/20 ground beef that looked ok and put it in my refrigerator. Not even 24 hours I opened the package and the beef completely stunk. That's unacceptable. You are risking giving your customers food poisoning and illness. STOP!!! DON'T GO HERE. I just moved to Mountain View from Sunnyvale and this is the closest Safeway. I've been here twice to pick up a handfull of items (less than 5 each time). Both times items I bought had open packages. This is not something that even crosses my mind in the store, so the first time I came home with an open and molded package of Mozzarella cheese. I went back the next day, and they did allow me to exchange the cheese, and acknowledged that it was disgusting. The other day, I was buying some pita chips and spinach dip. I've been to this safeway many times, but mainly out of convenience since it's so close to where I live. As all the other reviews say, the lines here are terrible. There's pretty much never a time when there's enough cashiers. Management really needs to figure this out. Selection is pretty standard for a grocery store. You can find pretty much whatever you need here, which is nice. They also have a pretty good beer selection, which makes the trip here worth it on its own. However, for fresh ingredients, you probably want to go elsewhere since it's pretty hit-and-miss. I've seen (and accidentally bought) molded fruit and graying meat several times. As for prepared foods, the sushi isn't great (the rice is way too mushy and the ingredients always taste frozen), but it's supermarket sushi so I suppose one shouldn't get their hopes up too much. Other prepared foods I've had have been fine, but nothing remarkable. I should mention that I usually bike here and there are always bike racks available, so that makes me happy. read more

Came here with a friend because we were in a hurry and both of the workers at Starbucks didn't even know how to add money to my Starbucks account with cash, LIKE REALLY LOL like none of them. How do you even work at Starbucks and My drink was over $5 and it tasted like water. I didn't bother asking them to fix it because it took like 10 minutes just to get a water flavored "refresher", So disappointed and I've been to multiple Starbucks around the area and this has far been the worst. This seemed like a mini Safeway when I walked in, but I basically came here to buy some sugar free red bull since I didn't find it during my Costco jaunt earlier in the day. I found the last 4 pack on the shelf! I can't speak of their selection at this location since I didn't do any real shopping, but from their soda aisle, it seems like they don't carry a lot of stock. Okay, I don't know why it took me this long to figure out what a ripoff Safeway is. Why do I always end up spending 2x as much here than I do at Trader Joe's or Mi Pueblo when I'm buying food to host a dinner? Example: Haagen Daz ice-cream at Safeway = $4-$5 @ Target = $2-$3 Don't get me started on the veggies and they aren't even organic! Dairy is also really expensive. Butter = $5 Trader Joe's = $2 ??? For someone that cooks A LOT, I kick myself for not really paying as much attention as I should have. I pretty much come here just for eggs and bread. Meats - go to Costco, everything else - Trader Joe's or your local Mexican market. Surprisingly, Target is very well priced.
