This place is amazing. A quality bread experience stacked with naturally fermented sourdough loaves. Their croissants are top notch as well. I live and travel often in the Southwest and this is easily the best bakery in the region. Nothing flashy, just quality French technique bread and pastry. The espresso shots are pulled just right as well. The workers and staff are friendly showing that when you love what you do it comes through in the food and atmosphere. 12/30/19 update My wife and I can't help but come here for every breakfast in Santa Fe. Really good bakery. Fresh-made bread, peach jam and pastries; good coffee; great atmosphere and cool outdoor seating. We arrived around 8 a.m. and quickly discovered how popular this place is with the locals -- and for good reason! My family had a house in Santa Fe growing up, and I would've been here all the time had it been around 15 years ago. First off, don't be immediately swayed by the pastries to the detriment of the wonderful full breakfasts. I made that mistake...although my son really loved his "pain au chocolat" (chocolate croissant), which was towering with flaky dough and looked not unlike the Sydney Opera House -- I opted for the smallish banana-nut muffin, not realizing they had a full menu (good, but muffins aren't usually my thing for breakfast). The owner brought out a tasting of their home-made peach jam, and as soon as I tried it I realized that they had oh, so much more than muffins and pastries for breakfast -- so I quickly got a to-go bag for the pastry and ordered some toast with butter and more of that incredible jam! Others around me were ordering eggs and breakfast sandwiches. Sadly, they don't sell the jam, as they are a full-stop bakery and are baking around the clock as it is. Also, I knocked a star off because my toast got served with no butter or jam, kind of just sitting on the plate (then, when I asked, I was given some to-go containers with butter and jam?!)...But I highly recommend stopping in for some wonderful home-made bread, and definitely try the toast with peach jam and a solid, unfussy latte to go with it. read more

Homemade deliciousness! Yes, it is primarily a bakery, but don't let that deter you. We stopped in for breakfast and were not disappointed. Loaves of homemade bread on racks for your viewing/eating/buying pleasure. Plus some yummy looking pastries in the case. Staff was very friendly (and patient as we made our decisions!) The coffee was great, and so was our breakfast. The avocado smash with serrano ham was sooo good as were the scrambled eggs, avocado & serrano hame. The menu is limited - it's first & foremost a bakery, remember? - but everything we had was excellent. We left with full tummies and a loaf of bread! I LOVE Sage--it's the best bakery in Santa Fe, and perhaps the best bakery in the state. Everything we have ordered at Sage, be it loaves or lunches, has been absolutely delicious. You can tell it has been baked with love and the best local ingredients. Lunches are a great alternative (sandwiches, panini etc) for those needing to give their stomach a break from green chiles. Many Whole Foods stock Sage elsewhere in the state--including in ABQ--so good bread is never too far away! read more

I came with colleagues for lunch about a month ago. I lived in Santa Fe for FOUR years and never knew this place existed. In a way, I'm glad I didn't--because I would have never left! If you haven't been to Sage, BE CAREFUL--their almond croissants are like crack. They are freakin' AMAZING and totally addicting. And to think I was getting ready to order a pain au chocolate when one of their staff members recommended it--bless that woman! I've been back at least once a week since. Their chocolate pecan cookies are also crazy good! When in Santa Fe you HAVE TO at least grab a croissant and coffee from this place--just please don't order them all, save at least 6 for me ;-) read more

I first discovered Sage Bakehouse's bread at Whole Foods recently, and the Farm bread in particular, which I just love. I was thrilled to find out they have a cafe here in Santa Fe ( where I just moved a few months back). My mom and aunt are in town visiting and since they too love the Farm bread, we came here for brunch this morning - around noon. It's a cute place but more a cafe than a restaurant with slightly limited seating. You order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. It seems like we came at a good time because we found space with minimal issue at a communal table right by the freshly baked bread stand. There's also a small outdoor patio out front, which is cute. The menu seems small but there's actually quite a few things to choose from. My mom and I ordered the scrambled eggs tartine with avocado and cheese - simple but SO delicious! My aunt ordered the ham + cheese panini, which she loved. The bread is fantastic and lends a delicious flavor. The arugula salad looked yummy - I will order next time. We also ordered some sweets for dessert with coffee later - including the croissant, the almond croissant, and the cinnamon roll. All were delicious. Coffee was strong + good. The service was lovely - everyone who works there is just so nice and came to check in on us during our meal. I love the signage they have detailing that they donate all leftover bread to the Food Depot (~2k lbs per week!) and on top of that, they use non-GMO ingredients. We were very disappointed with this place. We bought a couple of croissants and two loaves of bread. The bread was excellent! They use a sour dough starter for much of their bread so it has that little tang to it. Unfortunately the croissants were disappointing. They were flaky and tender but they were bland; they needed salt. The chocolate croissant had a very thin layer of chocolate - too thin as when we broke it in half, I had no chocolate and hubs had all of it. It appears it is a very popular local bakery, just not for me. read more

Quite easily the best sourdough bread in NM. My lady and I like to get it fresh from the bakery whenever we're in Santa Fe. This is the time of place that makes you smile as soon as you step inside. The freshly baked breads and pastries give off some of the best smells you'll ever find. Aside from these, they also serve up sandwiches, paninis, salads, and delectable tartines. Over my recent trip to Santa Fe, we stopped in here a few different times. Once for lunch where I tried to cold turkey sandwich which was great, and a couple more to get some coffee and pastries to go. Matt B. and I stumbled on Sage Bakehouse when we were looking for a quick spot to pick up sandwiches for take-out. We hadn't done much research on dog-friendly Santa Fe, and we decided we'd just eat in the car or in our hotel and deal with the dog issue later. When we arrived at Sage Bakehouse, right across the street from our hotel, we realized there was a dog-friendly patio. We also realized that the place was not really a sandwich shop, but an excellent, excellent bakery. The place was small and undecorated with an incidental industrial feel, with most of its space dedicated to churning out the baked goods. There were some blackboard menus up, and at the front of the shop, counters with goodies on display, flanking the register. The cashier was friendly enough, and once I paid, I was free to carry our lunch to the patio. Sage Bakehouse offers a small selection of tiny pre-made sandwiches. These sandwiches, we learned, were not the main draw of the place, nor did it seem like they were designed to make a meal. They cost $4 each and were really half sandwiches, the better to mix and match with the pastries. We arrived late in the day by bakery standards, so not all of the sandwiches were even available. I asked for the egg salad sandwich, but when I bit into it I discovered the cashier had given me the tuna salad. No matter. This was a delightful tuna salad sandwich, the moist shredded fish studded with bits of fresh tomato and lettuce, bound but not drenched with mayo. The tuna salad came between two great chewy slices of sourdough bread. The rest of our lunch was made up of big, perfect croissants. I had the almond, and Matt made his meal out of one plain croissant and one pain au chocolate. All three were fantastic. The plain croissant was splendid with butter, with a gorgeous light flake and layer upon layer of pastry dough that shattered against the teeth. The pain au chocolate added an even dose of chocolate, never too much and never too little, and never a bit too sweet. The almond croissant was a little different in that it incorporated a bit of crunch to the outer layer with a combination of slivered almond and a hardened sugary crust. The inside featured a lush almond paste, and the resulting croissant delivered a beautiful variety of flavors and textures. Sage Bakehouse charges something like $4 per croissant, but they are worth every penny. I'm not much of a pastry person, but Matt eats croissants whenever he can. He was quick to declare his pain au chocolate the best he'd had in years, and as we were leaving Sage Bakehouse, he said to me, "This is an easy five stars, right?" I agreed absolutely. read more
