The only thing bad I have to say about this place is the man working at the butler counter. I ordered a 3/4 lb of salmon. He gave me a little under 3/4 lb. He asked if that was okay, and I told him maybe a little over would be better. He was able to get me a piece over 3/4 lb. As he was wrapping it up, he stared blankly out and didn't give me any eye contact. He handed over the piece of salmon and I said "thank you." No response from him. As I was walking away, I overheard him talking to his co worker saying, "that girl right there...." who knows what he said about me from that interaction. This Safeway needs to give better training on customer service and teach the man behind the meat counter how to behave himself appropriately. Every encounter counts. I felt like it was a simple request and he can't even do it without being a complete ass about it. I came in 5/10/18 at about 3 pm. Great people working here. Terrible corporate policy cutting back hours has made me stop shopping here after almost 10 years. The lines are ridiculously long, never any baggers so the checkers take even longer or you bag your own (not a big deal, but really? No baggers ever?). Really frustrating experience. read more

This store constantly has problems with self check-out and short handed registers. Often find long lines during after work or Friday night. Due not to a lot of customers but too few registers opened and messed up self checkout. Update as of March 24, 2017. No change. This store is not well run. If a new and better store comes in then Safeway is in trouble. Very poor planning of schedules and customer volume. Update August 26, 2017. This will be the last time. There have been several times where all I wanted was a bottle of wine and was stuck looking at a line 15 people deep. No exaggeration. Walked in today at 6:15pm, same thing. I turned around and walked out. I am really at a loss as to how management has done nothing to make this place easier to shop. C'mon. 15 minute wait to check out? Not this day and age nor any. This store has gone very downhill. Today there were several homeless men at the door begging people for change as they exited, and there was only one register open with about 20 people waiting in line. Completely ridiculous. One of the homeless men walked in and poured some soup from the soup station into a McDonalds cup he had with him. Disgusting! My wife has purchased expired meat there before, and I've pointed out to the butcher expired lunchmeat before. This is in contrast to the other Safeway down the street on Contra Costa next to the mall, which doesn't seem to have any of these problems. read more

I have really mixed feelings about this Safeway. This location clearly serves an important role for a corner of Pleasant Hill which is financially struggling. The lines, though, are always way too long. I can't quite figure out why either. The store itself doesn't seem more crowded than any other Safeway nearby. Anyway, if you shop here, plan on waiting twice as long as you will at any other nearby grocery store. read more

This was my neighborhood Safeway for many years, and it has unfortunately earned a reputation in the area for being less than stellar. Some clientele are a bit raggedy, their produce can be pretty subpar, and I've had a couple of bad experiences here. 1) I went to pick up fresh cilantro from produce, but the labeled cilantro section was filled with italian parsley (which looks very similar, but I'm no dummy). There were no employees to be found in produce so I asked a nice lady in floral if she could call someone to assist. She walked over a to nearby manager-looking type, who literally rolled his eyes before approaching me. I explained the situation, or at least tried to because before I could finish my sentence, he started to walk away and said exasperated "It didn't come in." I was SHOCKED at the rudeness - not only his crappy attitude, but he didn't offer any alternate suggestions (like dried cilantro or the cilantro paste nearby) or advise when it might be delivered. Not to mention somebody indeed tried to pull a fast one by putting a similar looking herb in that section. I sent a complaint to Safeway's corporate office and didn't receive a reply, so I hope the message didn't fall on dear ears. 2) One Friday night I picked up a container of fresh fried chicken from the deli area. We got it home and I took one bite into a breast and revealed raw pink meat. HORROR. We went straight back to the store and got our money back no questions asked. I was advised by the employee to not buy the fried chicken at their store in the future, as this was a common occurence. So now I shop at this store only when necessary. For basics, they do just fine, and the general demeanor of the store does seem improved - hopefully they've trimmed some employee fat. Their parking lot, despite it being in a large popular shopping center, is also very easy to navigate and there are always spots, even during the busy days near holidays or party events. So I will continue to pop in now and again. read more

I don't usually shop here. I was in the area and thought I'd get my shopping out of the way. What a big mistake! They are totally against customer service here. I hadn't even finished asking my question and the lady is already walking away from me and shaking her head "no." I was charged for 20 lbs of ice due to a system error and the solution they came up with is just take a 20 lb bag. Well, I don't need 20 lbs of Ice. Instead of just accommodating me, she starts asking me what the ice is for and giving me her 2 cents about why I should just take the 20 lb bag. I ended up just taking the 10 lb bag for the 20 lb price and walking out. I don't recommend this store based on customer service alone. read more

I never write yelp reviews, but I am hoping this gets back to management and they listen. HIRE MORE CHECK OUT CLERKS!! It doesn't matter what time of day it is, there is always a line. Not just a 3 person line, the kind of line that runs into the aisle. I am sure you pay people minimum wage over there. This is a review on safety only. I was walking towards the very back area of the produce and stepped on a puddle of water, very slippery almost fell! The guy working there asked me if I was ok? It really scared me. He was right there in front chatting it up with a customer instead of mopping the floor right away! - he didn't warn me! He said "oh I was about to clean that up". I was around the corner and I heard this guy actually fall! This was last night, July 13, 2017 around 8:30 pm. My boyfriend and I went to get a sandwich for dinner. We shared a large. The man at the deli cut it in half and wrapped them separately. We went to check out and realize the tag that we need to scan was missing. So we told the lady at the self checkout and she told us we needed to go back to the deli (rudely, might I add). So we went back to the deli and he gave us another tag. Then when we check out at the self checkout again the lady yells at us because we need to pay for two sandwiches. We explain that it's one foot long cut in two. Then she continues to yell at us that we're stealing. My boyfriend asked to talk to a manager and she snaps back that she is the manager. Luckily, after going back and forth, a customer service clerk arrives and told us we were right. It was a $2 difference. But she had to fight for it and lost two customers! read more

Yeah, its a grocery store. The big name supermarkets pretty cookie cutter. I just wanted to say that I was here getting a few things the other day and the bathroom was unbeliveable nasty. It had all the ingrediants for a gross bathroom. The graffiti everywhere, the garbage all over the floor, the toilet was a wreck, the mirror was dirty, the garbage can overflowing. I opened the door and walked away. Seriously, cleaning a bathroom takes 5 minutes. WTF. As a grocery store, its whatever, I would definately say go to Lucky's, its right across the way. Started going here because they have a Wells Fargo inside. Their deli staff are fantastic. Wish the rest of the store employees were as friendly and hard working. But my big pet peeve has to do with the carts. Apparently the carts will stop dead in their tracks if you leave the store without going through the checkout area. So, say you happen to have your baby in the cart and checked out in the deli section, your cart will jerk to a sudden stop and baby will whip forward. There are no warnings anywhere. It just happens. Then a rude employee comes over with an attitude, as if we were supposed to have known. No, sorry. Is your baby OK? Nothing. read more

While I'm a bit nonplussed by some of the choices made for the recent face-lift, I am quite happy with the store in general. The shelves are adequately stocked, there is a good selection of goods and the store is clean. Their recent expansion of cheese and wine is quite welcome, and I hope to see some progress made in the beer selection next (too many domestic names, and not enough imported). I would have given 5 stars without second thought, but the store seems to have issues with scheduling employees to properly man the store during business hours. More than likely you'll here someone paging somebody at least once while you're there, and good luck getting your groceries bagged. Baggers are practically nonexistent here. Not all reviews have to be bad especially when there's a super nice cashier and friendly staff! Visiting here from Orange County and I had a pleasant experience. Lori the head cashier was super sweet when she had a long line she didn't freak out , she kept her cool and kept helping me, oh btw I had bought a bunch of vday tissues that didn't ring up so she had to fix everything. It's your typical grocery store so why 3 stars you ask. I typically go to a different Safeway and this one seems a little smaller inside. A few items I normally get we're not here. Also I circled then had to park pretty far out. It's in a busy shopping center and main reason I came was because I needed to go to chase also. Stopped at this store late this afternoon on my way home from work and was astounded at how crappy this store is. I mean, Pleasant Hill has a Safeway store that, while quite big, is just plain crummy. Now, I realize that is late Sunday afternoon, and the produce section was pretty picked over, but the selection of fresh produce...hell, even steam-in-bag non-frozen produce was virtually nil. And do not get me started on my fellow shoppers. There's a reason I prefer to grocery shop early on weekday mornings...lot less likely to be permanently maimed by erratic and moroninc nincompoops, especially the ones who use those humongous carts where their angelic offspring climb in front to drive, like a car...but, I digress. Im not impressed by this store. I remember we came in on mother's day for flowers for my recently deceased mother in law. Lots of brown wilted bunches. Today we came back for more flowers (1pm on a Sunday), noticed all the outside plants wilted due to lack of water... could barely navigate the floral department as there was stock and inventory and boxes all over the floor. I tripped over a mass pile of orchids on the floor. I grab two Debi Lilly candles that were marked down to 3.99 per the sign. Then we head to the self check-out where I was barked at by a rather crass attendant stating there was "one line", because she failed to see my man and I together, he just stepped aside to see if there were any shorter lines. We were then barked at by this attendant AGAIN because we need to "stay in line" when we were headed to a register to check out as the previous person was done and walking off. we WERE NEXT, wtf is the issue? Because YOU didn't give me the permission to move forward? As adults, pretty sure us ignorant customers can manage ringing ourselves up in self checkout without military direction and orders. I barked back in irritation for her to leave us alone, we didnt doing anything wrong. The attendant looked at me suprised and agressive, as if I was to listen to her and we were her children. She called over another attendant right after on the phone for backup, as if we threatened her by my getting justifyingly irritated. Then my candles ring up incorrect, have to get out of line with the new attendant that was called over and treck back over all the boxes and inventory in floral to show him the sign. Overall I was disappointed in this store.... I will shop elsewhere. Pretty rediculous to have to experience getting upset in a store by a crass, bitchy and salty Safeway worker when we were there to buy flowers to take to the cemetery right after. What happened to the OLD Safeway Service! I used to go to Safeway ONLY because of their exceptional service. They used to drop everything and follow their customers to the item they look for. That no longer exists for sure. They have gone from extraordinary service to horrible service. A while ago, I purchased a gift card for my elderly mother. She went to use it and their machine wouldn't read the card so they FORCED her to use her credit card. My mom called me very scared because they made her feel like she did something wrong! When I asked to speak to the clerk they refused to talk to me. My 80 year old mother was crying in the store and no one careD. That is flat out elder abuse and terrible service. When I escalated the call, the manager said their machine was not working and I inquired why they wouldn't try another machine he simply said they should have! he offered to mail a gift card to my mom and HE NEVER DID. I decided to never shop there until this morning! I had my very ill mother in the car waiting to go to her doctor's appointment; and I went in for a few items for her. while there was NO cashiers open (it was 6:30 am) I was forced to use the self service check out. The machine had an error message so this very indifferent lady comes to "help" and she says you have not scanned any of your fruit. I politely said but I did and it accepted all my items. She said NO YOU DIDNT! and starts scanning all the fruit AGAIN. So I paid and tried to rush out but decided to check the receipt. YES everything was scanned by me already and she doubled them all. I went back to her to check and she said: WELL how come I didn't see it on the screen??" I said I mentioned that I had scanned them. then she said: " I can't credit your card back and need to give you cash". I said do what you need to do because I need to go. Then again I look at the receipt and saw another item that she didn't credit me. She looked and me and said: "CRAP!!!". I would not even dare to use that kind of language at my work place! You in a hurry? Running in for a few items? DO NOT... I repeat... DO NOT pop into this Safeway. I live a block away and will drive a mile away to the other Safeway on Contra Costa to avoid the disaster that is my local Safeway. It's sad. I wish their ownership/management would explain to me why there are always at least two self-checkout stands down, particularly when you are as busy as you are 24/7. They are never fully-staffed with cashiers to handle the traffic and the service is subpar for the prices. When I'm at another Safeway and someone asks "is there anything I can help you find?" - it still shocks me. Oh wow! That's service! Totally lacking at our local hub. Such a prime location - they take advantage of their local customers. I refuse to continue to patronize even though I live within a 7 min walk. I just can't deal. If you have a lot of time and don't care too much about how fresh the meat selection or produce is, shop here. Otherwise, there are better options nearby with much better service. read more

One register open at 7pm on a Saturday night. Ridiculous. Line went from one end of the store to the other. Cashier worked at a slow pace, unconcerned about the growing frustration. He said " all the other cashiers went home" and "its a timing thing, all these people just showed up at the same time", which would include us. I like this store, it has what I need and the staff has always been friendly to me and my kids. I like all the different departments (wine, flowers, and olive bar) except the actual deli. The salads are always pretty weak and not full and always the SAME!!! But for the most part I am happy with the store overall. read more

Hi l just went inside this Safeway for a few items l forgot to get at trader Joe's! The store l will only shop at besides smart and final. For here on out. I'm not not a door mat ok. Here's my story and remember there's two sides to one. I proceeded to check out self service didn't look crowed so l went for it. I swiped two items and here comes BOB! Never met this man in my life but l won't forget how he treated me. He told me to place the items that scanned out of the cart. Ok np here thanks l will do that in the future we both agreed that would be a good ideal. He kept talking about how things work in Safeway l politely told him I'm in a hurry and didn't feel he was being genuinely friendly. I got this! He left for a minute and came back to me the only African American here mind you other customers were waiting for help because you know this system at Safeway self service is not working! But BOB was to busy harassing me he didn't care about anything else but too make sure my day was ruined! He even had the nerve to count my items while l was still in the process of scanning my items l haven't even pressed the finish and pay yet! Really BOB! I had enough! I told he can keep these grocery! I refuse to be harassed by anyone! Treat all customers with respect! Keep your personal views at home! Why do Safeway allow this! Please change this at your store l asked nor a manager Michelle came over and brought back the grocery l left were l was being accused of not scanning all my items by BOB even though l was still standing by my machine working towards completing my scanning of my items. Place is ok. Has the basics what one needs. Because of its location, it can have or not have what another Safeway has which can be the case at times. So it sometimes you have to remember which Safeway has that special item you always want. Getting in/out can be a pain every now and then. read more
