    Saigon Special
    Allen L.

I went on a Bahn Mi food crawl consisting of seven different shops. Saigon Bakery and Sandwiches was my first stop. Great friendly and efficient staff. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Even 45 mins before closing, there were still many customers coming in to buy sandwiches and other goods.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] All patrons except me appeared to be Vietnamese which is a good indication that this is a beloved and reliable local shop. I got the Saigon Special. The sandwich was loaded and had a good amount of pate. The bread which is baked in house was crisp, yet still soft on the inside. This spot would be my top pick for a locally owned traditional style Dac Biet Bahn Mi which is representative of what you would get in Vietnam.

This is one of my to go spots for Bánh Mì. Ambiance: Just a small little place to get Bánh Mì and other snack items, drinks, Vietnamese coffee, and yummy desserts. Service: Ordering was easy. Sometimes you have to be careful with people who likes to cut in line. Staffs were welcoming and friendly. Food came out quickly. Food: I normally get their Bánh Mì Đặc Biệt, which is pretty good. This time around I saw they have their special item, which is the Bánh Mì Crispy Pork, so I got that. The pork was crispy for sure. However, it was a little lack in flavor. But it was still alright. Next time, I will stick with their Bánh Mì Đặc Biệt. Definitely be back whenever I'm craving for Bánh Mì.

Called in early for a pick up order and they were super accommodating and fast. Menu I went off of was dated and they kindly fixed my order when I asked them to. 3 stars because it was a solid banh mi. Not the best in SGV, but love that they're open at 5am.

    milk coffees.

Very disappointing experience. I ordered two bánh mì sandwiches and two milk coffees. I specifically requested less milk in the coffees, but I was charged extra for that. Paying more for receiving less makes no sense, and no explanation was provided. Another issue is that many of the items they sell don't have price tags. Customers should know the prices before making a purchase, not after. The food was average, but the pricing and lack of transparency left a bad impression. I hope the business improves its pricing practices and clearly displays prices for all items.

Saigon Bakery and Sandwiches is a no frills, cash only spot serving up some solid banh mis and more. This spot is located in a plaza with a solid amount of parking spots. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is no seating here, so definitely more of a grab and go spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Wifey and I stopped by for lunch and got their Saigon Special Banh Mi. The flavors were solid and every bite was as delicious as the last. Saigon Bakery and Sandwiches is Viet gang approved!

There's limited parking to get here, otherwise you'll have to park at the plaza and walk from there. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's no seating except for those waiting for their orders.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's mostly a grab and go place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Even with the small parking, the cars come and go due to everyone stopping by quickly. The staff are great and the food arrived pretty quick. The waiting area is fairly small but you shouldn't wait that long. I got the pork and also the chicken bánh mì plus an egg roll. Both were delicious and the baguette was crispy. The egg roll was good, warm and crunchy. I'd return for more of the menu.

I just moved to California, and this is hands down my favorite bánh mì so far . Whatever the star rating is for this spot -- it deserves it. I wish I had photos, but I literally ate two bánh mìs before I even thought about taking a picture . I took one bite in my car and ended up sitting there for a full 30 minutes just finishing both because they were THAT good. The baguette deserves its own moment: perfectly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and it genuinely reminds me of the bánh mì bread back in Vietnam . Everything tasted fresh, effortless, and done right. If you don't try this place for yourself, you're seriously missing out. Oh and it didn't take long for it to come out. It's definitely a grab and go place.

This is our go to spot for bahn mi and other Viet dishes. The bread is fresh and soft with the perfect crispy crust, the meat is always flavorful and cooked well, and the duck egg mayonnaise makes your mouth water. Portion sizes are generous and they're happy to customize anything you ask. Prices haven't increased like other places, very reasonable.

Amazing banh mi here for a reasonable price. The pate was super flavorful and buttery, and really made the sandwich. The bread was fresh and crusty. Plus, they're open super early which makes it convenient if grabbing lunch for the day. Would definitely recommend this hidden gem!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a very busy store with tons of foot traffic![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I went to Saigon Bakery because I needed something to take to an Easter party. Saigon to the rescue! I placed a relatively large order for vegetarian egg rolls and while it took about 20 minutes I was pleased to see the egg rolls were being made fresh. Prices per each egg roll were not cheap but they were on the larger size. The filling was ample and my friends were all very happy to have egg rolls as finger food. To me the taste was spot on but they were not fried as crispy as I'd like it. They were also a bit greasy but that was somewhat expected. Overall the egg rolls went quickly and everyone seemed to enjoy them. Would I return? Probably yes but I'd definitely try to place the order in advance to see if it makes a difference. The best part, they have their own parking lot. It can fill up quickly but it empties quickly because everyone is taking food to go. I'll probably also return to try some of the other items like fresh spring rolls, banh mi, and Che. LOCATION: 4/5 FOOD: 3/5 SERVICE: 3/5 VALUE: 3/5 AMBIANCE: 3/5 CLEANLINESS: 3/5 PARKING: 5/5

The quality, texture, and the taste of the baguettes here are amazing. Both their round and long baguettes are exceptional, with a perfectly crispy exterior that is not too hard and with a soft pillowy inside. The round baguette is good if you want that bite into the delicious softness of the inside of the bread to last a little longer. I think there are several other places in LA/OC that have better tasting meats in their banh mi than this place but I think when it just comes the baguette, this place has probably the best baguette in LA/OC. On a side note, their Vietnamese coffee here is excellent too.

First time trying Banh Mi here and I was pleasantly surprised by the huge portion size. I also love their bread's crunchy outside that's also soft on the inside. I hate when bread is too hard and cuts the top of my mouth, so this bread was perfect. I ordered the Saigon special #15 for $7.50. The amount of pickled veggies and cilantro were perfect and they definitely don't skimp on the jalapeños so be prepared for some spice. My one con would be that I was slightly disappointed in the amount of filling compared to bread ratio, but still overall delicious. We got our order a few minutes after ordering. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Definitely a grab and go spot as it is a small shop and service is very quick.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There is a parking lot on the side for easy parking. I would return next time I'm craving banh mi!

The bread is ok but the meat quality is not good at all. The cold cut meat is like plastic, I try to bit it off but I can't. Meat has no flavour.

Ask the Community - Saigon Bakery and Sandwiches

    Do they accept mobile pay?

I don't think so. They take credit cards now but I don't think that machine has Apple pay.

    Have they re-opened yet?

    Yes

Are they still open? I called a few times but nobody picked up the phone.

just went right now. they're open again

I got the Saigon special...there was only 2 thin slices of meat, is that what it's supposed to have?

Do they still make the spring rolls?

    Yes.

Is it as good as Bahn mi che cali? Also what kind of tofu do they use for their veggie bahn is it the standard white or the brown marinated slivers with a hint of sweetness?

    Yes it's better

Does this store sell day old bread by the bag?

Not that I recall but they sell a lot of bread each day. Fresh bread is like $1 per long baggette.

Obviously you can order in English, but be prepared as it is not a super streamlined experience catering to non-Vietnamese guests. Immerse yourself and prepare for great food. Their eggrolls are made of rice paper which makes for a lighter and airy-er crisp. They are my absolute favorite. I enjoy them in the bun thit nuong cha gio. I absolutely NEED to eat this every time I visit the area. The portions here are enormous so feel free to share. Other stand out items are the banh beo and the com tam/broken rice dish with everything on it. The com tam is to order, so you can feel free to pick out whatever individual elements you like and just order it as com tam with item1 item2 item3 so on. The best imo are the suon nuong/grilled pork chop, bi or shredded pork, and the cha or crispy meatloaf. Each com tam dish comes with of course a mountain of broken rice, pickled veggies, fatty green onions, and a fish sauce based dipping sauce. They also have pandan waffles at the counter which I love. They are not quite as chewy and bouncy as other places, but that's my preference as I like a more traditional waffle texture. Plenty of coconut shavings and coconut flavor.

The broth is perfectly seasoned and really ties the whole bowl together. I always ask to skip the blood cubes and opt for extra pig's feet instead, which they handle perfectly. That's right, 5 minutes. Although I did go around 9:50AM so there wasn't a line nor another party in the dining area. Food: I woke up craving Vietnamese and this place didn't disappoint. The Bon Rieu had the depth of flavor that I crave. Honestly, I judge most Vietnamese pho restaurants by their Bon Rieu because some places simply use seafood powder in their stock to fake it. What results is a very thinly flavored broth that has very little umami. Bon Rieu should have THE MOST umami of any soup dish because of its tomato and crab base. That's how you can tell if a place is cutting corners. The Nem Cuom is huge and the dipping sauce is generous. The House Special Tea is reminiscent of a passion fruit green tea from a boba place. Sweetened just enough to not be saccharine. Ambiance: Quite small. I believe one of their main issues may be parking during peak hours as it shares a tiny parking lot with many other businesses. HOWEVER, neighborhood parking is plentiful and just around the corner past the Sheridan Hotel and Starbucks. Round the corner and you'll find plenty of parking throughout the day.

New Location, Same Curiosity!…read more Decided to give this newer location a try since our first visit to Golden Delight was years ago. I wanted to try their rice noodle soup with a mix of egg noodles and rice noodles, and let me just say... the picture speaks a thousand words. What arrived looked quite different from what was advertised on the menu. Although most of the ingredients were there, it definitely wasn't as pretty or as generously presented as the photos. Rice Noodle Soup (Egg Noodles + Rice Noodles Mixed) Rating: 6.8/10 The soup itself actually wasn't bad! The broth was light, clean, and nicely seasoned without being too heavy. While I enjoyed trying something different, it isn't a dish I'd order again on my next visit. Now let me warn you about their sauté sauce... It is PACKED with flavor but also seriously spicy! I made the mistake of adding a little too much to my noodle soup, and let's just say my taste buds definitely woke up. A little goes a long way, so add it slowly! The restaurant itself is very modern, clean, and has a trendy fusion vibe that makes for a nice dining experience. As much as I appreciate the updated atmosphere, I always find myself gravitating back toward the more traditional, authentic-style Vietnamese restaurants when I'm craving comfort food. Service Unfortunately, the service on our Sunday visit was probably the biggest downside. Our waitress wasn't very friendly and didn't seem interested in explaining the menu when we had a few questions. Instead, she came across as if she was in a rush the entire time, and her overall attitude felt a bit off-putting. It honestly made us feel like we were inconveniencing her just by asking questions. Great service can really elevate a meal, and unfortunately, this experience did the opposite. Between that and the food, it's another reason I probably wouldn't go out of my way to return to this location. Overall, it was a nice spot to try once, but next time I'll probably explore a different dish--and maybe a different location. Happy eats!
