A great bakery with good sandwiches, solid coffee and good, fresh soup. I had their ham and gruyere on paisano bread...the bread was excellent. Good flavor, hard, crunchy crust. They make the sandwiches in a way that very much highlights the quality of their bread; not too much ham, cheese or dijon mustard to overwhelm the bread. The ham and cheese were quite good; the gruyere in particular had a robust, sharp flavor. The vegetable soup (their soups rotate daily) was good and fresh, but a soup that was heavy on cabbage and onion was a bit discordant in the hot summer weather. The coffee was quite good and they sell their beans, which indicates that they take their coffee relatively seriously. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was open, airy and inviting and the smell of freshly baking bread really makes it a nice place to spend some time. read more

This wonderful bakery has become even better over time. I love the industrial-modern setting. You walk in and are greeted by the wonderful smell of artisanal breads and pastries baking and cooling on the racks in the open kitchen. This time around I tried the almond croissant everyone has raved about in other reviews. It really is THAT GOOD. It is crunchy on the outside, meltingly tender on the inside and when you break a piece off, the shards of pastry and almonds go all over your plate to be scooped up with your coffee spoon. Seriously freaking phenomenal pastry - the almond flavor is there, but does not overpower the croissant itself. Magical. You will not find a better one in Paris. My skim latte was excellent, as well. The breads looked gorgeous, and the sample I had at the register was superb. Sage is a bit out of the way (across the street from the Hotel Santa Fe) but well worth the walk to and from the center of town. read more

Don't miss this place! Amazing bread, baked goods, and creative dishes perfect for breakfast or lunch. The staff is super knowledgeable and accommodating. Ate here on a Saturday late morning early afternoon--no wait and still decently stocked. Had the scrambled egg tartine with incredible Serrano ham, the heirloom tomato and pesto salad, pecan raisin bread, and of course, pain au chocolate. Food Walking into the cafe, or even walking up to the cafe, you can smell the scent of baking bread, which is wonderful. I'll probably come back sometime to try a loaf or three of bread. I only refrained because I'm not a carbovore, and just bought myself some good bread a couple of days ago. I ordered the spinach, blue cheese with sage quiche, and it was delicious. The pastry crust was flaky; the spinach was fresh; the blue cheese was flavorful but not overly salty or overpowering. Yum. I also bought an almond croissant, and while it was also delicious, I felt that mine may have been "overcarmelized." There were many outer layers of pastry that were a little bit too browned and crispy. Also, some of the filling either oozed or, or the topping slid off, so there was a significant amount of sugar/almond crust. It was absolutely delicious when I bit into the bulk of the croissant and got the trifecta if you filling, softer inner layers, and crispy exterior. I also love that the croissant was not cloyingly sweet. Prices Since I'm incredibly cheap, prices seem just a little steep to me, but it's quite reasonable considering the freshness of ingredients, labor/skill required, and location. Expect $8-9 for a sandwich, $2-5 for a muffin or pastry. Ambience, etc. This place is charmingly rustic, instead of pretentiously hipster rustic. This could also be because the target clientele is definitely older and/or Santa Fe outdoorsey thing people, if the customers who visited the place are an accurate cross section. It seems like many locals and recurring customers (lunch and bread loaves) came in. It seems like those lucky enough (and/or wealthy enough) to live near the Plaza and tourists staying in the area could walk here. It's nice, for those of us who live elsewhere, that there's a decent-size parking lot. I love how real plates, flatware (in a real hands towel!), glasses and mugs are used! read more

Safe Bakehouse not only has delicious bread and pastries, but you can enjoy freshly made soup and sandwiches. A plus in Santa Fe is any place that has free parking. The appearance of the artisan bread reminds me of Tucson's favorite, Barrio Bread. Seating is limited inside, patio dining in season. Of course take out. I had butternut squash soup with two thick slices of bread and it was creamy and delicious. It would be a great place to order lunch to go, head down to the Santa Fe Plaza, eat, people watch and enjoy. Stop by in the morning and start your day with a pastry and coffee. read more

And the staff is wonderful: friendly, helpful, clearly enjoying their work. My husband felt the same about the chocolate one! Our friend was raving about the avocado toast (using the cheddar jalapeno bread). The coffee was quite well-made and matched the quality of food. Wow, what an amazing find in Santa Fe! We are here for a short trip from Los Angeles and stopped in for a coffee and I love everything about this place. What they stand for. What the staff gives of themselves. The philanthropy that is kneaded into every loaf of bread. Owned by a pilot (whaaat?), inspired by her time in Europe, and run by native Santa Fe families. It's a wonderful place to start your day. Definitely coming back when we return to NM! Apparently there is a bakery in Texas too that is owned by the same woman! I went to Sage for coffee. It was good, but would have been better if they served it in the French style, deep and roasted. It was a pleasant cup of coffee with many refills. I sat in front of the busy bakery part, it was very warm, and Santa Fe was not even 50 degrees in the morning. But the best part was the bread - tender flakey flakey croissants and toasted rustic bread, chewy pecan raisin bread, served in the French style with soft butter and preserves. I generally like their food but the last few times I've ordered the turkey sandwich, it's been really disappointing. One or two slices of turkey, one slice of cheese and a few greens. Half of a small sandwich for $4.70 plus tax. They've cut back on ingredients so it's outrageously expensive for what you get. Sad. I won't order it again. read more
