Saica has really amazing bibimbap. Highly recommend.

I used to go here a lot for drinks when I was attending umich. The sushi is pretty reasonably priced. It's probably better to go in the evenings as their dinner menu is a bit more extensive then. Probably the best spicy tuna rolls in Michigan. It's made as a large roll and it's got a right amount of spice. Best sushi in Ann Arbor at great prices. Total sleeper sushi restaurant. Always order the spicy tuna: they use little to no mayo like all the other places and you can see the chili pepper flakes. It's amazing. miso salmon roll has this great sauce they put on top. Also recommend the tuna tataki and eel roll. Saica has great rolls but the sauces they use just make it even better. They also serve beer, wine, sake, and some hot dishes. This is my go to in Ann Arbor any day of the week. read more

I've been eating at Saica for about 10 years...it's been my favorite place to get sushi in Ann Arbor by far.. Tonight I went at about 930p ... Had the smallest spicy tuna roll( more like a rice roll ) I've have ever seen at any sushi restaurant EVER!! I would dare to say vending machine sushi may have looked better!! I wish I knew how to post a pic of it to show fellow Yelpers... The sushi chef should have been embarrassed to serve that "roll" to a customer !! For 6 dollars I got ripped!! Wow... I am shocked by the mixed reviews but here's my two cents. I had a GREAT experience, our dinner consisted of: your standard miso, a special order salad from the chef encompassing a variety of fish + greens & a great ginger dressing, the tiger & devil's kiss rolls, four pieces of nigiri & a 'sashimi pizza'. I thought the latter was a joke (my friend formerly hosted @ Saica) but it worked VERY WELL. I have no complaints @ all about the preparation or freshness of the fish. The rice was excellent & very well balanced. Ambiance plus a more adventurous menu would've earned it a 5th star but this is more of a Pan-Asian restaurant as opposed to Japanese from what I saw. I was there on a Saturday afternoon, and almost didn't go in as it looked a little deserted. So glad that we did. I ordered the Dolsot BiBimBap, one of my favorite dishes (I first tried this when I was in South Korea) and it was excellent. It might be my favorite this side of Korea (with the exception of Black Pine Tree in Southgate). The bowl made the rice crunchy, a good mix of egg, veggies, mushrooms and meat. Very nice. My friend ordered regular bibimbap with tofu and really enjoyed her meal. Also ordered a shitake mushroom sushi, that was very fresh and tasty. This is a place I would visit again and again. Worst sushi restaurant I've been to in Ann Arbor! Every aspect of this was just...ugh. The floors ere dirty, the decor looked like it had been put up in 5 minutes, the walls looked like shower curtains. Our waitress was very friendly, but she didn't seem to know anything about the menu. She also forgot one of our dishes! When we ordered, the sushi list was already written on, and we had to cross out a previous order. They were also out of all tea. The actual sushi wasn't that great either. It was chewy in a very bad way. The rice tasted strange, and the avocado was not ripe - it was very, very hard. The soy sauce had been almost watered down with salt water. The salad's lettuce was soggy and old, and the sauce was almost pure liquid. I will not return, but it's decent if you want a quick meal. However, Nagomi is right across the street, and is much better, if not amazing. read more

Its okay not amazing and the prices were high for tuna rolls and etc. If you do delivery it comes out to like 7 dollar for a $3 roll and extra stuff in your roll that you didn't want or need. The philly rolls are cheaper then other places on campus so my roomie would go there often. Not very popular place but I can see people going north campus and checking it out. read more

Having eaten here 100's of times over the last 5 years, I can honestly say that it doesn't get any better than this (for this price in Ann Arbor). Very consistent quality, large portions, friendly staff. Their salmon is top rate, their roles large, and their sushi pieces big. Saica to me over my past recent visits has become more of an acquired taste, rather than a love at first sight. When I was first introduced with a co-worker, I wasn't overly impressed. Somewhat bland tasting spicy tuna/salmon rolls with which seemed like a lot of pepper oil, which wasn't spicy at all. As time grew on and I became more open minded about it, it has become one of my favorite sushi places in AA. The prices relative to how much sushi you get and the convience being on north campus around where I currently live are the highlights for me. I can't jump up and down about Saica, but I will happily go there and leave with a smile on my face 9 times out of 10. read more

Gosh darn it! The food at Saica is so good. I love their spicy shrimp tempora roll! BUT service is SO slow and spotty that I have quit going to the restaurant. Today a colleague and I decided to go to Saica for lunch around 12:45pm on a Wednesday. We were seated and waited, waited and waited. Finally we just got up and left because we knew it would be a long time before our lunch was over. Bummer. I've eaten here twice, once take out and once dine in. After being treated rudely at Umi Sushi my family and I were relieved to find a nice business. We ordered several sushi rolls and we were met with prompt, precise, and pleasant service. I dined in with my sister, her first trip to a sushi place. Although I can't say I'm in favor of the decor (very modern, pipes exposed in the middle of the dining area, uncomfortable wooden chairs) it was still very clean and neat. I thought their food was DELICIOUS! We split a bento box and a couple sushi rolls. I can't remember what exactly we ordered, but we loved everything. The fish tasted fresh and the miso soup rocked my world! I definitely recommend you give it a chance :) read more

This was my first time going here. I had the Spicy Fish Bowl and it was really great! It was a big bowl with rice at the bottom, topped with a little lettuce, a little seaweed salad, and lots of cubes of assorted raw fish (and I think some roe too). It was like eating a big bowl of sashimi. It was served with a bottle of spicy sauce so you can spice it up if you want. I will go back again sometime and try something new. Can't speak to the waitstaff because my wife and I were the only two in the whole restaurant. Pretty easy to get good service then! Yelp doesn't have the right Sunday hours. Went there on a Saturday night - ordered a simple Zaru soba. I was served a salad with some supremely sour dressing, and to top it off, i had to help myself to cutlery and napkins. After waiting 15 minutes for soba (which should only take less than 10 minutes to cook), i asked politely if she could check on the status of my order. My server went on to throw her hands in the air, give me the most WTF look, and told me to wait. She then goes to another server and starts whispering to her (mind you we were sitting right next to the bar), and she starts gesturing at us and they both started giving us dirty looks. Bizarre behavior to say the least The soba was forgettable - but after the dinner, i went up to clarify with her that i wasn't meaning to hurry her, just to check on the status of the order. She then exclaims that she doesn't run the kitchen, and that she can't make them hurry up with food. Wow, talk about an over-reaction. I told her no worries, and tipped her 15% either ways. Here's the kicker, she then says she felt like i was looking and smiling at her during dinner - that was the most random accusation i had ever heard to say the least. I told her it was because I wanted to get her attention for my food and cutlery since one was late and i didn't get the other. what an excuse for her to try and worm herself out of the situation - Way to go, just basically hurl accusations at your customers and call them creeps to save your a$$. Disappointing food, dismal service. Not worth your time and money. read more

I came into this place just wanting some simple sushi and me and my significant other just had a horrible experience. First off we asked a question and were given false information. Secondly was brought out a dish that didn't look appetizing and had asked if we were able to switch the order. We hadn't even gotten water while being seated for half an hour. We told The waitress we hadn't wanted one of the items and she deliberately put her hands on plate to take off the item we didn't want Whilst eating which was probably the most rude thing any waitress could ever do. We go there for their shabu shabu. Their food is ok but not the best. The beef was fresh and there were a lot of vegetables. If you go for the shabu shabu dinner set for 2, the portion was generous - you get a tempura appetizer, 3 pcs of sushi and a roll, with the shabu shabu. One of my go-to restaurants. In the past there has been variation in portion size, cost, and food quality due to change in ownership, but now I come every 1-2 weeks for a guaranteed good meal for a good price. They have dinner combos (I get the sashimi with Saica udon combo) which come in pretty substantial portions, I always have leftovers. They also offer buy one get one sushi rolls with the purchase of a drink or appetizer on certain days of the week. I go on weekdays for dinner and there is never a wait. read more

Overall, the food and selection here is fairly good. The katsu and various noodles are above average. The galbi and hot pot was above average. I haven't actually tried the sushi yet, but overall the taste and portions are quite fair. The place is really uptight. Japanese are known to be humble and polite but the Japanese staff at this place are obnoxious. The food is the most disappointing part. I ordered almost all their recommended dish of the day. Their freshness were just about average. The sushi rice was super cold, and not moist, and the portion was so tiny. I'm eating this horrible spicy tuna roll as I type. I went for lunch, had to wait 15 minutes just to place my order and was actually out the door when the chef yelled and asked me to stay (the restaurant was 2/3 empty btw and at least 4 groups were seated and had their orders taken while I waited). Against my better judgement I ordered something simple and dfficult to mess up. My order was mixed up with someone elses so they had to re-make it. When I finally got my order I opened to realize that I only got 5 pieces (Totoro gives 6, Sadako gives 8) and paid more for it (paid 5.79 plus tax, Spicy tuna is typically $3-4 at other restaurants). I made it back to work with literally 6 minutes to eat (I work on north campus) because they took too long. The kicker: before checking my food I asked if ginger and wasabi were included and the waitress SNAPPED and said "Everything is in the bag." I am now forcing this sushi down simply because I paid for it and might eat my coworker if I don't. Next time I'll just call ahead to Sadako and venture to Central Campus like normal. The boss of this restaurant is Korean, not even one people can speak Japanese there, I can not believe it's a Japanese restaurant. OMG. I took food there two weeks ago and have got sick for 5 days. I hope some health sector can pay attention to this restaurant, many people took food there and got sick later. Not very serious, maybe. Moreover, the sashimi is not fresh but frozen. And the sashimi cook talks while he is cooking without a gauze mask in the corner. The food tastes Ok, but the tables are always soiled. read more

My husband and I decided Monday night (9-26-2011) to make a late night stop in for dinner because we were riding back from Kroger's on our scooters and we were starving. We ordered the soft shell crab, and gyoza for starters. The soft shell crab was breaded, not too good. The gyoza was steamed and was pretty good. Than for dinner my husband ordered a Ton Katsu. I ordered the Nabeyaki Udon and realized it had egg (I'm allergic) so I sent it back and got the Saica Udon instead. It was delicious, yet it left a strange aftertaste. Well the next day I started having what I call "eggy" burps (when you burp and it tastes like egg). And thought it was strange since I didn't have anything with egg in it. Then I started having really hot, smelly farts (I know but don't laugh) which I thought was strange. Than at about 11pm last night it started..... I was stuck on the toilet with what my husband calls liquid butt fire. It was horrible. Then I took a shower and went to bed (because I have work early tomorrow) thinking it was over. No, unfortunately approximately 10mins ago it happened again.This is the worst case of diarrhea I've ever had! Not only that, now I feel like I'm going to puke on top of all that. This sucks. Really sucks. I feel so sick. I will never go to Saica again. Not only were they unnecessarily expensive but they made me sick to my stomach. I don't think I'll make it to work today. I think I have food poisoning. Be careful. I would avoid this place. On that note, the bathroom is calling again. :( read more

Best Dolsot Bibimbap I've had around the Ann Arbor area, hands down. I loved the crunchy texture of the rice towards the bottom of the bowl (it's quite hot!). I'm also a big fan of the sweet Korean-style Chicken Wings, the glaze was spot on delicious and I really appreciated the fact that they give you a plastic glove to wear when they serve the wings so you don't get the sauces all over your hands. The portion sizes were VERY generous. I had some leftovers to take home after my dine-in meal so that's always nice in my book. read more

I am impressed by: 1) Their quality of food, from both Sushi bar and the kitchen 2) I have sensitive stomach and i never once got upset stomach or anything from food here. 3) Their extensive menu. I have lived in and travelled to other big cities in the USA and outside USA all my life (London, Stockholm, L.A., San Francisco, Toronto, etc) and I always find good food when I travel. Still, i keep making comparison back to Saica when I think about it. Saica's spicy tuna is not over-killed by the spicy sauce they put in. All their hot-pot items (Nabemono) are my favorite in winter (yeah, michigan winter can be horrible. it is a joy to have hot pot entree at Saica). Sea urchin (uni) is so fresh that it is super sweet here (i even reached the point that i had to ask them what kind they served and they showed me the box of "wild-caught". that should say something). Their roll creations beat all other japanese places in ann arbor (i can name all signature rolls from all other japanese places and those still cannot beat the rolls at Saica). So yes, I keep sending my friends to this place. And I will do it on Yelp too (after sitting quietly so long, I have learned that some people do not even know what they talk about.). But if you expect to have typical Americanized Japanese food here, you might be a bit disappointed. Just try their real Japanese food tho. you will forget the fake japanese food you have had elsewhere. read more

Honestly, I will probably never go into this restaurant again. It's an old story, which happened a couple of months ago but still makes me angry. It was a winter holiday, my boyfriend and I entered Saica and ordered a few things for about $30+. After that we saw the coupon posted on the table. Of course we asked the waitress for more details. She said we could use this coupon if our order to be over $50, which sounds really attractive. And we added one more hotpot so that our total price would be over $50. Just for clarification, we asked another waitress about this coupon and she said the same thing as the previous waitress. But when we finished our dinner, it turned out to be about $70+. We asked two more waitresses why was the order still $70+, they both said the coupon could only be used for the next visit (this information was not mentioned on the advertisement or by waitress at all!!). We asked them to communicate with their boss, and then no response at all for about half an hour! No one came to serve our table or responded to our problem here. Finally, we asked one waitress how to solve this problem, they still insisted on not applying the coupon on our visit this time. They even didn't say SORRY! ! I can't be more disappointed about this dinner, which is also surely the worst dinner experience for me in U.S. read more

Don't ask a customer "how is everything?" if you're unwilling to do anything about it when the answer is not as expected. "This dish is awful" was our answer. Instead of finding a solution, the waitresses (total of 3 of them who came by to ask) all gave us different excuses of why they can't fix the problem and essentially placed the blame on us. The last waitress having the worst response of all, telling us that if we haven't touched the dish yet (mind you, we practically didn't except for the first bite), then they would be willing to take it back (Now how would that work? How were we to know that the dish is awful if we haven't tasted it yet? Hmmmm) They had plenty of opportunities to make the situation right and opted not to, so the rating is intended for their customer service. In fairness, other than the dish referenced (Yakisoba) the food is generally ok, average at best, nothing to write home about. read more

Fantastic service, great food (esp rock cooler bibimbap), good prices. One of my go-to places around North Campus.

It's very consistent, fresh fish and Korean menu has a nice variety. Service is not the greatest, they're friendly, but understaffed and they don't return to the table to fill water glasses or take additional menu requests. In a bigger city I'd probably give it 3 stars but pickings are slim in A2. read more
